Emigrants in this church book may have resided in the nearby villages of Beerfurth (or Pfaffen-Beerfurth), Klein-Gumpen, Gumpen, Gross-Gumpen, and Laudenau.

I am not a professional researcher; however, I have 20 years of experience working diligently with Colonial Pennsylvania records. My passion is piecing together early settlers, documenting their origin, settlement, and (if) subsequent migration. My primary area of focus is South Central Pennsylvania (viz., Franklin, Adams, York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster, and Berks counties).

I have not had opportunity to examine the original Reichelsheim church books, which may identify other emigrants to the Middle Colonies. My work on the European side is rather primitive—relying primarily on abstracts available via familysearch.org. The actual church records should provide more information than abstracts placed online—including actual village of residence (some may have resided in satellite towns of Graben) and places of birth of the parents.

A large number of emigrants left the vicinity of Reichelsheim in 1749 and 1751. They arrived at Philadelphia either on the 1749 Ship Albany or the 1751 Ship Neptune.

The surnames of Reichelsheim are intermixed with those of surrounding villages—where many other emigrants left for Pennsylvania.

I sense that they are quite a few other persons to be identified.

I cannot locate Jacob German in immigration records. I checked the original passenger list of the 1749 Albany for Jacob on the chance that he had been missed. He does not appear. The Pennsylvania records below link Jacob German, Anna Elisabeth German, and Joh. Adam Reifwein & his wife Anna (nee German). Adam Reifwein arrived on the 1749 Albany and immediately thereafter appears in Pennsylvania church records. On five different occasions, Adam Reifwein & his wife are linked to a Jacob German in church records. Presumably, this Jacob would be Adam’s brother-in-law. Reichelsheim church records give a possibility. The Jacob German, son of Henrich, does not appear in available German records post-1749.

The Anna Elisabeth German who sponsored a child of Jacob German & his wife has not been located elsewhere, but she fits the narrative as a daughter of Henrich German in Reichelsheim and thereby sister to Jacob German and Anna Reifwein.

I have seen several descendants post information connected to this Jacob German online in regards to later generations; however, I sense confusion among several Jacob German’s who lived in close proximity in Pennsylvania. I have not attempted to follow this family beyond the information posted below.

Anna Eva Jöckel, daughter of Wilhelm Selinger [sic] of Pfaffenbeerfurth in the Palatinate, married first Johann Philip Heist. They had 1 daughter and 1 grandchild living beyond the Susquehannah. She married next Bernhardt Jöckel on 13 Nov 1735, a journeyman mason. They came to America in 1751 and he died near Christmas. They had a son named Nicholas Jöckel who is serving 2 miles off Philadelphia. She died 6 Nov 1756 and was buried at Martin Deeren’s place with her second husband. Aged nearly 60 years. [NOTE: I viewed a transcription of these records. I believe Selinger is an errant reading of Klinger.]

Philip Wagner of the Palatinate near Kaiserslautern came to America in 1754, widower the third year, married 16 June 1757 at Hanna Fischer’s house to Elisabetha Jockel, the widow of Baltzer.

Elisabeth Wagner, daughter of Michael & Elisabeth Catharina Engelhardt, born 1721 at Reichenbach, County of Ehrbach. She first married Balsar Jöckel who died in 1753 by accident. They were married for 15 years. She next married Philip Wagner for five months. She died 26 Oct 1757. She had six children by her first marriage, four of whom are still living.

Important: For this surname, also search for Heust and Huesten—the Soundex returns for Heiss/Heist and Heuste/Heusten will bring different results.

With certainty, Johann George Heust (or Heist) of Reichelsheim resided in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania—where he died in 1810. His Reading Lutheran burial record gives his place of birth as “Richelsheim.” It appears that others of this name left Reichelsheim, but I cannot be certain--“possibility pending verification” is more appropriate.

I have included below information on other persons of this name arriving in Pennsylvania, most of whom congregated in western Philadelphia (now Montgomery) County.

Three children of Johann Adam Greiss of the vicinity of Reichelsheim appear to have emigrated to America; viz., Johannes, Anna Elisabeth (the wife of Alexander Klinger), and Johann Adam.

The sons appear in the New Holland Lutheran records of Earl Township, Lancaster County; however, I do not find these men in extant tax records. They likely were indentured servants who—after serving their time—migrated elsewhere. Through cursory searches, I have not yet been able to identify their next place of residence.

1749 Martin Schaeffer

Emigrant Johann Martin Schaffer settled in the vicinity of Upper Saucon Township in modern –day Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. On Ancestry.com, descendants identify the same parentage below and add a date of death of 9 Oct 1809 that I cannot currently confirm. Johann Martin allegedly preached to Washington’s soldier’s at Valley Forge, and the DAR has recognized him as a Revolutionary. However, I did note conflicting data and encourage primary source research on this person. For example: Quite a few family trees identify Johann Martin as the 1750 immigrant of this name on the Ship Edinburgh. It would seem to me that he would be the person traveling in 1749 with other Reichelsheim-area emigrants.

1751 Balthasar Hess


Johann Heinrich Hess & his wife Anna Elisabetha had baptized:1. Johann Balthasar, baptized 18 July 1709

1751 Neptune, arrived 24 Sep 1751 at Port at Philadelphia:Balthasar Hess (signed with a mark)George Kimmel (signed his name)--Enumerated next to each other.

A Balthasar Hess, age 60 years, died at Lancaster in the year 1761, aged 60 years. His wife appears to be an Eva Susanna Kummel, daughter of George & Eva Susanna Kummel.

George Kimmel’s place of birth is given as Gimbsheim in his 1782 burial record. It would seem Balthasar Hess married Kimmel’s daughter in Germany. As Gimbsheim and Reichelsheim are about one hour of modern travel time apart from each other, it would seem that the Balthasar Hess on the 1751 Neptune is not the same person as the one born in Reichelsheim.
