DESCRIPTION
Instead of posting links, embed your multimedia files from YouTube or a streaming server into Blackboard so that students aren't confused by new windows opening outside of Blackboard. This tutorial was presented as part of the Fall 2009 eLearning Institute at Emporia State University. Embedding Multimedia into
the Blackboard Interface

Web-Hosted Video
Using the Embed HTML Coding
1. Navigate to the website from which you want your students to watch video. One example
would be YouTube. Other examples are: TeacherTube, DotSub, learner.org, etc.
2. Once you have found the video, look for a box labeled “Embed.” This will be located in a
different place depending on the site. The box contains HTML coding that you can copy and
paste into Blackboard.
3. In Blackboard, Add a New Content Item. Give it an appropriate title.

4. In the Content Information window, click the Toggle HTML Code button.
5. Paste the Embed HTML Code in the content box
6. Press the Toggle HTML Source Mode button again. You might see an outline of a box in the
window. You will not see the video at this point.
7. Click Submit. Click OK. Your screen should appear as follows:

Using a Streaming URL
Often a video will open up in a pop-up window. If you do not have the option to download, try looking
at the Properties.
1. Right-click on the video and go to Properties. If a direct URL appears, copy it.
2. In Blackboard, Add a New Content Item. Give it an appropriate title.
3. In the Content Information window, click the Add MPEG/AVI Content button.
4. In the window that opens, paste the URL into the
Specify Source URL box. Click Submit.

5. Click Submit.
ESU Streaming Server: The above step will work with video stored on the ESU Streaming Server. First,
obtain the correct URL for your video and copy it. Then, follow Steps 3 – 5 from above.

Web-Hosted Audio (podcasts, etc.)
Similar to Streaming Video, embedding audio is a matter of finding the direct URL or link to the audio
file. This can be done by right-clicking on an audio link and copying the URL.
1. Find the web-hosted audio file you want
to embed in your Blackboard course.
Right-click on the streaming link or the
download link. Click Copy Link Location.
2. In Blackboard, Add a New Content Item.
Give it an appropriate title.
3. In the Content Information window, click
the Add MPEG/AVI Content button.
4. Past the URL into the
Specify Source URL
box.

5. In the Audio File Added window, Click Submit.
6. In the Content Information window, you might see the outline of a box. Your audio will not
show up here. Click Submit one more time.
ESU Streaming Server: The above step will work with audio stored on the ESU Streaming Server. First,
obtain the correct URL for your video and copy it. Then, follow Steps 3 – 5 from above.

Embedding Presentation Files
There are a variety of ways you can convert presentation files into a movie or video format which can
then be embedded into Blackboard as described in the first section. However, this usually requires
additional software and or conversion tools. In this section, we will use a free tool located online called
SlideShare. It is very similar to YouTube in concept.
1. Go to http://www.slideshare.net/ and create an account.
2. Once you have an account, sign in. Click Upload. Note the file size and file formats it accepts.
3. Click Browse and Select Files. Select the presentation you want to share. Once it uploads you
will have the opportunity to edit certain options. Make sure you specify privacy settings, etc.
4. Click Publish. You will get a notice that says your file is being converted. Click on the link
provided to check the status. You may see a “Work in Progress” graphic next to your file.
5. Once it is complete, click Edit.
Check Allow embedding outside
SlideShare. Click Update.
6. After this updates, Click View
Presentation. You’ll notice this
interface looks similar to YouTube.

7. Find the Embed labeled box. Copy the contents.
8. In Blackboard, Add a New Content Item. Give it an appropriate title.
9. In the Content Information window, click the Toggle HTML Code button.
10. Paste the Embed HTML Code in the content box
11. Press the Toggle HTML Source Mode
button again. You might see an outline
of a box in the window. You will not see
the video at this point.
12. Click Submit. Click OK. Your screen
should appear as follows:
