What is EDD?

Employee development discussion is a • Discussion between an interviewer and an

employee concerning the employee’s plans for the near and distant future

• Method of sharing career and learning info with employees

• Process for collecting relevant data for the strategic planning of an organization

What value is it? and to whom?

Employee Development Discussions have two main benefits

• Employees begin to think about their careers, their futures, and have knowledge of tools to assist them in their career planning

• Employers learn more about their people to assist the business in times of change

How does it work?

There are several components to the Discussions• Obtaining buy-in from senior management• Designing the tools for the Discussions• Arranging interviews with all employees• Conducting the Discussions• Compiling the results and sharing the relevant

info with management and employees

When can you use it?

Employee Development Discussions can be used• As part of the performance review process • To assist managers in managing the future

workforce• To empower employees to take ownership of

their own future

Learning by doing

Invite everyone to participate in the completion of the employee development questionnaire

• Pick a partner at your table• Choose a role interviewer or interviewee• Complete the questionnaire• Give the completed questionnaire to the

interviewee

Information from the Employee Development Discussions has been incorporated into

• The Public Service Employee Survey action plan

• The Bureau of Pensions Advocates Integrated Human Resources and Business Plans from 2010 to 2016.
