a program for working professionals + practicing artists

Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s Master of Applied Arts (MAA), Low residency, is a 28-month program for practicing artists and working professionals who want to stay based in their home communities, but who wish to undertake a stimulating and rewarding course of study in a thriving learning environment alongside their professional commitments.

The Low Residency MAA program is delivered through a flexible model that blends inspiring residencies in Vancouver—one of the world’s most livable cities—with Emily Carr’s innovative and interactive online learning culture.

flexible + connectedThe program is structured around three consecutive summers, when students attend intensive July residencies on campus in Vancouver. Internationally recognized and award-winning faculty lead courses in studio production, critical theory, and arts research, giving students the capacity to explore, challenge and expand their creative knowledge in a rich studio environment.

Periods between residencies are underpinned by rigorous online curriculum, allowing students to build and expand on the experience of each summer. Working in their home communities, students develop Virtual Studios to support their studio production in a flexible schedule of real-time group critiques and on-going forum discussions.

Students can choose from one of the following three streams:Visual Arts Media Arts

Emily Carr's MAA program takes an expansive approach to academic thought and to art-making. The interdisciplinary and highly theoretical nature of the instruction is evidence of the importance that Emily Carr places on the advancement of the arts in academia, and of the artist in society.— Gardiner O'Kain, LowRes MAA
