Life is not easy for any of us. But what of it? We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in
ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing… must be attained.
From the Director... Despite the challenges of the economy and the budget reductions, this has been
a tremendous year for Waves. When I review the highlights of the 09-10 year,
I am amazed at how Waves is constantly living our vision that “all consumers
we serve enjoy an enhanced quality of life, have a sense of personal value, and
are successfully included in community activities”. It is so encouraging to see
the number of individuals, groups and businesses that partner with us to make
life so much more meaningful for all. And, I am also filled with pride in that
the people who receive services through Waves are so generous in their efforts
to help others.
This report highlights our efforts to build community partnerships. From
house parties, Day of Caring volunteer projects, church groups, fund raising
steering members, training programs, we are all giving and receiving our
energy and talents. Our Annual Art Show is our most public opportunity to
showcase the talents of some middle Tennessee area artists who have
disabilities and the synergy that comes from these partnerships.
Waves also promotes activities and programs that focus on health and
wellness. Having an energetic recreation therapist on staff makes this all fun.
During the past year, she has instituted a walking club, swimming at the
Williamson County Recreation Center, and coordinated group participation at
art and cultural events in the Middle Tennessee area. Individuals also
participated in dance classes and Special Olympics. A contract Music
Therapist designed music activities that addressed behavioral, physical and
social objectives. Our day and residential support staff facilitated daily
activities that encourage personal skill development and maintenance. Our
Early Learning program offered families guidance on individualized strategies
to promote their child‟s development. Our Human Resource department
facilitated health screenings for staff through Williamson Medical Center, flu
shots, and smoking cessation classes. We are proud of the valuable programs
Waves provided this past year and will continue to provide in years to come.
We appreciate your continued support and encouragement of the mission of
Waves. This year has shown us that when we reach out there are hands ready
to hold us and share the journey. We hope you will continue to enlist others in
our circle.

Waves, Inc. relies on volunteers. We continually work to increase our volunteer recruitment efforts and to
widen the areas where volunteers can be productive. This past year we have had enthusiastic response to our
requests from groups who have worked with us over the years and from individuals, companies and
organizations who have just discovered Waves, Inc. Volunteers provide much of the labor that allows us to
ready our homes for the change in seasons and to make home improvements that keep our residences and work
sites painted and in good shape.
United Way of Williamson Co. continues to provide diverse opportunities for volunteers at partner agencies.
The annual Day of Caring partners area corporations with Waves. This group typically helps us get our homes
ready for the winter. 2009-2010 brought the AT&T Pioneers, Atmos Energy, Enterprise, Sprint and
Genworth to our facilities. The Youth Advisory Council of United Way held a Christmas party for one of
our residences and established an on-going relationship where the students return periodically to visit with the
ladies in the home. Through United Way‟s website, volunteers have found us and spent time in our Music and
Recreation Therapy programs.
The Patricia Hart Society organizes a food drive that provides Thanksgiving baskets to Waves homes. We
also receive an enormous number of volunteer hours from area churches. Members of Historic Franklin
Presbyterian Church, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Brentwood Baptist
Church, Church of the Latter Day Saints, Franklin First United Methodist Church and Stevens Street
Baptist Church (Cookeville, TN.) have taken part in activities ranging from doing yard work, sponsoring
bingo parties, sharing produce from a community garden, providing an Angel Tree over the holidays to
providing space for our programs and in-services. We have had several National Youth (Middle School to
College age) programs donate time, energy and supplies to projects: Catholic Heart Association,
Youthworks and Push America all took on projects as well as spending time at our Centers.
