Culture Note Cinco de mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the invading French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is not, as is commonly misunderstood, Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated September 15 and 16. Cinco de mayo has become an occasion for parties and celebration in the United States, even among people of other heritages.
