LANGUAGE ONE (L1)!

The native language.

LANGUAGE TWO (L2)!

The new language being learned.

SHELTERED INSTRUCTION!

ELL students receive grade level instruction in English. The core curriculum is made accessible and meaningful to students through differentiation. The goal is for students to understand the content (science, math, history, etc...) and in the process, learn English grammar and vocabulary.

TRANSITIONAL PROGRAM OF BILINGUAL INSTRUCTION (TPI)!

Students receive instruction in their native language in decreasing amounts of time as part of a transitional process to an English-only curriculum. This process is usually complete in three years.

BILINGUAL EDUCATION!

Students are learning English as a new language with support provided in their primary language.

DUAL LANGUAGE!

Students receive academic instruction in two languages for at least six years. Half of the students are native in the target language (Spanish, in NSSD 112) while the other half are not. Literacy and language arts are taught in both languages in the upper elementary grades. The goal is for students to become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER (ELL) OR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)!

Students are learning English as a new language. Support is given to students in their classroom (push-in) or in a different setting (pull-out).

Mission Statement

To nurture every child as an individual;

To empower every child as a learner;

To inspire every child to become a contributing

member of the community.
