Hi Master Gardeners,

Well, another very successful

plant sale is over and congrats to

all for a fine job. And special thanks

to all those extraordinary folks who

went above and beyond the call of

duty to ensure our success! We can

now enjoy LAPS (life after plant sale)

and resume our normal chores.

I especially enjoyed working (?) – My

job was to run off squatters - but my

reputation preceded me - no one tried.....

So I got to visit with many of you - which is something I rarely get to

do nowadays.

Many thanks to the Awards committee for a well organized

presentation of awards and congratulations to all who received

awards. Best of luck to those who will go on to compete for the state

awards. Hope all the rest of you were able to get signed up for our

June MG Convention in Benton - it will be fun.

Gotta go, need to get all those plants I got at the sale into the

ground. I know I should have a plan before I buy, but so far, that has

never happened....... See you at the May meeting!

Rain, Rain, Rain. I still have not been able to put in my vegetable

garden due to all the rain we have had. This July we will probably be

wishing it would rain, but for now I wish it would dry out. Thanks to

everyone who helped with the annual plant sell. Lots of hours are spent

each year on this project and it is truly amazing to see the turnout of

people each year. I am enjoying the Monday afternoons with our new

Master Gardeners, both getting to know them and showing them around

our office. I’ve been getting several calls about lawn weed problems

recently, but no major insect or disease problems are prevalent at this

time. Warm sunny days are not far down the road, so make plans to get

out and enjoy them.

Entergy Park Committee Sixteen energetic Garland County Master Gardeners met recently at Entergy Park where they prepared the flower beds for a late spring planting. They trimmed around the beds so the flowers would be visible. They weeded the beds, and relocated some of the plants. The weeds were bagged to be hauled to the city compost facility. Many compliments were given to the workers by the visitors and walkers in the park. Community Education

The next Brown Bag Lunch program will be Saturday, May 9, from 10:30-12:00 at the Garland Co

library. The topic is GARDEN ART YOU CAN CREATE. Please call the

library at 501-623-4161 to register.

A new event this year is the HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE SPRING INTO BLOOM GARDEN EXPO on Fri May 15 from

10:00-2:00 at the Balboa Pavilion in Hot Springs Village. The Education Committee will

participate with a booth. There will be garden information, displays, speakers and free

giveaways.

Ouachita Children’s Center Committee

The GCMG Ouachita Children’s Center Committee had their first workday of the year. We cleaned flower beds and spread mulch in the serenity garden. The

serenity garden is in the back of the building and is a fenced in area for the children to retreat

outdoors. It is in its beginning stages. Those present were Laura Young, Becky Pawelczak, Anne

Fulbright, Diane Murdock, Dorelle Hogan, Jan Hodges, Charlotte Anthony, and Cathy Dresel. The committee

will meet on the 1st Thursday of each month.

Triangle/Farmer's Market Committee

The Garland County Master Gardener’s Triangle/Farmer’s Market Committee finally got a

sunny day to meet and plant our summer annuals. When we arrived we were surprised to find that the city workers had already removed the old plants for us. We did a little

weeding and were ready when the new plants arrived. With 16 of our great committee working together we made quick work of the planting and then moved on to the

Farmer's Market. There we found lots of weeds, so while we weeded all 7 beds Daryl returned to the greenhouse and brought more plants. We planted the 4 beds there with

summer annuals. After we finished, 4 of us returned to the Triangle and added more plants. We hope you will drive by and see our work. Michael, Gene & Lin

City Greenhouse The Garland County Master Gardeners finally got to meet at the City Greenhouse. The weather has been a

deterrent to our regular work days. Since we had not been able to work there for some time, we had several

areas to clean up. In addition, we repotted the liriope that was removed from the COMO Square as well as

propagating coleus and Chicken Gizzard plants. A big thank you to all the members who assisted us.

GCMG Education Trip This year we will be going on Aug. 11-13 to St Louis. We will travel by bus, staying at the Drury Hotel at the Railroad Station in downtown St Louis. You can explore St. Louis on your own that evening. We will go to the Botanical Gardens on the morning of the 12th then we will come back to hotel around 3 and then return to the gardens for the Chinese Lantern festival that evening. This is free to GWG members; if not a member it will cost $26. We will return to HS on the 13th. To sign up while there are still spots contact Diane Daniel or Claudette Cooper.

Committee met recently to pull and weed

the beds of pansies and replace with

lantana and impatiens. The weather was a

bit tricky so we worked quickly to beat the

rain. The 16 loyal members that showed up

GEMS COMMITTEE These fabulous GEMS gave much needed help at Garvan Gardens after the recent hail storm. They worked pulling up the Tulips and then raked a lot of debris from this area of the Garden. COMO Committee

Today the COMO committee met to weed and replace the Fall plants with lovely new Spring plants. Thirteen MGs were there to plant lantana, marigolds, geraniums, and begonias. Even the Mayor drove by and applauded our work! Those present and working were Sue Bristow, Sharon Dent, Susan Deimel, Judy Fields, Jeff Finney, Burley Freeman, Karen Grisham, Rosemary Hany, Sue Jacobs, James Moore, Jr., Vicki Scheddel, Mary Ann Schnipper and Laura Young.

4H Banquet

I had the honor of attending the 67th Annual 4H Achievement Banquet on April 2nd at 6:00 PM. One hundred and eight meals were served so it was a rather large gathering. I have been to these meetings before but strictly as kitchen help rather than a banquet guest. So it was a new experience, however, I still had to help in the kitchen. I did have the privilege of presenting the first ever Garland County Master Gardener Scholarship Award. The recipient was Hannah Caple. Hannah attended Lakeside High School before transferring and graduating from The Gospel Light School. She was a cheerleader at Lakeside and class photographer at Gospel Light. Hannah is currently attending NPCC where she is on the Dean’s list with a current 3.58 GPA. She indicated a possible transfer to Henderson to continue her degree program in Wildlife Biology. Hannah lives with her parents and an older sister - also attending college - just south of Hot Springs off Highway 270. She currently has two part-time jobs. Her 4H project was in poultry. On a personal note: In my discussion with Hannah and her parents after the banquet it became quite obvious to me that Mom and Dad were footing the college bill as they were falling all over themselves thanking us for the scholarship. I think we really scored a home run with our first scholarship. Wayne

landscape which included weeding, trimming and

Southern Inspiration Garden Loretta West, first year Master Gardener, is one of

the 6 to 10 committee members who gather each

Monday morning at the Southern Inspiration

Garden located in Garvan Gardens to prune,

weed, and care for the plants. As noted in the

photo, this was a foggy work day; however, the

white tulips were in bloom and made a beautiful

contrast to the purple pansies.

Spring Social

The Master Gardener Spring Social will be held at the Elks Lodge on Saturday, June 20. Cocktail hour with beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres will begin at 5:00 p.m. Dinner, catered by Smokin' in Style will be served at 6:00 p.m. The entertainment for the evening will be music by Vince Duke, singer and Elvis impersonator. This event is free for all Master Gardeners. Guests will be $10.00, paid in advance. The sign up will begin at the Master Gardener meeting on May 21, 2015. If you are not able to attend that meeting, you may make reservations with either Barb Bradstreet (844-4475) harvbarbretired@aol.com or Jane Oliver (760-3884) chevy4035@aol.com ALL RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE OR CANCELLED BY JUNE 10. If you make a reservation and do not come to the event you will be expected to pay for the meal.

GCMG said, "Goodbye..." GCMG said goodbye and best wishes to Bob Byers at

a reception held for him at Garvan on April 13. Bob is

leaving Garvan to become the Director of the Fort

Worth Botanic Garden - a huge promotion and one

that is richly deserved. We are all sad to see him go,

and am sure many of us recall many wonderful walks

and talks with him and all the knowledge he shared

with us. GCMG presented him with this acrylic

paperweight to remember us by.

Xeriscape Committee

The Hot Springs Xeriscape met on a beautiful Saturday amidst projections of rain to clean up the flower beds and plant for summer color. Already the project is beginning to show beautiful spring blossoms! Members of MG present were Stephanie Ballard, Tricia Freeman, Burley Freeman, Karin Grisham, Anne Fulbright and Sunshine Spielvogle. Members of the Whitfield Garden Club also present to lend a helping hand were Pat Herring, Jennifer Jennings, Janis Carrigan, and Cass Adams.

Langston Legacy Garden Committee

Hot Springs April Yard of Month Article

The Garland County Master Gardeners chose the home of Katie and Hoot Gibson for April Yard of the Month. The rock home has a shaded front yard that features a large Dogwood tree and Crape Myrtles under-planted with Azaleas. This gives the curved brick lined flowerbed a backdrop for the pink tulips and white pansies planted along side native fern.(Katie loves her tulips and plants hundreds of them every year) Several red Japanese Maples are scattered around the yard to add depth and a focal point once the tulips have faded. At the corner of the driveway Grape Hyacinth surrounds a Red Maple while Purple iris and daffodils are showcased along one side with more native fern. As the season changes, Katie will fill in with annuals to keep the plantings lush and full. The Gibson's back yard mimics the plantings in the front with a brick seating area complete with a double swing and a trellis for added privacy. This is a lovely area to enjoy your evening and reflect on the day’s activity.
