Biography The Rev. Emory Warren Ross was born in 1887 to Elizabeth Williams Ross and Allison Ross who were teachers at the Southern Christian Institute in Edwards, Mississippi. He graduated from Eureka College in 1908 having the reputation of a top basketball player and went on to serve as the secretary-treasurer for the Southern Christian Institute for two years. From 1910-1912 Mr. Ross taught at Eureka College. He undertook graduate studies at the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin and the College of Missions in Indianapolis. He was married to Myrta Maud [Pearson] Ross (1892-1985) and they had two children, Frances Elizabeth Ross Cummings and Roger Pearson Ross. In 1908 he became the treasurer of the Disciples of Christ Congo Mission, and the following year was made secretary-treasurer of the Union Mission House in Leopoldville, which was conducted as a joint enterprise by a number of missions to serve travelers passing up and down the Congo. He was ordained in 1912, and then from 1912 to 1916 Ross was in Liberia as a missionary of the Disciples of Christ. In 1925 when the Congo Continuation Committee was reconstituted as the Conseil Protestant du Congo, he served as its joint secretary and in 1928 became its first full-time secretary. While in Africa, Emory and Myrta Ross met and befriended Albert Schweitzer and hosted Schweitzer on his first visit to the USA. Emory Ross returned to the U.S. in 1933 to serve as the secretary of both the African Welfare Committee of the Federal Council of Churches and the American Committee on Work in the Congo, representing missionary bodies established in that region. From 1936 to 1953 Ross served as the Executive Secretary of the African Committee of the National Council of Churches of Christ U.S.A. He was a life member and life fellow of both the Royal African Society and the Geographical Society of London respectively. Mr. Ross served as a Trustee of the Phelps Stokes Fund and the N.Y. State Colonialization Society.

This series contains a variety of Ross’s correspondence; notable are letters from Democratic American diplomat Chester Bowles and South African writer, founder and president of the Liberal Party, Alan Paton. Series 8: Writings, Lectures and Teaching, 1919-1961 (1 box, 0.5 linear ft.) This series contains Ross’s literary productions and is organized by the type of document: writings, lectures and teachings.

Series 9: Maps, 1949-1960 (1 box, 0.5 linear ft.) This series contains Ross’s collection of maps including a large collection of National Geographic Magazine maps, organized by geographic location.

Series 10: WWII Related Materials, 1940-1950 (1 box, 0.5 linear ft.)

This series contains documents collected by Ross related to WWII including correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, and publications.

Series 11: General and Oversized, 1898-1962 (2 boxes, 1OS box, 2 linear ft.) This series contains correspondence with English ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey and reports from the African Music Society regarding the International Library of African Music (ILAM) in Grahamstown, South Africa, which was founded in 1954. Also included in the series are letters, reports and memoirs by author Calvin S. Stillman, educator Thomas Jesse Jones, senior secretary of YMCA’s Colored Work Department Channing Tobias, G.B. Johnson, notes by general secretary of the John Milton Society Dwight C. Smith, and writings by botanist H.L. Shantz and professor and Baptist minister H.N. Sherwood. The series also contains programs, invitations and speeches for tribute dinners for Presbyterian minister Samuel McCrea Cavert, sociologist Charles S. Johnson, recipient of the 1946 Nobel Peace Prize John R. Mott, vice president of the Evangelical Church in Germany Martin Niemoeller, and medical missionary Hymen L. Webber. Also included in the series are documents clippings regarding Ross’ wife Myrta Ross, magazine and newspaper clippings, and issues of Hour of Independence Publications. Materials about the Belgian Congo are to be found in this series and are a continuation of the materials on Series 3. These items were identified as having been separated from the Ross papers at an earlier stage in the history of this collection among a large group of unprocessed Missionary Research Library and have been returned to the Ross collection in this series. The oversized materials in this series, found in box OS 35, include the March 1925 issue of the Survey Graphic and Angola Newspapers sent to Ross by J.R. Mott. For further papers on Portuguese Africa see Series 3, box 15, folders 4-16.

Processing Emory Ross Papers have been rearranged from their original order, which is listed as “Packets” in original correspondence. Metal clips and staples were removed from papers and folded items were flattened. Materials were placed in new acid-free folders and boxes. Acidic items were separated from one another by interleaving with acid-free paper as needed. Any items in an advanced state of deterioration were placed in Mylar envelopes. Photographs were placed in Mylar inserts. Some unprocessed documents were identified among a large group of Missionary Research Library materials as part of the Ross collection and redistributed into Series 1, Series 3, and Series 11.
