Session Objectives• To recognize the common features and
differences in the R4L resources– Test the hypotheses “all databases, information
portals & library catalogues are fundamentally similar”
• To demonstrate that users can apply these generic ICT skills to other databases / search engines– Skills are transferable from one product to another
• To improve the users’ ability to use these products independently and confidently
Hypotheses
• “All web databases, information portals (gateways) and Library catalogues are similar”– User interface– Log in – Searching skills / Options– Search results– Collections / Resources– Media Outputs– Special Features– Miscellaneous
e.g. Web Interface – F Shape
Session’s Activity – 30 mins
• In mixed groups; test the hypotheses– Form a group consisting of participants who have
experience of using HINARI, AGORA / OARE and other products
– Brainstorm the similarities and differences; record your findings on the worksheet provided• Assign the role of a Chair• Try to identify several similarities & differences
– Report back to the group; 10 mins• Assign the role of a ‘Spokesperson’ • Use visual examples to illustrate your findings
