AAUW November Program ~ New Leaders’ Reflections and

Suggestions

Tues. November 12  What  do  we  understand  about  young  leaders  who  are  half  a  century  younger  than  some  of  us  ?    Do  we  know  what  they  expect  from  “community?”    Do  we  know  what  animates  and  inspires  them?    We  will  have  a  chance  for  dialogue  with  young  professionals  from  a  number  of  areas.    It  will  be  enjoyable  to  learn  how  their  values  have  been  formed,  what  their  views  are  on  our  world,  and  how  they  handle  their  jobs  and  obligations.    We  will  be  able  to  discuss  differences  and  learn  from  each  other.

Join  us  at  the  buffet  line  at  5:15  in  the  UWMC  Cafeteria

Or  come  at  6:30  to  the  Terrace  Room  for  the  New  Leaders’  Reflections  and  Suggestions    -‐‑  with  Tiffany  Bredeck,  Tyler  Voyt,  David  Xiong,  Haley  Houghton,

Moderators:    Doug  Hosler  and  Patti  Twait

 FILM NIGHTS

Want to kick back and relax while viewing films that represent women and girls in various

lights? Let’s gather for film nights and bonding in smaller groups. I’ll be sending out information soon, so let me know if you are interested and willing to bring a few munchies. Barb Keller [email protected] or 715-675-9756

LUNCH  BUNCH  AND  MONK  GARDENS  Review

Our  October  walk  in  Monk  Gardens  was  delightful,  and  the  weather  was  perfect.  And  our  guide,  Darla  Zastrow,    knew  the  answers  to  our  questions.    The  plans  for  completion  of  the  Gardens  will  not  come  to  total  fruition  for  some  time,  but  little  by  little  it  is  developing.    We  were  all  very  pleased  with  the  tour  and  recommend  it  highly  to  anyone  who  likes  beautiful  things.    We  had  a  fun  lunch  at  A  &  W  before  the  tour.    It  is  a  great  place  to  eat,  loaf,  and  chat  for  a  while.    Thanks,  Sande  Sliwicki  and  Marian  Seagren  Hall    for  coordinating  this  event.

$avvy $ession Review – Taxes – How to Lighten Them

An  inquisitive  group  met  at  Marathon  Public  Library  on  October  1  for  the  $avvy  $ession  on  Taxes  presented  by  Ms.  Sherri  Knauf  of  Wausau  Tax  and  Accounting.    Our  wide-‐‑ranging  and  specific  as  well  as  general  questions  were  answered.    Thanks  to  Diane  Echols  for  making  the  arrangements.    We  have  one  more  block  in  our  financial  wall  for  fiscal  protection.

$10,000 AAUW Community Action Grant Report

Girl Scout Leadership Council

We came, they talked, we learned, and we felt that AAUW funds have been well invested in these impressive young women from throughout Marathon County. At Lucy’s table we even sang Girls Scout songs that have been sung for half a century. We heard from poised young women prepared to challenge stereotypes and advocate for opportunities for girls and young women. We also discussed areas in which Girl Scouts and AAUW could collaborate. Thank you, Girl Scouts, for planning a delicious evening of food for the body and food for thought.

We  should  aspire  to  inspire  before  we  expire  .  .  .  .

November 12 book...

The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje

In  the  early  1950s,  an  eleven-‐year-‐old  boy  boards  a  huge  liner  bound  for  England  –  a  ‘castle  that  was  to  cross  the  sea’.  At  mealtimes,  he  is  placed  at  the  lowly  ‘Cat's  Table’  with  an  eccentric  group  of  grown-‐ups  and  two  other  boys,  Cassius  and  Ramadhin.  As  the  ship  makes  its  way  across  the  Indian  Ocean,  through  the  Suez  Canal,  into  the  Mediterranean,  the  boys  become  involved  in  the  worlds  and  stories  of  the  adults  around  them,  tumbling  from  one  adventure  and  delicious  discovery  to  another,  ‘bursting  all  over  the  place  like  freed  mercury’.  And  at  night,  the  boys  spy  on  a  shackled  prisoner  –  his  crime  and  fate  a  galvanizing  mystery  that  will  haunt  them  forever.    As  the  narrative  moves  from  the  decks  and  holds  of  the  ship  and  the  boy’s  adult  years,  it  tells  a  spellbinding  story  about  the  difference  between  the  magical  openness  of  childhood  and  the  burdens  of  earned  understanding  –  about  a  life-‐long  journey  that  began  unexpectedly  with  a  spectacular  sea  voyage,  when  all  on  board  were  free    of  the  realities  of  the  earth...With  the  ocean  liner  a  brilliant  microcosm  for  the  floating  dream  of  childhood,  The  Cat’s  Table  is  a  vivid,  poignant  and  thrilling  book,  full  of  Ondaatje’s  trademark  set-‐pieces  and  breathtaking  images:  a  story  told  with  a  child’s  sense  of  wonder  by  a  novelist  at  the  very  height  of  his  powers...

 synopsis  from  Barnes  and  Noble.
