WHAT IS THE APPRENTICESHIP LEVY? From April 2017 all employers with an annual payroll of £3 million, or over, will have to pay the Apprenticeship Levy at a rate of 0.5% of their payroll bill (less an initial £15,000 allowance). The Levy will be reported and paid through the existing HMRC PAYE process. Levy payments will be held in a digital account which you will able to use for approved apprenticeship training.

Non-levy paying companies will still have access to government funding for apprenticeships.

You can find more information on the Government website.

STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE NOW • Register to manage your digital account now! www.gov.uk/guidance/ manage-apprenticeship-funds

• Consider where apprentices could fit into your business and add value. Are there areas in the business that would benefit from a fresh perspective an apprentice could bring? You can recruit new apprentices or upskills existing staff. Would line managers like to nominate existing employees for additional training?

• Research training providers at findapprenticeshiptraining.sfa. bis.gov.uk

Remember to negotiate best value for your business with your training provider.

NON-LEVY PAYING EMPLOYERSYou will still be able to access apprenticeship funding but from 1 May 2017 there will be some changes giving you more control over designing, choosing and paying for apprenticeship training.

Non-levy paying employers will have 90% of their training and assessment costs paid for by Government. A 10% contribution will be made by employers to the cost, paid directly to the training provider. This cost will be spread over the lifetime of the apprenticeship.

FUNDING

100% of training and assessment costs will be covered for small businesses of under 50 employees.

Employers recruiting apprentices aged 16-18 (or 19-24 if an education, health and care plan is in place) receive a £1,000 incentive paid via your training provider.
