During my me at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville I have discovered that I have a true passion for crea ng meaningful and healthful environments within the healthcare fi eld. I fi nd the diffi culty of dealing with the constraints of healthcare design intriguing and constantly ponder why the way healthcare, in general, looks the way it does and how can I change it for the be er. My a en on to detail has played an enormous role in my passion for healthcare as well as construc on documenta on and detailing. I believe interior design is much more than a tac le world — our profession lives in the details.

01Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinic

1-20 3-4 5-6 7-8 9-10

The Tennessee Orthopedic Clinic caters to many pa ents experiencing various levels of pain. Each pa ent has a subjec ve percep on of their own pain hence the necessity of the Wong-Baker Pain Assessment Scale, which is a universal tool that is used to help pa ents describe what they are feeling. The percep on of pain, much like the percep on of space, can vary depending on the surrounding environments. Within the clinic, the pa ent and staff are physically and visually separated crea ng two completely diff erent environments based on visual interest and effi ciency respec vely. The two environments created challenge the s gmas of going to a doctor’s appointment and the produc vity of a tradi onal clinic.

HGTV + UTK CoA+DThe University of Tennessee College of Architecture + Design has partnered with Scripps Network including HGTV in a collabora ve eff ort to improve condi ons in the administra ve offi ce area as well providing a learning experience for the third year interior design students. My group par cularly focused on the break room which was over crowded, unorganized, dark and extremely small. Our design was geared to address accessibility issues, energy effi ciency, sea ng, dayligh ng and water usage.

03 The Cherokee Hotel is a historic icon for the city of Cleveland, Tennessee. Built in 1928, it represented a true travelers’ experience with all of the available ameni es. It was the star ng point for a poten al boom-town and was the place to be within the city. Unfortunately, the hotel was turned into low income housing in the 1960’s and then Sec on 8 housing soon a er. In order for the Cherokee Hotel’s unique history and reputa on to be honored and celebrated, it is our responsibility to restore the Cherokee Hotel back into a hotel. The new Cherokee Hotel will revive the downtown area to be, once again, an up-and-coming boom-town.

Th e new site plan for the Cherokee Hotel incorporates the existing block on which it is located which includes three existing buildings as well as the Johnston city park across the street which occupies an entire block. Th e donor family’s restrictions for the park has prevented the city from fully taking advantage of the much needed green space within the downtown area. We felt that it was important to improve upon what was already taking place in the park as well as expanding and connecting it to our site and other future amenities.

As a result, a pedestrian walkway was created spanning the entire length of the existing park block, through the Cherokee Hotel’s courtyard, and ending in a shopping alley at the end of the block. With the belief that Cleveland will be developing the downtown area more, the city will be able to expand upon the walkway linking the entire area for pedestrians.

04 The Annual All-College Spring Thing, commonly referred to as TAAST, has been a long standing, week-long tradi on within the College of Architecture + Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It was originally created to unify the students within the college through lectures, ac vi es, compe ons, fund raisers and galleries. The graphic of the three single triangles symbolize the overlap and unifi ca on of the three disciplines in our beloved college - Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture. The graphic was then applied to the required banner, poster and t-shirt in order to create a new brand for TAAST 2015.
