Exit DischargeThe exit discharge is the portion of themeans of egress between the building exitand the public way. According to the 2003Life Safety Code, section 3.3.175, a publicway is defined as "A street, alley or othersimilar parcel of land essentially open to theoutside air deeded, dedicated, or otherwisepermanently appropriated to the public forpublic use and having a clear width andheight of not less than 30ft (50mm) (120in)."

See page 4 for Code information.

Traditional emergency lighting and exit signs were primarily focused on guiding occupants tothe exterior of a building. Today, an additional focus is being placed on getting occupants to anexit safely and down a path of safety once they are out of the building. This guide will helpdefine the exit discharge, reference code requirements for the exit discharge, and identifyproducts that can be applied to meet exit discharge requirements. Either normally-on ornormally-off fixtures can provide exit discharge illumination. However, this guide will onlycover normally-off remote fixtures.

Path of egress Exit discharge

DescriptionSince the nature of the exit discharge isoutdoor applications, standard luminairesmay not be suitable. Outdoor applicationsfall into two categories: damp location or wetlocation. According to chapter one, article100, of the 2002 National Electrical Code, damp locations include ". . .partially protectedlocations under canopies, marquees, roofedopen porches, and like locations. . ." Wetlocation is partially defined as ". . .locationssubject to saturation with water or otherliquids, such as vehicle washing areas; andin unprotected locations exposed toweather."

Remote FixturesIn general, remote fixtures offer advantagessuch as lower initial cost, lowermaintenance costs, and better aestheticsover typical emergency battery units. Theseadvantages are more prevalent inenvironments that require special ratingssuch as wet location and NEMA 4X, or inareas where ambient temperatures candiminish battery capacity or life. Bothoccurances are common with the exitdischarge.

In many instances, the battery unit can beinstalled in a normal or conditionedenvironment with the remote heads locatedin the areas that require special ratings.

The following chart lists normally-off remotefixtures that may be used in damp or wetlocations. Please consult the LithoniaLighting Product Selection Guide for lamptype, voltage, and wattage.

Power SourcesOnce the classification of an environment is determined and the remote fixtures have beenchosen, the next step is to determine which power sources will operate the remote fixtures froma normal or controlled environment. If a facility utilizes unit equipment for its emergencylighting, the option of running the exit discharge remote(s) off of those units should beconsidered. By utilizing the chart below, select which unit(s) will work best for the application.

If the facility is not utilizing unit equipment for its emergency lighting, the exit dischargeremote(s) can be powered by special exit signs that are placed above any door leading to theexit discharge. The exit/unit combination, LHQM, provides 6 to 21.6 watts of remote capacitydepending on the unit and option(s) selected (see chart below). The ELA LEHO is a canopyaccessory that provides 11 watts of remote capacity after it has been field-installed on aSignature® LED emergency exit sign.

CodesLife Safety Code (NFPA 101)

Section 3.3.136 Means of Egress:A continuous and unobstructed way of travel from any point in a building or structure to apublic way consisting of three separate and distinct parts: (1) the exit access, (2) the exit, and (3)the exit discharge.

Section 3.3.136.1 Accessible Means of Egress

Section 7.9 Emergency Lighting:7.9.1.2 “. . .exit discharge shall include only designated stairs, ramps, aisles, walkways, andescalators leading to a public way.”

Section 7.9.2 Performance of System:7.9.2.1 “Emergency illumination shall be provided for not less than 1-½ hours in the event offailure of normal lighting. Emergency lighting facilities shall be arranged to provide initialillumination that is not less than an average of 1 ft-candle (10.8 lux) and, at any point, not lessthan 0.1 ft-candle (1.1 lux), measured along the path of egress at floor level. Illumination levelsshall be permitted to decline to not less than an average of 0.6 ft-candle (6.5 lux) and, at anypoint, not less than 0.06 ft-candle (6.5 lux) at the end of the 1-½ hours. A maximum-to-minimumillumination uniformity ratio of 40 to 1 shall not be exceeded.”

Since exit discharge is one of the three components defined as the "means of egress" per 3.3.121of the Life Safety Code and since 7.9.1.1 also includes exit discharge, many authorities havingjurisdiction have concluded that the lighting levels of 7.9.2.1 apply in full. Note: Variations mayexist depending upon the interpretation of codes in your area.

VOLTAGE DROP TABLES

The following information is provided to assist in planning layouts for emergency lighting systems. The National Code limits voltage drop to a maximum of 5% of nominal. Thus, circuit runs must be of sufficient size tomaintain operating voltage when remote fixtures and/or exit signs are connected to the emergency lighting equipment. The table below shows the length of wire run based on system voltage, wire gauge and total wattage on the run.

Formula: As per National Code standards,

VD = 2 x L x I x R1000

where L = length of run in feetI = currentR = resistance of material at 75°CVD = voltage drop

HIGH CAPACITY UNITS

FEATURES & SPECIFICATIONSINTENDED USE — Provides a minimum of 90 minutes illumination for rated wattageupon loss of AC power. Ideal for applications requiring attractive unit equipment withquick installation and unparalleled performance.CONSTRUCTION — White, compact, low-profile contemporary design. Engineering-grade thermoplastic housing is impact-resistant, scratch-resistant and corrosion-proof. UL94V-O flame rating. UV-stable resin resists discoloration from natural andman-made light sources. Two 9W wedge-base krypton lamps offer 80 percent more light output than the stan-dard 9W incandescent lamps.Patented MR24, multi-faceted reflector significantly improves photometric perfor-mance – 48 percent more light delivered to the path of egress.Tool-less access for maintenance. Rigid conduit entry on both top and sides on largeunits (ELM654, ELM1254, and ELM1272), and top only for small units (ELM618 and ELM627).Universal J-box mounting pattern.Low-profile, integrated test switch/pilot light.Unique track and swivel arrangement permits full range lamp head adjustment.US patent No. D-532,918. Patent-pending Quick-Mount for simple installation. Ceilingmount standard.BATTERY — Sealed, maintenance-free lead-calcium battery standard.Sealed, maintenance-free nickel-cadmium battery optional.Automatic recharge after a 90-minute discharge.Low-voltage disconnect prevents excessively deep discharge that can permanentlydamage the battery.Single-circuit battery connection.ELECTRONICS — Universal input voltage capability (120 through 277V, 50 or 60 Hz).Current-limiting charger maximizes battery life and minimizes energy consumption.Provides low operating costs.Short-circuit protection — current-limiting charger circuitry protects printed circuitboard from shorts.Thermal protection senses circuitry temperature and adjusts charge current to pre-vent overheating and charger failure.Thermal compensation adjusts charger output to provide optimum charge voltagerelative to ambient temperature.Regulated charge voltage maintains constant-charge voltage over a wide range of linevoltages. Prevents over/undercharging that shortens battery life and reduces capacity.Filtered charger input minimizes charge voltage ripple and extends battery life.AC/LVD reset allows battery connection before AC power is applied and preventsbattery damage from deep discharge.
