Dear colleagues, dear EMS members, Welcome to the new edition of the EMS newsletter. The aim of this newsletter is to keep you updated with news from EMS and from the microscopy community. for the second half of 2017, five high quality events applied to the EMS sponsored event call. After careful comparison, the Executive Board decided to sponsor four events that proposed significant inputs on microscopy. The selected meetings are: 1. Sources, Interaction with Matter, Detection and Analysis of Low Energy Electrons 2017 (SIMDALEE2017), Santa Margherita, Pula, Sardinia, September 18-22, 2017 http://www.iap.tuwien.ac.at/www/simdalee2017/index 2. XVI International Conference on Electron Microscopy (EM2017), Warsaw, Poland, September 10-13, 2017 www.em2017.pl 3. Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science 2017 (MFS-2017), Zaragoza, Spain, September 5-8, 2017 http://ina.unizar.es/mfs2017/ 4. 15 th Conference on Methods and Applications in Fluorescence (MAF 2017), Bruges, Belgium, September 10-13, 2017 http://maf2017.org The EMS Executive Board will hold its second meeting of 2017 at the first EMS extension, the Microscopy Conference (MC2017), SwissTech Convention Center, Lausanne, Switzerland, 21 to 25 August 2017. The EMS General Assembly will also take place there on the 23 of August at 6:00pm in the convention centre. Since generally EMS is pleased to share the ceremonies and meetings between the two extensions when there are two as in 2017, the EMS Outstanding Paper Award ceremony for 2017 (see also newsletter 56) will be held during the second EMS extension of the year, the 13 th Multinational Congress on Microscopy, Hotel Lone, Rovinj, Croatia 24 to 29 September 2017. Please remember the date: Wednesday 25 th September from 3:00 to 4:00pm. Short presentations of the awardees will be delivered to highlight the outstanding content and the novelty of the 2017 selected papers. The next European event of high interest for our community will be the 17 th Eu- ropean Microscopy Congress, EMC2020, in Copenhagen, Denmark hosted by SCANDEM, organised by the Royal Microscopical Society, which acts as pro- fessional conference organiser, PCO, and obviously under the auspices of the EMS, as well as the IfSM. The Congress will be held from 23 to 28 August, 2020 at “The Bella Center” (see the following figure) under the presidency of Prof Klaus Qvortrup. Copenhagen is an ideal location within the Nordic region for EMC2020, it is conveniently accessible from nearly all locations in Europe by either land or air. The beautiful city of Copenhagen is compact and easy to navigate with the majority of hotels, ve- nues, sights and attractions within walking distance of each other. Bella Center offers a large and very convenient exhibition and convention centre, just a few minutes away by the Copenhagen Metro from the city centre, Copenhagen Central Station and Copenhagen International Airport. Not only will EMC2020 give you the opportunity to see the latest and greatest in microscopy and imaging, you will also be able to explore this incredible city, said to be the world’s most liveable city. The organization of the 17 th European Microscopy Congress in August 2020 is moving ahead as planned. We invite you to visit the congress webpage: http://www.emc2020.eu and we look forward to welcoming you there to enjoy the “Danish Touch”! Have you already received the 2016 EMS Yearbook?! This review is a cross-section of the EMS highlights of the past year and focuses on personal impressions from members, meeting organizers, award winners, scholarship holders, and others points. The JEOL-EM Award lecturers at EMC 2016 have provided high level scientific contributions, the early stage researchers who received an EMS scholarship to attend this meeting have delivered nice reports of their experiences, and a note on the winners of the 2016 Outstanding Paper Awards receiving their plaques during the dinner party have been also added. Several reports of other EMS sponsored events have shown the lively activity in the field of microscopy throughout Europe. from the other submitted reports, it is clear that many institutes are increasing their instru- mental capacities with novel microscopes of various types so we can expect to see many more interesting new results in future meetings.
