ECONOMICS [030]
Rationale
Economics is one of the social sciences, which has great influence on every
human being. As economic life and the economy go through changes, the need
to ground education in children’s own experience becomes essential. While
doing so, it is imperative to provide them opportunities to acquire analytical
skills to observe and understand the economic realities.
The economics courses are introduced in such a way that in the initial stage,
the learners are introduced to the economic realities that the nation is facing
today along with some basic statistical tools to understand these broader
economic realities. In the later stage, the learners are introduced to economics
as a theory of abstraction.
The economics courses also contain many projects and activities. These will
provide opportunities for the learners to explore various economic issues both
from their day-to-day life and also from issues, which are broader and invisible
in nature. The academic skills that they learn in these courses would help to
develop the projects and activities. The syllabus is also expected to provide
opportunities to use information and communication technologies to facilitate
their learning process.
OBJECTIVES
1. Understanding of some basic economic concepts and development of
economic reasoning which the learners can apply in their day-to-day
life as citizens, workers and consumers.
2. Realisation of learners’ role in nation building and sensitivity to the
economic issues that the nation is facing today.
3. Equipment with basic tools of economics and statistics to analyse
economic issues. This is pertinent for even those who may not pursue
this course beyond senior secondary stage.
4. Development of understanding that there can be more than one views
on any economic issue and necessary skills to argue logically with
reasoning.

POLITICAL SCIENCE [028]
Rationale At the senior secondary level students who opt Political Science are given an
opportunity to get introduced to the diverse concerns of a Political Scientist. At
this level there is a need to enable students to engage with political processes
that surround them and provide them with an understanding of the
historical context that has shaped the present. The different courses introduce
the students to the various streams of the discipline of political science:
political theory, Indian politics and international politics. Concerns of the other
two streams — comparative politics and public administration — are
accommodated at different places in these courses. In introducing these
streams, special care has been taken not to burden the students with the
current jargon of the discipline. The basic idea here is to lay the foundations for
a serious engagement with the discipline at the under graduation stage.
Objectives: INDIAN CONSTITUTION AT WORK

in which the Constitution was drafted.
Provide opportunity for students to be familiar with the diverse
visions that guided the makers of the Indian Constitution.
Enable students to identify the certain key features of the Constitution
and compare these to other constitutions in the world.
Analyse the ways in which the provisions of the Constitution have
worked in real political life.

Develop the skills for logical reasoning and abstraction
Inculcate attention to and respect for viewpoints other than one’s own
Introduce students to the different political thinkers in relation to a
concept and in everyday social life
Enable students to meaningfully participate in a concern of current
political life that surrounds them
Encourage the students to analyse any unexamined prejudices that
one may have inherited.
CONTEMPORARY WORLD POLITICS
Enable the students to expand their horizons beyond India and make
sense of the political map of contemporary world.
Familiarise the students with some of the key political events and
processes in the post-cold war era.
Equip students to be conscious of the way in which global events and
processes shape our everyday lives.
Strengthen their capacity for political analysis by thinking of
contemporary developments in a historical perspective.
POLITICS IN INDIA AFTER INDEPENDENCE
Enable students to be familiar with some of the key political events
and figures in the post-independence period.
Develop skills of political analysis through events and processes of
recent history.
Develop their capacity to link macro processes with micro situations
and their own life.
Encourage the students to take a historical perspective of making

GEOGRAPHY [029]
Rationale Geography is introduced as an elective subject at the senior secondary stage.
After ten years of general education, students branch out at the beginning of
this stage and are exposed to the rigours of the discipline for the first time.
Being an entry point for the higher education, students choose geography for
pursuing their academic interest and, therefore, need a broader and deeper
understanding of the subject. For others, geographical knowledge is useful in
daily lives because it is a valuable medium for the education of young people.
Its contribution lies in the content, cognitive processes, skills and values that
geography promotes and thus helps the students explore, understand and
evaluate the environmental and social dimensions of the world in a better
manner.
Since geography explores the relationship between people and their
environment, it includes studies of physical and human environments and
their interactions at different scales-local, state/region, nation and the world.
The fundamental principles responsible for the varieties in the distributional
pattern of physical and human features and phenomena over the earth’s
surface need to be understood properly. Application of these principles would
be taken up through selected case studies from the world and India. Thus, the
physical and human environment of India and study of some issues from a
geographical point of view will be covered in greater detail. Students will be
exposed to different methods used in geographical investigations.

VISHVAKARMA (General Awareness Test)
The various forms of objective questions:
3 0 | P a g e S C H O L A R S 2 ( C O M M E R C E ) S Y L L A B U S : 2 0 1 6 - 1 7
The questions in the papers will be of different types. The recent trend is to
incorporate several complex formats based on graphs, maps, charts, diagrams
or tables to test the candidate's knowledge of a subject in depth. The candidate
is required to understand clearly what is wanted before choosing the answer.
Some such types of questions are given below as examples:
TYPE I : Multiple selection or Multiple completion format. Example 1 : Viruses may be classified under : I. Protozoa II. Actinomycets III. Cyanobacteria. (a) I (b) II or III (c) I or II (d) None Ans. (d) Example 2: The chemical digestion of food takes place in which of the following combinations? (a) Mouth & gullet (b) Mouth, stomach & small intestine (c) Small and large intestine (d) Mouth & large intestine Ans.(b) TYPE II. Chronological /Sequential Format Example 1: Which response gives the correct chronological order of the dynasties of the Delhi sultanat? I.Khalji IILodi III.Sayyid IV.Tughlaq (a)I, II, III, IV (b)I,IV,III,.II (c)I,III,IV, II (d) IV, I, II, III Ans. (b) TYPE III Matching format Example 1 : Choose the response in each case which correctly matches the items in both columns:
a.Brahmo Samaj 1.Discarded worship of images b.Arya Samaj 2.Disregarded authority of later scriptures c.Ramkrishna Mission 3.Deep faith in inherent truth of all religions d.Theosophical society 4.Glorification of Hindu past (a)A-1,B-2,C-3,D-4 (b)A-2,B-1,C-3,D-4 (c)A-1,B-2,C-4,D-3 (d)A-2,B-3,C-4,D-1 The candidate is here expected to respond simultaneously to four different items and choose the response without being confused. Extra care must be taken while solving these questions, as most of the options may seem nearly correct. TYPE IV Assertion - Reason Format An increasingly popular format with the examiner is the Assertion - Reason questions. This type consists of two statements - one an assertion (A) followed by another called a Reason (R). Based on a code given, the candidate has to decide whether the assertion and reason are individually correct or not; if both are correct, whether the reason correctly explains assertion or not. Example 1: Assertion (A) : Indian economy is referred to as a 'mixed economy'. Reason (R) : Indian government recognizes the relative importance of both public as well as private sectors in the process of economic development. MARK (a)If both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A (b)If both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A (c)If A is true but R is false. (d)If A is false but R is true Ans.(a) Here it is not enough for the candidate to know whether a statement is by itself correct or not. He must know the consequences and causes.
TYPE V Figures / Tables format
