The actress who plays Steff Hardock is called Denise Welsh.
She has played a number of similar roles in soaps such as Waterloo Road. The most notable
of these are probably her characters Frances Myers in Bad Girls and Natalie Horrocks in
Coronation Street
Heavily ‘Lipsticked’ which could
allow us to associate her as a ‘Bunny
Boiler’
Bright coloured shirt would perhaps
portray her as a bit of a ‘rebel’
Her stance would perhaps suggest
laziness (Slouched over)
French writing and flag in the background possibly
gives away her profession in the school as a French
teacher
Buttons undone once again
supporters Bunny Boiler image as
well as showing her untidiness
So she looks distinctly unmotivated
in her job, sustained by her glazed
expression
Tom Clarkson is played by Jason Done.
His first notably TV appearance was in ‘Blood and Peaches’ where he is one of four boys
involved in murder which relates back my initial thoughts of him being a serious character in
Waterloo Road. He also starred in a Television series called ‘Wokenwell’ where he played
PC Brian Rainford a Police officer, a role following the ‘controlled’ ambience of ‘Tom
Clarkson’
Apple shows he has a teacher’s pet
or admirer.
He once again looks very de-
motivated within his job
Lots of work on his desk shows he is
perhaps behind with marking or
something
Lots of examples of English in the
room which perhaps means he’s an
English teacher
Apple shows he has a teachers pet
or admirer.
Judging by his expression he could
be the ‘hardman’ of the school
Possibly representing class within
the school. He is surrounded by
what look to be sophisticated novels
and he is also dressed very smartly
in a shirt and tie, which are all done
up to make him appear ‘smart’
He looks very in control
though I think. He gives off
vibes of being fairly important
to the school community
Looking at a 10minute clip of Waterloo Road- Private school and Public school
amalgamation
In this question I would like to analyse the way in which the Upper Class private school
children have been depicted in this clip. Some ‘Wide’ and ‘Two’ shots have been used to
distinguish the Private kids from the Public kids. This is very effective as the shots show the
segregation between the two groups and the awkwardness that is created by them (Private
Kids) being there.
I would now like to look at the uniform and dress of the public kids. The public kids seen in
the clip tend to be poorly dressed with their top buttons done up and their shirts un-tucked,
this is highly contrasting against the Private kids who are very smartly dressed in the same
type of uniform. I think this has deliberately been done by the director who has used this
technique to help the audience see the stereotypical difference between the groups.
This brings me on nicely to the races of the two groups. The Private students are almost all
white. I think this is once again deliberate to conventionalize Private students has being the
sons and daughters of rich Bankers and Farmers, two jobs commonly associated with white
people in England.
The final characteristic of the two groups that stands out is accent. Which has once again
followed the stereotypical image that Private school kids all speak of a much higher
standard of English than common old Public School students. For example several of a public
students have acquired a distinct London Grime accent (In the middle of Rochdale where
Waterloo Road is set?) which is interesting as all of our Private school students have either a
well to do accent or a well spoken Northern accent (If that’s humanly possibly), basically a
northern accent with a posh twang
