NOTES FROM THE CANTOR

THE IMPORTANCE OF NUSAH

by Hazzan Sanford Cohn

At The Eman-uel, we con-

stantly encourage congregational participation. As I’ve written and lectured on several occasions, this participation occurs in a few different forms. My focus in this column is the participation of congre-gants leading services.

What does it take to be a sh’liah/sh’lihat tzibur (literally, “messenger of the congregation”)? Obviously, one must be able to read the Hebrew prayers accurately. Our t’filot were written, for the most part, some 2,000 years ago. They have served as ex-pressions of our people’s ideals and theology for centuries. While it is sometimes acceptable to add to our liturgy, we certainly don’t want to change or take away from the stan-dard prayers as we find them in the siddur and mahzor.

Of nearly equal importance is chanting the prayers in the correct nusah. I use the word nusah in this context to mean the traditional me-lodic structure of each prayer service. Our Ashkenazi tradition that predom-inates in North America prescribes certain melodic structures for particu-lar t’filot or for entire services. Where or when these melodies originated is not generally known, but most are so well-established as to be called Misi-nai tunes, as if they were given at Mt. Sinai along with the law.

While I acknowledge the hy-perbole of this term, it points to the importance of chanting the appropri-ate melodies for each service. Each nusah lends a particular mood or feeling to our liturgy. One may ask, “What’s wrong with using the High Holy Day melody for the Bar’chu in a

ALAN FALK — ARTIST, GRAPHIC DESIGNER & ILLUSTRATOR

DISCUSSING HIS OWN JEWISH CONTEMPORARY ART WORKS

Originally from Manchester, England, Falk studied at the Manchester College of Art and Design, and was awarded the prestigious Granada Fellowship in Fine Art. His work was included in numerous international

exhibitions in London galleries. He also taught painting, drawing and printmaking.

Many of Falk’s paintings have Biblical references to the prophets since he looks at the Bible and religious thought as a moral and ethical guide, and as a mirror in which to reflect and make decisions about how to live.

His illustrated talk will also explore the profound influence of Jewish thought, values, Judaica text, and biblical writings on modern and contemporary art from the end of the 19th century to the present. The presentation focuses on various aspects of Jewish experience through the eyes of Jewish artists.

You don’t have to be art knowledgeable to enjoy this program. You will be inspired listening to Alan Falk’s interpretations. HUSBANDS AND GUESTS ARE ALWAYS INVITED TO JOIN US.

weekday ma’ariv service?” Experts in the field would answer with a ques-tion: “Would you wear a tuxedo to cook dinner?” My teacher and mentor, Hazzan Max Wohlberg, z”l, used to say, “Chanting the wrong nusah is like putting your dining room furniture in the bedroom. It may look nice, but it just doesn’t fit.” (These may not be his exact words, but is a very close approximation.) By the same token, imagine the shock and disappointment of the congregation if I were to chant the beloved Kol Nidrey to the melody for the Torah Service.

In order to encourage more congregants to lead our services, Moshe Pinchover and I are happy to provide recordings and private instruction. We are both committed to pre-serving our sacred musical traditions in the synagogue while promoting our synagogue’s goal of increased congregational participation.

GROGGERS AND MEGILLAH CASES ON DISPLAY IN MITNICK CASESby Gloria Bein, Exhibit Chairperson

loria, it would be nice if you had groggers and megillah cas-es on display,” Rabbi Philip Lazowski said to me a few months ago. Who am I to respond with anything but “That’s a great idea!” So it was that this exhibit was “born.” So it is that you will see close to 40 unusual groggers and megillah cases in the Rose, David and Ralph Mitnick cases opposite the Sanctuary. As you know, the items highlight the holiday of Purim; when Haman’s name is read in the reading of the “Story of Purim,” noises are made and rattles are clamored joyously. Grog-gers are the noise-makers. There are 21 different groggers in the cases from Persia, Poland, Russia, Japan, Israel, Mexico, Italy, Turkey, Holland, the Phillipines and the United States. Some of them are contemporary; oth-ers date back to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. You will see them in ivory, olive wood, metal, monkeypod wood, paper maché, bronze and copper. One of the most outstanding groggers is one in bronze from Rus-sia, dating from the end of the 19th century to early 20th at the time of the pogroms. The Russian Cossack is depicted with block and chain. He-brew lettering translates “Cursed be Haman; Cursed by the Evil Ones.” This grogger is believed to be the only one of two in the world. Another very impressive one from Persia is made of ivory. The writing on the two sides is by two different craftsmen. Megillah cases range from 400-500 years old to modern times. One is encased in old deerskin stitched by hand with animal hair. Another out-standing example of craftsmanship is an Israeli silver case with Yemenite designs. The engravings include grape clusters, palm trees, and Haman leading a horse on which Mordecai is sitting wearing the King’s finest cloth-ing, as per the Purim story. The case also bears coral and zircon semi- precious stones.

The megillah cases may be seen in Yemenite silver, olive wood, Pol-ish silver, Lucite, and red mahogany covered with leather. The Megillas (or megillot) originate in Morocco, France, Israel and Poland. Two of the megillot are very rare in that they are referred to as “Hamelech” megillot. Every column begins with “Ham-elech, (the King), referring to King Achashveros, husband of Queen Esther.

Another exceptional one in do-mestic sterling silver is 21” high with elaborate engravings. The inscrip-tion informs us that the megillah was purchased by friends of Alan Kent as a donation to Beth Hillel Synagogue. Most impressive is the fact that Kent was the person who inspired Rabbi Philip Lazowski to enter the Rab-binate. After years of study, Rabbi Lazowski served as Beth Hillel’s rabbi for 45 years, has written eight books, courses of study used in many He-brew Schools, and is now a member of our Emanuel Synagogue. The Judaic items in this exhibit are on loan from the Museum of Congregation Adath Israel in Middle-town, the Abraham J. Feldman

Museum at Congregation Beth Israel, Rabbi Gary Atkins of Beth Hillel, Dr. Jonathan Tress of Tikvoh Chadosha Synagogue, Rabbi Yitzchak Adler of Beth David Synagogue, and Rabbi James Rosen of Beth El Temple. Con-gregants of our Emanuel Syngagogue have contributed items as well. The exhibit will remain in the cases until the Passover season when it will be replaced by the Judaic wood carvings of the late Herman Braginsky of New Haven, courtesy of his daughter, Professor Dorothea Braginsky. Originally from Copen-hagen, Denmark, Braginsky started to carve wood after his retirement from his air-conditioning and refrig-eration business. He discovered the thrill of carving wooden Judaica, and soon found all of his work in a gallery on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. His works include yads, Torah Arks, tzedakah boxes, esrog boxes, dreidels, animals found in the Pirke Avot, grog-gers, havdalah candleholders, and cy-lindrical holders for megillah scrolls. One of his holders sold for $4,000. Although Braginsky never had any formal art training, his artwork can be found the world over. One of his fa-mous large mazzuzot is on the wall of the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem. Currently, his works are on exhibit at New York’s Yeshiva University Museum. Assisting Gloria Bein in the set-ting up of the current exhibit were Joy Platt, Renee Zetoff, Cynthia Blay-er, Susan Cohn and Selma Schwartz. Thanks also to Jeff Rudolph who made the signs.

Sisterhood and Brotherhood and all the wonderful volunteers for, once again, treating us to a wonderful Cha-nukah Carnival. We also thank USY, Kadima, Beit Sefer Tichon and our 6th and 7th graders for creating and running the booths. Everyone had a great time! We have several family programs coming over the next few months. On January 9, families of 4th, 6th and 7th graders will join for Havdallah. We will use spices that the 4th grade planted last spring in our Biblical Garden. On January 24, ADL will present Confronting Anti-Semitism to 7th graders and their parents and on January 31, Grade 3-5 families will learn about the Jewish organizations that serve our community. In February, we move beyond the boundaries of our school for a pro-gram that will see 6th and 7th grade families learning about the mitzvah of T’fillin during the World Wide Wrap on February 7th. We will present a Purim celebration for the entire con-gregation on Sunday, February 28th.

The library’s collection has recently been augmented by book donations by synagogue and community mem-

The Wu familyPaul HorowitzLibby Pinkes’s familyJay SmithFay Mannheim

With monetary donations, I have purchased some won-derful children’s books. One of the new Chanukah books, Hanukkah at Valley Forge by Stephen Krensky, sparked wonderful discussions. The author, using historical ac-counts indicating that George Washington knew about Chanukah from an encounter with a Jewish-American soldier from Poland, recreates the conversation the soldier and the general may have had. The discussion of the Mac-cabees’ revolt alongside the American War of Indepen-dence provided revealing parallels. I have also purchased a number of children’s books by Alison Greengard. In each book, she presents a story from the Torah, using the Hebrew text and a child-friendly translation on each page. The artwork by Carol Racklin-Siegel is engag-ing. Each book also has a glossary in the back so the books are good vehicles for learning Bible stories and Biblical Hebrew. You may borrow books on display and on the shelves by signing out the card and leaving it on my desk if I am not there. On Shabbat, you may use library books but please return them to the library or to the library mailbox in the office before you leave the building. Please do not take any books from my desk. See you in the library!

The proceeds from the silent raffle, di-rectly benefit our Youth Groups of USY and Kadima by providing these groups with funds for events and scholarships. I especially want to thank the Minya-naires, Brotherhood and Sisterhood for their time and financial assistance in making this an annual Fund-raiser for the youth group! Thank you as always to our fabulous custodial staff for the hard task of setting up the auditorium and for the cleanup.

ACTION / Tikkun OlamCommunity of

The Emanuel community con-tinues to respond to the needs

of others and exemplifies the con-cept that “it is better to give than to receive.” B’Yadeynu organized four hugely successful drives at the start of the 2009-2010 season. All four drives exceeded our expectations. We are proud to share that volunteer support from the congregation was excellent. Todah Rabbah Emanuel community for all that you have done to make others’ lives better. For the fifth year, Emanuel sent Chanukah care boxes to American Jewish soldiers, both men and wom-en, serving abroad. This year not only did soldiers serving in Iraq receive packages, but others that are stationed in Germany, Korea, and about to be deployed also were recipients. The response to the “Wish Lists” of items by Emanuel members, cards created by Hebrew School children, and holiday decorations donated by others made the holiday quite meaningful. Organizing and packing the various plastic bags to fill each box was completed by volunteers of all ages. For some this was a family endeavor. To all who helped make this task move so quickly B’Yadeynu expresses our appreciation. Requests

B’YADEYNU NEWS by Louise C. Rosenberg

for packages for soldiers are ongoing throughout the year. Please contact this committee if you are interested in sending notes or packages to soldiers overseas. Sadly, over the past year, the need by many in the greater Hartford com-munity for food has almost tripled. The response by Emanuel members was so great during the Thanksgiv-ing holiday that over 90 turkeys and 250 bags of food were given to both FoodShare and Gifts of Love. Thanks to generous donations from our con-gregation, we were also able to supply the Kosher Food Pantry with 25 ko-sher turkeys. In addition, cash dona-tions, large amounts of fresh produce and kosher items were also given to the Kosher Food Bank. Thanksgiving and the days afterwards were made easier by the kindness of Emanuel members. This committee will con-tinue to respond to the needs of the hungry in our community throughout the year. Please let us know if you would like to become more involved in these efforts. Our other fall activities included co-sponsoring an evening with Ethan Bronner, New York Times Israel Bureau Chief at the University of Hartford. We continue to look for thought-provoking speakers to bring to our community. B’Yadeynu and its members remain active in the CT

Coalition to Save Darfur and were present at the second annual Light on Sudan on the Shortest Day program on Dec. 21. Your generous contributions to B’Yadeynu’s discretionary fund allow us to help those in need as well as to provide educational programming to our community on important and timely subjects. Todah Rabah for your continued support! With winter upon us, B’Yadeynu is focusing on activities for this Spring including the Israel Solidar-ity Committee’s Discover Israel Day on Sunday, May 23rd from 10-12:00 a.m. This promises to be both an edu-cational and enjoyable event for fami-lies and congregants. More details will follow in the March newsletter. Please join other Emanuel syna-gogue members in leading Friday evening Shabbat services and sharing Shabbat joy with residents at the He-brew Home. Our next services will be January 15 and February 19. Services are from 7-8 p.m. For more informa-tion, please contact Pam Garry at 523-5254 or [email protected]. Your participation, children and adults, regardless of your knowledge of Hebrew or the service, will help to make it a warm-hearted and spirited service for everyone.

We have combined our January/February newsletters for many years now. In an effort to conserve paper, cut down on postage and more

importantly serve our congregation in a more efficient manner, we are now going to begin combining newsletters throughout the year. We will now be printing and sending the following issues:

January/February July/AugustMarch/April September/October May/June November/December

Please make sure to read these editions carefully to find out everything that is going on in your Emanuel community.

BROTHERHOODNews From The

BROTHERHOOD NEWS

by Michael Cohan

Emanuel Synagogue Brother-hood joins the World Wide Wrap on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010 On Sunday, February 7, 2010, Conservative Jews around the world will celebrate the mitzvah of Tefillin at their morning minyanim, joining thousands of others in the 10th annu-al “World Wide Wrap” sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC). We here at Emanuel Synagogue are thrilled to announce that our community will be part of the World Wide Wrap as part of the regular Sunday morning Minyan at 9:15 a.m. “If you’ve never done it, putting on tefillin looks hard. Yes, it’s harder than putting on your talit. But it’s not as hard as learning to ride a bike.” The mitzvah of wrapping Tefillin is one of the most basic Jewish rituals. Yet for many of us it is removed from our daily lives; somehow a relic of the past rather than a vibrant and vital spiritual experience. The Emanuel Synagogue Broth-erhood, Rabbi David Small, Cantor Sanford Cohn and Ritual Director Moshe Pinchover are working closely to encourage each of you to be on hand and participate in this mitzvah. We realize that for some of you it may be a new or unfamiliar experi-ence. There will be several people on hand to assist you in putting on tefillin. With a little practice you will become a regular. Join with our people! Participate in the Mitzvah! Experience the won-der and joy! For further information contact Don Miller at 860-233-0175. Like riding a bike, once you get the basics down, and practice a little, you’ll never forget.

SEE YOU AT THE ‘WRAP’!

NEWS FROM THE EMANUEL JOB CLUB

CREATING EFFECTIVE RESUMES

A resume should be accomplishment-oriented rather than responsibility driven. Think of the “PEP For-

mula,” Profitability, Efficiency, and Productivity. How did you contribute to profitability through increased sales? How did you contribute to efficiency such as through cost reduction percentages? How did you contribute to produc-tivity, such as through successfully motivating your team?

Use the PAR or SAR technique in which you describe a Problem or Situation that existed in a given job, tell what Action you took to fix the problem, and what the Result was. Remember to quantify (use numbers) and insert su-perlatives (the first, the only, the best) in your description. Make sure each accomplishment is relevant to the type of job you seek.

If you need help in listing your relevant accomplish-ments come join us at The Emanuel Job Club on Tuesday mornings.

EMANUEL VOICES IN THE COMMUNITY

The Emanuel choirs, under the direction of Cantor

Cohn, spread the message of Chanukah to the community. On Sunday morning, December 13, the Adult Choir performed at the Hebrew Home. Later that day, our Junior Choir sang at a Chanukah party at the St. Mary Home. The next day, they lit the Hanikiya and sang at the Crown Market, a first for our commu-nity. Yasher Koach and thanks to all who lent their time and talent to these important events.
