www.emuleonaygazette.com.au March 2013 1 Just 4 days before Christmas, Nine-year-old Connor Ansell of Glenbrook was diagnosed with Leukaemia, so not only did he and his family have a totally lousy Christmas, this year is not going at all well. Connor has spent much of the year to date in hospital. Connor is just one of 11,500 Australians each year to be given the devastating news that they have leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder. Although survival rates are improving, blood cancers like these are the second biggest cause of cancer death in Australia. The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding, but you can help by supporting the World’s Greatest Shave this month. Connor’s dad, Mark, has registered a team for the World’s Greatest Shave on March 14-17. Mark said, “Our team are friends, family and anyone else that is inspired by connor’s spirit, strength and fighting qualities in beating this horrible disease. we are raising funds so that one day every kid can be cured of leukemia.” Many of Connor’s good buddies have joined the “Inspired By Connor” team – we’re prepared to lose our locks for a very worthy cause. One of Con’s best friends, Finlay, said, “My hair is long enough to go in a pony tail, but I’m going to shave it off for Con because that’s what friends are for!” The money raised will go towards research, which is needed to find better treatments and cures for leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. From the Editor

Easter Blessings to all our readers for the month of March. My son Finlay was very pleased when he realised that Easter, being quite early this year, doesn’t fall in the school holidays. That means all the school kids (and the long-suffering teachers) get a short holiday just before the end of term.

Foremost on our minds though, is Finlay’s best buddy, Connor, who is sick with leukaemia. Along with lots of friends of Connor’s family, we’re both going to do the shave (see the front page). Finlay is quite precious about his long hair, so it’s a big thing, although the least he can do for his friend. Keep your eyes out for the ‘after’ shots in next month’s edition! Here’s the link if you’d like to sponsor our team... http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/markansell

I’ve included some deliciously fun Easter recipes for you to try out this Easter - nothing too healthy, but if you reduce your chocolate egg consumption, I’m sure you can fit in a couple of these sweet treats.

Of course, you can always wear off the Easter indulgences by getting into training for the “Relay For Life” - read all about it on page 12.

Enjoy the Easter edition of your community newspaper. Steady on the eggs!

Vicki

Bicentenary Bridges Great DivideIt’s almost 200 years since the first Blue Mountains crossing,

when Australians will retrace this deciding moment for European settlement and our nation.

To recognise the starting point of Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth’s epic journey at Blaxland’s farm, St Marys, Penrith City Council will launch a three-week series of major commemorations in May 2013. The celebrations cover the start of the trek up the mountains in May 1813 to the explorers’ triumphant return some three weeks later.

Penrith City Council has worked with a community committee to develop these not-to-be-missed activities: – Breakfast Launch and Re-enactment trek - 11 May– Family Camp Out on the Nepean River - 11 May– Historical Festival at Mamre Homestead - 19 May– “Back to Emu Plains” weekend - 25 and 26 May

To add to the excitement, Penrith Library will hold a “Makings of a City History Conference Crossing the Great Divide” on 9 March and Penrith Civic Centre will host an exhibition through April-May.

Penrith Mayor Mark Davies said an extra treat would be appearances by renowned Aussie actor Jack Thompson as part of Council’s Bicentenary program. “We are proud to have Legendary Aussie actor Jack Thompson is the “face” of the Bicentenary commemorations

Australian icon, Jack Thompson as patron of Penrith City Council’s Blue Mountains crossing commemorations. Keep an eye out as he’ll be attending several events,” Councillor Davies said.

For more details on individual events please call Council on 4732 7645. For details on Penrith Library’s history conference call 4732 7891.

God’s Answers to Big QuestionsIf you could ask God one question, and knew it would be answered, what would it be? Why am I here? What am I meant to do? Why do good people suffer? Why is there so much bad news? Will I go to heaven? And the list goes on...

Our lives matter, as do the questions we ask as we live them. But where do we find the answers? How do we make sense of our experiences? Over the month of February we’ve been asking people in our community what their question for God would be. We’ve asked because we want to hear what’s on people’s minds in Emu Plains, Leonay and Emu Heights. We’ve also asked because we’re confident God has answers for us, already delivered through the Lord Jesus Christ, and written for us in the Bible. On the face of it, His answers may not be as specific as some of the questions we pose, but on the other hand, his answers invite us to revisit our questions and dig even deeper into the matters that matter most.

So why not join us at church in the three weeks leading up to Easter, March 10th, 17th ,24th , and Easter itself, March 29th and 31st. We’ll make a start on God’s answers to the three most commonly asked questions (see our web site to see what they are), as well as ‘Why did Jesus have to die?’ on Good Friday, and ‘Can I stake my life on the resurrection?’ on Easter Sunday. We’ll cap it off with a free community fun day on Easter Sunday. If you have Big Questions you’d like answers to, why don’t you join us.

Quilters That CareThe 20 ladies who make

up the Caring Hearts Community Quilters have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on the colourful quilts they have been working on these past twelve months.

These quilts will be donated to Nepean, Hawkesbury, Springwood and Blue Mountains palliative care and neo-natal wards, Barnardos, Blue Mountains Cancer Support, Penrith Women’s Refuge and Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital. These quilts are made with love and the hope that they’ll bring comfort and support to those in their time of need.

The group makes, on average, 120 quilts each year and the reality is that the quilts are made not only with love, but also with expensive fabric and wadding. While the group is self-funded, it still needs community support. To raise money and awareness, the Quilters are holding their annual “Airing of the Quilts” at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum, Great Western Highway, Emu Plains, on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th April, 10am – 4pm.

In addition to the quilts on display there will be live music, sausage sizzle, Devonshire teas, Trading table, book stall, beautiful hand-made gifts suitable for mother’s Day, and a raffle, with proceeds going to Breast Cancer.

In the event of inclement weather, the Airing cannot be held. For further information, phone 0438 670 012.

Service Times: Sundays @ 8.00am, 9.30am and 6.30pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week

Exciting First Day At High SchoolA few nerves were obvious at McCarthy Catholic College as

the 170 new Year 7 students began arriving for their first day at high school this year. Some faces told of trepidation but all students spoke of their excitement and obvious anticipation of fresh challenges. Perhaps, the more anxious faces were those of accompanying parents; their children were growing up!

The instruction to Year 7 students to give their parents a hug and say goodbye, witnessed more red eyed parents than students! The latter cheerfully went off to activities. It is suspected that the highly polished shoes will never again display the same level of gloss as they did on Day One.

Pick Up For Our Environment Penrith residents can clear their homes of old and unwanted

e-waste and chemicals and join neighbourly efforts to keep their area looking its best with ‘clean up’ events in March.

Gather your old televisions, computers and other electronic goods for Electronic Waste Drop Off Day. Held at Jamison Park, South Penrith (entry off Jamison Road, opposite Castlereagh Street) on Saturday 9 March, it’s an easy way to recycle unwanted electronic clutter. It runs between 9am and 3.30pm; check penrithcity.nsw.gov.au for the full list of items accepted.

You can do the environment an extra favour while disposing of household chemicals and at Penrith City Council’s free Household Chemical CleanOut on Saturday 16 March. Between 9am and 3:30pm, drive into Jamison Park, South Penrith, follow the directions and await the staff who’ll unload your boot or trailer of the chemicals. Accepted items include solvents, household and pool cleaners, car batteries, paint, pesticides, poisons and even fire extinguishers. Visit cleanout.com.au or call 4732 7615 for details, including how to transport chemicals safely.

Thanks to community participation in these three events previously and other sustainable initiatives, Penrith has been recognised as a leader; winning the prestigious Keep Australia Beautiful 2012 titles NSW Overall Sustainable City 2012, National Winner of the Young Legends Award 2012 and National Winner of the Resource Recovery and Waste Management Award 2012.

Never miss another clean up event:Register for free text message reminders about upcoming

recycling initiatives and events by emailing your name, home address and mobile number to [email protected] orphone 4732 7615.

Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are delighted to welcome Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital to our Border Collie Fun Day. Dr Camille Brandtwillbeourofficialvetonthedayandwillalsobeofferingfree veterinary checks and answering your Border Collie health questions.

Their inaugural event was held last year and was a huge success. The highlight of the day was the group photo of as many dogs as possible without owners in the shot and this photo went viral. This year, they have official approval to attempt a Guinness

World Record for the ‘most number of dogs ever recorded in a professional photo shoot.’

They need more than 101 Border Collies to gain the World Record and it will involve the dogs being photographed by Professional photographer, Fiona Erskine.

From the response that they have had, they anticipate around 200 Border Collies registering for the World Record attempt, and several hundred spectators. They will be reaching out to media for coverage of the World Record Attempt on the day.

They have confirmed the Border Collie Club NSW, Agility club, Flyball club and a Wonderdog Tricks demo. They are organising stalls, interactive activities , a raffle and lots of giveaways. PARENTS’ CORNERArticle by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph:0409986121Email:[email protected] Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com

Ever have something happen that upset you, and you just wanted someone to listen to you? You didn’t want advice or criticism. You wanted someone to acknowledge your feelings, to empathise, and to hear you. You wanted someone to tell you how much it sucks, and how disappointed you must be.

And, so it is with children. Acknowledging your child’s feelings won’t make them soft

or sooks or cry babies. It will make them feel understood. They will feel seen and heard, valued and loved. And they will get over their hurt quicker with less resentment because meeting the need extinguishes the need. It will help them bounce back from disappointment, because life can be full of hurt and disappointment and it’s nice to be able to have someone to talk to about it. A child that experiences empathy will become empathic.

So, how do you do it?1. Notice the emotion Notice how you think your child is feeling. It’s ok if you guess incorrectly, your child will usually tell you what he or she is feeling if you approach it this way.2. Clarify with a question A question will help your child figure out how he or she feels.3. Reflect the emotion Reflect the emotion your child is telling you or state what you believe your child is feeling.4. Locate the emotion in the body Emotions can be felt in the body and the head. Part of emotional intelligence is recognising when you are starting to feel a strong emotion by noticing what your body is doing and what your mind is thinking.5. Empathise Talk about how you would feel in the same situation.6. Explore

You might like to follow up with a question or comment to get more details about the situation or explore more emotions.

Notice how in this process, there is not a barrage of questions, advice, or moral reasoning. The parent does not dismiss or deny how the child is feeling or try to distract him from his feelings. The parent does not tell him to “get over it” or “get on with it” or “don’t worry, it could be worse”. The parent does not jump into solving the problem or talking about what happened to her once upon a time. The parent does not take the other person’s side.

It’s a process of delving down into the child’s feelings and emotions with him and coming out the other side together. If you do this often enough, your child will learn to accept and manage her own strong emotions, learn how to solve problems, and learn to know when she is coping well or when she needs to get help. This is emotional intelligence.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?But this process can be difficult for parents. If you are not

comfortable with some of these strong feelings, you will try to push your child through it as quickly as possible to resolve your own discomfort. Most parents say they can deal with extremes of most emotions, but anger pushes their buttons. The important thing is acknowledging that you are uncomfortable with some emotions and working your way through it too. If you think back to your childhood, your own parents may not have been comfortablewith the same emotions you have difficultywithnow. That’s why it’s called a process, every day we do a bit better.

WHAT’S ON?

Lewers Learning CentreThe Gallery has a dynamic changing exhibition program

and this year we have a designated gallery space targeting the interests and needs of young audiences - The Lewers Learning Centre. The Lewers Learning Centre is a new initiative of the Gallery, producing themed exhibitions across the year with a focus on family based educational outcomes for children between 3 – 12 years of age.

For its inaugural exhibition Birds, we bring together contemporary artists Joanna Braithwaite, Joan Ross, and Adrienne Doig, Jim Cooper, Garry and Leigh Namponan in an exploration of the world of birds across the curriculum. Lewers Learning Centre is located in Lewers House (the original home of the Lewers family). Birds turns the Gallery’s curatorial methodology on its head by considering the interests of young audiences first and then working from that perspective to design exhibitions that ignite the imagination and arouse the curiosity of young visitors.

There are three exhibitions programmed for the year starting with Birds, Story, and Scissor, Paper, Rock (the Boat). Birds on show until 19 May, Story, 25 May – 15 September and Scissor, Paper, Rock (the Boat) 21 September – 24 November. The Gallery is free to enter and open daily 9-5pm.

Joan Ross and Adrienne Doig are both Blue Mountains based artists and joined us at the Gallery in February for a very special event. Visitors were privileged to hear directly from the artists, learning about their creative work and the process behind it. In fact Joan Ross mentions it’s always good to share what your work is about with people who are keen to also share the knowledge. “I am very interested in keeping creativity in the hands and minds of young people, because as the world focuses more and more on fiscal outcomes, imagination and creativity can be the first things to be cut. So very glad that the LLC is on a different trajectory and keen to keep art a part of our lives”.

Birds is inspired by the abundance of bird life in the Gallery garden and Gerald Lewers’ sculptural practice. The artists and artworks in Birds have been selected to represent a variety of material and conceptual approaches to the theme and for their potential to foster a sense of wonder and inspire creativity.

Kare Sansui Landscape Kare sansui is Japanese for ‘dry landscape’ – a garden often

created in the absence of water. Kare sansui is a stylised landscape, comprising white pebbles or gravel punctuated by the placement of granite rocks to imitate the flow of water and land formations of mountain and plain. Minimal in form, Kare sansui seek to reveal the essence of nature, and are an open invitation to meditate on the meaning of life. Found in Japan – most famously Kyoto – such gardens have their origins in ancient China. In Japan Kare sansui gardens were traditionally created within walled Buddhist temples as a space where monks and visitors might contemplate. In the 20th century they were popularised in public parks and increasingly, domestic gardens. In western cultures Kare sansui are often referred to as ‘zen’ gardens, in reference to their spiritual dimension and to an applied minimalist aesthetic.

In creating a Kare sansui, installers use a three pronged wooden rake known as a Kumade. These rakes make deep furrows in the pebble. Creating the variation of pattern is a creative and inspiring challenge, which demands precision across the entire Kare sansui field.

The two Kare sansui installed within the Main Gallery take traditional and contemporary forms. Traditional Kare sansui is the presentation of white pebble or gravel, and the select placement of granite rocks with a moss patina. In contrast the contemporary Kare sansui makes a feature of local Riverstone, within a field of white pebble. In design it responds to local environs reflecting our special regional formations of Blue Mountains, Emu Plains and Nepean River.

Kare sansui are best appreciated from a seated or perimeter position. They are not designed to be walked upon or through, as this would disturb both the atmospheric ‘stillness’ of the garden and the fine raked lines.

At the height of the Australian summer we invite audiences to contemplate these serene and beautiful landscapes. The Gardens presented herein were designed and installed

by Justin Smith and Mathew Rush of Cowra Japanese Gardens and Cultural Centre. Both men are specialists in the design and maintenance of Japanese styled Gardens.

Bonsai BonansaNepean Bonsai Society will be divulging the secrets about

the living art of Bonsai. Bonsai is a traditional Japanese art form dating back over a thousand years using miniature trees grown in containers. As an art form, the emphasis of Bonsai is on perspective, movement, size, texture and to some extent, fantasy. Join us in the main Gallery where you can view the spectacular Bonsai on display as well as learn from the experts about how to create, manage and care for these amazing plants.Bonsai Talk & DemonstrationNepean Bonsai Society will be providing an in depth talk and demonstration on the living art of Bonsai.Date: 24 March 12.30pm $10 booking essential 4735 1100

Penrith Relay for Life The Penrith Relay for Life is an annual event held over 24 hours to symbolise that cancer sufferers are living with cancer for 24 hours a day. Throughout the 24 hours of the event, most teams try to have at least one member walking at all times to briefly become part of a sufferer’s battle.

Over the last 12 years the Penrith Relay has raised over $1.9 million via the generosity of the Penrith and wider Penrith communities. The Cancer Council of NSW using these funds for cancer research, support, awareness and education.

The event brings together those suffering cancer, their careers, family, friends, colleagues and supporters in an event which allows them to fight back against this dreaded disease, by raising funds for research and services in the wider and local communities. We celebrate with those that have won their battle and we remember those that we have lost.

During Relay, Team members take turns walking around an Oval, camping out and enjoying entertainment, ceremonies, food and games in a carnival like atmosphere. Teams create awareness in the community for this worthy cause by fund raising. Each team’s fundraising methods are limited only by their imagination. Some different & interesting ways of fundraising are; raffles, guessing competitions, selling crafts, garage sales, trivia nights, corporate sponsorship, and talent quests even sponsored walkers.

The Penrith Relay for Life will be held from 10am Saturday 4th May to 10am Sunday 5th May at Howell Oval Penrith (Cricket grounds opposite Panthers).

If you would like to be a part of this amazing and unique event by registering a team, becoming a sponsor or supporter, joining the organising committee or just want more information, please call Nathan Dart from Cancer Council NSW on (02) 9354 2004.

The website for the Penrith Relay for Life 2013 is now available for you to register your team or to find further information about the event. Let’s bring together the whole community for this wonderful cause, let’s find a CURE for Cancer and save those we love.

THIS SPORTING LIFE

Powerful Pennants Team Set to Conquer the GreensLeonay Golf Club has announced its senior Men’s Pennants team for 2013, which will be led by scratch marker Andrew Moon.

The team is a healthy mixture of age and experience, with a highest handicap of five. This pedigree of talent looks to be one of the strongest senior Pennant teams put together by Leonay Golf Club in recent years.

Leonay’s draw will see them play in the southern half of the Metropolitan Area, meeting Bexley Golf Club, Kareela Golf Club and Macquarie Links Golf Club on a home and away basis during the season. The full team is: Wes Cochran, Jeff Barnes, Chris Blakeley, Scott Chambers, Ian Barnes, David Stevenson (Captain), Mark Cain, Jason Skybinsky, Simon Masters and Andrew Moon, with Leonay Club Captain Ron Bradley taking on the role of Manager and Golf Club Committee member John Egan Assistant Manager.

Leonay hosted 2012 Division Five premiers Bexley GC in the first game of the Pennant season at Leonay but could not take full advantage of the home course, falling four and half games to three. On Februray 17 it was a different story though – Leonay GC knocked over raging hot favourites Macquarie Links by four games to three.

The Club also plans to run Masters, B Grade and C Grade Pennants teams in 2013 and those lists will be released in the next 4-6 weeks.

(L to R): Simon Masters, Andrew Moon, David Stevenson, Chris Blakeley, Jeff Barnes, Wesley Cochran, Jason Skybinsky, Ian Barnes, Scott Chalmers, Mark Cain, Ron Bradley (manager), John Egan (assistant manager)
