Box 441, Hoopeston IL 60942 [email protected] Former Hoopeston resident sentenced to 14 years in prison DANVILLE—A former Hoopeston man was sen- tenced Wednesday to 14 years in prison. Chase Miles, 28, formerly of 327 Maple St. Gilman, received the sentence as part of a plea agreement on the offense of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony, according to a press release issued by Jacqueline Lacy, Vermilion County States Attorney. Miles was also sentenced to five years in prison for threatening a public official, a Class 3 felony. The sen- tences will run concurrently, day-for-day sentencing credit applies to both and the entire sentence will be fol- lowed by two years of mandatory supervised release, the release said. He will receive credit for the 387 days he has spent in the Public Safety Building in Danville, where he has been since his arrest on 10 preliminary charges. He was unable to post the $25,000 cash bond set at his arraignment. Circuit Judge Nancy S. Fahey entered the sentence agreed to by Lacys office and the defense. Evidence presented in court established that on May 6, 2019, a Hoopeston police officer saw Miles walking on West Main. The officer, who knew Miles to be on parole, was informed earlier that day by another law enforce- ment agency that Miles was suspected to possess a fire- arm, an infraction of the law and his mandatory super- vised release. According to the release, Miles was compliant when the officer approached him and spoke to him. When he was told he was going to be searched - which he is re- quired to allow as a parolee - Miles became upset and resisted the officer, who ultimately tazed Miles to render him compliant. Miles was found to possess a loaded .380 handgun. During the arrest, Miles made numerous threats against the officer, including that he would kill the officer and his family, there would be repercussions for his arrest, and if was not himself, he would arrange for someone else to commit the threatened crimes. As the plea agreement required Miles to plead to two separate charges, Lacy wanted to send a strong message that not only will those who violate Illinois gun laws serve appropriate sentences, but those who do so and threaten the men and women of law enforcement like- wise will be held accountable for such conduct.
