A California state cross country champion at both the high school (Santa Rosa HS) and junior college (SRJC) levels, Cox left a group of more than a dozen men flailing in her wake en route to a 4:48.9 mile clocking, 9 seconds ahead of her nearest pursuer. Cox' time is second only to her former high school teammate, Julia Stamps (4:46.5 in 1995), on the Summer Series All- Time Performance List for women. Cox' performance overshadowed a remarkable distance double by 14-year-old Jacque Taylor of Petaluma, herself on the verge of creating the next chapter of Sonoma Country running history for phenomenal females. Trina Cox Makes History at Summer Track Series Opener

For the first time in the 21-year history of the Empire Runners Summer Track Series a woman has bested all the men in an event. Okay, so it's not just any woman, it's the reigning NCAA Division II national 3000-meter steeplechase champion Trina Cox of Abiline Christian University. A California state cross country champion at both the high school (Santa Rosa HS) and junior college (SRJC) levels, Cox left a group of more than a dozen men flailing in her wake en route to a 4:48.9 mile clocking, 9 seconds ahead of her nearest pursuer. Cox' time is second only to her former high school teammate, Julia Stamps (4:46.5 in 1995), on the Summer Series All-Time Performance List for women.

Cox' performance overshadowed a remarkable distance double by 14-year-old Jacque Taylor of Petaluma, herself on the verge of creating the next chapter of Sonoma Country running history for phenomenal females. Taylor first zipped through the mile in 5:14.6, narrowly

missing a spot on the women's Top Ten list for the series. She could not be denied in the 3000 meters, however, moving to #2 all-time for women with a 10:22.8. Only the legendary Cathy DuBay (10:13.7 in 1996) stands above her for that distance.

Fire-up the Barbee, Strap on the Bikini and

by Val SellSchool is out and the excitement of newly-

found freedom is in the air. Vacations and parties have been planned and the calender is filling up. We have a lot planned for the next few months so be prepared to pencil us in for good ole fashioned fun in the sun. We just missed the running of the Dipsea which seems to mark the beginning of the season. There was great representation from the group this year. Hats off to you all who conquered the many challenges on the course (see story within)! Next weekend, for those who didn't get enough the first time around, is the Double Dipsea. Dale Peterson, Daryl Beardall and I will make the attempt although I think I must have lost my mind. Hopefully for us the herd of Empire Runners trampled though last weekend and cleared away any excess brush to ensure our safe journey. Oh well I just keep reminding myself that I choose to do this...this is fun!!?!* On July 1st, if I haven't careened to my death the previous weekend Dave and I (my husband) are hosting an open house for all Empire Runners who don't have anything better to do but hang out eat and drink beer (must be 21 to drink beer). We'll just call it carbo loading for the Kenwood Footrace on the 4th. In typical fashion bring something to throw on the grill and something to share. We will supply everything else (O.K.George, you can bring a bottle of wine if you must). Party starts at 2pm till and goes till ? or when the Hutch and Larry Meredith finish the beer. Call for directions if you need. Don't forget the Summer Track Series, which has already started. Bring the whole family. Its fun to watch and cheer the little ones dash the 100 and 200. Where else can you have and evening of fun for only 3 bucks? (2 for the kiddies!) Of course no summer would be complete

without joining us for the Sugarloaf Relays and camp-out on July 8th. The course is quite challenging, though short, however all negative race memories are soon forgotten once you get a taste of Mojo's grilled veggies. (Oh, yeah, there’s meat, too!) Later in the month I am also hosting the annual Cross Country info. meeting and potluck. Same deal as above except BYOB. The date is July, 29th. 5 p.m. at my house. You need to be registered with PAUST&F and have a USATF# before you can sign up for any races . Go to the link at PAUSATF.org to join. This way you will be all ready for our debut race on August 26th, The Phil Widener Empire Open at Spring Lake on a new course. Please attend this meeting even if you are unsure about running these events. The season is what you make of it. Weather it be social or competitive, we don't care, most of the fun is having a large group supporting each other (and the sandwiches at Tag's Deli aren't bad either).

Run happy!

Empire Runners Win Bronze at

The Tahoe RelayKenny Brown’s Version: For years I have heard about this race and occasionally have been driving around Lake Tahoe as the race was in progress. I have always wanted to run it. At 7 a.m. I lined up with 84 other runners for the start of the 42nd Tahoe Relays. As the gun sounded, Gary Blanco (running for a Chico Team) and I took to the front as we rounded the first turn. Four spectators taking photos almost got run over as they misjudged where we were going. After a half mile I pulled ahead to take the lead.

About a mile or two later, I realized my legs and lungs were working with less oxygen than normal and I was passed by two runners, one of them being Gary. The first leg was relatively flat, but ended with two 200-foot climbs. On the first hill the leader was having stomach problems and was forced to pull off to the side. He started back up right in front of me but had lost his momentum and soon fell back. By the time we started up the second climb I was 30 seconds back from Gary and solidly in second place. Knowing that I had another leg to run I decided not to press the pace and relaxed going into the exchange zone. My time for leg 1, which was 9.6 miles, was 55:52. Three hours later I was doing some strides waiting to start leg 5, as Joe Tonna would be handing off to me. Alec Isabeau let me know he was in view. After jogging to the exchange zone, one of the officials stated, "The wait is over, you will finally be running." My response was, "This is my second leg. I also ran leg 1." She said, "Why would you do something like that?" At that moment Joe handed off to me and it is probably a good thing I didn’t have time to think of a response.

This leg was 10.6 miles, starting with a 200-foot climb then a downhill and rolling flat for the last 3 miles. I kept waiting for the downhill. At mile 8, Kathy Brown and Ty Strange were cheering me on by the roadside while Joe Tonna and Gregg Jennings were cooling off in the lake. 2 miles left and I started to tie-up. The nice thing about relays is knowing others are counting on you can push you to faster times. I felt like I was running backwards but just kept telling myself to push it. Finally looking down the long stretch I saw the

exchange zone and tried to put as much distance between

Joe Tonna chugs along the shore of Lake Tahoe during the 4th -- and longest at 12.3 miles -- leg of The Tahoe Relay.

Alec Isabeau requested an uphill leg and lived to regret it. Kenny Brown watches the suffering.

myself and 4th place as possible. My time for leg 5 was 1:05:30. Even though the road conditions are not great I would still do this race again.

Greg Jennings’ Version:What started out as a "hey, let’s do…"

became reality last on June 10th. Six Empire Runners drove for 3.5 hrs to do 7 legs of a relay that would take them around Lake Tahoe. No, there are no typo’s. I said six runners for 7 legs.

I won’t bother you trying to describe the profiles of each leg. (If you REALLY care, each leg is profiled on w w w . l a k e t a h o e r e l a y . c o m , but I STRONGLY suggest you get the oxygen ready BEFORE you look at the second leg.) But I will say that they were all above sea level!!!!!

Brief recap…first leg (9.6 miles)-Kenny Brown . It was actually funny watching Kenny having to hold back. Kenny led for most of the leg, however, as they neared the end, another Empire Runner (but running for Chico) gapped Kenny. Kenny did the right thing, knowing he had another leg and just let him go.

Second Leg (only 8.5 miles, s h o r t e s t l e g ) … A l e c "Doc/Superman" Isabeau. You really should look at the elevation of this leg on the website. To quote Puddles, "Doc will bleed for us," and he did….from his lungs, eyes, ears ,nose…..Fabulous leg…OUCHThird Leg (the first looong leg, 10.3 miles)….Gregg Jennings . What goes up must come down. Well, that was my leg, unfortunately. The downhill stopped halfway through, and I had to convince my legs that it was okay to run flat or even uphill. They were a bit pissed and told me about it in various ways. Due to some road construction, I also got the only cross-country portion of the loop. Again…..OUCH.

Fourth Leg (the longest leg, 12.3 miles)… Joe "2:58" Tonna. If you are ever retelling this story for

some strange reason, and Joe is around, DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE .3 at the end!!! Remember how I told you Kenny led for most of his first leg, but got caught at the end? Well, I forgot to mention that Doc got passed by one person and I got passed by two people, dropping us to 6th. Well, Joe ate them alive. He gobbled up the roadkill and put us back into 3rd. Now he is off to Dr. School.

Fifth Leg (10.5 miles)…. Kenny Brown….again!!!! AMAZING!!!! Two legs. He is a newlywed, he might have been showing off!!!!!

Sixth Leg (10.5 miles)…. Puddles. Probably the hottest leg of the day. Monster two-mile hill at the end with no shade. As he hit the crest he was breathing so hard (Did I say breathing? I meant wheezing!) I couldn’t hear what Tonna was saying about the Impala girls. I found out later. Probably don’t need to print it though.

Seventh Leg (10.5 miles)…..Ty Strange . Mentally tough leg. After Puddles runs the monster hill for his last two miles, Ty has to run back down,

Eric “Danger” Downing vacuums up stray oxygen molecules in the rarefied air around Lake Tahoe.

Page 5: Empire Runners Newsletter · Brief recap…first leg (9.6 miles)-Kenny Brown. It was actually funny watching Kenny having to hold back. Kenny led for most of the leg, however, as

however, the whole time he is running down, he sees the hill he will have to run back up. Did a great job. Even ran through a Renaissance Fair. As the final runner, he got to cross the finish line and take up all the glory -- and the girls in bikinis. This REALLY upset Joe.

Overall we got third, just under 8 hours, which is 15-20 minutes faster than we predicted. It took two college teams to beat us. Ooops!!! I just realized I said "brief recap" at the start. Well, I tried to be brief, but it was soooooo much fun. We are going back next year. (We were thinking of getting a seventh runner too!!! Kenny will like that.) And shooting for the 7 hour mark!!! Dipsea, shmipsea. This thing HURTS, but you hurt for a team. Start working on your teams and GET IN SHAPE (did I mention it hurts?).

Ty Strange’s Version:Miscellaneous Ramblings at 7000ft

Pure grit and determination. That's what I saw coming towards me cresting the final 100 yards of a near 2-mile climb rising over 550 feet in the oxygen-deprived air at Bliss Park perched high above Emerald Bay on the west shore. My leg, the anchor leg, was all that remained on this near perfect day that had witnessed 6 Lake Tahoe Relay virgins come together for the first time as a team.

The 2 o'clock hour fast approached and a sub 8-hour journey seemed well within reach as did as a 3rd-place finish. Er ic "Puddles" D o w n i n g put

anything and everything into his 10.5-mile 6th leg, preserving a comfortable 5-and-a-half-minute lead over the rival Aggies team when we exchanged the kinetic energy put into motion so many hours earlier.

Kenny "2-Legger" Brown staked us to a second place, lead-off leg finish, a mere 30 seconds back of fellow Empire Cross Country harrier, Gary Blanco, running renegade for the annual Lake Tahoe Relay favorites, Team Chico. Doc "Bubba" Isabeau, a last-minute replacement for the meniscus hobbled Eric Bohn, took the shortest leg of the day, a mere 8.2 miles out of Zephyr cove heading east. In a road relay common wisdom dictates that if it's short it's not going to be sweet. Unless by "sweet" you mean sweet "suffering." Kenny can back me up here when I say I heard sounds emanating from Doc that one doesn't normally hear while he passed us and headed into the next transition. And, mind you he was competing against the din of Highway 50 traffic coming in from Carson City.

By the time Greg "2 Burgers in One Day"

Jennings descended past Spooner Lake along the mostly downhill stretch of the east shore we all could tell that this was more than just a fun race. It was a RACE. We'd become very possessive of our current position. Greg quickly learned that what goes down and then flattens out is as equally tough as running a hilly leg. At his water support stop half way through the 3rd leg he flashed us a smile and waved off his bottle during the descent. His smile was more grimace-like when he passed the virtual torch to Joe 5 miles later, however. Greg's final insult was the detour around some major construction that skirted along Annadel-like, single track trails just before the transition.

Joe "Official Impalas Team Stalker" T o n n a took on the longest leg of the day, a picturesque 12.3 miles that stretched the entire north shore. As our support car caught up with him loping along the pristine lake shore drive of Incline Village we couldn't help but think that the number three spot we'd relinquished during the previous leg would soon be ours again. A few minutes later as we sped up ahead to position ourselves for cheering support we passed a runner sporting Sahara Desert style headgear flopping in the cool lake breeze. Greg, still disgruntled at being passed by a runner listening to an IPOD during his leg, eyed the runner from the backseat and flatly stated, "That's guy's dead." Joe left him for roadkill not long after.

Kenny, didn't he run already? Yes, but when you work at Fleet Feet and take a Saturday off to go to Tahoe you'd better be running. A lot. Or, perhaps he's still basking in the glow of being a newlywed. Either way, Kenny ran leg 5 faster than most the other leg 5-ers. Of course, if not for some quick thinking on the part of the other support car, Kenny may have run west through Tahoe City and ended up at Squaw Valley rather than making the left hand turn to head south towards Homewood. Not to be outdone by fellow Fleet Feeter, Joe, Kenny added to our lead over the Aggies by a couple more minutes.

So, finally, after 6 legs lapsing nearly 7 hours that wound the circuitous, perimeter of Lake Tahoe in counter clockwise fashion, I left knowing the trials of miles and miles of trials run behind me. Emerald Bay, undoubtedly the most beautiful section of Lake

Tahoe, awaited my arrival. A quick but controlled 2 mile descent landed me at the base entrance to the western most portion of the bay where bouldering, hiking, and looking for parking spots are the norm and not people running against traffic on a painted white line of the shoulder as if it were a tight rope. The only safety net afforded is an unforgiving, speeding steel grill. The next mile rises sharply. I gear down and climb deceptively effortlessly. I take one last glance at the bay to my left before cresting the overlook that peaks out at just over 6800 feet when I feel the pull of gravity. I literally spiral down 1 1/2 miles of switched backed road, curves banked slightly to maintain my momentum.

With nothing but downhill for the next 7 miles I released the brakes and let'er drift. I would pay the price 6 miles in but for now it was all I could do to stop grinning. This is what I live for! The terraced landscape of the road afforded some nice views of the upcoming paved stretches below. With them I could hear the siren like cheers of the team parked somewhere out of sight. Greg, I think, commented later after the relay was complete how early in the day our cheers were enthusiastic yet somewhat controlled. But, once people finished their legs the "whoop" factor increased dramatically for subsequent legs. That was certainly true for mine. Soon enough my legs started feeling like rubber. 3 years of ironman triathlon training have robbed me of the speed endurance I'm accustomed to. I slow, simply focusing on turn over and recovering some before the final push to the finish. Besides, I can’t remember the last time someone caught me on a downhill.

Like Greg's leg the flats after so much downhill don't necessarily feel flat. But, wait, a welcome distraction presents itself as I lug through Camp Richardson where the annual Ren Faire was in full swing. Last-minute race announcements emailed out days before the event warned leg 7 runners to "watch carefully for large men drinking beer and carrying swords." I spoke with Nike and they said they'd get back to me about a protective jousting singlet. Well, fortunately I didn't see any drunk, sword-wielding medieval types but I did see a couple fair maidens with bountiful bustieas. Ah, but I

digress. Focus. Besides, Joe has beer waiting at the finish.

The ever widening road hints at the approach into South Lake Tahoe. I can see the cross traffic of Highway 50 as my pace quickens to bring it home. The team, staggered out 50 or so yards from the finish line, arms waving to bring in my tired but re-energized legs. A quick left turn into the back driveway of the Miller's Outpost to cross the line where it all began. So very sweet!

who has been competing in the series since his Casa Grande High School days, kept a strangle-hold on his event with a come-from-behind victory over young Gavin Yates , 18. Stranzl's 51.8 tied the 9th-best mark ever for men in the 400 and Yates just missed the Top Ten list with his 52.0.

It was another banner day for youth as 30 boys and girls under the age of 13 took part in the

meet. Perhaps the most impressive show was put on by 7-year-old Michael Curry who finished every event in the meet!

Winners in the women's divisions included former Sonoma Valley High School star Sarah Jakel, 29, in the 800 and Carol DuBay in the 400. Men's winners were Mike Wortman , 20, in the mile and 14-year-old Rory McLeod, running a swift 9:53 to take the 3000. David Dinh, 16, of Santa Rosa HS, won the men's 200 and recent state track meet competitor Brian Cole, 17, of St. Helena HS dismantled the field in the 800 with an nice 2:01.6.

Victorious at Fitch Mountain Footrace

Every year the race directors get a little nervous about the weather for this race. If hot, the steep, early climb and the succeeding rolling hills can really beat up a runner’s legs. Luckily this year the weather was threatening rain or drizzle and the temperature set itself up for a perfect race day. The spectators and race volunteers may differ, but as a runner this was the best weather one could hope for. The attendance of the race was also the largest since the Healdsburg Kiwanis Club took it over. There were 55 more finishers in this year’s race than last year -- 2 more in the 3K and 53 more ran in the 10K.

This year’s Fitch Mountain Footrace 3K run was a Montgomery High School sweep with Blake McDowell winning the overall title for the men and Celeste Berg for the women. Blake blazed the mountain with a 9:24 finish time, winning by almost a minute over last year’s Fitch Mountain champ, Don Nauman (10:23).

For the third year in-a-row, Dan Schafer (4th place) led the Empire runners men with a time of 10:34, placing 1st for the 50 -54 age group. Three other club members took spots in the top 10: Scott Ames took first place in the 45- 49 age group with a 6th-place finish, Mike Zanetti took 3rd place in the 13-18 age group with a 9th-place finish and his father, Brad Zanetti, finished in the10th spot and 2nd in the 50-54 age group.

The Empire Runners men consistently dominate the more experienced divisions in the 3K

race. Two club members nabbed the top two spots for the 60-64 division with Dan Preston (11th) taking the first spot and Gil Moreno (14th) easily taking second. Don Sampson took the second in the 55-59 division with a time of 13:40 and Roger Anawalt, continues to win the 80+ division. The 86-year-old finished in 86th overall!

It was an Empire sweep in the 70-74 division with Ralph Harms winning in 13:54 (20th overall), Carl Jackson (2nd place, 22nd overall) and race director Jerry Strong (3rd place, 32nd overall).

The Van Riper family swept their divisions as well. Jillian Van Riper won the 9-and-under division in 15:17, taking 4th overall among females in her race. She was also the youngest female finisher and finished in front of her brother, Ian Van Riper, who was the youngest finisher of the day in winning the 9-and-under division for boys. His mother, Kathy Van Riper, finished first in the 35-39 division and cinched the 10th place spot in the race.

Montgomery High School sophomore-to-be, Celeste Berg , came in first place in the overall standings for the women’s 3K race with a time of

12:22, winner her 13-18 division. Celeste's HS teammate, Lauren Zanetti , soon to be a senior, took second place in the 13-18 division and 5th overall. Her twin sister, Michelle Zanetti , took the 9th overall spot with a time of 17:11 and placed 4th in the 13-18 division. Bev Zanetti came in 3rd place in the 50-54 division and 18th overall to complete the family theme of the day.

Other Empire women age group winners included Leslie Howell (55-59, 22nd overall), and Pam Horton (60-64, 30th overall). Pam accidentally took a wrong turn while running the race and could have placed better in the overall standings if she

didn’t run longer than the rest of the field. Laura Furlong placed 2nd in the 55-59 division and finished 28th place overall.

The women's 10K race was won by Montgomery HS alumni Megan Johnson , 21 with a time of 41:50. Other Empire Runners that placed in the top ten were Debbie Beem (4th overall, first in the 45-49 division) with a huge improvement in her time, taking seven minutes off last year’s time. Looks like all those half-marathons have really paid off. Liz Sinna (2nd in 40-44) repeated her 6th place overall status and took one minute off her last year’s mark as well. Shelli Gordon (8th overall) and Alyce Parks (10th place overall) placed 2nd and 3rd in the 45-49 division.

The winner of the men’s 10K race, 2005 Healdsburg HS grad Timothy Quiroga, blew the competition away with the time of 35:13, beating last year’s winner, Rich Anderson, by 1:15.

Steve Cleal never fails to amaze us with his running performances. His finish time this year was exactly one minute faster than last year, earning 3rd place in the overall standings for the 10K which was one place higher than last year and placing first place in the 45-49 division. Guy Schott placed 3rd in 40-44 division and 6th overall. Terry Goetzel also placed in the top ten and first in the 50-54 division.

Other Empire finishers include Sam Strabino, Santa Rosa High sophomore-to-be with a 2nd in the 13-18 division and 33rd overall. Cameron Tully-Smith (2nd in 19-29 division, 35th overall), Paul Hadley (3rd in 30-34 divison, 17th overall), Paul Berg (3rd in 50-54, 28th overall) and Gordon Wistrom , who placed first in the 60-64 division and 40th overall.

The event was one of the best ever in terms of race-day organization, with Tori Meredith rallying an exceptional group of volunteers in registration, finish line and results duties. Many of these same volunteers competed in the race as well. The group included Dale Peterson, Debbie Beem, Ann Marie Von Hoene, Lisa Vaccaro (a.k.a. Lisa Gay), Dan Preston, Theresa Wistrom, Paul Berg, George Urdzik, Pam Horton, Susan Kelleher, Shelli Gordon, Gil Moreno, Steve Cleal and family, Larry Meredith, Scott Ames and Jillian

96th Annual Dipsea

Twenty-two (at least) Empire Runners, including three black shirt winners (top 35) finished the 96th Annual Dipsea Race on June 11. A few were willing and able to talk about it.

Terry McNeillThis spring I had the usual excuses for not running the 96th Dipsea, and planned to do more hiking, canoeing and tennis. That is, until Martin Jones rode up in his intrepid motorcycle, and asked "got your Dipsea app in yet?" When I equivocated, he responded "you can't do that, it's a tradition, you simply have to do battle with the course in whatever condition you are in". And then he stuck out his hand, saying that we had an agreement, and I was hooked again. I never could resist Martin's blandishments. So I was the caboose of the Empire team June 11, walking the steep Cardiac hill, watching the wrenching falls and hearing the sad cries of pain, but going hard down the Swoop and through the shortcuts, yelling "Thirsty Boys, on the left". A lot of people passed me, but the finish was as ever a joy. Stinson is an inviting beach, worth of the ordeal, as is the food spread annually provided by Tamalpa & nbsp; I was again honored to be part of the Dipsea tradition.

Dipsea 2006Empire Runners Reveal the Horrors

Marc Strozyk: When I moved out here from the Philadelphia area last August, at the top of my list of things to do, was run in the Dipsea Race. I have known about the race since 1987 due to a fictional movie loosely based on it starring Bruce Dern but became more intrigued after a vacation to Muir Woods in 2000.

To live out here now and to have actually run in the Dipsea gives me a great sense of accomplishment. I feel like a winner for just having run in it and I'm sure most other veteran runners feel the same way. While I'm not happy with my actual time of 1:18:52 and that I didn't qualify for the invitational, I plan on continuing to practice, learn the shortcuts and do better next year. I hope this is a race I run well into old age.

Brian Purcell: I sit here in Durban South Africa two days after the race with sore legs and the fear of a 56 mile Comrades Marathon in three days. A week before Dipsea I fell on my tail bone from our hammock due to a broken rope. I was in pain all week and had the goal of making the top 35 at the race.

It was either the two Advil or the race excitement but I could run on race day and knew I had a shirt when cresting the mountain in 30th place. Now just a few more black shirts to catch Darryl. The most exciting part of the Dipsea experience this year was having Rita finish without any breathing problems and a smile on her face. I look forward to cross country with the Senior team.

Leslie Curry: It's the Tuesday evening after Dipsea and my legs still hurt so bad that when I need to pee I can only hope to land my bottom on the seat. I walked around the lake today and it hurt when my 16 pound dog pulled at the leash and made me walk faster. My goal tomorrow is to run... somewhere. I ran my slowest Dipsea time Sunday, but I am not really unhappy with it. I did what I

Jennifer Vucinich, seen here competing in the 2005 Resolution Run, was the winner of the women’s 3K at this year’s Human Race in May. Jennifer will be a freshman at Montgomery HS.

could with what training I had. Although I spent a good deal of time power-

walking up hills like Cardiac, I made a fairly respectable out of control run down Suicide, the Swoop and the like. I took the stairs two at a time both up and down. I took a fall on the stairs while passing "on your left" and reached up to save the guy I tripped while I was rolling down sideways.

The race is awesome, it is addictive and one of the few races that makes getting older look encouraging. And Darryl, if you are reading this, I saw your time and I want to do some training with you on that course!

John Anderson: It couldn't have been better weather for the race. It wasn't my fastest run, but after two horrible years I'll take it. All sorts of people run the Dipsea. Not all of them are fast. The thing that sets them apart is that they are all serious. The Dipsea is a race that demands respect. I never thought I would have time to run the race. Now, as long as I can run, I will run the race. Like they say, it gets into your blood

Jerry Lyman: Many runners shy away from entering the Dipsea because of its intimidating reputation: a leg-burning staircase to Hell (certainly not Heaven!), cardiac-arresting summits, suicidal p l u m m e t s , i m p e n e t r a b l e b a r r i e r s o f bramble/nettle/poison oak, heat stroke, bloody abrasions, dislocated and/or broken limbs, and a nasty collection of cut-throat competitors knocking each other off ridiculously narrow trails with relish and delight.

Rubbish! Hogwash! Lies! The real Dipsea goes like this: You’re sipping a latté in the sublime plaza of the exclusive Marin County enclave of Mill Valley, chatting with the most agreeable sort of beautifully pleasant people, your group is paged, a whistle toots, and you jog to the beach.

So why the frightening mythology? Perhaps they’re trying to scare people off. One part of the Dipsea’s reputation is undoubtedly true. If you’re not already part of the "in" crowd, it’s difficult to break into the realm of the privileged. You can fill out your entry form the moment it arrives in the

mail, speed to Mill Valley and hand deliver it to the Post Office--and still not get in. The system favors those with a Marin address, who likely receive their forms in the mail before you do. If yours is not in the first 300 entry applications delivered to the post office, you take your chances with a lottery—and you know about lotteries. Better luck being struck by lightning.

Do not, however, lament. In a befittingly Marinite fashion, the rules allow an option: you can buy your way in. How much? Ever hear the phrase, "If you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it."?

Once accepted into the in-crowd, if you run reasonably well, the next year’s a snap. The in-crowd wants you back and sends you an invitation. Disloyalty, however, is not tolerated. Skip a year, you lose your status and have to start the whole sniveling process all over again.

This year’s Dipsea went well for me. I sucked going up but made up for it going down and finished 13th—my best finish ever. I had only one scrape, a rather large one that has made sitting a problem for several days now. I made a tactical error and failed to shove a young lady out of my way on the trail after Cardiac. Losing my footing as I tried to go around her, I skidded on my backside to a screeching halt. I jumped up right away, however, and shortly thereafter took care of her.

For full Dipsea results , go to www.dipsea.org.

First 450 places in invitational section qualify for invitational status in 2007. Those starting in the RS* placing in first 750 also qualify for invitational status in 2007.

In Praise Of The Running Buddy

by Mike Weddington

Hello, old friends, acquaintances, and absolute strangers. As a past club president and assistant newsletter editor, I humbly return to the hallowed pages of the Empire Runner Newsletter after quite the extended absence (much too long for me, perhaps not nearly long enough for some of you, I imagine). Workin' for a living, paying the bills, and helping to support a family have managed to do what drooping eyelids, a cacophony of un-stifled yawns and indelicate hand signals utterly failed to do during my interminable presidential addresses... shut me up. Although dutifully acquiescing to the demands of domesticity with a large measure of contentment, I find myself flat out missing the trivial banter, inimitable camraderie and spirited competition our regular workouts and gatherings provided, which brings me to the topic at hand: The Running Buddy. There are perhaps a minority of us who are truly lone wolves...folks who lose more than they gain by suffering in the company of fellow runners. But the vast majority of runners I know (count me in) agree how much easier it is to grind up and over Annadel back to the Spring Lake parking lot without cohorts to whine and grind with, for example. To share the daily news, aches and pains, personal issues, tall racing and training tales, and even just silent and empathetic witnessing as the lactic acid builds up.

It’s funny, isn’t it? Some of the running buddies we have had may not actually be friends at all outside of running, outside of our training routes. We may or may not in fact know much of their personal life details. We may not even know how they make a living. And yet after several long and occasionally gut-wrenching runs together, you may learn essential truths about your running buddy that very few other human beings know –the occasional philosophical insight on life or a casual remark about daily affairs that can only be safely uttered in a

Empire Runners Newsletter, July 2006 www.empirerunners.org Page 12

stress-free environment amongst the grassy dales and woody vales afforded by a tranquil outdoor setting. And you see how each other holds up under occasional oxygen debt, which can reveal more about character than words ever could. In other words, you can get past appearances and get a pretty good feel for a fellow along the training path.

With all that said, what makes a good running buddy, anyway? Here are my top-10 attributes of the GRUB (i.e. Good Running Buddy) in no particular order:

• General compatibility; achieving an comfort zone with your buddy is essentially, such that you don’t feel like you have to ‘perform’; you absolutely do not feel compelled to come up with or respond to snappy small talk, and that both sides have the ability to tolerate bad jokes silently, without retaliating with needless irritation or violent acts.• Close to the same ambient training pace for all types of workouts, more or less, so that one partner isn’t continually dragging the other along to eventually their mutual discontent.• Steadfast loyalty: Someone who isn’t going to drop you like a hot stone or totally ignore you for the duration just because a fascinating third party joins the workout, no matter how physically attractive or sycophantic they are to your grrr..ood buddy.• 4. The shared impulse and ability to push each other to become better, whether by agreeable verbal encouragement, a sustained pushing of the pace, or a touch of acceleration here and there, all with the purpose of achieving mutual training gains probably unrealized if either buddy ran solo.• The deft ability, likely acquired over a good many runs, to become an amateur coach and trainer to your bud; to suggest practical and perhaps even helpful solutions to various problems hindering performance, such as wisely suggesting to your clueless mate that he go around that same pesky rock that seems to trip him up every time, or to sing the praises of lycra tights on those wintry days in the rain when your partner is shivering his butt off in his soaking dolphin short shorts.• Dependability: You say you’re gonna be there, be

there. And at the agreed time. More than a couple no-shows, and you’re likely to be placed on the FRUB List (Flaky Running Buddy).• Durability: It’s tough to establish a thriving, on-going partnership if your buddy or yourself is usually on the D.L. (Disabled List). • Historian: It is a real bonus if your buddy can build your self-esteem by reciting many of your greatest training or racing hits (the thicker they lay it on, the better). A double bonus if your bud has a knack for dropping these bons bons upon an unsuspecting third party you’re struggling mightily to impress.• Public Relations: Bow down to the GRUB who can effectively and effortlessly proffer acceptable alibis to your running tribe as to why you performed so lamely in the big race or workout; the broader the repertoire of applicable excuses to a given situation, the better (that old football injury, a severe allergic reaction to oak trees, fatigue from secret daily double workouts, etc)• Gallantry/Courteousness: Does your GRUB wait for you at the top of the hill when you’re having an off day, instead of leaving you in the dust with the other speedsters? Does your GRUB let you have right of way when the trail narrows to single track, or does he/she abruptly and repeatedly cut you off to get ahead, as poison oak looms menacingly on the edge? Does your GRUB call splits out to you on the track even from 20 meters ahead when you’ve forgotten your stopwatch?

Doubtless, there are other many other trademarks of a solid running compatriot; which would make your Top-10 list? In any case, let’s raise an overflowing glass and pay proper homage to all of our particular running buddies who have made our individual and collective running experiences all the richer. Salute!

New Club Members

Welcome, New Club Members!

If you have joined the club in the past year and we didn’t get your introduction into the Empire Runner Newsletter, please e-mail a note about yourself to [email protected]. Here are some of the club members who have joined our ranks recently.

Susan Kelleher, age 21Susan started running 2 years ago in 2004. She competed in some races last fall: Bridge to Bridge run, Ukiah Triathlon, Nike Half Marathon and EnviroSports 10k. "I’d like to do a few races this year," Susan says, "and thought that I would sign up with Empire Runners to keep myself motivated and to meet runners who share a common interest. I run to exercise, to get outside, to think and to eat what I want without having to worry too much."

James Mitchell, age 16James will be a junior at Sonoma Valley High School. He has run a 5:12 mile, 11:30 for 3200 metes and 18:56 for 5k. James claims, "I have lived in Pennsylvania for 15 years so I can handle anything that nature throws at me! Also, I am training for a _ marathon in the summer and enjoy having a running buddy. As my old friends in wrestling once told me 'pain is temporary, pride is forever'."

Ellen Ragan, age 35Ellen started running last year. "I always admired my sister who frequently runs races and has run two marathons," she writes. "I think it’s neat that all you need to run is a pair of shoes. You don’t need to show up on time or depend on anyone or anything but yourself."

Jennifer Brazinsky, age 39

Jennifer is a medical social worker and mother of two young children. She has run consistently since October of 2005 and is currently training for a half marathon in May. After that? "Maybe a marathon. I’m looking for running partners for weekends for long weekend runs, 8+ miles."

Ann Marie Von Hoene, age 63

This is me with my daughter, Lisa Gay Vaccaro, at the Human Race 10K on May 13th. It was a very special event for us in that I was 31 years old when I gave birth to Lisa back in 1974. On the day of the race, Lisa was 31 years old (the age I was when I had her) and I was 62 years old (twice her age)...check out our race bib numbers!

I started running back in 1974 in southern Utah just two short months after Lisa's birth and eighteen months after having lumbar back surgery as a result of a serious automobile accident. I have been a devoted runner now for 31 years and I still hold some Empire Runner all time records...even though I have moved on from my need to be number one!

My daughter ran track and cross country for Montgomery High School where Tori and Larry coached her to become the school's number one female distance runner. She went on to become Chico State's number one female distance runner and she competed on a national level numerous times. She also served on the National Collegiate Athletic Committee. Lisa later transferred to the University

of Utah where she received a full athletic scholarship, and it was there where two serious stress fractures revealed an eating disorder and her running career came to an unexpected and abrubpt hault.

Lisa has made a complete recovery from her eating disorder, and she is now coaching track and cross country in the Sacramento area. She will be running her first ever marathon in San Diego this weekend! You have no idea how special it was for me to have Lisa right there by my side as I finished my first 10K race in ten years.

So, you see, I had much to celebrate when I crossed that finish line on May13th...my own victory over incredible odds and 31 years of running, my daughter's return to running and the manifestation of her lifetime dream of making a difference in the lives of young students, our reunion after a painful seven-year long separation, and just the simple thrill of being out there doing it!

Like I have always said: It's the end result of what life puts us through that counts!

The Pacific Association cross country series consists of 10 races on mostly grass, dirt and gravel trails on scenic courses that have hills. Races are held on Saturday mornings (see proposed schedule below) at various locations in Northern California, mostly in the Bay Area. The Empire Runners Club serves as host on August 26 at Spring Lake Regional Park. Races vary in length from 3 miles to 5 miles and team competition is for runners age 21 and over. There are open (up to 39 years old), masters (40-49), senior (50-59), super senior (60-69) and veteran (70+) divisions. The Empire Runners Club has been represented by many runners and teams over the years. Team captains are collecting club members' names for our rosters. A team meeting is scheduled for: Saturday, July 29, 5:00 p.m. at Val & Dave Sell’s house at 5790 Trailwood Drive in Santa Rosa. A potluck BBQ will follow the meeting. Our club is encouraging all Empire Runners over the age of 21 to participate. It is probable that the Empire Runners Club will pay at least some of the entry fees for these events. Captains are eager to field teams and we would love to bring large teams to these events. We set up carpools, support clubmates in other races, warm up and warm down together and often stop for a group lunch on the way home. It's a great team experience. You don't need any cross country experience or any racing experience at all, for that matter. Your pace-per-mile is not important. Whether or not you figure in the team scoring does not matter to us. This club is about participation and we want all of our members to participate in some group activities. You don't have to commit to a certain number of races. If you can only compete in one we would gladly ask you to do so. If you are the least bit interested in the cross country team races, please contact Larry Meredith at 526-4536 or e-mail to [email protected].

Schedule of PA Cross Country Races : August 26: Empire Open at Spring Lake; September 2: Santa Cruz Challenge; September 9: Golden Gate Open in San Francisco; September 30: Garin Park Challenge in Hayward; October 7: Presidio Challenge in San Francisco; October 21: Shoreline Open in Mountain View; October 28: Tamalpa Challenge in San Rafael; November 4: Fleet Feet Open in Sacramento; November 19: PA Championships in San Francisco; December 9: National Championships in San Francisco
