Pastor: Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the chosen, and in the

wilderness of temptation you protected your Son from sin. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May

your holy angels be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus

Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

forever.

All: Amen.

Pastor: In this holy season of Lent, we are gathered in worship in the name of the Father, ☩ the

Son, and the Holy Spirit.

A Call to Worship for Black History Month

(Ase (or às̩e ̩or ashe; pronounced ah-shay) is a West African philosophical concept through

which the Yoruba of Nigeria conceive the power to make things happen and produce change.)

Pastor: In a beginning before humans were formed and nature knew God’s great presence, the Spirit moved over the universe.

All: Ashe! The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for God has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. (Psalm 24:1-2)

Pastor: In quiet peace God created people—colorful, balanced, and creatively diverse—and the

beauty of God’s love filled the earth. All: Ashe! “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, with

all your mind; and you shall love your neighbor as

yourself. (Matthew 22: 37-39)

Pastor: In honor and celebration of Black History Month we remember names because of the

ancestors who made a way out of no way with God before them, beside them, and lovingly

guiding them.

All: Ashe! We remember Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, Gabriele Prosser, Nate Turner,

Denmark Vesey, Jehu Jones, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Jerena Lee, WEB DuBois,

Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ida B. Wells, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Ella Baker.

Pastor: These and more represent the great cloud of witnesses. Their spirits linger with us

creating new generations of champions, preachers, prophets, teachers, activists, organizers,

mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters of the African Diaspora.

All: Ashe! After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from

every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages standing before the throne and

before the Lamb, robed with palm branches in their hands. (Revelation 7:9)

Confession and Forgiveness

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Pastor: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

the keeper of the covenant,

the source of steadfast love,

our rock and our redeemer.

All: Amen.

Pastor: God hears us when we cry, and draws us close in Jesus Christ. Let us return to the one

who is full of compassion.

All: Fountain of living water,

pour out your mercy over us.

Our sin is heavy, and we long to be free.

Rebuild what we have ruined

and mend what we have torn.

Wash us in your cleansing flood.

Make us alive in the Spirit

to follow in the way of Jesus,

as healers and restorers of the world you so love.

Pastor: Beloved, God’s word never fails. The promise rests on grace:

Gospel: Mark 1:9-15

The Spirit that comes upon Jesus at his baptism sustains him when he is tested by Satan so that

he might proclaim the good news of God’s reign.

Pastor: The good news of Jesus Christ according to the gospel of Mark the first chapter.

All: Glory to you, O Lord!

Pastor: 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the

Jordan. 10

And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the

Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the

Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13

He was in the wilderness

forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe

in the good news.”

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor: Relying on the promises of God, we pray boldly for the church, the world, and all in

Pastor: In Jesus your realm has come near to us in every place and time. Give your church

throughout the world a spirit of humility and repentance; teach us to trust always in the good

news of your salvation. Hear us, O God.

All: Your mercy is great.

Pastor: You have made a covenant of mercy with every living creature. Protect all the earth’s creatures from destruction. Empower the work of biologists, conservationists, and science

educators. Hear us, O God.

All: Your mercy is great.

Pastor: All your paths are steadfast love and faithfulness. Direct the words and actions of

leaders in our community and throughout the world, that they may maintain justice for the

lowly. Hear us, O God.

All: Your mercy is great.

Pastor: Even in the wilderness you are with us. Walk alongside migrants and refugees crossing

dangerous lands. Tend to those whose lives feel desolate. Give healing and strength to all who

suffer (especially...). Hear us, O God.

Pastor: In the covenant of baptism you claim us as beloved children. Nurture us in our

baptismal identity and teach us to live within it for the sake of others. Strengthen this

congregation’s ministries of care and concern. Hear us, O God.
