Embodying the Dream Festival Celebrate the Legacy of MLK through Dance, Music, Visual Art and Spoken Word DANCE: Dance Theatre of Harlem Community Workshop – All ages welcome! Create poetry through motion with members of Dance Theatre of Harlem. Participation in this workshop is on a first come first serve basis. Liturgical Dance Workshop – All ages welcome! Participants dance and feel the spirit of Gospel and strength of Protest in this introduction to Liturgical Dance. Celebrate the Dream through Dance: Carolyn Dorfman Dance Inspired by Dr. King’s themes of equality and freedom, experience the language of Modern dance with members of Carolyn Dorfman Dance. Soul Steps: History of Stepping Workshop – All ages welcome! Participants learn the art of Stepping, a percussive dance form that utilizes the entire body to meld folk traditions, percussive movement, singing, speaking, hand claps and storytelling. MUSIC: Cabaret Workshop: Storytelling through Song Create and express the perfect combination of feisty attitude, comedic timing and riveting performance with NJPAC’s Musical Theater faculty. A Love Supreme: Jazz Music of the 1960’s Listen and learn about the life and work of the accomplished musician, composer and legend John Coltrane with NJPAC’s Director of Jazz Instruction and master saxophonist Mark Gross with accompaniment by the Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens. DJ Workshop: Sampling from James Brown to Present – All ages welcome! Funk and R&B legend James Brown is not just considered the Godfather of Soul, but he is the most sampled musician in hip hop. Join the NJPAC Hip Hop Institute faculty and spin through the songs of the 60’s to understand the musical and protest spirit that gave birth to hip hop. Jazz Orff Playroom – All ages welcome! Kids can swing and bop to the beat using improvisation and interactive play on tambourines, Orff xylophones, congas, djembes and shakers using the music of the movement as an inspiration. MLK to this Day – All ages welcome! Go on a musical journey through U.S. Civil Rights History exploring music from the Swing Era, Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights Movement up through current day hip hop. VISUAL ARTS: Community Art Project: I Dream a World – All ages welcome! Make Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy concrete in this 3D Visual Community Arts project where participants demonstrate their dreams of a better world by crafting with recycled objects. Visual Arts Project: Dreamscapes – All ages welcome! Create, make, visualize and reflect. The best art created is influenced by Dreaming Big. Take a moment to leave your artistic signature behind in this room of creativity. SPOKEN WORD: Civil Rights Storytelling – All ages welcome! Explore the themes and memorable stories of the Civil Rights movement with the entire family. Poetry and the Black Arts Movement – All ages welcome! In the 1960’s, a new movement of art and protest emerged in the midst of a changing and turbulent time. The Black Arts Movement generated legends like Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou and Lorraine Hansberry. Join this workshop to create, explore and inspire words of change. Letters from Birmingham: Poetic Justice MLK used his writings and speeches to influence the hearts and minds of millions. Explore your unique voice and reflect upon the issues in our changing world. Talking Drum: Poetry Jam – All ages welcome! Poetry and music go hand in hand using “Martin’s Dream” as the theme.
