WEDDIN SHIRE COUNCIL NEWS 29/08/2012

Grants featured strongly at the August Council Meeting. Roads and Maritime Services has issued approval for two grants for restoration of flood and storm damage in March 2012:

- $818,023 for local roads - $98,933 for regional roads.

These grants are in addition to approved restoration on the Mid Western and Newell Highways totalling $666,690, giving a grant total of almost $1.6M. These funds will be greatly beneficial to the shire in the next year or so, not only in restoring damaged roads, but also in contributing additional wages and contractor payments into the local economy. Roads and Maritime Services has also approved two grants of $150,000 each for ongoing widening work on Main Road 237 (Gooloogong Rd) and Main Road 239 (Barmedman Rd). This widening is part of Council’s programme of upgrading roads to B-double standards. Applications for heritage grants for 2012/2013 were assessed by the Heritage Committee and referred to the full Council, with seven applications totalling almost $18,000 being approved. Projects are located in Grenfell (3), Greenethorpe (2), Bimbi and Caragabal. At this stage grant funding is not available for another Main Street restoration project. Requests for assistance by a number of local organisations were dealt with at the August Meeting as follows:

- sponsorship of $200 and in kind assistance for the Grenfell Jockey Club’s “Loaded Dog” Handicap on 22 September,

- sponsorship of $250 for the Grenfell Show on 31 August, - sponsorship of $200 for the Greenethorpe Memorial Hall Committee’s “Tour de Greenethorpe” on 16 September, - in kind assistance for the Probus Club’s Regional Friendship Day in May 2013, - a letter of support for Stage 2 of the Cancer Care Western NSW accommodation centre at Orange.

The NSW Department of Health is currently inviting expressions of interest from members of the public interested in becoming members of the Local Health District Board. In the case of Grenfell this would be the Western Local Health District which is based in Dubbo. Application forms are available on the Department’s website (www.health.nsw.gov.au). Applications close on 12 September. The Heart Foundation has contacted Council seeking assistance in locating volunteers for their annual doorknock in September. If you can help, please contact the Foundation on 1800 552 255. The annual Sports & Recreation Grants are currently being advertised for community organisations. Application forms are available on the website www.dsr.nse.gov.au/grants/pfp.asp. Applications close on 3 September. Nominations are currently open for the 2013 NSW Seniors Week Achievement Awards in eight categories. Information concerning the awards is available on the website www.nswseniorsweek.com.au . Nominations close on 14 September. The Rural Fire Service will be conducting the 2012 Open Day on 23 September. Please contact your local brigade for further information. It appears that some local people are still confused about what is required to vote at the local government elections on 8 September. Specific questions should be referred to the Returning Officer (6382 7697). However the following comments are offered in the interests of simplicity and clarity:

• the ballot paper will have two columns, • the left hand column will contain the names of the members of the registered group, • the right hand column will contain the other 18 names, • electors must vote for at least 5 individual candidates, • electors may vote for as many additional candidates as they wish, • candidates may be selected from either or both columns.

It may be helpful for electors to determine whom they are going to vote for before election day, and take their list to the polling placed. Dates to Note 8 September - Local Government Election Day 20 September - Ordinary Council Meeting, 5.00 pm (tentatively) 16 October - Henry Lawson Festival Committee and AGM.
