Dear ECC-ites,

The global financial crisis has createdripples in the form of a credit crunch,tightened investment and thereforereduced growth rate of the Indianeconomy. Project financing has startedto slow down because of the creditsqueeze in the market. While somesectors in India have taken a beatingfrom the crisis, there is however muchto look forward in infrastructuredevelopment where there is a lot ofthrust and potential. Infrastructuredevelopment assumes importance at this

juncture and can play a counter-cyclical role in the economic slowdown by creatinginvestment and demand. As L&T’s businesses are closely linked to investments andeconomic growth, a degree of cautious optimism needs to be exercised given theglobal slowdown. Cost optimisation combined with operational efficiency are the keysuccess factors that will help us in wading through the crisis.

The recent Employee Engagement Survey conducted with the help of GallupConsultants saw 6700 employees registering their views, a heartening fact, indicatingthe strengths and areas of concern for the organisation. Amongst the companies thatGallup has surveyed globally, L&T ECC’s scores was found to be on the higher sidewhich is really a positive indicator. On the qualitative aspect, the various strengthsidentified in our Operating Division like “an organisation that is respected by itscustomers; highly quality conscious; experienced and capable leaders who can managefuture business challenges; an organisation enjoying overall satisfaction, loyalty andadvocacy among its employees, which is higher than the India average with healthyemployee engagement levels” – is really inspiring to all of us.

There are some areas of concerns also as one might expect. Managers at all levels needto do more in recognising their people; showing care and concern; and encouragingtheir developments. Performance Management System should distinguish goodperformers and be more transparent (with objective setting and feedback process).Work-Life Balance is also a concern. The findings will help the management to makeaction plan and initiatives to improve engagement levels within the organisation.

For the third time in a row, L&T is the only construction company from India tofeature in Forbes Asia’s ‘Fabulous 50’. L&T has won the prestigious KPMG-Infrastructure Today award for being the most admired infrastructure company inIndia and is ranked first over the last four years as “India’s Most Admired ConstructionCompany” by the Construction World 2008 survey. I wish to compliment all L&T-iteson these achievements. While these acknowledgments are testimony of the globalbenchmarks and standards set by the organisation, it calls for further sustaining theleadership position with initiatives and constant drive to achieve high quality standardsin all our projects.

Achievement of targets set in ‘Lakshya 2010’ by various Business Units propelled bythe favourable market conditions until recently and the backdrop of the challengingconditions posed by the current global financial turmoil, triggers an imminent needto take a fresh look at the futuristic business scenario spread over the next 5-6 yearsin a comprehensive manner. Accordingly the strategic plan process for the period2009-15 has been kick-started last month across all the Operating Companies to makea holistic attempt to evaluate future business strategies and growth plans of the OCs.

Mr. Naik’s name, citing his contribution to Indian industry, andthe role that the Company played in nation building. On receivingthe intimation from the President’s office, Mr. Naik chose toshare the national honour with the employees of the Company,and said:

“Leading a company that is helping to build the nation is amatter of pride in itself. To receive high national recognition forthis service is indeed heartening. It will be my privilege to acceptthe Padma Bhushan on behalf of all the employees of the Companyfor whom the L&T story isalways interwoven with thelarger interests of India.”

Mr. Naik is the secondL&T-ite to be honouredwith this award. L&T’sco-founder, Mr. HenningHolck-Larsen receivedthe Padma Bhushan in2002.

AMN Conferred ‘Gujarat Garima Award’

Mr. A.M. Naik, Chairman &Managing Director, receivedGujarat’s highest state honour –the Gujarat Garima Award (‘Prideof Gujarat’) – presented by theChief Minister of Gujarat,Mr. Narendra Modi. The award –a shawl, a citation and a memento– was presented on January 12,2009, the inaugural day of the‘Vibrant Gujarat’ exhibition heldat Ahmedabad.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Naiksaid this award carried specialemotional value as it came fromhis birthplace, Gujarat. Mr. Naik

said this high recognition to the son of a middle-class teacher and grandsonof a Gold Medalist primary teacher would be a source of encouragement tothe youngsters of today. He quoted from the L&T Anthem which dwells onthe debt that we owe to the land of our birth, and spoke about the keyprojects executed by L&T in Gujarat.

Accepting the award, Mr. Naik said: “Thisis one of the proudest moments for thewhole company, for I believe that the CMDand the company are two sides of the samecoin.”

As we stepped into the New Year and bid adieuto 2008, there was something poignant andspecial for all ECC-ites about the year gone by,two stalwarts – Mr. K.G. Hariharan (KGH) andMr. K.V. Venkataraman (KV) laid down officeafter close to four decades of relentless servicelife.

November 14 and December 12, 2008 werespecial days for L&T-ites at Chennai as they badea fond farewell to KGH and KV. Accoladespoured in from cross section of colleagues acrossdifferent locations. Present on the occasion weresenior executives and colleagues of theirrespective OCs.

KGH began his response to the felicitations bythanking the speakers for the lavish praiseshowered on him and his family. He said “thejourney was long, arduous and eventful, yet Ienjoyed every moment. An ordinary diplomaholder with a civil engineering backgroundbecoming a mechanical engineer and leading oneof the biggest mechanical setup in whole of Indiarather in the world today was impossible. Today,I stand with a sense of satisfaction andachievement which is very high.” Recalling someof his early life mentors, KGH said that it wastheir support and motivation which wasinstrumental for his growth. He advisedyoungsters to learn to do jobs at cost and not atany cost. Speaking on the economic crisis, KGHsaid that one should not lose hope as the

slowdown will not have any majorimpact on us. Concluding his addresshe said the future beckons for thosewho are willing to give the best. Hesaid “Hariharan is not great, Hariharanand Larsen & Toubro is great. We oweeverything in our life to L&T”

KV began his address by saying “L&Thas been a part of my life for the last37 years and saying goodbye is astrange feeling. So much action, eventsand people and suddenly I feel avacuum. But saying adieu is a necessity.”Sharing some of his early insights, KVrecalled his associations with Mr. P.H.Mortensen who was known for his highideals and values and was instrumentalin shaping KV’s early career. Sharinginteresting anecdotes, KV concluded hisaddress by saying that he cherished eachand every moment of his eventfuljourney and the golden memories willalways stay with him for ever. He thanked all L&T-ites and wished the organisation, staff and their families, success,health and prosperity in every step ahead.

As a fitting tribute, Mr. A.M. Naik presented special mementos to KGH and KV at a function organised later as a partof the farewell. Similar functions were organised across regional offices and sites.

The highlights of the HQ functions were the multimedia presentations made by Corporate Communications on KGHand KV along with a video capsule of crisp interviews with some of their long-standing associates.

Continuing the tradition of honouring excellence in QUALITY in our projects, the Quality Trophy for the period2007-08 was presented to the winners on December 30, 2008 at the Convention Centre, ECC-HQ Chennai, inconjunction with the customary New Year address by Mr. K.V. Rangaswami.

As in the earlier years there was enthusiastic participation in the competition. There were 74 entries (overall) fromdomestic as well as overseas projects. There was a 30% increase in participation compared to the previous year.

The entries were assessed on the basis of parameters such as Product Quality, Housekeeping, Customer Satisfaction,Project Schedule, Project Cost Management, Safety and Adherence to the Company’s Quality Management System.Assessment was carried out in three stages: Self-assessment; Regional Quality Management Committee and QualityManagement Committee-HQ. Wherever the scores obtained by project sites were very close, joint winners were declared.

Quality Month at E&GP OCE&GP OC initiated its First Quality MonthCelebration during November 2008. Theobjective was to take the message of quality– “Sustainable Growth through Quality”,through a series of events across locationsat HQ, factories, all clusters and projectsites of TLRE, EI&C & GP sectors.

Mr. K.V. Rangaswami (KVR) along withMr. V.B. Gadgil, Mr. K.U. Warrier, Mr. S.Rajavel and Mr. S. Ganguly inauguratedthe month long event on November 1,2008, at ECC’s Convention Centre, HQ,Chennai. More than 250 staff attended theinaugural session.

Speaking on the occasion, KVR stressed the importance ofQuality and reiterated that awareness is the key for wisdom.He said that this month-long event will focus on educatingand nurturing the work force in achieving QualityConsciousness.

Mr. V.B. Gadgil recalled the first steps initiated by ElectricalDivision of ECC, particularly factories in embracing QualityMovement during the early ’90s. He highlighted theachievements and congratulated all for the remarkable deeds.

Various training programmes and demos were organised

to enhance the awareness and competitions were conductedfor staff and workmen as a part of the month-long activity.A unique e-quiz was organised in the portal for whichthere was an overwhelming response. Factories and sitesorganised several programmes on Job WorkmanshipStandards, Quality Management and SpecificationAwareness. Quality team at HQ organised a trainingprogramme on Quality Management System Requirementsand Concreting.

The celebrations concluded on November 30, 2008, andprizes were distributed to the winners of competitions atvarious locations.

ECC Bags 5 Trophies at the 48th ABCI Annual Awards Competition

ECC’s Corporate Communications Department made L&T proud by winning FIVEprestigious awards at the 48th ABCI (Association of Business Communications ofIndia) Annual Awards ceremony held at Hotel President, Mumbai, on November 7,2008.

ECC won these awards competing against more than 500 entries from almost everymajor PSU, Bank, and Corporate in the country. Other Divisions of L&T also pickedup 4 awards, making it a total of 9. Amidst others, the awards ceremony wasattended by His Excellency, S.C. Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra.

L&T’s first Corporate Sustainability Reportfor 2007-08 was released by Mr. A.M.Naik, Chairman & Managing Director, inMumbai. The document communicatesL&T’s sustainability performance to all itsstakeholders. This will help inbenchmarking the company againstinternational peers.

This is the first corporate sustainabilityreport to be brought out by an engineering& construction company in India. It is amatter of pride for all L&T-ites that thereport secured the highest rating – ‘A+’ –given by the Global Reporting Initiative(GRI), Amsterdam.

Releasing the report, Mr. Naik remarkedthat, like the smiling girl on its cover, wewould like to see smiles on the faces of ourshareholders. “For this we need to put inextra effort to improve performance, reduce cost, and createhigher shareholder value,” he said.

high-density traffic sectors in India (57,064 to 65,203 passenger car units per day). A systematic approach,

understanding the challenges and evaluating traffic control methods have demonstrated that the project though

begun with an initial delay of nearly 10 months is being completed ahead of schedule. The project is a demonstration

of the art of road construction through adaptive traffic management initiatives.

Developed by the National HighwayAuthority of India (NHAI), under theMinistry of Road Transport & Highways(MoRTH), the project is a part of theambitious National Highway Development Programme(NHDP) of Government of India and connects the nationalcapital – Delhi with the financial hub – Mumbai.

Construction of the road has been awarded to L&TVadodara-Bharuch Tollway Limited, a special purposevehicle (SPV) promoted by L&T InfrastructureDevelopment Projects Limited, with a negative grant ofabout Rs. 471 crore. The total construction cost of theproject is around Rs. 750 crore and the construction periodis 30 months. The concession period including constructionperiod is 15 years. The agreement was signed on July 11,2006 and the construction scheduled from January 2007,commenced only from November 2007 due to the nonavailability of the right of way and presence of 33,000trees on the area where construction was to be done.

SAI, Ahmedabad are the Design Consultants, and ArtifectProjects Private Limited are the independent consultantsappointed by NHAI for supervision of project.

For execution and logisticspurpose, the 83.3 kmstretch is divided into four

sections of approximately 20 km each. Construction ofthis highway commences at Km.108/700 and ends atKm.192/000 on NH 8 in the state of Gujarat. The highwaywhile connecting the two cities of Vadodara and Bharuch,passes through many semi-urban centres and intersects anumber of state highways and has immense potential toattract increasing traffic as it serves various industrial estates.Apart from widening of the existing 83.3 km of 4 lanecarriageway to 6 lanes, the scope of work includesrehabilitation of the existing 10 major bridges, 36 minorbridges and 70 culverts. Construction of 11 new flyovers,20 new pedestrian underpasses, 2 railway overbridges, 8cattle crossings, 1 vehicular underpass, and improvementsto 44 minor intersections. In addition, the scope alsoincludes construction of 8m wide service roads, 22 km(11 km on each side) along with 12 bus bays, 38 busshelters, 2 truck bays, 2 rest areas, one toll plaza (an

Mr. Ravi Prakash, (RP), Project

Manager, states that “this sector

under construction is one of the

busiest highways of India with a

density of nearly 55,000 to 65,000

vehicles per day connecting the

national capital – Delhi to the financial

hub – Mumbai. When completed, the

highway has immense potential to attract increasing traffic as it

serves various industrial estates especially thereby developing

the industrial and commercial hubs enroute. For execution and

logistic purpose, the project is divided into four sections of 20

km each. Working amidst the high traffic is perhaps one of the

biggest challenges of the job; the slightest disruption would choke

the flow of vehicles resulting in logistic delays. Adaptive traffic

management methods are implemented all along the sections to

ensure smooth flow of vehicles. We planned the construction

tenure for 24 months against the contractual term of 30 months

through innovative design and work methods. However we lost

10 months due to forest clearing measures and strictly speaking

it is a 14-15 month project being completed ahead of schedule.”

Since 35% of the scope of work is concrete based, RP says, “We

have gone for precast methodology which has enabled the speedy

completion. The major scope comprises 11 flyovers, 3 railway

overbridges, and more than 100 culverts and minor bridges.” RP

highlights sourcing of aggregates as another crucial issue adeptly

handled at site. “In order to meet the enormous quantum of

aggregates (27 lakh tons of aggregates and 13 lakh tons of

granular sub base), we have established three quarry sites with

crushing plants of different capacities with state-of-the-art

crushing technologies. Locating the soil source was a tough task

as we had to interact with the government and the panchayat

boards. Around 95% of the aggregate targets have been achieved.”

With regard to workmen sourcing, RP says, “Working close to

Surat and Baroda meant retaining manpower was a tough task as

sources were many for workers. However due to recession, things

have improved and now we are comfortably placed with a labour

strength of close to 3,000 workmen. For execution, we need a

blend of experience and youth but here it is 25-75 ratio. The

project team comprises 260 staff most of whom are new to

company and road project.” RP highlights that “initially it was

difficult for the new staff to understand L&T’s work systems and

procedures. Our thrust during the early phase was in training the

staff in road work methodologies. These efforts have paid rich

dividends by creating a talent pool of 200 new staff to suit road

project works.”

RP asserts, “We have done well in executing the project ahead

of schedule adhering to the safety and quality norms. The erection

of the last flyover beam is in process and we are poised to

complete the 83.3 km stretch ahead of schedule.”

Mr. K.V. Mahadev (KVM),

Planning Manager, says “Having

paid a negative grant of Rs 471 crore

to NHAI, it is imperative for the Special

Purpose Vehicle – L&T Vadodara-

Bharuch Tollway Limited to get back

the money through tolling as early as

possible.” KVM highlights that the

special features of execution are the value engineering concepts

implemented at various levels of the work front.

Citing some of the innovative techniques, KVM says, “RCC

rectangular side drench for 22.8 km was converted to hume pipe

drain. In either of these cases, the purpose of the drain was to

drain the surface run off. The shift in design saved a lot of time

as the pipes were cast at site well in advance. We have a huge

requirement of lime since the available soil properties are very

poor, which needs to be enhanced to get the required CBR

strength. For this we have opted for lime plants in the project to

have better control on the quality and the supplies. The local

lime resources are unreliable as there was the likelyhood of marble

dust being mixed in the lime and also the supply of such huge

volumes on daily basis was not possible. Considering the

situation, we deployed an agency and installed 2 lime hydration

units in our camp yards and the problem of quality and required

supplies could be mitigated. We are using the technology of

milling the existing pavement crust and reusing the milled

materials in GSB & WMM. For this purpose, two state-of-the-art

pavement milling machines with a capacity to mill 250 to 300

MT per hour have been procured from Germany for the first time

in India by our organisation. Apart from resolving the space

constraint, which otherwise would have been necessitated, this

architectural masterpiece, never seen before in India) andone base camp (Administrative Block).

For early completion, pre-cast is being used extensively.Girders, box segments for culverts, cattle-crossing,pedestrian, underpass, crash barrier with friction slab, crashbarrier over vent, approach slab, deck slab planks, humepipes, box drains, etc. are being pre-cast to reduceconstruction time and improve quality control.

As a part of the contract, L&T will also provide HighwayTraffic Management System (HTMS), which consists ofemergency communication system, mobile communicationsystem, variable message sign system, meteorological datasystem, automatic traffic counter-cum-classifier system,automated tolling system (French technology), CCTVsurveillance system, power supply system to collect/disseminate information about traffic and incidentmanagement and safety of the highway users.


initiative solves environmental issues as the bituminous material

is used effectively thereby avoiding disposal modes. Around 10

lakh MT of milled material has been produced, thereby reducing

the requirement of fresh aggregate to the equal volumes.”

Since most of the concrete work is precast, KVM says, “The

advantages are control on the quality and optimum utilisation of

the labour force, minimising the requirement of formwork

materials, flexible work options and speedy completion.” Deck

slab planks are being precast which were used as false-work on

the girders to receive the deck slab, which has resulted in

eliminating the staging for the superstructure casting, thereby

saving both time and cost.

Though there was an initial delay of 10 months due to tree-

cutting activities, the period was used to mobilise men and

machinery and when the project got going, the resources were

well lined up to facilitate the progress of works. Major Plant &

Machinery availed include 5 hot mix plants, 6 pugmills, 3 batching

plants, 1 hume pipe manufacturing unit, two 100t hydraulic cranes,

36 earth compactors and 21 motor graders. The planning

department comprises of a 9-member team which apart from its

planning scope caters to the site in the drawing detailing and

other technical inputs and interacts with the design consultants.

Mr. E.R.C. Suresh (ERCS), Man-

ager Accounts & Administration,

says, “Complying with the statutory

requirements and securing the appli-

cable permits before the financial clo-

sure was a Herculean task as it involved

coordination with various government

bodies in two different districts and a

number of local bodies like panchayats. We met the collectors

of Baroda and Bharuch and requested to convene a meeting with

the Talati, Sarpanch, Mamlatdar, highlighting the national impor-

tance of the project and the fact that government will spend a

part of the revenue from royalty for the development of the vil-

lages. This helped in creating a positive attitude among local

panchayats and accelerated the processing of land documents

and issue of NOCs.”

ERCS highlights obtaining lease of 52 hectares government land

in 3 quarry locations, 50 borrow area locations (32 lakh cu.m.)

and 100 acres of land on lease at different locations for project

establishments and stock yard as some of the major achievements.

The lands are basically agricultural lands which had to be

converted into non-agricultural land before installation of plants.

All the processing and documentation work was achieved well

within the scheduled time.

Almost 80% of the Accounts & Administration staff are new to

L&T and come from different industries. Training modules were

developed for their orientation and most of them now are in a

position to handle independent projects. Since the project has

seven sub-stores and one main store, collection of indents, feeding

the data in SMS system and forwarding them to Regional Office

as per schedule is a major task being done efficiently. As road

projects are machinery oriented, RTO formalities were huge and

moreover in this project the pre-casting activities were used

extensively. Girders and box segments for culverts were shifted

to different locations and handling them enroute was a critical

activity amidst the traffic.

With regard to staff and workmen welfare measures, ERCS says,

“We have established 25 labour colonies at different locations

accommodating close to 3000 workmen in good quality living

environment.” By strategically placing these colonies all along

the highway and nearby villages, the traveling time of the

workforce was reduced and they were more productive. Medical

facilities for these workmen were also identified nearby to the

colonies. Good furnished accommodation for around 260 staff

was arranged in Vadodara, Bharuch and Rajpipla. 18 staff messes

have been provided at different locations. ERCS says, “In my

previous assignments, I found it difficult to source 2 to 3 cooks

but how we have managed to get 18 cooks is still a surprise for

me!”

As a part of corporate social responsibilities, the site is actively

involved in many social initiatives. Activities such as medical

camps and health awareness campaigns are being conducted for

the villagers at regular internals, and study material and note

books have been distributed to the school children at our quarry

locations. ERCS asserts that good relationship with the locals,

various departments have been instrumental in the smooth

progress of the job.

Mr. K. Chinnasamy (KC), Sector

In-charge for section 4 comprising

of 22 km stretch highlights that

structural scope includes 2 flyovers,

one major and 10 minor bridges, 9

culverts, 3 slab culvert, 20 hume pipe

culvert. Being the largest section of the

project, the quantum of works comprise

3.2 lakh cu.m. of embankment, 4.8 lakh cu.m. of sub-grade, 1.67

lakh cu.m. of GSB, 1.57 lakh cu.m. of WMM 86000 cu.m. of

DBM, 29000 cu.m. of BC. KC says “Working without disturbing

the flow of traffic and ensuring complete safety is perhaps the

most challenging part of this project. By taking up one side of

the road, we diverted the vehicles through the other side in stages

and completed the road in phases. For the first time in L&T, we

have used the milling machine for dismantling the existing road

and reused the material for the new road. Identifying and sourcing

of borough areas was a tough task and it required extensive field

visits and assessment drives from our end. In addition we had to

negotiate with government and village officials for securing the

areas on a lease basis. We are well within the

scheduled targets.”


Mr. Niloy Mukherjee (NM),

Construction Manager, Structure

(Section I & II), at site since July 2006

says, “I am associated with this project

from the initial phase and was looking

after the overall design. Starting from

zero level design to drawing preparation,

negotiation with our design consultant

were early challenges. Having streamlined the design part of the

project, I was asked to take up the responsibility of execution

from 2007. The total value of this section is around Rs 50 crore

and the major scope comprises 7 flyovers, 16 culverts, 6 minor

bridges 10 major bridges.” Among the challenges and highlights,

NM says, “Two hydraulic rigs with 25m depth capacity were

mobilised at the rate of 3 piles per day and we completed the

piling in 3 months time. Most of the structural concreting is

done through pre-cast thereby optimising manpower and speedy

completion. The culverts were completed in 7 to 8 days when

compared to the cast-in-situ method which would normally take

a month’s time.” NM believes that, with almost 90% of the works

completed, his section would be ready by January 15, 2009.

Mr. K. Prasanna Kumar (KPK),

Manager, Mines, says,

“Considering the enormous quantity

of aggregates (27 lakh tons of

aggregates and 13 lakh tons of

granular sub base) we have gone for

4 state-of-the-art crusher plants in

three quarries and have so far achieved

26 lakh tons of aggregate and 12 lakh tons of granular sub base.

For the new equipment, adept training in operations and

maintenance was given to staff and workmen. The quarries have

been located at strategic points along the project to facilitate

feeding for different sections. For the first time in ECC we have

gone for a river bed quarry in Savli which proved to be effective.

It was a challenging initiative as we had to take care against the

water inflow during the monsoon and the probability of flooding.

However through the support of the project management and the

quarry team we were able to maximize the outputs. We are

planning to complete our crushing operations by December 2008

and start dismantling of the plant by early January 2009.This is

the first time in my career that I am achieving such huge quantities

in a single project. For not even a single day we have suffered

for want of aggregates and even today we have a stock of 10 to

12 lakh tons.”

Mr. Satendra Kumar, Assistant

Construction Manager, Asphalt

In-charge, says,“the scope of work

spans 166 km and the value is close

to Rs. 236 crore. 5 hot mix plants are

deployed to achieve a daily target of

10,000 MT. Work being round the clock activity; a team of 20

operators is engaged on shift basis. The equipment is state-of-

the-art plants and run full steam on a daily basis for 17-18

hours.

We have completed 2.36 lakh cum against the overall target of

4.6 lakh cum. Four teams have been formed for paving activities

and do the job in stretches. Since most of the equipment is new,

there is minimum wear and tear and targets are meticulously

achieved as per the schedule.”

Mr. R. Srinivas, Manager QA/QC,

played a crucial role from the initial

phase of the project in establishing

quarry locations and standardising

systems and procedures. RS highlights

“Beginning from January 2006, we

finalised the quarries in three months

time and started production in October 2006. We have never

faced aggregate shortage at any point of time. Location of borough

area was another issue requiring detailed survey and investigation.

Since the soil was not having required CBR strength, we had to

go in for lime stabilisation. It was only in December 2007, works

started in full swing. As most of the staff are new to L&T, a lot

of training was imparted periodically on work standards and

procedures to follow. Four laborites are established at different

sections. The project has successfully faced an external audit

and credited with a nil non conformity report. Meticulous

implementation of the quality plan, inspection test and confirming

to the guidelines are the key attributes in ensuring high quality

standards at work front.”

Mr. P.G. Aravinda Ghosh (PGAG),

Plant Manager, says “Being the largest

road project ECC has done till date,

assets worth around 110 crores were

mobilised to complete the project well

in time.” The major equipments included

5 Hot Mix Plants, 6 Pavers, 5 Bomag Soil Stabilisers, 2 Milling

Machines, 4 Batching Plants and 2 Boom Placers. Wirtgen W2000

Milling Machines, a first of its kind technology in India are used

to remove the existing paving and the milled material is reused

in WMM and GSB. 3 Lime Production Plants, 13 Lime Spreaders,

5 Soil Stabilisers are being used to improve the quality of sub

grade. Workshops are established at all four sections with

independent teams for operation, maintenance and repair. Strict

adherence to maintenance practices helps us in avoiding major

breakdowns of important machines. As skilled manpower is a

crisis, we have trained few CSTI trainees as operators, mechanics

and electricians. This has given rich dividends as they have

quickly developed as good operators and mechanics. A strong

P&M crew of about 40 staff and 350 workers provide the backup

and the lifeline for the round the clock operation.”


For Anil Kumar Sachan (AKS), Asst. Construction Manager in Section-I,

joining L&T was always a dream right from his college days. A dual degreeholder in Arts and Diploma in Civil Engineer in Architectural and Civil

Planning, AKS joined the organisation on temporary basis at the Raniganj– Barakar Road project. His good work at site was backed up with an

interview call and he successfully joined the

organisation in 2001.

AKS’s first posting was at the Rajkot–Jamnagar Road

Project. The project gave him a lot of confidenceand success as he straightaway executed a 20 km

stretch. AKS’s highlights, “The confidence reposedby the project manager proved worthy when the

project was completed two months ahead ofschedule.” Following this, AKS’s next assignment

was at the Jaipur-Kishangargh Road Project. Hestates “this job was different as I had to tackle the

pressures in executing the urban area stretch. Wecompleted the stretch six months ahead of schedule

without any grievances and the project managerassigned another 10 km to me.”

AKS is married to Ragini who is a Post Graduate in

Social Science and the couple has one daughter –Khushi Sachan, seven years old, studying in the 1st

standard. Having all along been a road project man,his wife has supported him in all his endeavours

through the 14 years of his career in project sites.Mr. Anil Kumar is a socially conscious person and

helps meet the educational expenses of poor studentsin his hometown.

S. Anand Rao (SAR), Assistant Accounts Officer, belongs to the youngbrigade of accountants in ECC. A 2001 graduate, SAR had successful

stints outside ECC before joining the organisation in February 2008. Wellversed with all the accounting processes and procedures, SAR is adisciplined member of the accounts team at project site. His earlier

associations were with Geetha Enterprises, RGR Private Limited, RamkiInfrastructure, and PWD Jalandhar.

Vadodara-Bharuch Road Project is his first assignment in ECC. Though

new to the organisation, SAR has been exposed to the various accountingprogrammes and is adept in handling systems such as CeMa, IAS, SMS

etc. In addition, SAR is entrusted with the scope of reviewing billing ofsub-contract, P&M, staff attendance report, RO bills, bank guarantees of

contractors, performance guarantee Subcontractor ledger reconciliation,etc. SAR highlights that working on priority basis and adhering to the

targets ensure that the multiple tasks are handled efficiently. With theright gamut of exposure and scope, SAR nurtures hopes of handling

independent assignments in the near future.

Anand Rao is married to Shanthi, a housewife and the couple has a twoyear old son Nitin. SAR is pursuing his M.Com through correspondence.

B. Pradeep (BP), Construction Manager, Planning, hails from the

Alleppey District in Kerala. A 1998 graduate in civil engineering,BP joined L&T as graduate engineer trainee. His first posting was

at ESSAR, Jamnagar followed by subsequent assignments atAhmedabad Regional office, IPL Dahej, Jamnagar–Loni Pipeline,

Rajkot-Jamnagar road, and Jaipur-Kishangarh road.

Initially working as execution engineer, BP was initiated into

Planning at the Kandla Project. It was at the Rajkot-Jamnagar roadjob that he was totally involved as planning engineer and got

adequate training in CeMa, EIP, IAS systems. Pradeep says, “I gotthe maximum fulfilment at Rajkot-Jamnagar project where there

was a scope for lot of learning. Most important is logistic planningand identify material sources.”

BP firmly believes that technology rules the execution front.Adapting new and innovative techniques is the need-of-the-hour

for any type of construction activity. He cites the use of millingmachines at this project whereby time and cost are greatly reduced.

Married to Kavitha in 2004, a non-practising lawyer, Carnatic music

practitioner and classical dancer, the couple has a 8 month oldboy – Abinav. Pradeep is an avid reader and dwells into a multitude

of subjects, does computer programming and keeps himself abreastof the latest updation in technology through internet.

D. Suresh Baba (DSB), Senior Engineer (Mechanical), all along his careerhas been perfecting the art and science of quarrying stones. A 1997 Diploma

in Mechanical Engineering, DSB made his professional debut with IVR asjunior engineer in Quarry and Crusher Department which was subsequently

followed with a 4 year stint with ECI of Hyderabad.

Leaving No Stone Unturned DSB joined L&T in April 2006 and the Vadodara-Bharuch Road Project is his first assignment. In-

charge of 4 crushers and a screening plant wortharound Rs. 12 crores, DSB plays a crucial role in

ensuring that the huge aggregate demands of theproject are meticulously met.

He states, “From an initial production of 60000 t

per month, the output was increased to 75000 twith continuous focus and balancing of the mining

and crushing activities. Safe work environment,adherence to the systems and procedures and good

team work ensures quality output.”

For DSB, joining L&T was come a dream cometrue. He highlights that freedom with responsibility

is the hallmark of L&T’s work culture. Suresh ismarried to Sruthi, a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering

working with NIIT. DSB is a sports enthusiast andkeenly follows happenings in volleyball and chess,

indulging in a game or two. In love with stones,DSB aspires to take up further challenges and break

new grounds with cutting edge technology.

New Age Technocrat


Parag Mithaiwala (PM) hails from a family of civil engineers and nurturedhopes of becoming one right from his childhood. Even during school days,

PM would wonder and query on construction and would make visits tonearby sites. It was this urge which enabled him to go for a Degree in CivilEngineering.

A 2004 graduate from Maharashtra University,PM had his first feel of a project site when he

joined Ranjit Buildcon Limited. His first postingwas a challenging assignment involving the

execution of four flyovers at Surat.

PM says, “The joy in executing an infrastructureproject is beyond all bounds as it touches and

enhances the quality of people’s lives.”Following this, PM joined Reliance Industries

and was involved in the execution of effluenttreatment plant project for ESSAR at Surat.

Vadodara-Bharuch Road Project is his firstassignment in ECC. PM highlights completion

of minor bridges and culverts as one of hismajor achievements in this project. Having

achieved the milestone, he is now involved inthe rehabilitation works of 10 major bridges.

Parag shares a passion for knowing about innovations

in the construction technology. PM is married toNehal, who is also a civil engineer and a share market

exponent.

Surya Rao (SR), Assistant Construction Manager at Section –IV,is a 1998 B.Tech from Bapatla Engineering College. SR joined

ECC in August 2006 with an experience close to 8 years. Hisearlier associations prior to joining ECC were a mix of diverse

projects. SR always felt that though being a jack of all trades,specialisation was still a skill to acquire. It was this quest which

attracted him to ECC.

Vadodara-Bharuch Road Project is his first assignment. SR’s first

task was a unique situation, to organise cutting of 14500 trees.Unlike the normal cut and dispose mode, the trees had to be

classified, tagged and stacked for forest officials to audit beforeauction. It was a crucial task as any error during the cutting and

stacking process would result in immediate freezing on furtherland clearance activities. With around 850 labourers, and a well

knit team, SR successfully completed the activity as per theschedule. This initiative paved way for the construction activity.

With almost 60% of the works completed, SR is confident offinishing his scope by March 2009.

Creative in nature, SR always tries to do things in an economic

way and improve upon situations. SR feels at home in L&T andsays, “Senior colleagues and my team are giving me constant

support and it is a wonderful work environment.”

A Passionate Civil Engineer

Quest for Specialisation


Mailraj S. Ramaiah (MSR) is a confident young man who handles

the main stores activities. A 2005 graduate commercial trainee,MSR’s first assignment was Mora-Vapi pipeline job for a year

and a half and subsequently he was posted at Vadodara-Bharuchroad project. He asserts, “It was on the job training and I learned

a lot on store activities and systems.” Posted at this project forthe past two years, MSR’s scope of work includes monitoring

the data feeding in SMS system, issuance of materials, stockreconciliation, preparation of management information

reports, etc.

MSR highlights that coordination and getting the indents ontime from the sub stores to the main store was initially a big

challenge. A systematic approach with regular follow ups ensuredstreamlining of the indent posting. He says, “Proper training of

subordinates in systems and procedures is essential to meet thevarious demands of stores operations.”

Inspite of having a tight schedule, MSR manages his time

efficiently and has plans to do his MBA. He asserts thatunderstanding and grasping things in a short period of time are

his strengths. Mailraj is inspired by reading biographies of greatleaders and he tries to imbibe the high values. An eligible

K.R. Tripathy, Senior Engineer (Civil) in Section – IIIis a seasoned campaigner when it comes to road

projects. In a career spanning close to 13 years, KRThas been associated for most part with road projects

across the country both as an executor and consultant.KRT asserts, “I learnt a lot during this phase and

developed a keen insight into both planning andexecution.”

A college topper in civil engineering, KRT joined ECC

in January 2008. Vadodara-Bharuch road project ishis first assignment. KRT’s scope along the 10 km

stretch includes embankment, sub grade, RE Wall,etc. Having worked in both fronts – execution /

consultant, KRT asserts,“Execution though being atough activity has vast scope for learning and

improvement.”

Though new to ECC, KRT is familiar with the systemsand procedures and credits L&T’s emphasis on human

resources training as a key element for skillsacquisition and standardisation.

Tripathy is married to Anju, a housewife and the couple has asix year old son – Satwik studying in the first standard. KRT

nurtures hopes of taking up challenging projects, work with

upfront technology and be known as a road projects specialist.Watching movies and listening to old melodies are his favourite

The customary New Year get-together of ECC was held atHQ, Chennai on December 30, 2008. The event started witha welcome address by Mr. J. Ganguly (JG), Executive VicePresident, followed by the presentation of the Quality RollingTrophies to the winners from different OCs/Sectors.

Mr. K.V. Rangaswami (KVR), Member of the Board &President (Construction), commenced his address with hisNew Year wishes to L&T-ites and their families andcongratulated the winners of the Quality Trophy. KVRcommended the immense contributions made by KGH andKV in building the organisation and added that “biddingfarewell to these stalwarts was perhaps the most poignantmovement for ECC-ites in this year”. Speaking on theperformance targets for the year ahead, KVR said good orderinflows in the early part of the year have resulted in placingthe division in a better position to meet the guidelines for theyear. However, he expressed 2010 would be a tough year butwas hopeful that with the hard workand cooperative nature of L&T-ites, wehave the right spirit to tide over thechallenges posed by the current scenario.

Highlighting the numerous awards wonand the achievement made by thecompany in the current year, he saidthat Mr. A.M. Naik being conferred withIndia’s Business Leader of the YearAward by Economic Times is a matter ofpride for all L&T-ites as it is anacknowledgement to the most admiredand respected business leaders of ourtimes. Globally the company has movedup in its rankings to 40th in the Engineering News Record2008 survey, made it to the Forbes Asia’s Fabulous 50 listingfor the third consecutive year, bagged the prestigiousConstruction World (fourth consecutive year) and ‘KPMGInfrastructure Today’ awards. Stressing on the importance ofsafety, he said ECC has done well for the current year andachieved many a milestone. CTS Chennai was awarded theBritish Safety Council award for achieving 8 million safe man-hours; NTPC 3x600 MW BARC Super Thermal Power Projectclocked 6 million safe man-hours; RoSPA Silver awards forL&T’s Bait Al Barakah Villa No. 1 Project in Muscat andMicrosoft Project, Hyderabad for achieving 7 million and 20million safe man-hours respectively. While congratulating thesafety department and the site staff, he said there is muchmore to be done to meet international standards. He addedthat the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai had added newdimensions to the safety and security of our staff.

KVR said that institutionalisation of Operating Companies isauguring well in the division which would enable smoothtransition towards evolving as separate legal entities as and

when they achieve critical mass. Speaking on HR Challenges,he said the recent employee engagement survey by Gallup sawclose to 7000 employees participating, indicating the strengthsand areas of concern for the organisation. Various strengthsidentified in our Operating Division like “an organisation thatis respected by its customers; highly quality conscious;experienced and capable leaders who can manage futurebusiness challenges; an organisation enjoying overallsatisfaction, loyalty and advocacy among its employees, withhealthy employee engagement levels” – is really inspiring toall of us. There are some areas of concerns also as one mightexpect. Managers at all levels need to do more in recognisingtheir people; showing care and concern; and encouraging theirdevelopments. Performance Management System shoulddistinguish good performers and be more transparent (withobjective setting and feedback process). Work-Life Balance isalso a concern. The findings will help the management tomake action plan and initiatives to improve engagement levels

within the organization. KVR sharedinformation about the various initiativesthat were taken in the OD, likeformation of HR coordination councilto bring in synergy among the OCs,introduction of moderation groups foreffective fair process, leadership trainingprogrammes to develop and nurturenew leaders and managers etc. Heemphasised that it is a matter of pridefor all L&T-ites for being India’s firstEngineering & Construction companyto bring out the CorporateSustainability Report in compliance

with global report initiative third generation. He said thatmost of the BUs have achieved their LAKSHYA targets witha year to spare and announced the kick start of the strategicplan process for “LAKSHYA 2015” in each of the OCs. KVRthanked all those involved in the RMC business demerger forthe smooth handling of the entire process.

Speaking on the performance of B&F OC, KVR said that thepride of last year was the successful completion of Bangaloreand Hyderabad International Airports. He said that the Delhiand Mumbai airports were going well and cited Godrej ITParks, NESCO IT & Convention Centre, TSC Phase II assome of the major orders bagged during the year. KVR saidthat the OC has done very well to increase the design andbuild jobs as they comprise 65% of B&F’s business andcomplimented EDRC for enhancing the skills. Hecongratulated EDRC for registering 14 design copyrights.KVR augured that the OC is likely to do well for the financialyear 2008-09 and the performance meeting the MTRexpectations, with the order book touching Rs. 17000 crorewith an inflow of Rs. 10,000 crore and a sales of Rs. 4750crore.

KVR Calls for Unified Responsetowards Economic Crisis


Highlighting the Infrastructure OC, KVR said the majoraccomplishments for the year include the completion of Asia’slargest runway for Delhi International Airport, Krishnagiri-Thopurghat Road, Panipat Elevated Corridor, and VeligondaDam. He said that infrastructure sector occupies a pride ofplace and inspite of the global meltdown it will do well asinfrastructure development is a continuous process. The majororders have been the Rs. 650 crore Chennai-Tada Road, Rs.3050 crore road jobs from GSDRC, Rs. 850 crore MumbaiMonorail project, and Rs. 400 crore lift irrigation projects.While speaking on the nuclear sector, KVR said that there ishealthy scope as the recently concluded Indo-US Nuclear dealwould bring in a lot of business. The OC is rightly placed tomeet the MTR expectations of an order backlog of Rs. 10,500crore, inflow of Rs. 8000 crore and sales of around Rs.3750crore for FY 2008-09 and has bright prospects in both thedomestic and international front especially in the Gulf region.

Speaking on the Metallurgical,Material Handling & Water OC,KVR urged the entire team to dowell and keep up the tempo andvarious initiatives nurtured by KGH.Highlighting some of the majormilestones, he said thecommissioning of India’s largest blastfurnace “H” for TISCO in a recordtime of 25 months, manufacturingand supplying of three 1400 litrebucket wheel excavator for Neyvelli,completion of Ramnad Water Supply Scheme three monthsahead of schedule were proud moments for all L&T-ites. Hemade special mention of the fact that L&T is the only companyin India to concurrently execute six blast furnaces and sinterplants. KVR said that the OC is well placed to achieve theMTR commitments by clocking an order book of Rs. 13,500crore and an inflow of Rs. 10,000 crore, and sales of Rs.4400crore by the end of FY 2008-09.

With regard to the Electrical & Gulf Projects OC, KVR saidthat being the largest operating company with domestic andinternational operations, the OC is buoyant in its performance.Since electrical projects constitute a major portion of itsbusiness, in the near future they will have their own OC.KVR mentioned some of the major jobs completed for theyear which included power distribution system at KAFCOKuwait, AGL Packages for Delhi International Airport, 400kV Jindal and Raipur Substations. Speaking on the orderinflow, he said the major inflows included the first powerdistribution package for a steel plant, maiden breakthroughorder for execution of 765 kV Substation, largest transmissionline order from JSW Energy, repeat orders from Power Grid.He made special mention of the fact that the installed capacityof transmission line factories at Pondicherry and Pithampurwill be touching 1 lakh t per annum. To enhance workmenskills, training schools have been set up in Chennai, Kolkataand Delhi. On the international front, the OC has done well

to bag orders to the tune of Rs. 1000 crore and has strategictie ups with Galfar and Jacobs for Muscat International Airport.He stressed that “we are extending our airport developmentsuperiority to Oman and going about in a focused manner forairport projects”. KVR cited that “we have been prequalifiedwith RTA Dubai for bridges and road works and airport relatedworks in Abu Dhabi.” The OC is well poised to meet itsMTR commitments of order book of Rs. 9100 crore, aninflow of Rs. 8800 crore and sales of Rs. 5100 crore for FY2008-09.

He complimented the various service departments on theircontinued efforts and contribution to the growth of theDivision. With regard to the outlook for the next year, KVRsaid cost optimisation, agility in our operations and staffproductivity are the key factors to sustain our leadership inthe industry and also to mitigate challenges posed by theeconomic downturn. He stressed that tracking all cost

parameters and ensuring asavings of 5% in all ouroperations should be ourobjective. While austeritymeasures are one part of theprocess, KVR highlighted thatlooking at the opportunitiesevolving out of the slow downis another approach – leveragingon the positives like fallingcommodity pricing / softeninginflation, etc. He said the war

room concept has been drawn at the organisation level and isapplied to all OCs for maximising the advantages and effectivelyplug the loose ends and get a unified response to the situation.He concluded by saying, “We will come out strongly,understand our weakness and analyse where our energies needto be focused and channelised.”

Mr. V.B. Gadgil (VBG), SeniorVice President & Head –Electrical & Gulf Projects OC,began his address by saying thatit is the right time forintrospection and reaffirmed ourconviction to see through thecrisis. He recalled our founderMr. Henning Holck-Larsen’swords: “If we cannot do it who

else can do it” and said that with the spirit of L&T-ites wewill achieve the targets and do well to see through the year.Quoting the dictum, “When things get tough, the tough getgoing”, VBG said L&T as a leader will take on thechallenge. He said that though the concept of OCs has comeinto operation for the last six months, as an organisation weare united in our stand and we will grow. He stressedthe importance of austerity measures, improvingproductivity, operation efficiency and reviewing the quality oforders.

Mr. D.R. Ray (DRR)Executive Vice President &Head - Metallurgical,Material Handling & WaterOC, said that the year gonewas a year of operationalexcellence with landmarkachievements in the steel,bulk material and water

business units. He stressed that the current scenariodemands proactive measures in terms of choosing the rightclients, strategic initiatives, cost optimisation and effectiveproductivity to keep our heads high. DRR said the yearsaw the superannuation of Mr. K.G. Hariharan and thehanding over of the baton to carry the business. He assured:“We will put in our best efforts and carry the good workdone by KGH to greater heights.”

Mr. N. Baskara Raju (NBR),Executive Vice President &Head - Infrastructure Oper-ating Company, said thatensuring cost effectivenessand growth are the twobiggest challenges at themoment. He stressed thatcost is going to drive our

businesses and one should constantly review cost for growth.Optimal utilisation of our capabilities and resources isperhaps the need of the hour. NBR said that the OCs needto focus on people and business development and take thelead in implementing various strategic initiatives. Hestressed that despite the slowdown, infrastructure develop-ment is happening and is vital for every country. NBRemphasised the need for organisational efficiency, strategic

interaction among the OCs and development and suste-nance of talent as the key parameters for growth. He ad-vocated to develop the “Can Do” spirit and said “togetherwe can achieve”.

Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan(SNS), Executive VicePresident & Head - Buildings& Factories OC, said that heis positive about the goodperformance of the OC forthe coming year. AsBuildings & Factoriesconstitute the essentials of

society, he said that the scope would always be there. Withthe performance likely to be close to the budgeted figures,SNS stated that despite the challenges there is a lot ofpotential for growth. Speaking on the milestone projects– BIAL and HIAL, SNS said it was a great combinationof B&F, R&R and electrical project BUs which paved theway for the successful completion. Stressing on themagnitude of the airport jobs, he said the DIAL projectdeployed a workforce of 70,000 labourers and 5000 staffat the peak level of operations. SNS called it a mixed yearand said that the housing sector was the one which wasbadly affected. However, with a good order backlog andprospective ones in the pipeline and with the backing of amature team he was positive about taking the OC to furtherheights.

Mr. K.P. Raghavan, Executive Vice President, concludedthe proceedings. He congratulated the winners of the qualitytrophies. He said the year was a challenging one and thankedthe OC heads for the spirit in which they have reaffirmedtheir commitment to take up the challenge.

of Tamil Nadu 2008” for its unique state-of-the-art

superstructure, expanded polystyrene blocks embedded in

pre-stressed concrete floor slabs to reduce dead weight

and the use of bottom-up concreting in the construction

of the large sized fin walls.

Technology Centre III is under construction and when

completed would be another example of innovative and

pioneering technology in construction, one more starship

in the ECC firmament of landmark buildings.

Volleyball Makes its Debut in ECC

The first ever Volleyball Tournament in ECC was organised during July-November 2008 at the ECC-HQ Campus.Twenty teams, consisting 10 players in each team, vied for the coveted trophy. The 1st semi final was played between“Gilly Team” & “Easy Goers” on November 7, 2008, and the 2nd semi final was between “Spike Force “ & “HRDazzlers” on November 10, 2008. “Spike Force” and “Easy Goers” managed to reach the final. The final was playedwith great vigour and it was not an easy go for “Spike Force” which finally emerged as winners of the tournament.

L&T-ites Add Fervour to the Hyderabad Run

A team of 20 staff from Hitec II project,Madhapur, Hyderabad, successfully participatedin the Hyderabad 10 km run held on November30, 2008. The L&T team was led byMr. N. Chandrasekaran (NC), Manager (Accts &Admin). The participants included DETs, GETs,Project In-charge Mr. P. Dhananjay and manyyouth from the project sites.

NC is a regular morning walker for more than12 years and a keen participant in marathons.NC advocates that walking is the easiest way fora healthy life and can fit in with any lifestyle.This year NC wanted to motivate the youth andensure their participation.

More than 20,000 people from a cross sectionof age groups participated in the run. High-spirited L&T-ites woke up at 4 a.m. foregoingtheir Sunday morning sleep, overcame theinclement weather and were available at startingpoint by 5.45 a.m. Clad in red T-shirts and carrying a banner displaying the L&T logo, the L&T-ites added fervour tothe run.

The Hyderabad 10 K Run Foundation is a ‘Not for Profit’ organisation registered under the Indian Trusts Act (An Actof Indian Parliament) with an objective of promoting Health, Fitness and Sports.


A Tour to EgyptQuite a few might wonder, what is so great about Egypt? Why this dreamof visiting Egypt one day? Of all the places on earth, why Egypt? To allthese questions my answer would be – “Even I ask myself the samequestion!”

I am perplexed. When did this urge of visiting Egypt take roots in me?!Could it be from my past life? Or could it be from the time I studiedabout the pyramids and mummies in my history lessons even when I wasin my second grade? Honestly, I do not remember how long this yearninghas been there in my subconscious mind. But even in the wildest ofimagination, I did not expect that it would come true one day in this lifeitself and that too without a least bit of my efforts! So you can imaginemy excitement when I set foot on Egyptian soil for the first time!

It all started like this. Some time during mid September of 2008, whenI was casually talking to my friend (Husband’s colleague’s wife) overphone, she told me that this year, a pleasure trip to Egypt was beingplanned by the recreation club, Chennai chapter of L&T, ECC, inDecember. This was the time for the employees to de-stress along withtheir families after months of hard work! It would also provideopportunities for various families to interact with each other and knowone other. On the whole it would be fun!

The D-day arrived! My elder son flew from Singapore on the 19th Decemberat 10.45 pm. Our flight to Egypt by Qatar Airways was scheduled for4.45 am of December 20th. So he stayed back at the airport while I joinedhim at half past midnight.

A Dream Come True!


Day 1 – Evening Arrival at Cairo

Day 2 – Trip to Alexandria - Catacomb, Pompeii’spillar, and Quaitbay Fort, King’s Palace and back atCairo for dance & dinner

Day 3 – Cairo - Pyramid and Sphinx, visit to a Perfumefactory, Egyptian Museum. Son et Lumier – Sound andLight Show at the Pyramid.

Day 4 – The Alabaster Mosque, papyrus shop, theKhalili Bazar; Boarded ‘the Sleeping Train’ in theevening – North to South.

Day 5 – Arrival at Aswan; Visited ‘the UnfinishedObelisk’, the Upper & Lower Aswan Dam, boardedthe ‘Lady Diana’ Star Cruise by lunch-time. Went toPhilae Temple and then Sailed off from South to North.Visited Kom Ombo in the evening.

Highlights of the trip

Day 6 – Arrival at dawn at Edfu. Visted the Edfutemple. Crossed the Esna Lock by lunch-time. Arrivedat Luxor the evening and visited the Luxor temple.Evening show: Belly Dancer’s performance at theCruise.

Day 7 – The daredevil group went up the hot airballoon while the very responsible ones took the Bus!The entire team visited the ‘Valley of the Kings’. Visitto an Alabaster factory. Valley of the Queens and thefunerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Lunch at theCruise. Trip to Karnak temple and a typical village ona ‘Buggy Ride’.

Day 8 – Departure from Luxor

Day 9 – Day break – Arrival at Chennai.

One by one the rest of the group joined in. There were 39of us! A few amongst us were very close friends and thatmade our journey memorable and pleasant. Aftercompletion of immigration formalities etc., our boardingcall came and we were inside the aircraft for a flight to myfantasy Land – the land of the pyramids! The land of theworld’s ancient civilisations! The land of the Pharaohs andMummies! The land of the world’s longest river! It wasunbelievable! I pinched myself to see if it was true!

After a flight time of about fourteen hours, which includeda six-hour transit halt at Doha, we landed in Cairo at

about 4.05 local time. Our local tour operator was waitingfor us in an air-conditioned bus! His warmth did make usfeel warm (as the weather was cold and chilly outside) andwe got into the bus even as our baggage was being takencare of by our menfolk.

The Cairo roads were quite good, broad and clean. Inmany ways they reminded me of Mumbai and Delhi Roads.The tall buildings on either side of the roads resembledour Indian buildings in their architectural style. They wereinterspersed with modern as well as old buildings. The oldbuildings were somewhat similar to the ones seen in Kolkata


Bhishoi (that was his name) will remain too, for he juststole our hearts with his typical (Egyptian) Englishpronunciations and his “Shuthup!” (shut up) which becamethe teasing words for our group youngsters till we landedback in India! The way some of the girls used to imitatehim, even he enjoyed! “INNNNDIYAA……”! That ishow he addressed us in unison!

Three days out of the six days stay were spent in Cairo. Wewere put up in a four star hotel, ‘The Oasis’. The roomswere spread out on the lawns more like our hill stationcottages amidst picturesque gardens and fountains. Onlythey were not cottages but rooms like in any other hotelwith attached baths.

After visiting important historic places in Alexandria andCairo, we left by train for Aswan to board the Nile cruise.For the rest of the days till we boarded the flight back toIndia, we were in the cruise ship on the Nile enjoyingevery moment of our trip, what with Christmas celebrationson board with dance, music and fun all the way besidesvisiting historic places all along the banks of the river Nile.

Last but not least, it would be incomplete and unfair toforget mentioning about the organisers of this tour. Thesmallest of our comforts was taken care of by them. Theplanning and coordination had been excellent through outthe tour. Hats off to the team for the wonderful work!

On the whole, we had the luxury of all types of transportstarting with the plane, by luxury bus, a camel ride, bydeluxe train, the star cruise, the humble horse cart-ride,the hot air balloon trip, et al! Added to that, the camaraderieand friendship that prevailed through the young and oldalike, there was no ‘generation gap’! What else could weask for? This is certainly going to be our most memorabletrip for many more years to come!

Pssst… Plots have been hatched to work on a similaroverseas outing in 2009 as well! This is a secret!!

There were state transport buses whichagain reminded me of our own Chennai with peoplehanging on the foot board! Then there were private omnibuses and plenty of cars. The cars were badly in need ofa wash either because the owners didn’t care much or thedesert sands made maintenance impossible. To give thepeople of Cairo the benefit of doubt, I prefer to believe thesecond reason!

Somewhere, the bus came to an abrupthalt. In came a man who was cleanshaven and had a tonsured head! Hisphysical appearance seemed a little scaryin the beginning (having read aboutbombing of the American Embassy inCairo a few years back and then theMumbai incident still fresh in mymemory) but as soon as he wasintroduced to us as our Egyptologist(local term for guide) who would beescorting us to all the places in Egypt,I was relieved! But to be fair to him forall my unnecessary fears and suspicions,he was a wonderful man with a beautifulenchanting smile. As long as Egyptremains in my memory, this man, Mr.


The 30th Accountants’ Conference of ECCDwas held at Hotel Radisson Chennai onNovember 21-22, 2008. The proceedingscommenced with a welcome address byMr. B. Ramakrishnan (BR) – Head FA&A.In his address, BR touched upon theperformance of the Division, key deliverablesof F&A and their role under the OCstructure and also listed the majoraccomplishments of the Division whichinclude completion of RMC businesstransfer.

Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, Member of the Boardand President (Construction), in hisinaugural address appreciated the good workbeing done by F&A fraternity and especiallythe successful completion of RMC businesstransfer. He highlighted L&T’s strong fundamentals suchas good corporate governance, audit, internal controls, etc.He touched upon the present global meltdown andemphasised that “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”.He was confident that L&T will be able to manage thepresent situation successfully and continue its growth.

30th Accountants’ Conference

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Y.M. Deosthalee(YMD), Chief Financial Officer, through video conferencefrom LTH Mumbai. He advised that “this is the time notfor talking but for acting” and he shared his concernsabout the present global economic crisis and its impact onIndia and our company and also the role of F&A in thecurrent environment.

Mr. T.N. Manoharan, Past President of ICAI made apresentation on “Global Financial Crisis – Impact on India”.He narrated how the crisis evolved starting from housingloan defaults to collapse of major banks in U.S. He touchedupon the present liquidity crunch and its impact on theinfrastructure growth of the country.

In addition to the above, internal speakers madepresentations on various current topics. The BR RollingTrophy for best presented accounts for 07-08 was awardedto Hyderabad Region. BR presented the award toMr. Ranjan Sengupta, Regional Accounts Manager,Hyderabad. The Team Award was presented to Task ForceTeam on RMC Demerger headed by Mr. S. Sunmugum.

Singing Aces of ECC Shine at ‘Paadum Office’

ECC-ites made their presence felt in the CorporateMusical Reality Show “Paadum Office 2008” heldduring November 2008 organised by Star Vijay TVChannel. While Mr. Annasamy emerged as the runnerup in the classical solo category, Ms. AnithaRavichandran and Mr. Ashish Chatterjee reached quarterfinals in the popular solo category. For music lovers ofECC, HQ, this success is a result of the investment madein nurturing and bringing forth singing talents of ECC-itesthrough the year-long sing-along Karaoke contest – thebrainchild of ECC Recreation Club. Out of 30 memberswho took part in the screening session, 15 members wereselected. The following members took part in various categories like Popular Song – Solo (Male/Female), Duet& Team and Classical Solo (Male/Female) - M/s. Ashis Chatterjee, V. Mr. J.J. Shrikhande (JJS), CountryHead, L&T – China, has been elected asthe Chairman of India Business Forum(IBF) – China. The Indian Ambassadorto China and Indian Consulate Generalin Shanghai are the patron and the co-patron respectively for the IBF.

Some of the main objectives of the IBF, China, is to interactwith senior representatives of both the Governments inorder to enhance trade and investment relations, identify

Women and Well Being

ECC Recreation Club, HQ, Chennai organised a “Heath & WellBeing” talk for the exclusive benefit of women employees onOctober 14, 2008. Renowned Obstetrics and Gynaecologists –Dr. Kamala Selvaraj and Dr. Priya Selvaraj shared the session andhighlighted the importance of health and well being for womenand clarified many queries raised by employees. Over 200 womenemployees attended the session and benefitted from the talk.Dr. Kamala Selvaraj commissioned the First Test Tube Baby ofSouth India in 1990 and since then has had many achievementsincluding several firsts in assisted reproduction. Dr. Priya Selvarajcommissioned the first frozen oocyte baby of India in 2008.

Mr. A. Mohan Fernando (AMF) Deputy General Manager, Talent Acquisition & Development,MMH&W OC, has been elected and inducted into the Board of Directors of Madras YMCA forthe term 2009-11. This elevation is a further achievement upon his earlier one where he was theChairman of YMCA Royapettah branch for the year 2007.

Founded more than 150 years ago, the YMCA is recognised internationally as one of the pioneering organisationsrendering yeoman service to the community. The YMCA Madras was founded in 1890 and has several branches,community centres and homes for destitute boys. As an part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, L&T has beenactively involved in many initiatives and AMF’s role augurs well for extending and supporting the CSR activities.

The first Buildings & FactoriesOperating Company HR Meet washeld on 21st October 2008 at Chennai.The HR meet was inaugurated by Mr.K.V. Rangaswami, Member of the

Board & President (Construction) in thepresence of Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan,Vice President & Head Buildings &Factories Operating Company.

Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan in hisopening remarks emphasised on needto increase the staff productivity at alllevels and also to take a closer look atthe distribution of work as well asauthority and responsibilities to ensureequitable distribution of work andbetter utilisation of talent.

KVR in his keynote address briefedthe logic for OC formation andemphasised on the abundant scope forcareer growth of staff members due

to OC formation. Apart from sharinghis thoughts with regard to Recruit-ment, Performance Management andTraining; KVR also emphasised tostay in touch with sites, especiallyremote areas, interact with people,understand their needs, and makethem comfortable.

Mr. N. Dharmarajan, Head-HR, B&FOC, while setting the contextemphasised the importance of thetheme of the HR meet –“Operational Excellence for B&F OC– Role of HR”. Vessels Project Site, Visakhapatnam, organised 4 blooddonation camps on occasion of Safety Monthcelebrations during January 2006 (273 Units), 2007(307 Units), 2008 (375 Units) and Henning Holck-Larsen Centenary Celebrations (July 2007, 675 Units)in association with Indian Red Cross Society,Visakhapatnam Branch. A total of 1620 blood unitswere collected from these camps, setting a new recordeach time.

Responding to the Bihar Flood crisis, Ahmedabad Region geared up to the occasion and collected a pile of used clothesfrom the staff of ABRO. Just when they were being packed to be sent to Patna, a communication from the managementconfirmed that the Bihar Govt banned receipt of used clothes. The collected clothes were therefore quickly distributedat Techno Park Labour Colony, Vadodara. A feeling of guilt at not being able to help the people of Bihar in their timeof crisis spurred the ABRO Management to issue a circular to all Ahmedabad Regional staff to contribute their mitein money or kind. The response was spontaneous and unprecedented. Soon emails with commitments from different

sites started pouring in.

On October 6, 2008, a truckcontaining about 8 MT ofRelief Material was flaggedoff to Patna about 200 kmsaway. An escort too was sentalong with the truck.Mr. R. Shukla, Const-ruction Manager based atPatna handed over thematerials to the Red Crossfor distribution to the needy.

NPCIL Kudankulam Project Site washonoured with a shield and certificate byKanyakumari Medical College Hospital’sBlood Bank, for organising a blood donationcamp and donating maximum units of blood(167 units) in Kanyakumari district for thecalendar year 2007 on the occasion of“National Voluntary Blood Donation Day”celebration function held on December 31,2008.

Ahmedabad, is a city which has a rich heritage and culture.However, one aspect stood apart – cleanliness. Times of India(ToI) took up the issue and gave a lot coverage in theirnewspaper. They challenged people to come to the streetsand set an example for initiating cleanliness drives. L&T, Ahmedabad (area office employees) accepted the challenge andon December 7, 2008, fifty L&T-ites (with their family members) wielded the brooms and swept a part of the city clean.The local Panchayat President was thrilled and grateful for the cleanliness initiative. This was appreciated by the localitesand the media as well. Other groups which took part in this initiative were Nirma University, Kerala Samajam,Gujarat Commerce College, etc. At the end of the day, all participants expressed satisfaction at having done their mitefor society.

A Mother And Child welfare Camp was held on November 8, 2008, atthe Prayas Medical Centre, Virugambakkam. The camp was held

between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm. Around 180 patientsregistered for the camp and about 138 children

between the ages of 3 months to10 years turnedup for screening by Dr. Jayakumar Reddy, Dr.Manjula Nair, and Dr. Lakshmi Shankarnarayanan.Necessary advice regarding health and hygiene was

given to the mothers by PRAYASvolunteers.

prescribed bydoctors. Pack-

Prayas members of Bangalore celebrated Children’sDay at Seva Sadan, Malleshwaram on November16, 2008. Interesting competitions were conductedfor girls of various age groups. Childrenparticipated enthusiastically and made the daymemorable. Collage competition for elder girlswas conducted, the theme given to them being

“Our India”. The collages made by themwere excellent and judging them was verychallenging.

The competitions were followed by a shortbut colourful cultural event presented bythe girls of Seva Sadan. It was extremelyentertaining to see the programme. Afterthe hi-tea, prizes for various winners weredistributed. Return gifts were presentedto all the girls.
