In my wanderings around the College, I popped into several classes from Year 12, all the way to our youngest cohort and this is what I observed: A Year 12 Maths’ class, where the teacher was engaging the students in some high level, problem solving equaons that were far beyond the cognive abilies of this Principal! A Year 7 English class that was undertaking some silent reading – you could hear a pin drop and then you could almost hear the breathing of the characters from the text A Year 8 Technology class where the teacher was moving around the class, adjusng saw handling techniques as the design from their computers came alive in a three dimensional format A Year 11 VCAL class assisng the College maintenance manager with foongs for a new retaining wall, understanding the importance of drainage and civil compliance around OH&S parameters A Middle School Outdoor Ed class that was reading maps and working collaboravely together to unpack the lesson objecve All this is happening at Emerald Secondary College – engagement and smulated lessons are made visible and transparent on Compass, so the students are clear on the Lesson Objecve and Success Criteria, as per our Instruconal Model. As assessments are completed across the school, teachers will meet in their curriculum teams to moderate SACs (School Assessed Coursework – Year 11 and 12) or CATs (Common Assessment Tasks – Years 7 – 10) accordingly. This professional pracce regulates consistency across all classes, ensuring that a high mark for a piece of work in Mrs A’s English class, would also receive a high mark in Mr B’s English class. This meculous aenon to student assessment is important and educaonal research indicates that the biggest inhibitor of student learning growth is variability between classes. The skills taught, and the assessments undertaken need to be consistent across a curriculum area. This is happening today and will happen tomorrow and will happen all year. Great kids. Great teachers. Great school. Council Elecons This week we closed our official 2019 School Council. There are some openings for our parents to join School Council. Good governance strengthens community confidence in the school council and helps to ensure the council’s reputaon is maintained and enhanced. Good governance enables the council to perform efficiently and effecvely and to respond strategically to changing demands and educaonal challenges. Nominaon forms will be available from Monday 24th February and need to be returned by Monday 2nd March.
