Why the process industry should use safetyprinciples to cover cybersecurity riskSafety management should be a priority in every business, especially in theindustrial sector. Businesses with good safety practices commonly start meetingswith a safety minute, have personnel execute job safety analyses (JSA’s) andhave developed facility safety cases. These actions assist businesses to reducingtheir safety risk profile.

from MinterEllison on the Perspectives on cyber risk 2019, 53% of ASX200 businesses in Australia surveyedhave cybersecurity as one of their top 5 priorities. The merging of IT (Information Technology) and OT(Operations Technology) networks has played a large part of prioritising cybersecurity as businesses try toensure that their OT cybersecurity risk profile is lower (or similar) to that of their enterprise IT. The report also found that these businesses still have a disconnect between their improved understanding oftheir risk and the practical steps they can take to mitigate against them. Ironically the industrial sector typicallyhas very robust risk mitigation processes but very few apply them on cybersecurity. For example, how manyJSA’s consider the cyber risk, such as the use of a USB on a Programmable Controller or workstation? Howoften is cybersecurity part of a toolbox meeting or safety minute? Further to creating alignment between safety and cybersecurity risk mitigation processes, there are also well-defined mitigation solutions from the IT world that can apply to OT. Emerson has joined forces with McAfee andCisco to simplify and support deployment of solutions such as Application Whitelisting, Secure Remote Access,System Event and Information Management (SIEM) and Network Monitoring. Emerson is the first vendor tohave its DCS platform certified by ISASecure to SSA Level 1 against the IEC 62443 standard, providing assetowners assurance that their DeltaV and DeltaV SIS systems have the security features to deploy a defendablesolution for process and safety controls. Emerson recently partnered with the Australian Cyber Security Centre program which is a government initiativewhere Australian industry partners share and gain insights to improve their resilience against cyber threats anddevelop appropriate response strategies.
