Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) has developed an RT-PCR kit that has a higher accuracy of detecting COVID-19 across various mutant strains, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) said on Tuesday.

The new multiplex RT-PCR kit developed by SCTIMST in Thiruvananthapuram, a DST institute, targets two SARS-CoV-2 genes -- RdRp and ORFb-nsp14 -- and the human RNAse P gene as the internal control to help detect a range of mutant strains.Even though coronaviruses make far fewer errors than other RNA viruses, the mutations in S, R, and N genes often interfere with RT-PCR assay.

In order to target the multiple variants in the second wave, using two highly accurate confi rmatory genes like RdRp and ORF-nsp14 can give precise results.

The ORFb-nsp14 is one of the least mutated genes in COVID-19 and currently, there are no kits in the market with ORF-nsp14 as

the target. The new kit is based on

multiplex Taqman chemistry, amplifying all three genes in a single reaction. The amplifi cation time for the assay is 45 minutes, apart from the time required for the RNA isolation from nasopharyngeal swab samples.Multiplexing two confi rmatory genes will help short-list possible new variants if one of the genes fails to amplify and can be marked for sequence analysis.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has validated this kit at the National Institute of Virology, Pune, and found that it has 97.3 per cent sensitivity and 100 per cent specifi city in COVID-19 detection.SCTIMST has signed a non-exclusive license MoU with Huwel Lifesciences, Hyderabad, on May 14 to commercialise the kit.

"This unique RT-PCR kit will be a signifi cant weapon in our fi ght against COVID-19 by a facile detection of SARS-CoV-2 mutations which are becoming increasingly important," said DST Secretary Ashutosh Sharma.

However, there was no major disruption in its production and delivery.

People must come forward for inoculation

Many people are reluctant to get vaccinated due to rumours and fear of the side effects of the vaccines. The rural population

also postponed the vaccination for fear of the danger posed by the vaccine after hearing various incidents spread across social media platforms.Currently, the second wave is spreading fast and the elderly and villagers are in a state of mind that they could have survived if they had been vaccinated. The medical facilities established there and the vaccination program for all helped the western countries to partially escape the peak of the COVID wave. But in densely populated countries like India, it may take a few months for everyone to be vaccinated. In this situation, the shortage of vaccines is causing problems for the central and state governments. The Government of Tamil Nadu, which is intensifying its efforts to control corona, has now fl oated a global tender to import corona vaccines. The public must cooperate with such government initiatives.Vaccine awareness should be created especially in the villages and everyone should be integrated into the immunization activities. The Unique Identifi cation Authority of India(UDAI) has stated that documents such as Aadhar are not mandatory for vaccinations. Therefore, the public should come forward to get vaccinated and support the government in combating the COVID 19.

Shailaja axed , Pinarayi Kin among fresh faces in teamTHIRUVANANTHA-PURAM MAY 19

The infusion of fresh blood into the new LDF government would have been hailed as a political masterstroke had the CPM leadership shown a little prudence in granting legitimate exemptions and put in place checks to weed out nepotism in the selection of ministers.

The most heartbreaking, without doubt, was the decision to leave out K K Shailaja who, as health minister, had fearlessly led the Covid and Nipah fi ghts from the front and won hearts at the international level not just for her approach but also attitude.

Her victory in the Assembly polls with record majority was an endorsement for that, but more signifi cantly, the good work she did was vital in the Left front retaining power.

Social media is abuzz with comments, with a number of celebrities joining the hash tag campaign,#BringBackShailajaTeacher but CPM is unlikely to have a rethink.

The move of the CPM state committee on Tuesday to replace all existing ministers with 10 fresh faces and one senior who had served a term earlier completed the generational shift the party had started with the replacement of all

two-time MLAs with new names during the candidate selection. The CPI, which also followed the norm set by the state council in 2016, rightly replaced all four ministers with fresh faces.

In the fi nal count, 17 of the 21 ministers designate are fresh faces.

Along with CM Pinarayi Vijayan, JD (S) nominee K Krishnankutty and NCP’s A K Saseendran had served in the 2016 cabinet.

CPM leader K Radhakrishnan was a minister in the 1996 E K Nayanar government, besides serving as the Speaker during 2006-11.

However, the charm of the list which had talented leaders such as P Rajeeve and K N Balagopal — who both had proved their parliamentary skills in Rajya Sabha — and three women — a record in the history of state — as ministers was overshadowed by the decision to exclude Shailaja.

Being a central committee member and second only to Pinarayi in

terms of seniority in party, Shailaja was supposed to be the No 2 in the new cabinet. Her work as health minister, which won applause globally, was all the more a reason to give an exemption. CPM state secretariat decided unanimously on uniform scale On Tuesday, the CPM state secretariat unanimously decided to apply a uniform scale to all and not to exempt anyone. The result was a list of 10 new cabinet members. Radhakrishnan, who is a CC member and a prominent dalit leader of CPM at the national level, was inducted into the cabinet as he was back in parliamentary politics after a gap of 10 years.

The inclusion of fi rst-time MLA P A Mohamed Riyas and R Bindu in the list was also a surprise to many CPM workers.

The most heartbreaking,

without doubt, was the decision to leave out K K Shailaja who,

as health minister, had fearlessly led

the Covid and Nipah fi ghts from the front

and won hearts at the internati onal

level not just for her approach but also

atti tude.
