COLIN JAMES TO RELEASE ‘TWENTY FIVE LIVE’CANADIAN MUSIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION TO TAKE PLACE DURING CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK 2013 To commemorate twenty-five years in the music business, Colin James is releasing his first ever live album titled, TWENTY FIVE LIVE The recording took place on November 10, 2012 the third of three sold out shows at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. The venue has a special place in Colin’s musical history as he is one of only a few artists who hold the record for the most consecutive sold-out shows at The legendary Commodore. This accomplish-ment took place twenty-five years ago and is what inspired Colin to return and create TWENTY FIVE LIVE. TWENTY FIVE LIVE was co-produced and mixed by Colin James’ long-time associate, Joe Hardy (ZZ Top, Steve Earle) and contains performances from one entire show. For the past twenty-five years, Colin has been a key contributor to the Canadian music landscape encompassing rock, blues and swing genres. To celebrate his unique accomplishments, The Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry have selected Colin to be a 2013 Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame inductee. Colin will accept this honour on 21 March 2013 at the Canadian Music Week awards gala in Toronto. Colin James is a six-time Juno Award winner taking home the “Male Vocalist of the Year” honour twice and the “Best Producer” award for his efforts with Little Big Band. Front women Zoe Sky Jordan and Colleen Dauncey have expanded their soundscape with a heavier rhythm section that takes cues from Dauncey’s driving synth lines. The outcome is a fearless, anthemic album that is almost impossible not to sing along to.

Long John Baldry: Good To Be Alive (1973).by Paul Myers, author of It Ain’t Easy: Long John Baldry and the Birth Of The British Blues.

Long John Baldry (January 12, 1941 – July 21, 2005) was a com-manding presence on stage. A six foot seven, white, gay, English-man who deftly switched between affected, Noel Coward-like stage banter and singing voice not unlike a Mississippi gravel road. He was already legendary for his sets with Cyril Davies at London’s Eel Pie Island when he discovered young Rod Stewart wailing on a harmonica at a train station. Later, after shifting to pop with the chart-topping UK hit, “Let The Heartaches Begin” in 1967, he ac-quired Bluesology as his touring band, impressing their keyboard-ist Reginald Dwight enough to adopt stage name to Elton John, in tribute. But Baldry’s pop success alienated his original fan base at a time when many of the bands he’d inspired – from the Rolling Stones to Savoy Brown -- were breaking UK blues rock in America.

Toaddinsulttoinjury,Baldry’sdescentintoirrelevancebeganjustas his two protégés, Rod and Elton, were becoming international superstars. Luckily, feeling a debt of gratitude, the two agreed to help reestablish Long John Baldry as a rocking bluesman with a pair of return-to-roots albums, and Stewart’s manager Billy Gaff (through his own label, GM Records) arranged to get them released in America on Warner Bros. The first of these, It Ain’t Easy (1971), with one side produced by Elton and the other by Rod, garnered Baldry valuable American FM radio airplay and his first US tours. After Elton & Rod teamed up again for the followup, Everything Stops For Tea (1972), Warner Bros began to see diminishing returns and did not pick up the option for the third. And now, with Elton and Rod immersed in world tours, Gaff entrusted his house producer, Jimmy Horowitz (who had executive produced the Warners albums) to produce Good To Be Alive at IBC Studios in London.

“We took it at a much easier pace than the ones I did with Rod and Elton,” Baldry told Steve Peacock, “where it was bash, bash, bash for a couple of weeks, simply because they didn’t have much time to spare.”

“We had good musicians,” adds Horowitz, “and everybody played well. They were actually some of the most comfortable, and fun, sessions we ever did.”

Among those musicians, was Horowitz’s wife, singer Lesley Duncan, guitarist Sam Mitchell, and singer Liza Strike was brought in as a powerful foil for Baldry on the Gram Parsons song, “She.” In addi-tion to two rare songs by Baldry himself, “Maggie Bell”, and “Song For Martin Luther King”, the singer and Horowitz handpicked songs like Zoot Money and Colin Allen’s “Good To Be Alive”, Bo Diddley’s “Let Me Pass” and Rod Stewart’s “Gasoline Alley”.

“I remember Roddy turning up one night when we were recording thebackingvocalsto‘GasolineAlley’,”saysHorowitz,“andhewasfuckingblownaway!”

GM Records issued Good To Be Alive in the UK only, in 1973. Despite initial buzz for the single “She”, it would be two years before Gaff arranged for an American release via Neil Bogart’s Casablanca label. By that time, Baldry had entered another dark period in his life and career.

According to Toronto Baldry archivist Jeff Edmunds, had Warner Bros issued Good To Be Alive in 1973 as planned, it might have cemented his reputation in the United States.

“John often said it was his favourite,” says Edmunds, “because it was really the first album where he’d truly merged his folk, blues and roots-rock sides. It would be nice if it were someday recog-nized for its greatness.”
