Progress
Up till today, 7197 survey CDI metadata records from 13 data centres and 114 data originators have been collated and imported into a dedicated EMODnet Hydrography CDI data discovery and access service. This service was launched in May 2010 and has been upgraded over time with extra functionality
These survey data and other gathered composite DTMs have been collated into regional EMODNet DTM’s that are available for viewing and downloading in several formats via the Hydrography Products portal service.
The dedicated EMODnet Hydrography products portal has been launched in May 2010. It sits atop of the central DTM database and interacts with the CDI service and with OGC WMS services
The Hydrography portal has considerably been upgraded and relaunched in June 2011 in response of feedback and comments received.

The majority of the services and used formats in the EMODNet Hydrography portal are already INSPIRE compliant
Upgrading of CDI to ISO 19139 transport scheme is underway as part of SeaDataNet II project
Use of external vocabularies is allowed. => SeaDataNet Common Vocabularies have been proposed to INSPIRE via SeaDataNet SDIC for various themes => awaiting feedback in March 2012
The Delivery of bathymetric survey data sets is done in NetCDF (CF). This is not excluded but not yet named in the INSPIRE Elevation specification. => Has been proposed to INSPIRE via SeaDataNet SDIC => awaiting feedback in March 2012
For the delivery of the DTM tiles present formats are allowed, but it seems recommended to support also the Bathymetric Attributed Grid Object (BAG), IHO S102, once this is mature => explore

A growing number of users that are finding and browsing through the EMODNet Hydrography portal and its CDI Discovery service. Last months we have > 500 visitors per month with an average browsing of 20 to 30 pages
The publicity campaign undertaken via various offshore, oceanography and hydrography portals and online newsletters seems to have effect
Also a growing number of users are finding the Hydrographic Products service and browse the new digital bathymetry layers. Last months we have >200 users per month with an average downloading of ca 250 DTM files per month
Feedback by the online form is limited and if happening, always positive

Survey coverage of the European waters
Objectives :To compile an overview of multibeam and single beam surveys for Europe’s maritime basinsTo assess the coverage of European seas by high resolution multibeam data Estimating the costs for filling the gaps
Approach:Using the already gathered CDI metadata records and exploring further their geographic coverageQuestionnaire has been sent out to other potential sources (incl industry) to identify additional surveys and their coverageCalculate coverage and assess gaps
Identified multibeam bathymetry coverage around Europe
UK EEZ75% (566,120 sq km)
Ireland EEZ18% (76,876 sq km)
part Norway EEZ82% (305,575 sq km)
Percentages of EEZs unmapped by multibeam.
Coastal zone is missing/not well covered in most part of the gathered data sets and produced DTM
Possible solutions in next tender:
Applying a consistent hierarchy of resolution and a common mechanism of gridding to produce compatible grids allowing generalization without to recompute the DTM each time there a new scale specified which is relevant for the coastal zones
Upgrading the gridding algorithm (also learning from Geo-Seas WP11 experiences) for less anomalies – apply for all regions
Also prepare a fully smoothed (polished) version
Also provide a projected grid (X,Y squares) next to the geographic grid (lat-lon boxes) to serve different user communities
Provide technical support and staff capacity to HO’s for reworking / harmonisation of their DTMs and production of metadata (see North Sea HO’s)

Coming activities
Gather more data sets (surveys and composite DTMs)Continue with trying to get hold of surveys for composite DTMs of HO’sFinalise and integrate the Catalogue service for composite DTMs
Together with Geo-Seas project a new freely downloadable 3D viewer is being finalised that will allow users to import the DTM files (NetCDF) and combine these with WMS services (eg geology surface layer) for 3D visualisations and analyses
Produce upgraded release of the new DTMs in June 2012 Deeper analysis of geographical coverage of European seas by multibeam surveys and gaps analysisDemonstrate facilities for external loading of users own DTM data
