    Free International Conference for Medical Volunteerism

    Comes to Emory University

    March 25, 2010The first annual International Medical Volunteerism Conference comes to Emory

    University April 16-18, 2010 with more than 200 renowned speakers and exhibitors from around the

    world. The free conference is the first of its kind and will bring together doctors, health care

    professionals, students and lay people from all walks of life who desire to volunteer their time and

    expertise to help save the lives of fellow human beings.

    Were very excited to have this incredible conference coming to Emory University, said Dr.

    Neil Shulman, associate professor at Emory Universitys School of Medicine and chairman of the

    Conference Organizing Committee. Our goal is to inspire more people to volunteer, as well as offering

    innovative approaches for improving the overall health of the human race, particularly the underserved.We want to create synergies between various volunteer organizations and the volunteers themselves by

    giving them a voice in collaboration efforts in the war against disease.

    The prestigious list of co-sponsors of the Conference on Medical Volunteerism includes Emory

    University School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, Mercer School of Medicine, Medical

    College of Georgia, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Medical University of

    South Carolina.

    Attendees will learn from the inspiring stories of medical, dental and lay volunteers. Conference

    topics include Community Clinics, Hospice Volunteer Programs, Pediatric Programs, Advocacy

    for Patients During Crisis Care, Mental Health, Public Health Programs, Volunteering in Your

    Own Community, Dental Health, Health Education and Wellness and The Haiti Challenge and

    Response, to name a few.

    The three-day program includes opening remarks and keynote presentations Friday evening,

    April 16, from 7 to 10 p.m.

    Saturdays Conference schedule features 16 separate topic sessions, three breakout sessions by

    geography (Africa, Latin American and Asia/Middle East), and an open forum inviting audience

    participationas well as all day photo exhibits and nonprofit exhibit booths. All activities happen in

    several Emory Campus buildings between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday also features atalent show from 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., drawing from the pool of medical volunteers involved in the

    conference.

    Sundays Conference schedule offers 14 separate sessions, geography breakout sessions, and

    open forum, photo exhibits, and non-profit exhibitors between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

    Some of the inspirational speakers include James Sirleaf, M.D., son of the President of Liberia;

    George Lundberg M.D., past Editor in Chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association

    (JAMA); Allen Dollar, M.D., who adopted children from around the world who needed extended

    medical care in the U.S.; Eddie Chapman, a Chicago police officer who created mental health programs

    for inner city youths with celebrities including Michael Jordan; Allan M. Gathercoal, D.D., President of

    Flying Doctors of America; and Steven Thiltgen, who connects volunteers with medical mission

    opportunities through MedicalMissions.org, to name a few. The motivational and informative free

    conference is truly a celebration of local, national and international medical and health volunteerism.
