With the small exceptions of Christmas, Halloween and National Bath Safety Month (every January, look it up), Easter is probably our favourite seasonal holiday here at NE1 Magazine. Something about the pushing back of winter, the blossom in the air, and the excuse to eat head-sized orbs of chocolate in a single sitting without having the usual ‘what am I doing with my life?’ emotional breakdown half-way through. We hope you share our passion for this time of year, and even if you don’t we’re still going to gently push you towards untold cultural riches anyway, with all the usual look-aheads and dare-to-treads that you’ve come to expect from these 24 pages of glossy wonderment. Contained within, there’s restaurant expansions, a chat with the Newcastle Eagles and all the best shenanigans taking place under the banner of Easter. Flip through and find out.Oh, and while you’re flipping though, keep an eye out for an April Fool’s ‘snippet’!

Hello there, Mr Bunny. Can you tell us how preparations are going for this year’s eggy-bonanza? sure thing! we've almost got all of the eggs ready, our route is mapped, and my intensive cardio training's really starting to pay off

That sounds great, are you doing anything differently this year? Not really, no. we have a tried and trusted method for Easter Egg delivery and we try not to mix things up too much

Can you tell us much about it? well, there's a degree of magic involved, but the rest is surprisingly scientific. Trade secrets though, I'm afraid

How does your method of getting all the eggs around differ from that of, say, Santa Claus? Have you ever seen a 20st man in a winter suit try to chase a rabbit? There's a reason I don't need a sleigh

Will you have any chance to have a look around Newcastle while you're here? Have you visited before? I won't on the actual day, but I've been here a few times before. Two relatives of mine live in the bushes next to the civic centre

Have you got any particular Easter message for our readers? well, obviously chocolate eggs are delicious, but they're best enjoyed as part of a balanced diet with plenty of exercise

Newcastle is looking to get a whole new idea of the best pizza with the re-opening of Pasqualino’s Bar and Pizzeria on Market Street. The Geordie-Italian De Giorgi siblings have invested £100,000 in the installation of a new open kitchen which includes a Woodstone oven, which weighs four tonnes and reaches a temperature of 900˚f, and they claim it will make the best pizzas in Newcastle. Restaurateurs Aldo, Joseph and Cristina De Giorgi advise that their wonderful new pizza crust, known in Italian as ‘cornicione’, is highly prized and should be enjoyed, not discarded. If you’re not a fan of pizza then there is a second addition to the kitchen, the Spanish Josper, a traditional charcoal grill, so that grilled meat and fish dishes can be cooked on aromatic wood to give a rustic, smoky taste. The De Giorgi siblings are well-known in the Newcastle dining scene after creating some of the city’s most popular bars and restaurants including Paradiso, Popolo,

Have you awarded yourself a fancy job title recently? I ask because it appears to be all the rage. It is particularly prevalent in local government of course, as self aggrandisement is part of the make-up of our local representatives. A couple of years ago, a local worthy was invited to switch on the Christmas lights in a local town. In the local paper he was identified as ‘Councillor Popinjay – Cabinet Member with portfolio for streetscene and local environmental issues’. How fantastic is that?? He represents about a 1,000 people and he has a longer and grander title than the Secretary General of the UN.I mention all this because of a furore a few weeks ago over a job advert placed by those doyens of ‘finger on the national pulse’ – the Houses of Parliament. They had advertised for a ‘Barista’, with a wage touching about £20k annually. Apparently a ‘Barista’ is essentially an Italian name for a waiter in a coffee shop, but to justify charging about a fiver for a cup of foam, the word now becomes a noun rather than a verb. Now, I have no problem with the wage, why shouldn’t a waiter be paid a decent wedge? It is this recent mania for calling a spade an ‘earth inverting implement’ that staggers me. Job pages are laden with openings for facilitators, co-ordinators and core principal consultants. A wagon driver, as was, is now a ‘logistics operator’. How I wish I could have caught onto this at an earlier age, who knows where I’d be now. Instead of trundling along as a fork lift driver and Army soldier, I should have juiced my CV up as a ‘Bulk stores input/delivery facilitator’ and ‘Professional international disputes arbitrarian’, maybe now I wouldn’t be earning a crust as an ‘Academe throughput representative’. If you can guess that, you are a true facilitator.

Do you walk? Do you like Asian food? Splendid, because Electric East are broadening their horizons to street catering.Electric East, based on St. James’ Boulevard, are taking to the streets with their new project, Electric East Catering Corp, to showcase their Asian cuisine to fans of street food in the region. You will be able to sample the fresh and healthy Asian cuisine at a number of festivals and events throughout the year, and you will be able to book Electric East for corporate events, garden parties and other private gatherings, with the option to create specific menus.Manager Mark Lagun said: "We’ve noticed the growing local appetite for street food, and we know that our dishes suit this informal style perfectly, so we decided that now was the ideal time for Electric East to go mobile. “We’re bringing our fabulous Asian flavours to the whole region, to introduce our great quality dishes at affordable prices to those who may not yet have visited the restaurant.”Electric East Catering Corp debuted at the Street Spice event at the Centre For Life earlier this month and will be popping up elsewhere in the future. To keep up to date with any announcements, you can follow @electriceast on Twitter.

ADAM kAvANAGH, 54, TYNEMOUTH

The life of a professional basketball player, playing abroad, feels a bit like how I would imagine Dr. Who feels. That, and a little like feeling that you've forgotten something important, but never quite figuring out what. Each year as a professional brings about a new round of assimilation and a different set of challenges. Some players find themselves in a new country at the start of each season, facing new people, a new culture and way of life. Not to mention a new team, new coach, and new expectations of performance. Much like an alien travelling the universe righting wrongs, it can become a whirlwind of experiences, people and places, unified only by the game.Which is why that ungratified feeling can sometimes linger. With such a short time (typically 8-9 months) in one place, it becomes a battle to make an impact off of the court, as well as on it. Not to leave a legacy necessarily, but to feel as though you've made a difference, and your value can't be summed up with a single glance at the league table. Which is why playing for the Newcastle Eagles has been great. We are in the business of basketball, and winning is always our aim. But amongst our players and management there's an understanding of the importance of community and self-enlightenment. I feel a little bit less like Dr. Who here.www.newcastle-eagles.com

The Pursuit Of Happiness by Michael Mulvihill & The End Has No End by Stephen Palmer. Two solo exhibitions by artists whose primary focus is drawing. For The Pursuit Of Happiness Michael Mulvihill makes tiny, painstakingly executed drawings depicting explosions from nuclear tests carried out during the Cold War, together with portraits of politicians and Russian cosmonauts of the period. For The End Has No End, Stephen Palmer has produced a series of drawings based on clippings from newspapers. While at first sight the topics appear random – from ufology, World War Two, a chess match, stamp collecting to anonymous obituaries – each clipping is rendered in word perfect detail, a transcription that confers value and worth to events that may otherwise appear of little importance. Dale Atkinson Paintings. As a student, Dale Atkinson was a non-conformist, refusing to follow fashionable trends. He made paintings of stories his father told him when he was a child and, while he was a student those childhood fables provided the starting point for his paintings enabling him to create a world of meta-reality somewhere between that of Durer and Richard Dadd. Never mere illustrations, they presented inexplicable events happening in an undefined theatre of activity. Albert Irvin: Gouaches 1979-96. Widely regarded as one of the country’s most admired abstract painters, Bert Irvin is perhaps better known for his bold, invigorating paintings. Nevertheless, throughout his career he has produced small gouaches and watercolours alongside the larger paintings, but as independent images rather than studies, which have fed into and responded to the larger works. The development of Irvin’s visual language of painterly motifs, squares, circles, lines and crosses, the hallmarks of his large colour saturated canvasses, are concentrated in this collection of gouaches, dating from 1978-1996. YOUR COMPREHENSIvE LISTINGS GUIDE TO WHAT’S ON IN NEWCASTLE CITY CENTRE THIS FORTNIGHT

For a region with a global reputation for the vibrancy, creativity, and ingenuity of its young people, the recent findings that there had been 120% rise in youth unemployment in the North East has created an emergency that must be tackled. In Newcastle alone, there’s 1,175 more young people claiming benefit than before the recession. There are no overnight solutions, but NE1 is doing what it can by teaming up with the YMCA and a number of city centre businesses to help tackle youth unemployment in the city. The result is a young people’s centre which provides a space to relax and socialise, together with structured and non-structured courses aimed primarily at boosting enterprise and workplace skills. Called Space 2, the centre, based in three formerly vacant units in the Newgate Centre, is open to young people between 4pm and 8pm during the week and 12pm until 6pm at weekends. While these times will be reserved for use by 13-18 year olds, the centre will also be available to book during normal business hours by businesses and charities seeking to work with other age groups. Sean Bullick, NE1’s Chief Executive told us; “NE1 and our business partners recognise that there’s a huge issue with youth unemployment across the country. Young people are the future of the region, so we want to make sure they know the city centre is there for them too and at the same time provide them with skills that will increase their employability.”

THURSDAY 21ST MARCH

Gail-Nina Anderson: The Second In The Gothic Legends Series. Although Guy Endore’s novel The Werewolf of Paris was a great success in 1933, its subsequent neglect means that the werewolf tends to loom larger and (hairier) on screen than in literature. However, of all the great movie monsters he can probably claim the longest pedigree, belonging to a strand of folklore that is rooted in pre-history and manifested in cultures across the world – human-into-animal – a guise which must have inspired genuine terror outside the safe boundaries of the horror film or fiction. This talk considers the pervasive concept of the werewolf, discussing such cultural manifestations as Lon Chaney’s reluctant shape-shifter Larry Talbot and Angela Carter’s gleeful reclaiming of the wolf inside the woman. 6.30pm, free. The Lit & Phil, Westgate Road, Newcastle. www.litandphil.org.uk

THURSDAY 28TH MARCH

Gail-Nina Anderson: The Third In The Gothic Legends Series. In the Pantheon of Gothic legends the mummy holds a special place – unlike vampires and werewolves it is demonstrably real. The sad remnants of desiccated and bandaged humanity that we can see in museums have a fascinating (real) history, but when and how did they experience an unexpected rebirth into the popular culture of horror as shuffling, homicidal monsters? This talk discusses the early literature of the reanimated mummy, centred on the Conan Doyle stories Lot 249 and The Ring of Thoth, considers the mummy’s curse and illustrates the history of mummies
