Dear Emerging Leader Congratulations on gaining a place on the 2013 East Midlands Leadership Academy (EMLA) Emerging Leaders programme. The NHS is going through an unprecedented time of change. With the recently published Francis inquiry report and the 290 recommendations, the need for strong, compassionate and focused leaders has never before been so important. Robert Francis QC stated -

“The system as a whole failed in its most essential duty – to protect patients from unacceptable risks of harm and from unacceptable, and in some cases inhumane, treatment that should never be tolerated in any hospital.”

The programme that you are about to submerge yourselves into will equip you with the skills, insights and tools to help you make a difference – a difference to patients, their carers and families, to your organisation, to your team and to yourself. We guarantee you a safe learning place to gain self-awareness, explore and experiment with new leadership styles, have peer support, coaching and the ability to be involved in Action Learning Sets. You will hear from experts from within the NHS and the private sector, have the opportunity to interact with colleagues from across the East Midlands, both clinical and non-clinical, gain a learning buddy and listen to different perspectives and have time to reflect. You might have noticed from the recruitment process that the approach to this programme is rather different – we want this programme to be an inspiring and creative development opportunity for you. The application process was part of your new leadership journey and we hope that you have already recognised that and congratulated yourself on gaining a place on this highly sought after programme. We are very proud this year to be working with Capita People Development, they bring a wealth of expertise in the field of Leadership and our programme delivery team are excited to be working with you all. We hope that you will find the next 9 months inspiring and stimulating but most of all that you find that you can use your own personal learning journey to make a real impact within your current and future roles – by practising “Inclusive Leadership for a Purpose”. Best wishes Paul O’Neill Lyndsay Short Interim Director, EMLA Deputy Director, EMLA

Biography

I started my adult career within the Armed Forces serving for seven years until I left to have my children. A career gap followed until my two children reached school age. At this time I became a Homestart volunteer and started studying for a degree with the Open University. I graduated in 2001 with an honours degree and two diplomas. My NHS career started in 2003 after my husband, a serving soldier, was posted to Grantham and I was employed as a Bank Secretary in the Trust Headquarters of United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust. I progressed through the roles of Personal Assistant to Executive Directors, NICE and Best Practice Co-ordinator within Clinical Governance before moving to the Primary Care Trust. I started with NHS Lincolnshire in June 2009 as a Long Term Conditions Support Manager and was quickly seconded into the role of Diabetes Project Manager within the same team. As a result of my role as Diabetes Project Manager I have developed a keen interest in diabetes. In 2009 I was the local Project Lead for a national project with Diabetes UK and NHS Diabetes. The project - ‘User Involvement in Local Diabetes Care’ was fundamentally about involving service users and carers in the decision making process to inform the commissioning process to improve diabetes care locally. This project lasted 18 months and was both challenging and rewarding. In August 2011 I was aligned to work with the emerging South West Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group. I am currently working as an Improvement and Delivery Manager for this CCG and I have recently started a full service review of diabetes. I find the commissioning and service improvement work varied, interesting and exciting, and working with GPs as commissioners brings a new dimension to the job.

Sarah Button

Senior Locality Theme Lead NHS Lincolnshire West Clinical Commissioning Group Contact details 07717 541348 [email protected]

Biography

I graduated from university in 1999 with a BSc in Health Studies. My first role after graduating was as a Medical Records Clerk in an acute Trust. I then took the brave step of becoming a Bed Manager within the Trust and continued this role for three years. I took a secondment opportunity in 2003 and moved to a Primary Care Trust into a role developing GPs with Special Interests. My role was made substantive and I became involved in the local implementation of the national Pharmacy and Oxygen contracts, and became the local Project Manager for the National Primary Care Collaborative for Diabetes and COPD. My particular interest was with Service Improvement Projects so when the local Primary Care Trusts merged I applied to be a Service Improvement Manager with the Practice Based Commissioning Clusters. In this role I led various projects across Planned and Unscheduled Care. I am now working for Lincolnshire West CCG and while my role is largely service improvement, I am also a Locality Manager for a group of GP practices. My current Service Improvement Project is leading the implementation of Integrated Community Teams within each of our five geographical localities. As part of this project I am working closely with GPs and professionals across the health and social community. I am married to Simon and have two young children, Archie (5) and Maisie (3). As a family we love camping and generally having lots of fun.

Louise Clarke

Specialist Medicines Management Technician NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group Contact details 01332 868751 [email protected]

Biography

I started my training to become a Pharmacy Technician in 1997 and continued to work for the same acute hospital for twelve years. I have an NVQ L3 and a BTEC L4 in Clinical Pharmacy. I quickly found my strengths lay in educating patients on their medicines, so I worked on the wards, ensuring supply and education of individual patient medications for their stay and discharge. I rolled out patient self-administration of medication on many wards. I was also part of a pilot where Pharmacy Technicians carried out the morning drug round with the aim to free up nursing time, reduce error, increase access to medicines and increase patients knowledge of their medicines. I really enjoyed the increased caring element of my job that this pilot brought. In 2004 I moved part of my working week out of direct patient care to concentrate on projects to improve transfer of medicines. This involved working closely with social services and community pharmacies as well as GPs, Community Matrons and many other professionals to improve the patient journey. In 2008 I joined the PCT where I worked with GP surgeries advising them of their prescribing trends and individual patient prescribing, answering questions and working with patients on their discharge medicines and repeat ordering processes. As part of the NHS re-organisation I have been offered the role of project managing the large amount of work streams the CCG medicines management team manage. I have been on a short project management course and hope to feel ready to take on the role full at the end of the Emerging Leaders programme. On a personal note I am married with two young children and enjoy lots of activities such as horse riding, climbing and Pilates. I also enjoy camping holidays, festivals and skiing if I get the chance!

Service Manager Framework Housing Contact details 0781 520 1859 / 0115 841 7703 [email protected]

Biography

I work as a Service Manager for Framework Housing Association where I have been working as a Manager for around ten years. Framework is a charitable organisation supporting vulnerable people in the East Midlands and is involved in various activities such as training, employment support, homelessness prevention and supported housing. My current role is to manage a hostel for homeless people based at London Road in Nottingham City Centre. While with Framework, I have managed a range of supported housing services accommodating homeless people, drug users and dependent drinkers. This can be an extremely rewarding position and I am fortunate that I work alongside a team of people that are able to have a positive impact on vulnerable peoples’ lives. It can also be a very challenging environment. This makes the job even more interesting. I am married with three young children. This is my real job – in fact I go to work for a rest! Occasionally I manage to escape and then seek out human free environments where I like walking and bird watching.

Biography

I graduated with a first class degree in Sport and Exercise Science (BSc) at Nottingham Trent University in 2010. I then completed a masters degree in Nutrition with Public Health Management (MSc) at Sheffield Hallam University and graduated in 2011. Whilst completing my masters dissertation I started to work on a Health Improvement Project with Nottingham CityCare Partnership CIC which aimed to protect children and families from the dangers of second hand smoke. Amanda Farquhar

Sexual Assault Referral Centre Manager Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Contact details 01522 524402 [email protected]

Biography

I re-trained to become a Therapeutic Counsellor thirteen years ago as I wanted to work within the caring profession. After I qualified and had worked in the field for a little while I was appointed to be the Manager of Derbyshire’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre, a specialist centre run by the Police with help from Derbyshire Rape Crisis to help victims of rape and sexual assault. I very quickly became involved on a regional and national basis helping spread the word and advantages of such specialist centres for victims. At that time the NHS were not funding or involved in these centres but in 2009 the NHS came on board and this paved the way for one of these specialist centres to open in every region. I applied to set up and run Lincolnshire’s new centre and have been doing this for three years now and also moved my home from Derby to Lincoln. I love my work as I get to see what a difference we make to individual lives but also still being involved on a national level I feel I also get to see what a difference we have made on the wider scope. I have been re-elected as Chair of the East Regional Group for the third time also this year. I still try to practice as a Counsellor and hence hold a very small caseload within the NHS organisation that I work in as well as my current role as Manager. To relax I took up running a few years ago and very much enjoy the freedom this gives me, I run with a local group and with friends and have been known to do the Lincoln 10K wherein I found myself photographed and pictured in the paper for the last two years running.

Hayley Foster

Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Contact details 01777 247321 [email protected]

Biography

I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist from Birmingham City University in 2008. Following this I spent over two years working in Kent. Initially this involved working with young children with severe and complex needs. As my role progressed I expressed an interest in developing the Speech and Language Therapy service with the local Youth Offending Team. This then led to me establishing an assessment and strategy service for young people in secondary schools, a pupil referral unit and schools with children with emotional, social and behavioural needs. I began work at Rampton Hospital in 2011, it was quite a change to what I was used to! Since starting at Rampton I have worked in the Mental Health Directorate, the National High Secure Hospital Service for Women and currently my work is based in the Personality Disorder and Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder directorates. In January 2013 my post split as I joined a project called TC+. This is a national pilot project offering a Therapeutic Community service to prisoners with a learning difficulty at HMP Dovegate and HMP Gartree. This is the area that I want my project to focus on. I love my job and I’m looking forward to developing my skills, knowledge and confidence so that I can be the best I can be so that I can offer the most effective and most sustainable service to the clients I work with. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to music gigs and attending yoga classes.

Joanna Fox (Jo)

Acting Charge Nurse Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS trust Contact details 0115 956 0856 [email protected]

Biography

I qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 2010 from the University of Nottingham. Since this time I have worked at the Lucy Wade Unit based at Millbrook Mental Health Hospital, initially as a Staff Nurse before successfully gaining a secondment as acting Charge Nurse. I have held this post for the past year. Prior to training to become a Nurse I worked as a Health Care Assistant working within NHS and private care settings. These experiences have helped me understand the variety of roles and priorities within frontline health care settings. To sum up my clinical interests briefly, it would be acute mental health services for adults. I enjoy the variety and pace of this specific client group. I also believe that it offers challenges and opportunities to develop a wide range of skills for working with people who have different diagnoses. Along with this I have worked as a link worker developing services for those with a diagnosis of personality disorder and those who self-harm. This has been an interest for me since being a student where I spent time researching the topic to develop an understanding of the difficulties faced by staff and services in managing those with this diagnosis. This led to successful publication of my paper in an academic journal and presentation at an international conference. Off the ward I spend time with my partner, two lively children and two even more lively dogs.

Jacqueline Gregg

Specialist Biomedical Scientist Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Contact details 07841 483774 [email protected]

Biography

I graduated from Lancaster University in 2007 with a first class honours degree in Biomedical Science. Previous to the NHS, I worked at a stem cell storage bank. I am now a Specialist Biomedical Scientist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, in the department of Clinical Pathology, specialising in clinical chemistry. I am currently undertaking a part-time masters degree with the Nottingham Trent University. My masters project is the validation of a new piece of risk calculation software for the Down’s syndrome screening laboratory. I hope to have the opportunity to interact with the service users (the midwives) in a training role, when the software is established. My goal is to remain happy and successful in my job, which I love. My department is currently undergoing a merger with Leicester to form ‘empath’, East Midlands Pathology. I hope the Emerging Leaders course will equip me with the skills I need to cope with, and contribute to, the merger. I feel strongly that the service users should have a greater understanding of how the laboratory operates, and vice versa, as pathology has such a massive impact on patient care. On a more personal note, I live with my boyfriend in Nottingham. We have a cat called Indiana and he loves awkward cuddles when I’m trying to study! Away from work, I am a school governor at a primary school in my village, aspects of which will hopefully compliment the Emerging Leaders course. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also love to read about Tudor England, run, travel, speak Spanish (badly) and sample different red wines.

Biography

I graduated with a BA (Hons.) in Social Work in 2007 and took up a post as a Specialist Social Worker within the Lincolnshire Alcohol Community Treatment Service which is part of Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. I then went on to secure a post as a trainee Cognitive Behavioural Therapist where I completed the PG Dip in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy while at the same time as working directly with patients. In 2011 I became a fully qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and I have just completed my masters in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy. In my current role I work with patients, who are suffering from either Depression or an Anxiety Disorder and find this work interesting, challenging and rewarding. I particularly enjoy working with those suffering from social anxiety and agoraphobia as the results and improvements can be amazing and unbelievable. I also have responsibility for clinically supervising two Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners. On a more personal note I live with my wife and two fantastic daughters aged two and four. When I get a bit of free time away from playing Barbie with my daughters, I enjoy mountain biking, playing football, badminton and squash, wood carving and photography.

Sally Hawes

Senior Paediatric Physiotherapist Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Contact details 0115 849 3326 / 07913 638684 [email protected]

Biography

I completed my degree in Physiotherapy in 1995 in London and have since then worked in many different hospitals and settings across the UK and abroad. I have specialised over the years in Neurology and Paediatrics which has led to my current position as Clinical Lead for Physiotherapy in Neurology and Neurosurgery at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. In all the different roles I have undertaken over the years I have always been passionate about improving the service for people using it. In 2007 as part of my own development and learning I decided to return to studying to do a degree in Humanistic Counselling. This significantly enhanced my physiotherapy practice bringing together the understanding of mind and body as well as giving me the skills to listen more effectively and therefore hear people’s experiences more clearly. Currently I work part-time as a Physiotherapist and spend the rest of my working hours coordinating a service for young people with medically unexplained presentations and working as a counsellor. I am married and have two boys. Away from work I enjoy baking, gardening and most sports especially skiing. I also like getting involved in local community based activities and charitable groups.

My career in Training and Education began in a call centre environment, specialising in customer care training. From there I progressed into managing training activities for a large American manufacturing organisation. Phil Homer

Orthopaedic Lead Physiotherapist Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust Contact details 01604 544411 [email protected]

Biography

I graduated from Coventry University in 2005, completing a BSc. (Hons.) Physiotherapy. Since August 2005 I have worked at Northampton General Hospital, initially as a band 5 Rotational Physiotherapist before promotion to a band 6 Senior Physiotherapist post. During this time I rotated through all specialties within a general hospital. I developed an interest in trauma and orthopaedics at a very early stage in my career, largely due to the variety of cases that you encounter, the people that you meet and the turnover in caseload. In 2010 I became Physiotherapy Team Leader for the Trauma Service in a seconded position that ran for 2 years. This post allowed me to begin developing both my leadership skills as well as becoming actively involved service development at a trust level. In early 2013 I was appointed into my current position of Orthopaedic Lead Physiotherapist, developing services to the Elective Orthopaedic Patient Group. It is a post that is both challenging and rewarding and a further opportunity to develop patient centred services. I am married with a two year old girl, and enjoy spending time with the family. I am a keen sports fan, following Portsmouth FC and international rugby union. I enjoy going to the gym and generally keeping fit.

Barbara Howard

Practice Development Matron Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Contact details 0115 969 1169 ext. 56202 [email protected]

Biography

I trained as a Registered General Nurse at the Nottingham School of Nursing. After qualification I was accepted into the Neonatal Service working there for over two years, qualifying in specialty before going on to train as a Registered Midwife at Derby. I worked as a Staff Midwife at Derby and Nottingham before returning to neonates in Nottingham. I developed my interest in education and obtained a Clinical Educator post; after a few years this led to a successful application for the post of Nurse Educator with a Neonatal Network, covering three neonatal units in the East Midlands. I planned and delivered study days, enjoying teaching in both classrooms and clinical areas. I then obtained a lecturer/practitioner post at University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust working in partnership with De Montfort University. I stayed in Leicester for five years and the post evolved in that time to a Senior Lecturer role within the University, becoming Programme Lead for an honours degree pathway in addition to lecturing and tutorial responsibilities. In December 2011 I was fortunate to commence my current role of Practice Development Matron with the neonatal service in Nottingham. Returning to the neonatal service with a new perspective and new skills makes undertaking the Emerging Leaders Programme especially timely for me; I can identify potential improvements the service could undertake for the benefit of the babies and their families and for the neonatal team who care for them, and will appreciate the peer and expert feedback and support which will help me to make improvements most effectively. Outside work I have a busy time with my two children but do try to maintain a social life in the limited time available, enjoying live music preferably in a pub!

Adeline Hunt

Ward Manager, Thorneywood Adolescent Unit Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Contact details 0115 844 0529 [email protected]

Biography

I qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 1988 and began my nursing career with Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. I focused most of my clinical practice in Adult Mental Health both inpatient and day services. From clinical practice I moved into service development and for three years I was a Trust Facilitator for developing Self Directed Teams, this looked at how teams looked at their accountability and capability to function competitively in the health market place and the ownership of teams to self-manage their service areas. From this initiative I moved into the independent sector and discovered the different ways services outside the NHS operated I looked particularly at forensic services and this was a valuable experience. I re-joined Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS trust in 2011 and took up the post of Ward Manager of the Inpatient Adolescent Unit at Thorneywood. This was an exciting time as the service was going through a significant period of change. I continue to lead a large multi-disciplinary team through development and we are now preparing ourselves for further development and re-design of the services across the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. I love my life in nursing and I am passionate about delivering excellent care. I love people and working with teams and helping shape the future of care. This is what keeps me alive and buzzing always looking for the next challenge while maintaining and nurturing what is good.

Nicola Hunt

Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Contact details 07717 811072 [email protected]

Biography

I qualified as a Physiotherapist in 1992, and specialised for 12 years in Acute Cardiorespiratory, within the medical wards, intensive care, and cardiac and thoracic surgery. In 2004 I took up a part time post with Newark and Sherwood PCT working in the community, treating people with long term conditions. Seeing daylight after years of being inside the intensive care unit with no windows was a significant change. But not as significant as being able to see the people I treated as people, not patients. Seeing them in their own environment, actually seeing, rather than hearing about “the stairs that are much steeper, and with a bend half way up”, being able to engage with their family and support network enabled me to deliver a truly person centered, individualised therapy programme. Since 2004, the demand for physiotherapy has grown, and with it, so has the team. From starting as a lone Physiotherapy Practitioner I am in the exciting position of providing clinical leadership for an expanding therapy team as we embrace the new working model of the Virtual Ward, and looking forward to the knowledge, skills and experiences I will have from the Emerging Leadership course to assist me to become a better leader. Always one for a new challenge, and wanting to help and inspire others to achieve their potential and to give something to the future of the NHS, in 2008 I took on an additional part-time post as a Lecturer, teaching on the Access to Higher Education qualification. Additionally I have a role as a Health Ambassador, visiting schools and career events to promote careers in the NHS. And I don’t reserve my challenges for my working day. I have a good work life balance, and enjoy the physical challenges of climbing, kayaking, cycling, as well as the challenge of bringing up two teenage boys.

Rob Hynes

Information & Data Quality Manager Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust Contact details 01604 544719 [email protected]

Biography

I started my NHS career back in August 2004 as an Information Analyst for Northampton PCT on the commissioning side. My roles before that involved an analytical and system development background for companies such as Scottish & Newcastle and the University of Northampton. I became a Senior Analyst for the PCT in July 2007, which was mainly working for the commissioning side of the PCT. When the Provider Services split from the PCT my Director at the time offered me a role within the Provider Services which I took. In June 2009 I re-joined the Commissioner as a Contract Performance Manager managing a team of Analysts looking after the main acute contracts and monitoring the agreed plan against activity of each of the main Acute Trusts. I wanted to have experience of working within information in an acute setting and joined University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire in February 2011 as a Transformation Analyst, which was a very interesting role. However, with the amount of travelling involved and having a family I decided to look closer to home and I became the Information and Data Quality Manager at Northampton General Hospital in December 2012 and became a member of a great team. Through my career in the NHS I have met and worked with some lovely people who have inspired me. My other interests are my family (son and wife) and socialising with my friends. I also love motorbikes and the motor GP. I love watching football and I love swimming and exercise and one day would love to complete a triathlon…… (one day).

Biography

I qualified as a Physiotherapist in 1999 and have specialised in Paediatrics since 2001 initially as a band 6, gaining experience in the acute and community settings, before securing my first band 7 post. Following a two year career break to live in South Africa and work with a project supporting people with HIV/Aids, we returned, with our first child, to Nottingham where I secured a band 7 post specialising in Paediatric Neurology and Oncology. I currently job-share this role and thrive on the variety my role brings. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and their families and learn from every one of them in the way that they handle a diagnosis and treatment. I have embraced the responsibilities my role brings; leading a team on a day to day basis and working on service development projects, striving to ensure that the highest standard of rehabilitation is delivered to all our patients. I am currently working with consultants and other members of the multidisciplinary team in developing a business case to improve the service we offer to children with long term rehabilitation needs across the East Midlands. I look forward to the Emerging Leaders Programme, having space and time to learn and my thinking challenged through this valuable learning opportunity. I hope that it will extend my leadership skills and support me in representing the patients and striving to provide a gold standard rehabilitation service. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two energetic boys aged seven and three who keep us on our toes! I am very involved with activities at our church and at my eldest son’s school. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and singing, crafts and baking to relax and unwind.

Rachel McMurray

Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust Contact details 0116 225 3712 [email protected]

Biography

Having completed a first degree in Psychology in 2001, I had a number of jobs working with people with communication difficulties such as Healthcare Support Worker and Teaching Assistant in a school for children with special needs. This experience helped me to decide that a career in Speech and Language Therapy was for me. I undertook an MSc in Language Pathology at Newcastle University and qualified in 2005. I worked from 2005-2012 in Sunderland. I have always enjoyed working with adults, and initially worked with a mixed caseload of adults with communication and swallowing difficulties due to stroke and other neurological difficulties, and adults with learning disabilities. From 2007-2012 I worked solely with adults with learning disabilities, and supervised and managed a small team of Speech and Language Therapists. Despite my love for the North East, I saw my current post advertised and was very keen to apply. I am from Leicestershire originally, and this, coupled with the new and exciting role, convinced me to uproot and move back with my husband (who is a Geordie!) to the East Midlands in January 2013. My current role is a brand new post. I work alongside ward teams and other professionals to provide and develop a Speech and Language Therapy service for older people with dementia or functional mental health difficulties. I am currently developing the role and presence of Speech and Language Therapy on the wards and working with patients, their families, carers and staff teams to maximize their ability to communicate and eat and drink effectively, as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Outside of work I enjoy cooking, and have just taken up running. It’s slow progress so far, but it does help me to unwind after a busy day!

Theresa Mohan

Senior Physiotherapist Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Contact details 07812 268296 [email protected]

Biography

I qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2004 and quickly specialised within Neurological Physiotherapy. I have worked within a variety of health care settings, including overseas. I moved to Nottingham in 2009 as a Senior Neurophysiotherapist gaining experience across the whole Trust. In 2011 I deviated away from a clinical role and took up the role of Project Lead for a service improvement project across the Inpatient Therapy Department at Nottingham University Hospitals. This was both an incredibly challenging and enjoyable experience, gaining a wealth of new skills. From this I moved into a role as Project Lead for the ‘Rightsizing’ of elective theatres. This involved constructing and negotiating Consultant timetables in order to use the 21 theatres in the most efficient way. This exposed me to more complex involvement with finance, HR process, communication planning and I gained a deeper understanding of the Trusts vision. I began my current role in 2013, working in neurological rehabilitation, setting up a service in order to provide rehabilitation within the community. The service aims to reduce length of stay by discharging patients sooner with our input, reduce care needs of our patients through improved function and independence and deliver a quality service by treating patients within their own home. It is an incredibly rewarding job and I have been able to use new skills within an area that I am passionate about. I am also a very keen photographer currently obsessed with seascapes; I love to travel and hate to miss a summer festival!!

Gemma Newbury

NHS Personal Health Budget Programme Manager NHS Nottingham City Clinical Commissioning Group Contact details 0115 883 9474 [email protected]

Biography

I graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2003 with a degree in Health and Human Sciences. I have worked in the public sector for the past nine years and have held posts in both national and local organisations including GOEM, The Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, Nottingham City Council and NHS Nottingham City. During the past couple of years, I have worked across both the local authority and the NHS to explore personalisation in health and social care for citizens in Nottingham. This project was called ‘Staying in Control’. The purpose of this was to find out if self-directed support works for people with memory problems, who use healthcare services. Following this project, I led the development of an expression of interest to be a personal health budget pilot site. The focus of this was to expand the ‘Staying in Control’ pilot to include patients with neurological conditions and Continuing Health Care needs. This bid was granted full pilot status by the Department of Health in November 2009. During the pilot we recruited patients to a test and comparison group. All patients on the test group were offered a personal health budget. After lots of data collection, interviews and analysis, the final evaluation was published in November 2012. I am now leading the development of NHS Nottingham City’s personal health budget: Next Steps Programme. This involves building on the lessons learnt during the pilot and exploring the use of personal health budgets for more patients in Nottingham including roll out for all patients eligible for NHS Continuing Health Care and joint funded patients. Most recently, I have also been given responsibility for commissioning community stroke, neurology and speech and language services in the City. In my spare time I enjoy walking my dog, running, reading, cooking and painting. I also enjoy going out with friends and going on holiday!

Deputy Clinical Systems Manager Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Contact details 01933 235809 [email protected]

Biography

I began my working career in Network Operations with Abbey National and worked through the ranks progressing up to the Network Support Team. Following a TUPE transfer to BT I completed one year in my existing role of Network Support Analyst and a further three years working as a Service Introduction Manager for a variety of major customers. My journey with the NHS began in November 2008 when I joined the Clinical Systems Team as a Clinical Systems Administrator. This role gave me a fantastic introduction to the Trusts clinical teams and systems and gave me the perfect foundation to progress to my next role. I took the opportunity to join the Implementation Team where my role as Implementation Trainer/Facilitator allowed me to directly engage with community teams on new systems deployment projects. It was in this role that I became more aware of the issues that clinical staff face when using IT and clinical systems and developed a drive for building systems configurations that work for the clinicians whilst still meeting the Commissioners reporting requirements. I have been in my current post of Deputy Clinical Systems Manager for twelve months, in the Clinical Systems Team where my journey began. The team has grown over the past year and I am looking forward to working with the team to tackle the challenges ahead. Away from work I enjoy watching motorsport and crew for a Pro-ET drag racing team.

Allison Silverwood

Acute Contract Manager NHS Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group Contact details 01332 868898 [email protected]

Biography

I made the decision to join the NHS during my father’s terminal illness. The interactions I had with so many different elements of the healthcare system provided me with an understanding of how individuals across organisations work collaboratively to care for a patient. There were many positive experiences, but there were also areas where improvements could have been made which would have positively impacted upon our patient and family experiences. This ultimately motivated me to get involved and give something back; both by way of thanks, but also to help drive continuous improvement. Recognising that I tend to faint at the sight of blood, I secured an office based position as a Service Improvement Facilitator with NHS Derby City in 2005. I was inspired by the work undertaken by the organisation to provide high quality patient care and so since then I have been promoted and expanded my knowledge by specialising in Individual Funding Requests and more recently Acute Commissioning. My experiences of these two very different areas of work; one dealing with often emotive and contentious single requests for funding which fall outside of existing contracts and the latter working on large scale service provision with a variety of Acute providers, has been really insightful. Currently, the opportunity of working within a Clinical Commissioning Group is enabling me to work closely with hospital management and GPs in order to ensure that there is always a patient centred focus to all elements of contracting; whilst managing the budgets. It is important to me that I add value, as well as being value for money for taxpayers; hence my involvement in the Emerging Leaders programme. My aim, as I develop both as an individual and as a leader, is that my contribution will have an increased impact so that I can feel assured that I really do make a difference.

I’ve worked on the Hyper Acute Stroke Admissions Unit as a band 5 for two years. I then progressed to a band 6 Deputy Sister and did this job for another two years. I feel so lucky having a career in nursing and love my job and feel really passionate about what I do. I am studying on my degree pathway and am now writing my dissertation around Leadership and Management in Nursing and hope to go on to complete my masters after this. Currently I am the Project Lead for Stroke Services working alongside our Trust’s Service Improvement Team ‘better for you’. This role has given me the chance to look at the whole stroke pathway and lead our team into making our service more productive. Many projects have come out of this work and I have been closely involved with them all and really enjoyed it. On a personal note outside of work I love spending time with family and friends they are a very important part of my life.

Biography

My professional background is in nursing and I’ve worked in the NHS since 1989. My career took a different path in 1997 when I took a post as Cardiology Clinical Trials Research Nurse. Since then, I’ve worked in research in a variety of roles, from working with a research team to developing my own research studies. I now work in primary care research and my role is to facilitate delivery of a portfolio of studies. I support research teams to develop strategies to recruit patients from primary care, and I work with primary care providers that deliver those studies. The job is very interesting and challenging. I have the opportunity to work with a large number of people and organisations, which presents its own challenges in terms of juggling their needs. I particularly enjoy nurturing an organisation as they develop capacity to deliver studies. What keeps me going is a firm belief that excellence in healthcare is founded on reliable evidence, as well as the values of staff members and the organisation.

Team Manager – Health Visiting Nottingham CityCare Partnership CIC Contact details 0115 883 8900 / 07920 861486 [email protected]

Biography

I qualified as a Registered Nurse in London and then continued to train and qualify as a Registered Midwife. My initial experiences of clinical practice were in the most deprived boroughs of London which enabled me to obtain an insight into the most vulnerable groups in society at an early stage of my career. As a result of such experiences I moved back to my roots, Nottingham, to commence my Health Visitor training; Public Health Nursing – Health Visiting. I have worked as a Health Visitor for the past fourteen years within a diversity of settings and have regularly become involved in staff training and working with the wider multi-disciplinary agencies. Consequently, the delivery of the public health agenda has been paramount throughout my career as has being involved in working towards national and local targets. In 2010 I completed a Law degree and subsequently completed the Legal Practice Course at Nottingham Law School. This was a personal achievement for me; the knowledge that I obtained as a result of completing this study has been transferable and has been invaluable in the health care setting. Since January 2013 I have been employed as a Team Manager within the Health Visiting service. I currently manage three health visiting teams and have recently taken on additional managerial roles. I am very much enjoying this new role and look forward to developing my leadership skills as a direct result of being selected to undertake the Emerging Leaders course. In my personal life, I am married and a very proud mum to two children. When I have any spare time (!), I enjoy socialising with family and friends and listening to music. I would love to undertake an art course and this is something I would like to personally achieve in the year ahead.

Suzanne Temple

Senior Physiotherapist in Amputee Rehabilitation Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Contact details 01623 622515 ext. 4266 [email protected]

Biography

I trained as a Physiotherapist at Manchester Metropolitan University from 2005-2008. I then travelled to Nepal to work voluntarily on two healthcare projects; one in a children’s orthopaedic hospital and the other in a small centre for children with muscular dystrophy. During this time I resided with a Nepalese family in a small rural village and so had the opportunity to experience family life in a developing country. On my return to the UK, I secured two successive temporary junior physiotherapy posts before commencing permanent employment with Sherwood Forest Hospitals (SFH) NHS Foundation Trust. I completed my junior rotations in various specialties before progressing in the field of amputee rehabilitation, which is my current area of interest and expertise. I acted up into a Clinical Lead secondment role to cover a fourteen month maternity leave period which provided me with a great opportunity to really develop my leadership skills and style. I continue to seek development opportunities and additional responsibilities in my role as Senior Physiotherapist within the team. I am a frequent source of support for management and director colleagues at SFH and lead various development and improvement projects within therapy services. Examples of this include setting up a website for therapy services across four hospital sites, leading the patient safety component of the therapy services benchmarking team, producing an information pack for physiotherapy undergraduates embarking on clinical placements at SFH and producing a business case to establish cardiac rehabilitation as a substantive specialist service instead of an out-of-hours additional role for several non-specialist physiotherapists. I am extremely dedicated and motivated to giving 100% in everything I do. I currently live in Nottingham with my partner. In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit at a local health club, contributing to charitable work and I also love to travel.

Caroline Timms

Senior Physiotherapist University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Contact details 0116 258 5816 [email protected]

Biography

I have been a Physiotherapist for nine years and have worked in two acute NHS Trusts since graduating from the University of Birmingham. At City Hospital, Birmingham, I gained a wealth of experience in a range of specialties and progressed to a Senior Rotational role after two years. In 2009 I was successful in gaining a Senior Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy post at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Working areas have included the outpatient department, fracture clinic, GP practice, trauma wards and plastic surgery wards. I frequently educate undergraduate physiotherapy students and appraise junior staff. For the last eighteen months I have enjoyed being based in the Hands, Burns and Plastics Team which involves a mix of inpatient and outpatient work each day. I work very closely with the multi-disciplinary team, attending outpatient Burns Clinics and Consultant led Hand Trauma Clinics. Deputising for my senior during her secondment has greatly developed my non-clinical skills; coordinating four people’s diaries to ensure that all wards and clinics are covered, liaising with other local therapy teams to transfer patient’s care and helping to organise our department’s participation in a national research trial. I regularly attend courses to continue my professional development and in March this year I achieved the British Association of Hand Therapists level 1 qualification. Outside of work I enjoy cake decorating and playing tennis. I live in Leicester with my husband.

Releasing Time to Care Facilitator University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Contact details 0116 258 7269 [email protected]

Biography

I qualified as a Registered Nurse (Adult) in 1999 and have not looked back since! Nursing is truly a most rewarding profession, albeit both physically and mentally difficult. I am passionate about nursing and driven to make a difference to people’s lives. I recognise that focused leadership is fundamental to make sustained changes, hence I am delighted to embark on this leadership programme to continue my leadership journey. I have a varied nursing career history which has helped me grow as a professional. I am registered as a Specialist Nurse (Cardiac) on the NMC register, obtaining my degree whilst working full time as a Deputy Charge Nurse on a Cardiac Unit. It was at this stage that I realised the influence nurses have within the NHS and I was inspired to make changes. I moved Trusts, a daunting prospect, where I was appointed as an Angina Nurse Specialist and set up a nurse led service, unique to angina patients. I have also had occupational health nursing experience where staff welfare is paramount. I have even spent time as a lecturer influencing the nurses of tomorrow on an access to nursing programme. I am currently part of the Releasing Time to Care team. I love this job because I have the opportunity to work with ward teams to help empower them to make changes to fundamental care processes. The benefits are truly fruitful and I’ve personally been inspired by some of the fantastic Nurses and Health Care Assistants out there.

Christine Wilkinson-Cook

Continence Nurse Advisor Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Contact details 01777 274422 ext. 8008 [email protected]

Biography

I joined the NHS as a Nursing Assistant, within Sheffield Health Authority back in 1989, which was not as I originally planned, as I had just qualified as a Chef that same year. I then went on to undertake my nurse training at the Rotherham School of Nursing, and qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1995. I stayed on at Rotherham for the next fifteen years, nine of those working within Care of the Elderly in secondary care, then latterly within District Nursing in the primary care setting. I have been in my current role, working initially as a Continence Staff Nurse and more recently as a Continence Nurse Advisor, for Bassetlaw Health Partnerships since 2010. I work closely with both the adult and paediatric community teams, and also with the care home sector to offer advice, support and training/education, as well as managing my own clinical caseload. I love my job and care deeply about the quality of care delivered and also that the patients’ experience on their journey is an excellent one. I feel that being a participant on the Emerging Leaders programme is an exciting opportunity to learn and explore the art of good leadership and to allow me to gain the toolkit to grow both personally and professionally. I have worked within the caring profession now for almost twenty four years and look forward to many more and to the contribution that I can make to the future development of services. On a more personal note I am married with four children, ages between seven and nineteen years and have a ménage of animals, which means ours is always a busy household. I have a good work/life balance; I enjoy walking, gardening and reading although sometimes there is a slight shortage of spare time!

Biography

I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University as an Occupational Therapist (OT) in 2008. In my final year I travelled to South Africa, spending three weeks studying the effects of HIV/AIDS on families within the local townships with the University of Cape Town. This experience broadened my horizons and gave me a passion for learning through international perspectives. I started my OT career at Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust working on the medical wards. I then move to Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) in 2009 gaining a band 5 Rotational post. I have worked in many different clinical areas giving me a breadth of experience including health care of older people, the children’s hospital, neurological rehabilitation and stroke. I was awarded the Nottingham Roosevelt Travel Scholarship 2012 and spent two months in America to investigate the role of OT in early rehabilitation in Major Trauma Centres. I have presented my work to many audiences including the British Association of Occupational Therapists Annual Conference 2013. I have promoted this opportunity, inspired others to apply and now mentor Scholars. I regularly use Twitter as a means for continuing professional development through participating in a variety of online talks including #OTalk, #WeNurses and #nhssm. Using the twitter handle @_beckyOT I share information relevant to the NHS and my profession. I have gone on to set up accounts for the Therapies Department at NUH @NUHTherapies and the Nottingham Roosevelt Travel Scholarship @NottsRoosevelt. I really relish challenges and I have a passion for influencing positive change for better patient care and outcomes. I enjoy discovering more about the world through films and documentaries. I find creativity through photograph, arts and crafts a very relaxing pursuit, and it contributes to my occupational balance. I live in Ruddington with my partner Adam and enjoy walking in the local countryside.
