MEANING Emotions are intense feelings that are

directed at someone or something. Emotions are reactions to an object, not

a trait. Moods are feelings that tend to be less

intense from emotions. Emotional dissonance- inconsistencies

between the emotions we feel and the emotions we project.

INTELLECTUAL INTELLIGENCE The capacity to do mental activities-

thinking, reasoning and problem solving. IQ and technical skills are “threshold

capabilities.” They are necessary but not sufficient.

It’s possession of emotional intelligence that allows an individual to become a star performer.

emotional intelligence or EQ is twice as important as technical skills and IQ for jobs at all levels.

DEFINITION Emotional Intelligence is the capacity of

organizing one’s own and other’s feeling for motivating oneself and managing own and that of others.

Emotional Intelligence refers to one’s emotional maturity to understand and differentiate one’s own feelings and other’s feelings, which help one in solving conflict.

THEORY The Multiple Intelligences Theory (Gardner, 1983)

& The Emotional Intelligence Theory (Mayer & Salovey, 1995 Goleman, 1995) –stressed that success in the modern organizations; the IQ contributes only 20% and the rest 80% is contributed by Emotional and Social Intelligences, and luck (Goleman, 1995).

EI is gradually gaining importance in workshops, workplaces, and conference.

Managers and employees are taught about the importance of EI and advised to implement it their workplace (Abraham, 1999). If EI is considered essential for success, than the students of higher study should take this concept more seriously

THE POWER OF EMOTION The quality of our lives is determined by

the quality of our emotions. Power of emotions is our greatest

resource. Emotions are not things that happen to

us; emotions are things we do.

IMPORTANCE .In current scenario, the world has become a

small village. Globalization is seen in every field. Mad rush has started in organizations. Every organization has to compete globally for their survival and to achieve goals. To perform in this competitive world, they have to maintain standard at a level of perfection. Large targets are being given to the employees which make the work environment very stressful. Conflicts are bound to happen. This emotional intelligence helps the leader to come with the functional outcomes of the conflict.

DIMENSIONS 1. Self-Awareness is associated with the ability to be aware of which emotions,moods, and impulses one is experiencing and why. This also includes one'sawareness of the effects of his or her feelings on others. 2. Self-Regulation refers to the ability to keep one's own emotions andimpulses in check, to remain calm in potentially volatile situations, and to maintaincomposure irrespective of one's emotions. 3. Motivation represents the ability to remain focused on goals despite setbacks,to operate from hope of success rather than fear of failure, delaying gratification,and to accept change to attain goals 4. Empathy refers to one's ability to understand the feelings transmittedthrough verbal and nonverbal messages, to provide emotional support to peoplewhen needed, and to understand the links between others' emotions and behavior. 5. Social Skills is associated with one's ability to deal with problems withoutdemeaning those who work with him or her, to not allow own or others' negativefeelings to inhibit collaboration, and to handle affective conflict with tact anddiplomacy.
