kelvingrove bath house

A bath house for the city of Glasgow. The building is sited along the boundary of Kelvingrove Park and is created by the juxtaposition of two axes. The shorter of which connects with the urban context through its alignment with the street pattern and its materiality of dark red sandstone.

The building’s massing and program echo the historical precedent set in Glaswegian bath houses, progressing from public to private and from dry to wet spaces. The longer axis of the bath house serves as this transition between the urban and natural contexts. It creates a directional path and threshold between the heavy urban context of the city street and the private, lighter areas of the bath house.

The already present slope in the site allows for the baths to be located on the second level, yet still be set within the solid earth. This eases the structural load, and enables the users to walk up to the “elevated” bath spaces, enhancing the feel of an open, light atmosphere in the bathing areas.

The structure was aligned along an east-west axis to ensure the eloos receive constant southern sun exposure. A ground level gutter system was installed to help with water mitigation during the rainy season.

A museum to capture the essence of wildfire. The juxtaposition of wood and brick, vulnerability and permanence, showcases the strong relationship between that which fuels the fire and that which contains the fire.

The circulation tower endures each wildfire season, while the observation and exhibition levels are exposed to the flames. Every cycle of fire and reconstruction displays both the destructive and rejuvenating qualities of wildfire.

The sweep of the roof and prominent guttering system provide for a visible system of water collection and storage. The cisterns are sized to supply all the grey water needs of the building and prevent substantial water pollution into the already fragile ecosystem of the bay.
