Digital Transformation Goals
• Engaging their customers
- Tailoring individual customer experiences by harnessing data and drawing actionable insights
• Empowering their employees
- Help their employees achieve more by creating a work environments that’s intelligent, flexible, and secure
• Optimizing their operations
- Accelerating responsiveness, improving service levels, and reduce costs with intelligent processes
• Transforming their products
- Differentiate and capture emerging opportunities using data as a strategic asset and shifting from hindsight to foresight

Utilities Transformation
Improving productivity and efficiency
Digital opportunities to improve operations
and increase flexibility are available
throughout the value chain. Conservative
estimates supported by analysis of real-life
cases suggest that digital optimization can
boost profitability by 20 to 30 percent.
Utilities can realize most of this potential by
three means: smart meters and the smart
grid, digital productivity tools for
employees, and automation of back-office
processes.

Automation of back-office processes
• Customer Experience Management
• Customer Life Cycle Mgt
• Digital Billing and Payment Options
• Supplier Management
• Process Standardization

Business Continuity vs DR
• Business Continuity Plan - a BCP is all about how the Business continues to operate if something goes wrong. It is important to ensure that the ownership of this plan is with the business, as this drives the focus of the document. A properly defined BCP would include considerations such as paper processes, communication with customers and suppliers, staff relocation, location of other documents and contact details.
• Disaster Recovery Plan - a DRP will specify how the recovery of a function will be performed. Within a DR plan, there will be individual component system recovery plans that would specify steps to recover applications.

Business Continuity/DR Options
• Data Backup - Examples: VM Backup, storage replication, tape backup
• Wildly varying recovery times – ~4-hours to 1-week• Low cost - $

• Replicates production VMs to a separate cloud• Requires an established Disaster Recovery Plan• Replicated VMs standing by in powered-off status• Usually <1 hour failover process• Moderate cost - $$
• Duplication of production to a separate cloud• Requires an established Disaster Recovery Plan• Near real-time replication to “always-on” targets• Failover in seconds• Expensive - $$$

What is the right option?
• Well that is the $64,000 question…What are the RPO/RTO requirements?
• RPO or Recovery Point Objective is essentially the amount of data the customer can afford to lose in a disaster.
• So if it is ok with losing up to 24 hours' worth of data, then doing a backup or replication once per day MAY meet the needs
isgtech.com
• RTO or the Recovery Time Objective is the amount of time it will take to bring your systems back online or how long you can afford to be down
• An RTO of 4 hours means that the business needs to be back up and running within 4 hours of an outage
What is the right option?

We must also ask ourselves what are we trying to protect against?
• Power Outages
• Earth Quakes
• Floods
• Tornadoes
• Server room or Data Center fires
• Human Error
• Cyber Security Breaches
Disasters to think about…
isgtech.com
What are we missing?
Most people think because they have replicated their environment, they are good to go in the event of a disaster, but they are typically missing one vital piece, connectivity!
• It’s great to have your data elsewhere but when disaster strikes, how are you going to access the data and from where?
• This is an important question as we need to know if they have a second location and we simply need a site to site VPN tunnel established ahead of time or…
• Are their users going to be working from laptops remotely and we need client side SSL VPNs setup on each laptop.

General Business Continuity Overview
• Backup all workloads (VMs)
• Replication critical, higher availability workloads
• For Full Business Continuity (total loss), suggest a ProServeengagement for DRP, runbook, and solution set

3-2-1 Backup Rule
Create 3 copies of data
Keep data on at least 2 types of storage media
Store 1 copy offsite
