Ensuring that you are open for business is within your power.

Chances are thoughts of power reliability and business continuity planning have crossed your mind recently.

Whether you’re concerned about losing perishable inventory, sensitive business data, or sales – and the ability to service your customers – having a backup power strategy is imperative. An unexpected power outage can wreak havoc, compromising customer service and company security. Power disruptions are estimated to cost the U.S. economy up to $188 billion every year. • When a large retailer fell

victim to an extended power outage, food spoiled, custom-ers went elsewhere and sales were lost.

• Evacuations and cleanup after a hurricane struck a wide area

of southern Florida were ham-pered when residents were not able to get gas for their vehicles. Many gas stations had enough fuel but were un-able to access it because they had no power and no backup system.

Eaton’s emergency, standby and backup power solutions address problems such as these. Whether your backup power requirement is relatively small (such as an 800-Amp conve-nience store) or large (such as an 4,000-Amp hospital), Eaton can provide a portable or permanent emergency and backup power configuration for every need.

Making sure that you are always in position to be up and running is Eaton’s business. Ensuring that you are open for business is within your power.

Blackouts, hurricanes, lightning, floods, high winds. Power outages caused by utility interruptions and weather disasters are frequent occurrences throughout the world. When a major power grid failed, causing a blackout in the Midwest and Northeast U.S., and Ontario, Canada, more than 50 million people were left without electricity. And one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, Hurricane Katrina caused massive and long-term outages throughout the Gulf.

Are you willing to be without power for one second? One minute? One hour? Do you have a business continuity plan in case of a power outage?

Every business depends on electricity, and ensuring its reli-ability is vital. When the power is out, the costs to your business can be immense: lost productiv-ity, lost sales, lost inventory, lost customers.

Depending on how much backup power you need – and how long you’re willing to be without power – Eaton has various solutions for connecting backup power systems to many types

of facilities. Should you invest in a permanent, on-site generator? Or does it make more sense to have portable generators stored in a central location and dispatched when needed? Can your business survive an outage of minutes or hours... or do you need continuous, uninterruptible power, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Depending on your answers, Eaton can help you decide which product is best for you. To get started, just contact your local Eaton Sales Represen-tative or visit us on the Web at www.eatonelectrical.com.

Portable Systems

Cutler-Hammer® Safety Switch Quick Connect

For smaller facilities, with requirements of 800 Amps of generated power or less, Eaton’s Cutler-Hammer Double-Throw Safety Switch Quick Connect devices provide a safe way to transfer power from the utility to the backup power source. This product is ideal for facili-ties, such as convenience stores, pumping stations or cell towers and can be supplied with your choice of several types of connectors, including single conductor, cam-type or multi-conductor, pin-and-sleeve connectors.

If your facility and business can withstand a brief power outage, but you don’t want to be shut down for days or weeks during an extended outage, then a portable generation strategy may be right for you. In addition to having access to an appropriate portable genset, you will need to have a way to safely and quickly disconnect your facility from the utility and connect the generator to your electrical system. Eaton offers several different solutions.

Cutler-Hammer® Switchboard Quick Connect systems

This equipment offers the same features as the Safety Switch Quick Connect but is designed for facilities with larger loads, between 800 and 3000 Amperes. This product typically is provided with multiple conductors per phase to reduce the weight of the individual cables. And, like the Safety Switch version, it is appropriate for both new construction and retrofits.

Cutler-Hammer® Roll-Up Generator Termination Box

The Roll-Up Generator Termination Box is an intermediate termination point between the generator and the facility. Line connections are provided for connection to the generator as well as load terminations for a permanent connection to the facility. The offering is provided in a heavy duty, outdoor enclosure specifically designed for this purpose. Suitable for loads up to 2500 Amp, three-phase, this solution is ideal for situations where there is a need to minimize the length of exposed conductors between a portable generator and the building.

Permanent Solutions

Cutler-Hammer® Transfer Switches

Automatic Transfer Switches sense when power is interrupted and send a signal to the generator. With a UPS to bridge the time be-tween when the signal is sent and when the generator is engaged – usually just a few minutes – your facility will not experience a power interruption. Once power has been restored, the process is automatically reversed. Manual Transfer switches perform a similar function but do not automatically sense power interruptions and require a person to initiate the transfer.

Caterpillar® Paralleling Switchgear

Eaton, through a joint venture relationship with Caterpillar Corpora-tion, offers Caterpillar Switchgear with PowerLynx Control Technology. Paralleling switchgear allows a facility to receive power simultaneous-ly from two or more sources, including multiple generators and the primary utility feed, and provides the highest reliability possible. With paralleling switchgear, a facility can operate its generator while still receiving power from the utility, allowing the user to minimize energy costs by reducing peak demand levels or to qualify for an interruptible rate option from the local utility.

If your facility is one that requires a continuous, highly reliable power source, such as a hospital or data center, Eaton’s permanent emergency, standby and backup power solutions are ideal. By automatically switching your facility to backup power, you and your customers won’t experience an interruption. Eaton has extensive experience in providing highly reliable systems for critical power applications.

Powerware® UPS

An uninterruptible power system (UPS) is a key element of any backup or emergency power strategy. A UPS provides a bridge from the moment power is interrupted to engagement of a generator or restoration of power. A UPS can keep the cash register open or your computer running. Eaton’s Powerware brand of single-phase and three-phase UPS systems can provide you with the level of power reliability you need.

Eaton Engineering Services

Eaton’s team of over 1,000 full-time, field service engineers is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for disaster recovery services. This same team is available to work with you to recommend, and if required, retrofit your facility to implement an appropriate standby or backup power system.
