John 15:13-15“Greater love has noone than this, that helay down his life for hisfriends. You are myfriends if you do whatI command. I nolonger call you ser-vants, because a ser-vant does not know hismaster's business.Instead, I have calledyou friends, for every-

thing that I learned from my Father Ihave made known to you.”

It has been said that we all need friends, but few understand the basics about formingquality friendships. For me a true friend issomeone whom I enjoy mutual affection, interests and respect for. The best friends arethose who are helpers in times of trouble. Those who are our advocates when we findourselves in need are the kind of friends thatare worth their weight in gold. Solomon oncewrote, "A brother is born for times of adver-

sity, but there is a friend who sticks closerthan a brother - that is God our closest com-panion."

By friendship I mean the greatest love, thegreatest usefulness, the most open commu-nication, the noblest sufferings, the severesttruth, the heartiest counsel, and the greatestunion of minds of which brave men andwomen are capable.

Friendships are enhanced when weshared mutual goals, values and power.Jesus knew that the best kinds of friendshipswould come from an intimate relationshipwith Him. Nothing comes close to the satis-faction you get when we are in close commu-nication with the Lord Jesus.

One of my favorite hymns is "There’s nota friend like the lowly Jesus. No not one. Nonot one. None else can heal all our souls’ dis-eases. No not one. No not one. Jesus knowsall about our struggles. He will guide till theday is done. There’s not a friend like thelowly Jesus. No not one. No not one." LetJesus be your closest friend by spending the

first part and the most valuable parts of yourday with him in praise, communion and sub-mission to His directives.

Friendship is enhanced when we sharemutual activities that contribute to the quali-tative and quantitative expansion of the king-dom of God. This might be best illustrated bya triangle. When two people want to get clos-er to one another they must first draw closerto the Jesus at the apex of the triangle. Asthey draw closer to the Lord in obedience, love and trust, they will find themselvesdrawing closer to one another. Too manypeople falsely assume that they can formfriendships without making Christ the centerof all relationships. Without Jesus at the cen-ter of every friendship it will eventually fail orcause us to put people above our devotion toGod. Amen!

Friendship is a way that you can showour love for one another as we are com-manded to do. True friendship evidences thequalities of patience, kindness, gentlenessand faithfulness without seeking its owninterests. Love makes friendships grow byadding enrichment to every relationship.Love is not anxious to impress nor does itcherish inflated ideas of its own importance. It knows no limit to endurance because itbears all things, believes the best in every

person, hopes for the best in every difficultsituation and endures all kinds of disappoint-ments. Without an agape love, friendshipsare mercurial, fleeting and fair weathered innature.

Friendship provides the relationships thatbring about 90% of the people into the fam-ily of God. Consistently, statistics tell us thatabout 90% of the people who becomeChristians do so through a friend or a familymember. Friendship evangelism provides awarm relationship where people are able tofeel the affection of a loving Christian beforethey are presented with the hard truths ofthe gospel.

Few people seem to be willing to extendfriendships to people before they lay thetruths of the gospel on the people aroundthem. May the Lord help us to be kind to all, friendly, and willing to serve those around usby extending a helping hand. The Lordbefriended many as a way of demonstratingthe love that gives even when others misun-derstand, ignore or criticize the giver.

Friendships are so valuable becausethrough them we receive encouragement, consolation of love, fellowship and affirma-tion. Consider the great contribution that thefriendship of Jonathan and David provided

By: Lola SearcyIn Tuesday Night’s mid – term elections,

Dallas County voters senta strong message thatthey will “defend change”.For most of the evening, itappeared that all of theDemocrat incumbentswere trailing theirRepublican challengers.Early voting results hadthe majority of the incum-bents neck and neck; butas the polls came to aclose and the reports fromthe precincts came in, allDemocrat incumbents onthe County level were successful in theirbids for re-election to their respectiveoffices. The race for Dallas County DistrictAttorney, a hotly contested race, that sawincumbent District Attorney Craig Watkinsand his Republican opponent, DannyClancy, trade insults and accusationsalmost entirely throughout the electionprocess. This race went down to the wire, with DA Watkins trailing Clancy most of theevening. Around midnight, with 90% of

the precincts reporting, Watkins had forgedahead, being elected to his second term as

Dallas County District Attorney. IncumbentEddie Bernice Johnson was expected toface a tough battle against her Republicanchallenger, Stephen Broden due to a scan-dal resulting from scholarship funding.Congresswoman Johnson was never injeopardy of loosing her congressional seat, she defeated Stephen Broden by a hugemargin to win re-election to House District30, signifying the continued confidence thevoters in House District 30 still have in her

ability to get things done. Former DallasMayor Pro-tem Dr. Elba Garcia, defeated

incumbent KennethMayfield for the CountyCommissioner Precinct4 position, whileAttorney Clay Jenkins, defeated Wade Emmertfor the position ofCounty Judge. GovernorRick Perry won anunprecedented thirdterm by defeating for-mer Houston Mayor BillWhite by a margin of55% to 42%; makinghim the longest serving

Governor in the country. On the Countylevel Democrats regained control of DallasCounty, while Republicans retained controlof the Texas House. The major upset onthe National level came when longtimeWaco Congressman, Chet Edwards wassolidly defeated by Bill Flores a retiredBryan energy executive.

This year’s mid-term elections provedthat the message of “change” still res-onates with the voters of Dallas County.

Exodus 31:1-3There are people in

our society who areoverlooked and havebeen overlooked foryears. Their talents andgifts go unnoticed toothers who can only seethe favorite ones. Thelaid back servants, thequiet ones, and themeek are usually over-looked when it comes to

choosing upsides. These people we willnever see unless God pulls our coat.

You see after a while we become anElijah. Thinking there is none left exceptus, but God to Elijah no, no you are notthe only one left, because I have 7000more that you do not know about. Yousee, people that we have written off thelist, God has a place for them. There arepeople right under our noses who havemany gifts and talents, but because oftheir laid back attitude we do not askthen to do anything. We do not tap all ofour resources in our churches. We passby, and pass up people because we donot think they are in the mainstream ofthings, which goes on around us. Bezalel(Bez-a-lel) was a laid back person. Moseshad forgotten about this man, God hadto speak to Moses about Bezalel. “TheLord spoke to Moses saying, “see I havecalled by name Bezalel, the son of Uri,the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, andI have filled with the Spirit of God in wis-dom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship.”Exodus 31:1-3. Mind you that this is thefirst mention in the Bible of someone

being filled with the Spirit of God.It is significant that Bezalel was nei-

ther a preacher, prophet, nor teacher. Hewas a craftsman, called of God to over-see the construction of the tabernacle.God had a plan and He endued this lay-man with power to fulfill it. “The Spirit ofGod has many names, and the Spirit ofthe Lord will rest on Him, the Spirit ofWisdom and understanding, the Spirit ofKnowledge and the fear of the Lord”(Isiah 11:2) There are people in our localchurches that are overlooked that havetremendous gifts, but are looked overbecause they are not so popular. Weneed to tap the resources in our church-es, because we are surrounded with verytalented and gifted Brothers and Sisterswho can do a much better job than wecould ever do. Now! On the other side ofthe coin we should discover our Spiritual

gifts and develop and use them in min-istry. Bezalel is a model of a Spirit-filledman on the job. When we receive Jesusas Lord, His Spirit takes residence in us,when He comes in He gives of gifts forservice. ”As each one received a special(spiritual) gift, employ it serving oneanother, as good stewards of the mani-fold grace of God.” (I Peter 4:10)

When God gives us a gift, we shouldwant to make that gift known that Godmight be glorified. When God gives us agift we do not use it; we fail to show oth-ers what God has done for us, whichsmothers the glorification of the almightyGod. If we really want to make Godsmile, just use the gifts that He gives, don’t wait until we are discovered.

Let us nor forget to read our Bibles.May God bless you REAL GOOD, andmay He ever keep you in His loving care.

Prayer ClosetPASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON

ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

One day Jesus waspraying in a certainplace. When he fin-ished, one of his disci-ples said to him, "Lordteach us to pray just asJohn taught his disci-ples". This eager tolearn the how of prayeris found in the 11thchapter of Luke. Thebest way to learn howto pray effectively is tostudy the guide book

God has given us. One reason webecome fruitless in our prayer life is thatwe fail to study what the Bible has to sayabout prayer. In the Bible we find themodel prayer which is the greatest guideto effective prayer that God has given toman. The model prayer, better known asthe "Lord's Prayer", is found in the 11thchapter of Luke and the 6th chapter ofMatthew.

King Nebuchadnezzar had made a largestatue of gold and commanded that every-one must worship the statue whenever they

heard the royalmusic - they mustworship the statue,or face terrible con-s e q u e n c e s !"Whoever does notfall down and wor-ship will immediatelybe thrown into ablazing furnace"(Daniel 3:6).

Daniel's friends,Shadrach, Meshach,and Abednego, were

determined to live with an uncompromisingfaith. They believed God's Word and obeyedHis commands: "You shall have no othergods before Me...You shall not bow down tothem or worship them" (Exodus 20:3, 5).These three young Jewish men took a standand refused to worship the golden statue.Their devotion to God was greater than theirfear of the fire.

Nebuchadnezzar was furious and followedthrough on his threat: He ordered the fur-nace heated seven times hotter than usualand commanded some of the strongest sol-diers in his army to tie up Shadrach,Meshach and Abednego and throw them intothe blazing furnace. But whenNebuchadnezzar looked inside the furnace,he was amazed by what he saw.

"Look! I see four men walking around inthe fire, unbound and unharmed, and thefourth looks like a son of the gods."

As they were facing the fire, Shadrach,Meshach, and Abednego saw no chance ofescape, but they placed their complete trustin God - a trust which would not falter evenif they were burned. But rather than beingburned by the fire, these three men werefreed from their binding ropes and walkedwith "a son of the gods." In their time ofgreatest need, God comforted these youngmen and set them free.

The fires in our life WILL come. The heatwill seem intense! But we must not fear, orabandon what we know to be true. Our faithis ALWAYS refined and made stronger byfire; "the testing of your faith develops per-severance" (James 1:3). Fire will alwaysteach us to trust more deeply and worshipmore sincerely. When we really believe thistruth, it will become possible to actuallyrejoice in the face of fire. We can rejoicebecause we KNOW He is in complete andabsolute control of every area of our life -this is true freedom! Let's walk with a boldfaith, knowing our Father is there to comfortand protect us, knowing He will strengthenus and set us free in the fire.

By: Lola SearcyIt was a 3 – run homer in the top of the sev-

enth- inning by the San Francisco Giant EdgarRenteria that put an end to the Cinderella likeseason for the Texas Rangers. This was theyear when all the “Eyes of Texas” were on RonWashington’s and the Texas Rangers ball team,as they vied for their very first World SeriesChampionship. Before a crowd of over 52,000plus fans, the Texas Rangers ended an historicbaseball season. The season began with theorganization being In limbo, not knowing whowould be the team’s new owners, to the acqui-sition of Pitcher Cliff Lee, to some of us (myselfincluded), glued to our television sets, holdingour collective breaths as the Rangers won gameafter game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and against the team who has won more post-season games and the most World Series titlesin the history of baseball, the New YorkYankees. After defeating the Yankees, I thought

beating San Francisco would be an easy assign-ment. But, in the game of baseball, good pitch-ing is the best defense and the Giants had theirshare of good pitching throughout the series. The Giants got it, but for whatever reason, theRangers never did. The Rangers’ pitchers strug-gled throughout the World Series. From gameone of the series, the Giants’ pitching game wasconsistent, which is what you have to have inorder to win.

We can talk for days about all the things theRangers did wrong and what went wrong andhow the Rangers lost, but the bottom line is,they had one heck of a season! And RonWashington, the new management along withthose crazy cardiac kids deserve all the praise. They gave us a tremendous ride, and I still thinkRON WASHINGTON SHOULD BE MANAGER OFTHE YEAR with a long extension on his contract.I can’t wait ‘til next year. BRAVO RANGERS!YOU MADE US PROUD!

By: Lola Searcy and Jordan BlairFrom his humble beginnings in Austin,

Texas, to a brief stint as Secretary of State underthe late Governor of Texas,Ann Richards, to becomingthe first African – AmericanMayor of the city of Dallas, one of the largest cities inthe United States ofAmerica, won election asMayor of Dallas by land-slides during his first bid forthe office, and by an evenbigger margin during hisre-election to the office ofMayor; a position he vacat-ed to run for the UnitedStates Senate in 2002.

Ambassador Ron Kirk’spolitical career is one to beadmired, flanked by a num-ber of firsts; he now serves as the first African –American Trade Representative to the firstAfrican – American President of the UnitedStates of America, President Barack Obama.Ambassador Kirk stopped by Perry’s steakhousein North Dallas to talk to members of the Blackmedia and outline his role in the Obama admin-istration as Trade Representative. As the TradeRepresentative, he functions as PresidentObama’s lead negotiator on all internationaltrade matters. He also specializes in bilateral, regional and multilateral trade and investmentissues; expansion of market access for Americangoods and services; international commodityagreements; and negotiations affecting USimport policies. US Trade Representative RonKirk is front and center in negotiations to removetrade barriers worldwide; a job he is more thanqualified to do.

Although Kirk would rather not be known asthe first Black Mayor of Dallas, nevertheless inhis 1995 election landslide—which included sup-port from Blacks and Whites, Democrats andRepublicans, he proved he has what it takes towork across party lines to get the job done. Hismission is to travel to various places, talk with

people from around the globe in order to get afeel of what is happening here and abroad so hecan make decisions that best benefit the people

in business in the UnitedStates. While AmbassadorKirk admits there are manyproblems facing the coun-try; he also knows byworking together, theseproblems can be easilysolved.

His purpose onThursday was to assurethose in attendance thatdespite what theRepublicans are saying, there are stop gap meas-ures in place that are start-ing to work. He went on toinform the media that eventhough the Republicans

will never admit it, these are the same measuresthey would take if they were in office. And, ifPresident Obama had not made the choices he’smade, this country would be in the middle ofanother “great depression.” Ambassador Kirkexpressed his pride in working for PresidentObama stating, “He is a very smart man and atremendous leader. He came up through theranks, he has worked with people just like youand me, and President Obama has made sometough decisions, but they will take the country inthe right direction.” Ambassador Kirk said,“President Obama has tremendous insight onhow to fix the country. He never complainsabout the problems he inherited from the BushAdministration, he stays focused on fixing theproblems at hand.” And lastly, Ambassador Kirkreminded the audience that politics are local. So, get out and vote! He thanked the membersof the Black Media for coming out and he looksforward to meeting with them again on his nexttrip to Dallas. Now that the midterm electionsare over and the Republicans have regained con-trol of the House of Representatives, it will beinteresting to see if they will work with PresidentObama on the proposed trade measures.

Sunday wasHalloween. Theyhad a costumeparty at the newStadium inArlington. TheJ a c k s o n v i l l eJaguars came asplayoff con-tenders, some-thing they’ve

been having trouble portraying lately, but played that role very well Sunday. The Cowboys came as a Zero, a rolethey’ve been playing really well lately. And the Cowboys gave an Academyaward winning performance Sunday.

The Jags came here with a team thatwas about as inept as our economy.Thirty minutes with these Zero’s, theirquarterback David Garrard had the best

half an NFL quarterback has had per-centage wise this season 10/ 10, 126yards – 2 touchdowns. Derek Coxeventually had 2 interceptions,Mercedes Lewis 2 touchdowns. Theseare not pro bowlers these are Jaguars ateam that a 1-5 Cowboys team wasfavored to beat.

A defense that was thought to beSuper Bowl quality, forced the Jags topunt only once in the first half. Theyalso gave the Jags their longest touch-down pass of the year, a 42yarder. MikeJenkins, Gerald Sensabaugh, Allen Ball, and Orlando Scandrick have to be theworst covering secondary the Cowboyshas ever had, if not, I know they’re theworst tacklers in the NFL. OrlandoScandrick is the best argument I’veever heard for why Boise State should-n’t be part of the bowl coalition. If he’s

a product of Boise State they shouldnever let them in.

I didn’t think Jon Kitna was still NFLcaliber. I thought he played wellenough to win with a good team. I thinksome of his wide receivers and runningbacks are less than NFL quality and thatincludes Miles Austin. Miles, not only ishe beginning to drop passes, he dropsthem in the hands of other teams. Allhis drops started coming after he start-ed being a song and dance man (jump-ing over Roy Williams’ head).

It was suggested to me by someoneI respect greatly that Wade is still tryingto play 3-4 defenses with 4-3 person-nel. That could explain why theCowboys’ blitzes are being picked upvery easily and in most cases wel-comed, by opposing OffensiveCoordinators.

After last week’s loss, I thought thisteam was a replica of the 1989Cowboys. But that team had a betteroffensive line, this team doesn’t haveone at all. With the exception ofDeMarcus Ware, Antony Spenser, JayRatliff, and Maybe Dez Bryant, theycould have traded the rest of them fordraft choices. But they let the tradedeadline pass. I think the 89 Cowboyshad a lot more talent than this team.

Before you think that was a joke,Remember Michael Irvin ,Nate Newton,Troy Aikman, Ken Norton, Jim Jeffcoat,Kevin Googan, Mark Tuinea, Bill Bates ,Hershel Walker and I’m sure I’ve misseda few. Get you a pencil and match theseguys at their positions with the presentteam and tell me when you see me.Looking at the schedule I think therecord will be the same.

Dear Dr. Hollie, My friend has gotteninvolved with a manthat wants to changeher into someone so faraway from who she is.He wants her to be sub-missive and docile, butI think he takes it tothe extreme and goesabout it the wrong way. He’s making changes inher from not wearingmake up, all the way tonot talking to friends she’s knownmany years. At first she was reallyhappy and she said she didn’t mindthe changes, but now when I seeher, she seems so depressed. It’sgotten so that I don’t really like tobe around her because she makesme sad, and I just want to tell herto wake up and leave him alone. But I don’t. I understand that it isnot my place to tell her who she canand cannot be with, but it is affect-ing my life at this point because Iworry about her all the time. I am

losing sleep becausewe are so close and Ifeel her when she isunhappy about some-thing. I am one of thefew people he allowsher to have contactwith on a regular basis,so I definitely don’twant to cancel ourfriendship now.Unfriendly Changes

Dear Changes,Friendships are tricky and sometimes wehave to watch in silence. What you cando is mention her behavioral changeswithout trying to attach them to any sit-uation or person allow her an opportu-nity to first see if she is able to observewhat you are seeing and what the possi-ble cause could be. The church school lessonwas “God’s presenceComforts and Assures”Ps.63. These are David’sthoughts during the time hisson Absalom had attemptedto take the kingdom. WhatDavid missed most of all wasthe Temple worship. He saidhis soul “thirsted” for theLord. Unlike many churchmembers who can missgoing to the worship servicefor long periods of time yet

never miss the presence of the Lord and wor-ship. David loved the Lord with all his heart, hesaid he lie awake at night meditating on theLord. His condition did not dominate histhoughts, he did not have a pity party, he med-itated on the lord he knew that the Lord keepthose in perfect peace who have a mind stayedon him. The Morning message was delivered by

Elder L.T.Morgan “THE LORD'S THOUGHTSTOWARDS HIS PEOPLE.” (Jer 29:8-14). Israelhad sinned against God and forsaken him. There was a false prophet named Hananiah, telling the people that they and all the templevessels would be returned in two years. Watchout for false prophets! The Lord had toldJeremiah that the deported people and the tem-ple vessels wouldn't be restored to the landuntil He visited the exiles at the end of theirseventy-year captivity. God sent a word to thefalse prophet, the personal message was thatthe false prophet would die before the year wasup, and two months later, he died. God’s wordsof encouragement to his people then are a wordfor his people now: “For I know the thoughtsthat I think toward you, saith the LORD,thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give youan expected end.” God desires the best for hispeople but they must walk in obedience to hisword. How’s your walk?God bless

FRIENDSHIPS, Continued from Page 2for men in their times of need. Withoutfriends it is often difficult to overcome thehardships of life. We all need support, affir-mation and interaction with people who carefor us. If you want a friend, you must showyourself to be a friend, wrote Solomon.

An example of friendship remains withme as vividly as the moment I first heard ofit as a boy. In his first seasons with theBrooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson, the firstblack man to play Major League baseball, faced venom nearly everywhere he traveled. He suffered fastballs at his head, spikings onthe bases, brutal epithets from the opposingdugouts and from the crowds. During onegame in Boston, the taunts and racial slursseemed to reach a peak. In the midst of this, another Dodger, a Southern white namedPee Wee Reese, called timeout. He walkedfrom his position at shortstop towardRobinson at second base, put his arm aroundRobinson’s shoulder, and stood there withhim for what seemed like a long time. Thegesture spoke more eloquently than thewords: This man is my friend. Amen!

Friendships provide correction, reproofand training from someone we know andtrust. We all have blind spots in our lives thatfriends are able to help us see. There aremany areas where we all need to improve.Without friends we become narrow in our

thinking and unable to see a bigger picture ofwhat God wants us to become in Christ.Ephesians 4:15 says, “Allow the Lord to usefriends to help you grow in all aspects inChrist as they speak the truth in love.” Amen!

Friendship is born at that moment whenone person says to another, "What! You, too?I thought I was the only one." Friendshipsalso have dangers, for friends can give badadvice, double-cross us, hurt you when theypull away from you and even lead you awayfrom the Lord. Moses wrote in Deuteronomy13:6-9, "If your very own brother or your sonor daughter or the wife you love or your clos-est friend secretly entices you with, let us goand worship other gods, do not yield to himor listen to him. Show no pity. Do not sparehim or shield him." Amen! Be careful ofallowing friends to lead you astray or to fol-low after their complacent ways. Ask theLord to help you to remember that youbecome like the people we associate with.

Choose your friends carefully or you willbecome like those who have settled formediocrity, faulty assumptions or standardsthat are less than biblical ideas. In a surveyof more than 40,000 Americans these quali-ties were most valued in a friend: 1. The abil-ity to keep confidences 2. Loyalty 3. Warmthand affection.

Friendships bring the benefit of allowingus to disciple people who need to learn moreof Christ’s Will for their life. Paul discipledTimothy in the context of a friendly relation-ship. He wrote, 2nd Timothy 2:2 says, "Thethings you have heard from me in the pres-ence of many witnesses, the same commit tofaithful men who will be able to teach othersalso." Amen! Utilize your friendship in a dis-ciple-making and teaching ministry. Do notjust assume that friendships are for yourown gratification.

Ask the Lord to help you find friendshipsin several mentoring relationships that willhelp you bring people to a higher level ofspiritual and ministry maturity.

Friendships should be on different levels. There are some friendships that will be on amere acquaintance level, some will involvethe sharing of facts, others will allow us toshare more of our emotions and inner mostfeelings, other will be more engaging as weinvolve ourselves in sharing responsibilitiesand then finally there will be some rarefriendships where we are able to be com-pletely transparent, open and honest with afew close friends. Ask the Lord to help yoube filled with the knowledge of His Will in allspiritual wisdom and understanding so youcan know what level of friendship to havewith each person you meet.

Lastly, your opinion of people dependsless upon what you see in them than uponwhat they make you see in yourselves. Nowyou know the facts about friendship. Amen!
