HI ALL!It’s spring and the air is full of possibilities! The unveiling of our coming Elvis statue is drawing near! I’m so excited about this and I think it’s going to be one of the best and most detailed statues ever!

This is the 35th year of Elvis’ passing. An anniversary marked all over the world. I still find it absolutely amazing that Elvis is still so popular and his legacy thriving after so many years!

Late last year, I was very pleased to find out that something active is being done to try to save the Circle G Ranch. I heard of the Circle G Foundation and posted the press releases and info from them on the Graceland Randers website and facebook page whenever the campaign had something new to say. I was very honored when they approached me a few weeks ago, asking me to be an Ambas-sador for the cause. I accepted of course and hope you’ll all help this wonderful cause to save and preserve a historic Elvis site.

On another note, I recently heard that Cirque Du Soleil’s Viva Elvis is running for the final year. Such a surprise and such a shame! I guess, it’s not in great demand. I hope I have the chance to see it before it closes.

In this issue, we have some interesting insights into the Circle G Ranch and the campaign to save it, an article written by Circle G Foundation founder, Lesley Pilling. Our Memphis based friend, Sue Mack, has written an article about the new exhibit “Elvis on Tour” at Graceland Crossing. We also take a look at what an Elvis impersonator is and why some choose this as a hobby or way of life. We have also put focus on the up-coming Elvis movies – 4 in total! – And give you all the details we’ve been able to dig up.

2 NEW ELVIS BOOKS IN OUT Erik Lorentzen and Pål Granlund has announced that they on january 8th 2012 will release 2 new books, in a series called Elvis Presley In Hollywood.

The books will be called Jailhouse Rock: Frame By Frame & King Creole: Frame By Frame, and will both be containing more than 400 pages and off course a lot of photos, both new and old. Erik Lorentzen however, states that there will be no repetitions of the pictures from the FTD book King Creole, and that the pictures in these books are from collec-tions the authors have bought recently.

NEW GRACELAND LEGACY PROTECTORSHenrik Knudsen took a trip to the United States between-Christmas and New Year when Elvis’ first guitarist Scotty Moore was named Graceland Randers Legacy Protector. The appointment took place during guitarist’s 80-year birthday party at his home in Nashville. Scotty was there from the start in 1954, when he and Bill

Black (bass), along with Elvis recorded the first single “That’s Alright Mama“ at Sun Records in Memphis and later toured the southern states around the attempt to break through. Scotty was in 2011 appointed as No. 29 on Rolling Stone Magazine list “100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time”.

Gordon Stoker was a member of Elvis’ famous chorus The Jordanaires and recorded many songs and albums with Elvis, primarily in the early years. Gordon Stoker was named Graceland Randers Legacy Protector in his home in Nashville. Gordon recorded and performed with Elvis during the period1956 to 1970 and is probably the most famous of all the choirs,who worked with Elvis.


The two men - both of whom are legends in themselves -accepted the appointment with joy. Certificates of course, was handed over by Henrik Knudsen himself, who besides being the man behind Graceland Randers is a long lasting friend of both Scotty and Gordon. As they both put it: «We’ve known Henry for over 25 years»

Scotty & Gordon published officially as Graceland Randers Legacy Protectors of Elvis› 77-year birthday on Sunday the 8th January 2012 at an afternoonevent with music, food and birthday cake at Graceland Randers. «It’s an honor to have these icons among the Legacy Protectors, which among others also counts Volbeat, Jorgen de Mylius, Jimmy Jorgensen, and the legendary bassist Bob Moore and none other than Sir Cliff Richard,» concludes Henrik Knudsen.

ELVIS’ 77TH BIRTHDAY BASHWe kicked off our celebration of the King at 2 PM with coffee and cake, at 3:30 PM the music started and we rounded off with dinner at 5 PM. The live music was delivered by Sound of Memphis and there was served a 3 course mouth watering menu and - of course – a birthday cake.

NEW EXHIBITS AT GRACELAND IN MEMPHIS“Three new exhibits are in the process of being unveiled in and around Graceland (3717 Elvis Presley Blvd.). The first new addition gives an in-depth look at “Elvis on Tour,” the Golden Globe-winning documentary that follows Elvis on his April 1972 tour. Guests can see the trophy, stage clothing worn by Elvis, rare photos and video. The exhibit is located at Graceland Crossing (3717 Elvis Presley Blvd.).

“Elvis: Through His Daughter’s Eyes” opens Feb. 1 and is part of the Graceland VIP tour. Elvis fans can examine the


relationship between the singer and his daughter, Lisa Marie, through family photos,

home movies and items from her time growing up in the Memphis landmark.

“ICON: The Influence of Elvis Presley” exhibit opens March 1 at the Sincerely Elvis museum in Graceland Plaza — just across the boulevard from Graceland itself. The ICON exhibit celebrates the King’s status as a pioneer who influenced many modern artists, and gives fans a chance to see items including Bono’s MacPhisto suit, Sammy Hagar’s Red Rocker custom guitar and one of Bill Clinton’s saxophones.”Excerpt from The Boston Herald, by Bill Burke / The Travel Guy.

RADIO ALFA CELEBRATED ELVIS’ BIRTHDAYElvis-radio station, Radio Alfa, celebrated Elvis’ birthday on January 8, 2012. Like previous years, the hour between 6 & 7 PM there were played Elvis music exclusively under the headline ”Always Elvis”. A title previously used on Radio Alfa, where Henrik Knudsen has entertained the listeners with Elvis anecdotes and music by the King himself. The title was also used on the album that Radio Alfa & Graceland Randers released in connection with the opening of the tourist attraction in Randers. ”Always Elvis” continues on Radio Alfa and you are able to hear Elvis every Sunday at 6 PM. MARTHA ESPOSITO HAS SADLY PASSED AWAYMartha Esposito sadly passed away after having been ill with neoplastic meningitis for a long time.Our deepest condolances and thoughts to Joe and Martha’s family & friends.

ELVIS’ GRANDDAUGHTER ENGAGED? Alex Pettyfer & Riley Keough engaged? Elvis Presley’s granddaughter spotted wearing engagement ring while out with actor. The couple was first spotted together in October. Alex Pettyfer and Riley Keough co-star in the upcoming male stripper film ‘Magic Mike.

LISA MARIE ABOUT HER FATHERElvis Presley was always dressed for a performance.The ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ singer died in 1977 at the age of 42 and although his daughter Lisa Marie was only nine at

the time he passed away, one of her overriding memories of her father is how fanatical he was about his appearance.She said: ‘He was always fully, fully geared up. You’d never see him in his pyjamas coming down the steps, ever. You’d never see him in anything but ‘ready to be seen’ attire.

‘There can be a sort of cheesy take on him, which I don’t always love sometimes - you know, the later years and that whole thing with his white jumpsuit. Now I’m probably over it. But I mean it was kind of running wild for a while. It was a little bit cringe worthy.’

Lisa Marie - who has just recorded her third album - also revealed her down-to-earth father loved to spend time hanging out on his motorcycle with the locals in his Memphis, Tennessee neighbourhood.

She said: ‘Sometimes he would go and there would be a convoy and everybody would follow. He’d be going down Elvis Presley Boulevard and you would see these devices riding down the road, of all sorts.’

OVER THE LAST 30 OR SO YEARS, A LOT OF MOVIES HAVE BEEN MADE ABOUT ELVIS PRESLEY. SOME WITH MORE SUCCESS THAN OTHERS. I WAS CURI-OUS AS TO WHAT HAP-PENED TO THE VARI-OUS ACTORS IN THESE MOVIES, SO HERE ARE SOMETHING REGARD-ING THE MOST MEMO-RABLE MOVIES, WHILE WE WAIT FOR THE ULTIMATE MOVIE.

"ELVIS THE MOVIE" from 1979 was the first movie about Elvis. Contrary to Europe the movie was not shown in cinemas in the US. The movie got the highest audience ever in the US and was produced by John Carpenter. Kurt Russell starred as Elvis. Kurt Russell had actually had his acting debut in the Elvis movie "It happened at the World’s Fair" from 1963, when Russell was just 12 years old. He is the kid that kicks El-vis over the shin. As a child Russell was

associated with the Disney-corporation and when his contract expired in 1970 he played baseball in Minor League for a period of time. Kurt Russell is the only "Elvis" actor to have had a long and prominent career. Besides the 1979-movie Russell also wore a white jumpsuit in the movie "3000 Miles to Graceland", where he played a bank robber in a casino in Las Vegas. A funny detail is a scene where a fan at an Elvis Convention in Las Vegas asks Russell, who’s dressed in a jumpsuit, to sign something from "It happened at the World’s Fair". Kurt Russell's father, Bing Russell, played Vernon Presley. Kurt Russell actually married Shelly Winters, who played Pricilla in the movie. They divorced a few years later and Russell is married to Goldie Hawn today. I still wonder why the movie was never shown in cinemas in the US.

"This is Elvis" from 1981 is still the most worked-through movie ever and a true masterpiece. They used original scenes with Elvis and only needed actors in a few scenes. Paul Boensch, who played Elvis at age 10, was never heard of again. Canadian actor David Scott, who played Elvis during the Sun years, had a very short career with only a few supporting roles. Scott died in Montreal, 1993. Johnny Harra, who played Elvis at age 42, was an Elvis impersonator who only participated in this movie. Harra died on March 30th, 2011. Dana Mackay, who played Elvis at age 35, was never heard of again.

The movie "Elvis and the Beauty Queen" was released in 1981 starring Don Johnson as Elvis. It was absolutely a terrible movie of the worst kind. Don Johnson later became a big eighties’ icon as Crokett in the television series

“Miami Vice”. Johnson is still an active actor today.

" H e a r t -break Ho-tel" from 1988 was a charm-

ing little fairytale that definitely was not realistic. David Keith, who played Elvis, started his career in 1978 with a sup-porting role in “Happy Days”. He is still an active actor today. The girl that Elvis falls in love with is played by Tuesday Weld, who actually starred with Elvis in "Wild in the Country" back in 1961.

1988 was also the year when the movie version of Pricilla's

book "Elvis & Me" was shown on TV. Dale Midkiff played Elvis. The book is fascinating but I do not think the movie adaptation was very successful. Dale Midkiff has had an active television and big screen career since 1985 and many of us probably remember him best as Louis Creed in Stephen King's "Pet Cemetery". There’s a mistake in the movie. A scene where Elvis and Pricilla visit Las Vegas in the mid-1960s and you can see the Landmark Hotel in the background. This hotel was not constructed until 1969.

"Elvis" (the television series) began in 1990 and it was an excellent run-through of Elvis in the years 1953-1955. The series consisted of 13 episodes and was also shown on Danish television. The role of “Elvis” was played by actor Michael St. Gerard and he is probably the best Elvis look-a-like to date. Gerard also starred as Elvis in the movies "Great

Balls of Fire" and "Heart of Dixie", both from 1989. You may also remember him as Chris Suiter in 4 episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 from 1991. In 1994 Gerard ended his career as an actor and is now a priest in Harlem, New York. Millie Perkins played Gladys Presley in the same series. Millie Perkins was also in "Wild in The Country" with Elvis in 1961. This series was sadly never released on VHS or DVD.

In 2005 CBS aired a 173-minute long, 2-part television miniseries about Elvis. I had expected a lot from this one but I was very disappointed. Elvis' story is a fairytale in many ways but a lot of things were left out which ruined it once again.

The role of “Elvis“ was played by an otherwise excellent actor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but the magic was not there. More than 300 Elvis look-a-likes had participated in the casting but they chose Meyers, who was not even pres-ent at the casting himself.

The only thing I think was nearly perfect was Rose McGowan as Ann-Margret. There’s also a small mistake in this movie. Tom Parker sits at his desk in 1962 and there are a lot of records on the shelf behind him. One of them is "Flaming Star" which was not released until 1968.

FORTY YEARS ago in April of this year, the last Elvis movie was filmed… “Elvis on Tour.” This documentary which was filmed after the 1970 suc-cessful “Elvis: That’s the Way It Is, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, followed Elvis on a 15-city tour comprising of 19 shows in April 1972. It unveiled what it was like to go backstage and on the road with Elvis and his crew. “Elvis on Tour” would be a close “front row” look of an Elvis tour with scenes that had never before been seen by Elvis’ fans. The directors were given total access to Elvis. They filmed him backstage, in his dressing room and while he traveled

in his private chartered jet and limos. The working titles for the film were “Sold Out” and “Standing Room Only”, but the title finally settled on was “Elvis on Tour” which more accurately depicts what the documentary is about.

The tour started April 5, 1972 in Buffalo, New York and concluded in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 19th. The other cities on the tour included Detroit, MI; Dayton, OH; Knoxville, TN; Hampton, VA; Richmond, VA; Roanoke, VA; Indianapolis, IN; Charlotte, NC; Greensboro, NC; Macon, GA; Jacksonville, FL; Little Rock, AR and San Antonio, TX. In four of the cities he

performed two shows; one at 2:30 in the afternoon and the other in the evening at 8:30pm. Those four cities were Knoxville, TN; Hampton, VA; Macon, GA and Jackson-ville, FL. In all nearly one quarter million fans saw Elvis perform during this tour.

The directors of the film, Robert Abel and Pierre Adidge filmed the first concert (Buffalo, New York) not to be included in the documentary but to identify what the best possible camera angles would be to film Elvis on stage. It also gave them insight as to how Elvis performed and what to expect

during filming. The concerts that were actually filmed for the documentary included Hampton and Richmond, VA; Greensboro, NC and San Antonio, TX. These concerts were chosen particularly because the concert halls/buildings were the most adequately set up for filming and sound recording. Roanoke, VA and Dayton, OH were two other cities that had footage included in the documentary; however none of the concert footage from these two cities was used in the film.

Elvis on Tour was the only Elvis film to receive any award. It received the Golden Globe for Best Documentary of 1972. The award was presented at the

30th Golden Globe Awards held on Janu-ary 28, 1973. Robert Abel and Pierre Adidge filmed and directed the docu-mentary and Pierre Adidge’s Golden Globe Award is currently on display in the “Elvis on Tour” exhibit at Graceland.

What is spectacularly notable about the documentary film is that it was released by MGM on November 1, 1972 and was such a tremendous success at the box office that it recouped all production costs after only 3 days in movie the-

aters. The total production costs were $1.6 million dollars of which $1 million was Elvis’ fee. It is rare that documen-taries are a box office success, but it went on to reach the #13 spot on the Variety National Box Office charts.

In the film we see Elvis in concert as we have before. What is different is seeing Elvis and his entire entourage of body-guards and musicians during rehearsals, backstage in his dressing room, after-the-concert jam sessions and seeing the everyday candid behind-the-scenes mo-ments. Of particular interest is a scene in which Elvis looks pensive and retrospective after the concert in Florida. Devoted fans and their reactions were filmed catching glimpses of Elvis’ plane arriving or Elvis leaving his hotel or the concert venue.

Elvis on Tour is a definite must-see film for any Elvis fan. This film portrays such en-ergy that you almost feel like you are there. Newspaper headlines after each concert expressed the thrills of the concert… Buffalo, NY: “Presley Magic Still Strong As Record 17,360 Turn Out”. Detroit, MI: “One King and 16,000 Cameras… Ah, That Elvis – He Never Changes”. The De-troit newspaper described Elvis taking the stage: “Suddenly the house lights dimmed to the sound of a piercing collective sigh. The band began playing the fanfare. A vi-sion appeared bounding on the stage with a white sequined jumpsuit… a red scarf wrapped loosely around the neck and a flowing cape. The vision was greeted by popping flashcubes, lit simultaneously and repeatedly like wild bolts of lightning.” In the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union they

stated “Elvis Presley was introduced by the music of 2001: A Space Odyssey… For every tenth second passed, an enormous crew of cricket sounds accom-panied the fire-fly action of a thousand instamatics. This would go on for the entire show: the temporary blindness Elvis must have experienced never razed him.” The San Antonio TX paper said “Presley is a showman, a good one, and Tuesday’s audience reflected his continuing appeal.” In honor of the 40th anniversary of this documentary film and Elvis’ 15-city tour, Elvis Presley Enterprises has unveiled an “Elvis on Tour” exhibit located at Graceland Crossing across from the Graceland mansion. This exhibit examines in depth the “Elvis on Tour” documentary about Elvis’ April 1972 15-city tour. This exhibit pres-ents many artifacts including Pierre

Adidge’s Golden Globe Award (on loan from Jeannine Adidge), concert post-ers, Elvis’ jewelry, concert and personal clothing, and some rarely seen photos. Elvis’ concert jumpsuits are highlighted in the exhibit on rotating platforms allowing the fans the opportunity to see all aspects of the jumpsuits. In ad-dition to the rarely seen photos, there is about a 10-minute video of Priscilla, Jerry Schilling, Joe Esposito and others talking about Elvis. This video was shown to audiences at the special theater showing in July 2010. It was also shown at the Orpheum Theater for the Elvis on Tour showing during Elvis Week 2010.

Elvis wore seven different jumpsuits for this tour and five of them are on display in the exhibit. The Blue Nail and Red

Pinwheel are in private collections and are not included in the display at Grace-land. The White Fireworks Suit is on loan from the private collection of Larry and Judy Moss of Memphis, Tennessee. All of the other jumpsuits Elvis wore on this tour are in Graceland’s collection. Below are listed the seven jumpsuits along with a brief description of each.

1. Blue Nail – A light blue jumpsuit with matching white lined cape and white lined kick pleats.

2. Red Pinwheel –A red jumpsuit with matching white lined cape and white lined kick pleats. Also known as the Burning Love Suit or Red Matador. This is one of three "pinwheel" suits Elvis had; the Black Pinwheel and the White Pinwheel.



3. White Pinwheel – A white jumpsuit with matching red lined cape and red lined kick pleats. Also known as the White Matador or Red Lion. Elvis wore this suit in four of the Elvis on Tour concerts: Detroit, Roanoke, Macon and San Antonio and was featured on one of the posters.

4. White Fireworks – A white jumpsuit with matching light blue lined cape and light blue lined kick pleats. Also known as the Star Suit. Elvis had two other "fireworks" suits; the Black Fireworks and the Royal Blue Fireworks. Elvis wore this suit at five of the Elvis on Tour concerts.

5. Snowflake –A white jumpsuit with matching black lined cape and black lined kick pleats. Also known as the Spectrum Suit. Elvis wore this suit at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

6. White Pyramid –A white jumpsuit with matching yellow lined cape and yellow lined kick pleats. Also known as the White Diamond/Pyramid. This suit was worn by Elvis in Jacksonville, FL.

7. Owl Suit – A royal blue jumpsuit with matching silver lined cape and silver lined kick pleats. Also known as the Royal Blue Fireworks. Graceland identifies this suit in the exhibit as the “Purple Owl”. Elvis also had two other "fireworks" suits; the Black Fireworks and the White Fireworks. He wore this at the Greensboro concert.

To sum it all up, Elvis on Tour was aptly described in the Indianapolis Star “He came, he sang, he conquered. Who? Why the man in the blue jumpsuit, of course… But those who aren’t aware that the Concert of the Year was held at the Coliseum last night, we’d like to pass along the word that the King lives.”Elvis Lives!

HELLO, I AM Lesley Pilling Founder and Director of The Circle G Founda-tion. In August 2010 my husband Jim and I visited the Circle G ranch for the first time and were heartbroken to discover how it was being allowed to literally rot by the roadside. I vowed then and there to do my utmost to save this significant and important piece of ‘Elvis’ history and on my return home I launched The Friends of Elvis –Save The Circle G Campaign and began to spread the word. Within a short space of time I heard from fans from every continent on the globe and also from some of Elvis’ friends, who realised how important it is to save the ranch. Most of you will know that the ranch is where Elvis could escape to from being ‘Elvis Presley’ for a short while. It is where he spent time with friends and family enjoying his love of horses and the outdoors in fact the place was so special to him that he spent a portion of his honeymoon there. It is a significant piece of his story, a place that was important

to him at a time in his life that was full of change – a newly married man, expectant father and an enter-tainer at a vital crossroads in his career. And despite what some have said, Elvis continued to care about the ranch long after he’d sold it. I have that on very good authority from several sources that were close to Elvis. In August 2010 the ranch had been up for sale for just a few months but the inflated asking price of $6.9 million USD meant that it was un-likely that a buyer would be found quickly. In the months since then the price has been dropped to $3.9 million USD (ap-prox. £2.6 million GBP) – and although that is still above the going rate for land/property in the area, it does make find-ing a buyer more plausible. Our vision for the ranch is to see it open as an attraction for Elvis fans and non-

fans alike and also provide leisure facili-ties for the local community in Horn Lake Mississippi. Our aims and objectives are to sympathetically and tastefully restore the site to how it was when Elvis knew and loved it; enabling visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the site, just as Elvis did, by providing walking trails, horse riding (hopefully creating a safe haven for res-

cue horses) and other outdoor activities (all with easy access for the disabled). We envisage the inclusion of a small museum and shop, along with a longer-term plan to provide a small amount of accommo-dation (perhaps in the form of log cabin around the lake) for short-term vacation lets. Many fans have said that they would like to see the site made available to the disabled and to children from disadvan-taged backgrounds, giving them the op-portunity to learn about and appreciate the countryside and all it can offer. In the 18 months or so since I began this campaign to save the Circle G, the one thing that stands out to me is the Dedication of Elvis’ fans from all over the world and the way they have united to support the cause. We’ve seen major milestones – the meet-ing in Memphis Sept 2011, newspaper and TV coverage, messages of support from the ‘Elvis’ world and perhaps the most significant – on January 8th 2012 the launch of The Circle G Foundation and shortly after that our new improved web-site www.circlefoundation.co.uk went ‘live’. The Circle G Foundation is the next solid step along the road to saving the ranch and as a non-profit organisation we can take our campaign to the next level. Our

prime objective is to widen our search to find an investor with the insight (and funding) to secure the future of the Circle G and hopefully to work with us to realise the potential of the ranch and what an amazing place it could be. The Circle G Foundation is a real team ef-fort. We have two Management Teams; I head generally run the Foundation and also head up the UK team with my

husband Jim. In the US our Team Leader is Sue Mack. Many of you will know Sue, and for those of you who don’t, she is the partner of Mike Freeman and to-gether they run ‘Mikes Memphis Tours’.

After a very successful recruitment drive we now also have 19 Ambassadors in Denmark, UK, USA, Australia, Ireland and Canada, who work really hard to publicise our organisation, fundraise and generally do all that they can to make sure the Circle G Foundation’s profile is gaining prominence and recog-nition worldwide. We are always looking to recruit more, so if you are interested, please get in touch with us at [email protected] for more details.

So what’s next? Well, I said at the beginning of the year that I wanted 2012 to be THE year for the Circle G and I have to say that things are moving along nicely. Obviously this year is a huge year for Elvis fans and I believe that we have to do all that we possibly can to harness that enthusiasm, and also the raised press interest in Elvis, to our benefit.

At the end of February we started an on-line petition aimed at having The Cir-cle G included on the National Register of Historic Sites. We are targeting the petition at Senator Thad Cochran, The Mississippi State Senate and the Missis-sippi State House of Representatives. We don’t just need hundreds of signa-tures… we need thousands, so please add your name and help us along the way. We have written ‘back-up’ letters to Senator Cochran and also to the Missis-

sippi Development Authority. If we can engage with them it can only increase our chances of success. We have received a reply from Senator Cochran stating that if our initial application is successful then he will provide us with a letter of support.

• We are planning some fundraising events – again check the website for details. • We also have some tentative plans for Elvis Week in Memphis. I would absolutely love to bring together

hundreds of supporters to create an event that would really make people (and the press) sit up and take notice!

This disc is the “lost al-bum” of Presley imports. It has a long history and would likely never have been released if not for the many requests over the years. The version

of “Loving Arms” here is worth the price of admission. Never has Elvis been so up-close and personal, as if he’s singing in your living room! The tracks have been carefully selected to retain the “Stax sound.” At the time, this Elvis session was an unique blend of country, funk, gospel and

Elvis’ 1973 “Summer Festival” was his 9-month long stand in Las Vegas since July-August 1969. Reviews noted his excess weight and half-hearted perfor-mances. But, despite bad press,

health issues and a 1967 marriage that would soon end in divorce, Presley slowly warmed to his always-thrilled fans. At both shows Elvis welcomed the presence of Lisa, his beloved daughter, then just five and-a-half years old. Obviously, she provided additional inspiration for her dad. In fact, there are several rare highlights, including “A Big Hunk O’ Love,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Release Me” and “How Great Thou Art.” And for fans of legendary bass player Emory Gordy, Jr., these would be among the last dates he would ever do with Presley. Both the Dinner and Midnight sets are taken from a 24-bit digital transfer of the first-generation copy of a privately recorded 120-minute cassette.

THE HILLYBILLY CAT LIVE

A Graceland Records digipack with gorgeous photos and liner notes plus technical information. It features one of the best shows from his August Las Vegas engage-

ment, namely the August 23rd, 1970 dinner show, taken from the original unspoiled – a tremendous audience recording! This recording was partly released in 1970 on vinyl as “The Hillbilly Cat, Live”, but it was a combined version of 2 different shows, August 23rd dinner and 24th Midnight show. The sound quality was great for the time. Rumors were that a profes-sional recording (soundboard) was used. This is not the case; a stereo tape recorder was used directly in front of the center stage. Graceland Records was lucky enough to work with the original audiocassette. These days the possibilities to improve an audience tape are far greater than they were in 1970, so this recording now sounds significantly better.

May 11, 1974. The first re-lease of this concert was re-leased through the collectors label FTD in combination with a book about the concert. Annoyingly the speed ran obviously too slow and the pitch was also wrong. When it

was released as a single CD there was hope that FTD worked on the show for the better, but once again nothing was done to correct the faults. So here you can hear the show for the first time at the correct speed and the correct pitch.

– WHY?

ELVISLOTS HAVE been said and written about Elvis impersonators and ETAs (Elvis Tribute Artists). We all have an opinion. Some think you shouldn’t imi-tate at all, for others it’s just another way of keeping the King’s memory alive. We give you a closer look at what it means to be an impersonator and why some choose to impersonate the King.

Wikipedia description of an ”Elvis Trib-ute Artist”/”Elvis Impersonator”:”An Elvis impersonator is someone who impersonates or copies famed Ameri-can musician Elvis Presley. Professional Elvis impersonators, commonly known as Elvis tribute artists (ETAs), can work all over the world as entertainers, and such tribute acts are in great demand

due to the unique iconic status of Elvis. There are even a number of radio stations that exclusively feature Elvis impersonator material. While some of the impersonators perform a whole range of Presley music, the raw 1950s Elvis and the later 1970s Elvis are the favorites. There are many Elvis con-tests, festivals and other events held

across the world celebrating Elvis and his many impersonators.”

Elvis impersonation constitutes imitating his visual image by wearing an Elvis wig and sideburns, putting on a rhinestone-studded jumpsuit and as-sorted jewelry and singing just like him.

According to the Professional Elvis Im-personators Association there were 170 impersonators when Elvis died in 1977 and more than 200,000 globally today.

Just to break it down for you, there are different types of impersonators:

• The Look-alikesWho concentrate mostly on the visual elements, such as Elvis’ fashion, using accessories, wigs, costumes and jewelry

• The Sound-alikes. Who concentrate on changing their voice to sing or talk like Elvis. Examples of this type include country artist Ronny McDowell and Rock’n’Roll artist Ral Donner.

• Combination. Who use both the visual and aural meth-ods. Actor Kurt Russell was an example of this type in 1979 with his lead role in the TV-movie “Elvis” and in 2001 with his lead role in the big screen movie “3,000 Miles to Graceland”.

There are also different levels of impersonation:• Professionally (ETAs) Full-time Elvis impersonators who perform for a living.• Amateur Enthusiasts or people who impersonate Elvis for a hobby.• Fun / Comedy Usually done as part of a parody.

It is a little known fact that Elvis imper-

sonations began all the way back in the mid-50s. When Elvis’ career began to shape in 1956 and his popularity re-ally started to rise, a young Jim Smith of just 16 years of age, began jump-ing on stage and imitating Elvis. Jim’s physical resemblance to Elvis and his mannerisms caught the attention of a Canadian DJ named Norm Pringle, who had been playing "That's All right Mama" and "Heartbreak Hotel" on the radio. Norm featured Jim several times on his regular TV show, TV HOUSE PARTY SHOW, CHEK-TV, Victoria, BC, Canada. Jim always took the stage with a guitar, although he never learned to play and only pretended to sing along with the music – he couldn’t sing either. Jim is still the world’s first known Elvis Imper-sonator. He still lives in Victoria, Canada.

The first really significant Elvis impersonation was perhaps in March 1970, when an American protest singer by the name Phil Ochs took the stage at Carnegie Hall in an gold lamé suit, made by Elvis’ costumer, Nudie Cohn. Elvis’ own favorite impersonator was Andy Kaufman, who did a surpris-ingly proficient impersonation as a part of his act in the mid-1970s. The only Elvis Tribute Artist that Elvis him-self ever went to see was Bill Haney.

During Elvis’ lifetime impersonators emerged from small town talent competitions primarily, but it was not until after his death in 1977 that

impersonating Elvis became popular in the mainstream.

Sometimes, it might seem as if some imper-sonators have difficulty

in drawing the line between their per-formances as Elvis and their personal lives. As if they draw the “Elvis” more and more into their own private char-acter. Sometimes, it’s the audience that finds it hard to draw the line.

A very well-known sound-a-like Jimmy “Orion” Ellis became know for his voice’s resemblance to Elvis’ brought him success like he hadn’t known before… But only when he put on a mask. As Jimmy Ellis, he couldn’t make it. As a mystery guy - after Elvis’ death – Hidden behind a mask, with a

voice so close the King’s, he became popular and the focus of a huge media attention. When he took off his mask and revealed his true identity the media attention disappeared just as quickly as it came.

But why choose to impersonate Elvis on any level? And what thoughts go into an impersonator’s performances? We have allied ourselves with Charles Stone (Elvis’ former Tour Producer), Kraig Parker (renowned ETA), Henrik Busborg (one of the best ETAs in Denmark), and Graceland Randers’ Henrik Knudsen to try to clarify things on this point.

Elvis’ former tour producer, Charles Stone, has been travelling around the world with Elvis tribute shows for the past six years. The show “Elvis For-ever”, with ETAs Ryan Pelton and Kraig Parker, recently toured Denmark and Charles talked about ETAs, Elvis and the “Elvis Forever” show in particular:

“I can say we have the two best at what they do. And these guys are so good at what they do. They are not trying to be Elvis - please understand that. They just are so talented that they can present a show that if you didn’t see Elvis alive, this is as good

as it is going to get.” Stone continues, “and it is not only in the way the two performers Ryan Pelton and Kraig Parker sing, that makes one believe the King actually is alive. It is also in the show they deliver; making the au-dience - not the least the female part of it - feel like they have actually been close to their idol himself. Just like it was when Elvis was still alive.”

For Kraig Parker, there is something magical in performing the King's music; “There’s a lot of emotion when I go on

to the stage. Preparing for the show is one thing, but when you actually step out on the stage and the music is pumping and the crowd is cheering there is like electricity that you can’t explain. And I felt that from the first time when I first did my first Elvis im-pression for a small audience. When I left the room I turned and looked at my friend and said: “Man, what is happen-ing there?” I felt something that I never had felt before, and it was just amazing that you can go out and do music by someone else and still feel that and hopefully the audience can feel it as well; it’s just an electrical, magical mu-sical power.” Parker continues: "It is a big challenge. It is big shoes to fill out, but I feel like I am a good entertainer and people really seem to appreciate what I do. A lot of what comes across as me as well as Elvis Presley, so I try to give myself over to the crowd when I am in a show as well as give Elvis Presley. And as long as I do that - and

not overdo it – a lot of guys overdo it and I think you can go too far, but there is a good saying: Less is more, so I just do my best interpretation and have a lot of fun and you are going to win every time."

It is not only the fans that have an interest in the ETAs. Elvis Presley Enterprises host the search for the ”Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist” each year. Judges at the venues during both the preliminary rounds across the U.S., Canada, Japan and Australia and the

semifinals and finals look for the "best representation of the Elvis legacy" in vocals, style, stage wear and stage presence. The best overall performer will be named the "2012 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist."

One of the best ETAs in Denmark, Henrik Busborg, has won the title as the Danish ETA Championship twice, competing against 10 other Danish ETAs. When Busborg is not perform-ing as The King of Rock’n’Roll, he is a teacher at a local school. He lives with his wife and 3 children in Odense, Den-mark and performs as Elvis Presley several times a week, sometimes even more than once a day. He performs both with his band, as a duo with his bassplayer, and sometimes just with his guitar.

He recently talked to Elvis Unlimited about impersonating a rock star that died 35 years ago: “It’s not a glamor-ous life to be an ETA. There is no pink Cadillac waiting for you.”

Busborg has several replicas of the King’s jumpsuits

“You can easily wind up paying DKK 20,000 for just one suit. It’s not a cheap hobby to be Elvis.

Busborg tells us it’s a matter of attitude when you’re learning to wear a jumpsuit

”You have to believe in what you do, be comfortable in the character. And most importantly, you have to do it with respect for the King, respect is the keyword,” Busborg says.

”My banker probably thinks I’m a little foolish sometimes, especially when I need to borrow more money for new jumpsuits,” Henrik laughs. He also shares how difficult it can be for the family when people call asking for Elvis and not Henrik – he says, “it can be difficult to control”

Busborg thinks that if you want to be-come an ETA you must first decide which Elvis you want to be: Elvis in the fifties, lots of movement and energy - Movie Elvis of the sixties, the nice and polished Elvis - Elvis in 1968, I’m back in business and wearing a leather suit - or Elvis in the seventies, very aware of his artistic effects for instance by wearing jewels

He also stresses that it’s important not to believe that you are a star just because you put on a jumpsuit – you have to have some talent and fill out the King’s shoes with respect, be cred-ible and have Elvis in your heart.

Henrik Knudsen (owner of Graceland Randers) about ETA’s: ”Most of them are okay, but it’s such a shame when they make it a farce, because then I feel they are making a joke out of El-

vis.” Henrik continues: ”Furthermore, a good ETA has to distance himself to being Elvis – some of them really believe they are Elvis, and that’s when it goes completely wrong.”

But why ETA shows popular? First of all it is the wonderful Elvis music that make people attend the ETA shows. Elvis’ music always makes people happy. Elvis had a high level of sex appeal and charm, which the ETA also try to capture, and even though they are tribute artists, some of them actually do make women scream and run to the stage for a kiss.

If you have never been lucky enough to see Elvis perform live, the ETA shows might be for you. If the ETA is really good and the show setup right, they can take you to a different universe. Elvis is a legend and the ETA shows can take you back to a time when women were women and men were men. They can give you an idea of what it must have been like to be at a show back when the King himself was alive and giving his all on stage.

So what did Elvis himself think about all these impersonators? Elvis’ own view was a mixture between flattery and finding it slightly strange. In July of 1977 he wrote the following in a con-gratulatory letter to an impersonator:

Dear David,Congratulations on winning the tal-ent competition. You were in good luck on the show this Friday!

I really do appreciate you as a fan… and mimcry (mimicry) is a sincere form of being a fan. Do develop your

own special talents and abilities though, David.This is a great compliment to me that you would work so hard on this act like mine but never neglect your own special abilities to be yourself also.Best wishes in the future and God bless you.

The supermarket tabloid the Weekly World News, known for its supernatural and paranormal themes and an approach to news that verged on the satirical, joked that Elvis himself entered an Elvis look-alike contest at a local restaurant shortly before his death, and came in third place. Some people did not realize that this was not true. Charlie Chaplin actually once entered a Chaplin look-alike contest. He was reported to have come in third.

To perform as and pretend to be someone else takes more than a jump-suit – it takes talent and respect. Without these you get a sad parody. Unfortunately the latter category is usually more visible and tends to draw more attention than the kind of imitators, who really make an effort and work hard to do Elvis justice.

Some change their name to include “Elvis”, “Presley”, or “Aaron” – or all of them. Some have had “work done” to look more like Elvis. Is this still respectful? Where you draw the line is up to you, but whether we like ETAs or not, there’s one thing, we can all agree on – There was only one King!

The exposure that Elvis got through the radio broadcast of The Louisiana Hayride in 1954-56 was one of the key factors of establishing the early part of his career. With the exception of Las Vegas, there is

no place where Elvis played more shows, and his return to the city in 1975 was like a homecoming to both Elvis and the many fans he had there since he started out. We have chosen to release the soundboard from the evening show of June 7 – definitely a show that Elvis and the audience truly enjoy, and with a great set list featuring old and new favourites.

The CD comes in a 5” digipack with an eight-page booklet featuring photos from the June 1975 tour.
