MTA Buys Cross Town Lines;Takes Over Operation Feb. 15

82 Buses, 26 Lines Totaling 350 Route Miles Are Involved;Cross Town Employees Are Welcomed into Service of MTA

WELCOMES are currently beingextended by MTA employees to em-ployees of the former Cross TownSuburban Bus Lines, Inc., and its twosubsidiaries, Cross Town Lines ofHuntington Park and Cross TownLines of Fullerton.

The 26 Cross Town lines beganoperations under the MTA emblemon Wednesday, Feb. 15, followingpurchase of the lines by the Authorityfor $275,000 plus some $25,000 formaterials and supplies. Included were82 buses and a garage in Whittier.

FIRST LINE PURCHASE SINCE 1958

The transaction marked the firstpurchase by the Authority of a transitoperation since the acquisition of LosAngeles Transit Lines, MetropolitanCoach Lines, and the MCL subsidiary,Asbury Rapid Transit System, in 1958,when MTA began service.

The purchase, approved at the Jan.meeting of the Authority, ' is a

major step forward in the MTA'sprogram of providing an integratedpublic transportation system in theLos Angeles Metropolitan Area," Ex-ecutive Director C. M. Gilliss toldthe Authority members.

CROSS TOWN SERVED OVER 20 CITIES

Covering some 350 route miles, theCross Town Lines served over 20Southland cities, the principal onesbeing Anaheim, Artesia, Bellflower,Buena Park, Compton, Downey, El

Segundo, Fullerton, Garden Grove,Hermosa Beach, Huntington Park, In-glewood, La Mirada, Long BeaceLynwood, Manhattan Beach, Norwalk,Redondo Beach, Santa Ana, and Whit-tier. The system also served PierpointLanding in Long Beach, and Marine-land at Portuguese Bend. Cross Towngrossed $700,000 in 1959.

CT EMPLOYEES PROTECTED

By terms of the sales contract, the70 Cross Town employees, including57 operators and 11 mechanics, vieregiven the option to come over to MTAwith full seniority rights.

C. C. Templin, assistant chief in-structor, was stationed at Cross Townheadquarters in Lynwood to assist allof that company's employees of alldepartments in making the transfer toMTA. He helped them fill out necjesary personnel records and applitions for passes on MTA lines, andanswered many questions about theMTA and its procedures.

OPERATION UNCHANGED AT PRESENT

Plans to integrate the Cross Townlines into MTA's operations are beingformulated. Until these are completed,there will be no change in fares,routes, or operating schedules, accord-ing to Mr. Gilliss. Effective Feb. 15the Cross Town lines were assignedto four MTA divisions — 2, 5, 9,and 12 — according to the areas serv-ed; and Cross Town operators were

MTA Buys Cross Town Linestemporarily divided among the samedivisions, according to George F.Goehler, general superintendent oftransportation. Beginning Feb. 18,when bidding for the system shake-upwas to start, the Cross Town menwere to place their bids along withthose of other MTA operators, accord-ing to seniority. Their permanent as-signments will be effective with thedate of the Shake-up on April 9.

CT OPERATORS INSTRUCTED

To instruct them in all phases ofMTA operation, instruction coacheswere placed at the four divisions onSunday, Jan. 29, between the hoursof 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

"Since the Cross Town men wouldno longer pull their coaches out andin to their accustomed Cross Townterminals, it was important to showthein how to pull in and out betweenthe MTA divisions and Cross Townlines," the assistant chief instructorpointed out. "They also had to beshown where the off-routes* are, howto operate MTA equipment, and whatprocedures are to be followed in theyards.

"Also, because the Cross Town menwere used to a type of farebox differ-ent from the type used by MTA, theywere taught how to make out fare-box cards and tripsheets, as well asother forms, such as fare refund cardsand courtesy cards. They were also

-termined."Mr. Powell also said that coaches

for service on Cross Towh lines hadbeen assigned to divisions "approxi-mately" as follows: Division 5, eigh-teen; Divisions 2 and 9, fifteen each;and Division 12, thirteen.

CT LINE NUMBERS CHANGED

Since the nwnbering of Cross Townlines from 1-26 conflicted with thenumbering of MTA lines, Cross Townnumbers were changed on Feb. 15 tothree-digit numbers by adding 100to the former line number, accordingto Mr. Goehler. Thus, Line 1 became101; Line 26 became 126, etc.

System Shake-Up Feb. 18 •I3IDDING for the general system

shake-up among operators is in prog-ress daily at Division 3), having beenscheduled to begin on Saturday, Feb.18.

For trafficmen, switchmen, and flag-men, the system bidding was held onThursday, Feb. 2. Trafficmen bid atDivision 21 (Sixth and Main Sts.);and switchmen at Division 20. Flag-men were contacted in seniority orderat their job locations by a representa-tive of the Chief Supervisor. Theysubmitted their bids to this repre-sentative.

History of Cross Town Lines"CROSS TOWN Suburban Bus Lines began in 1945 with two buses

operating in Lynwood only," stated James C. Carson, Cross Town presi-dent, a few days after the announcement of the purchase of the operationby MTA.

"Headquarters was at 11123 Long Beach Blvd., near Imperial High-way next door to where it is now.

"Five of the Carson family began the organization: my father, Dean;his brother, William K.; my brother, David M.; my sister, Nadeane(Mrs. Nadeane D. Hare); and myself," James continued. "All of usdrove buses some of the time, but we hired regular drivers from thevery beginning.

"In 1947 we extended service to Compton and began to build upquite a charter business. In 1948 we established the subsidiary CrossTown Lines of Fullerton, operating with one bus between Fullerton andAnaheim.

"Two years later my sister Nadeane set up another subsidiary, theCross Town Lines of Huntington Park, beginning with two buses.

"In 1953 Cross Town Suburban Bus Lines began a series of acquisitionsof small bus lines with the purchase of Southern Cities Transit, Inc.,which operated about a dozen buses in the Compton, Paramount, andDowney areas.

"In 1954 we acquired the Holbrook Bus Lines, which had 17 piecesof equipment and one or two spares operating in the Huntington Park,Bell Gardens, and Bellflower areas.

"The same year we also bought the Benton Bus Lines, which operatedseven buses in Whittier, South Whittier, Los Nietos, Pico-Rivera, andSanta Fe Springs.

"In 1957 we acquired the Whittier Bus Lines, Inc., with 12 busesoperating locally in that City.

"The following year we purchased Sunset Stages, with 21 buses servingthe Inglewood, Hawthorne, Hermosa, Manhattan Beach, and RedondoBeach areas.

"In 1959 we acquired the Southland Bus Line, with three busesserving the Long Beach, Anaheim, Hawaiian Gardens, and GardenGrove areas. That same year all the companies were consolidated into onecorporation, except for the Cross Town Lines of Huntington Park,which remained under my sister's control.

"Most of the operators and mechanics who started with us or cameover with the acquired lines are still with us. So are Guy Benton, whoowned the Benton Bus Lines; Jack Chapman, superintendent of theHolbrook lines; Orran Hughes, superintendent of Sunset Stages; andBill Bourne, who owned and operated the Southland Bus Lines."

Division 6, Ocean Park140 Operators Assigned to 83 Buses on Five Lines

Out of Ocean Park Provide Beach City Service

SERVING the beach cities south-west of Los Angeles, and connectingthem with each other, with Los Ange-les, and with intermediate points, areFive bus lines assigned wholly or inpart from Division 6, Ocean Park, atSunset Ave. and Main St. in theVenice area.

The five lines are Los Angeles-Re-dondo Beach Line 51, Los Angeles-Beverly Hills-Santa Monica Line 75S,Los Angeles-Culver City-Venice Line75V, Beverly-Sunset Blvd.-UniversityLine 76, and Wilshire-Sunset-TempleLine 83.

To fill the work runs on these lines,140 operators are assigned to Division

6, under the supervision of C.("Jimmy") Schulz, division transpotation superintendent. He is assisted bysix division clerks, two instructors,and a division stenographer.

Maintenance of the 83 buses as-signed to the division is at the direc-tion of William S. Bowles, divisionmaintenance superintendent, who su-pervises the work of a stall of 24 withthe help of two Leaders and a nightforeman.

Fourteen of these buses are storednightly at Redondo Terminal-Division,14 miles south of Division 6, for earlymorning pull-outs on Line 51 by 27(Text continued on Page 10)

operators, who seldom visit their homedivision. The pull-outs are protectedby Operator G. W. Demarest.

No maintenance crew is stationedat Redondo, but a mechanic, MyronLund, drives down from Ocean Parkin a bus at 2:30 each weekday morn-ing to check over the equipment. Ifhe finds a coach needing repair be-yond the capabilities of his kit oftools, he drives it back to the division,substituting for it the OK coach hehas driven down.

He checks tires and fuel, and as-signs buses with the most fuel to thelongest runs, as indicated by the sched-uled mileage he finds on the pull-outsheets he has secured from the divi-sion clerk at Ocean Park.

FOR OUTSTANDING COUR-TESY toward the elderly and infirmpeopk-, who rode his Alvarado Line41 schcdules, William F. Curry, ofDivision 2, was selected January Oper-ator of the Month.

He was chosenby a jury of threemembers of theBurbank Cham-ber of Commerce,after they hadread a number ofletters praisingvarious operatorsfor their courtesytoward the pub-lic.

"I have beenriding the #41 line for 14 years,"said the writer of the Letter commend-ing Mr. Curry, "and have been ren-dered many courtesies by your busdriver [Mr. Curry] . . . He is alwayskind, gentle, and polite."

A veteran of 26 years with MTAand its predecessors, the Operator was

arded $50 by the Authority for hisrtesy."On the Alvarado Line 41," he

commented, "there are many elderly,retired, and handicapped people whorequire a little patience. You have togive them a little more time to get onand off the bus than is necessary withyounger people—and they appreciatethe courtesy."

For 24 years Mr. Curry has livedin San Gabriel, where, on his largeproperty, he raises and Shows para-keets and cockatiels as a hobby.

Two New Bus Lines BeginIn West San Gabriel Valley

ON A 60-day trial basis, the Auth-ority began Jan. 30 operating busservice on two new lines in adjoin-ing areas of Alhambra, San Gabriel,South San Gabriel, and MontereyPark.

The new lines are entitled SanGabriel-Atlantic Line 11 and New

Ave.-Fremont Line 17. For theirroutes, see the map on this page. Theroutes follow closely those of two ofthree lines withdrawn by the FosterTransportation Co. last June.

Transfer privileges that residents hadnot before enjoyed are now allowed.Those traveling to and from points

New MTA Parent of '61CHRISTOPHER ANDREW, born

at 7:05 p.m. New Year's Day to Mr.and Mrs. Arthur Issoglio, is, in theabsente of all other reports, assumedto be the first child to be born to MTAparents in 1961.

Mr. Issoglio is a Vari-Type Opera-tor in the Schedule Department, withservice from January, 1959.

The first child for the Issoglios,Christopher Andrew weighed sixpounds, five ounces, and measured

Fares are 25c for one zone, 7c morefor a second zone, and 46c from any

point in the area to the above-men-tioned points in Los Angeles.

Service is every half hour between7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Mondaythrough Saturday. No Sunday or holi-day service is operated.

Transportation is provided an thetwo new lines by four scheduled6600-class (36-passenger) buses andone spare. Seven operators are as-signed from Division 9, El Monte.

The new lines were approved bythe Authority after thorough study ofthe needs of the area by the Office ofthe Chief Engineer.

THREE DEPARTMENTS movedom Division 2 to new quarters in

Macy property on Jan. 27. In-ved were the Electrical, Mechanical

Engineering, and Way and Structuresdepartmental offices. The building inwhich they had been located at Divi-sion 2 is being torn down.

The shifting of equipment andsupplies belonging to the Way andStructures and Electrical departmentsfrom Vernon Yard to Macy will bedone when the 120 buses now storedat Macy are moved to Divisions 1 and2, according to Assistant GeneralManager M. Edwin Wright. Reloca-tion of the buses depends on theprogress of improvements scheduledfor these divisions, he stated.
