Welcome!We’re proud to present the Elphinstone Institute’s extensive public events for Autumn 2021. What is the Elphinstone Institute? Founded in 1995 in honour of the University of Aberdeen’s quincentenary, we’re dedicated to the triple task of researching, teaching, and celebrating the rich culture of the North-East and North of Scotland, all through the disciplines of Ethnology, Folklore, and Ethnomusicology.

STORIES FROM DEESIDE TO INDIACathy Low | 7–8.30pm | Book via Come on a story journey through time and space to hidden glens, haunted castles, enchanted forests, and Himalayan peaks as storyteller Cathy Low tells tales from her native Deeside and from her second home in India. In partnership with the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

PLACE-NAMES AND FOLKLORE OF UPPER DEESIDE Ian Murray | 6.30–8pm | Book viaJoin Ian Murray – fishing and wilderness guide, Royal Deeside, and author of In the Shadow of Lochnagar and other books – for an evening exploring the place-names and folklore of his home, Upper Deeside.

ALL MY LIFE’S BURIED HERE: THE STORY OF GEORGE BUTTERWORTH (2019, dir. by Stewart Morgan Hajdukiewicz) followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker | 6.30–8pmAll My Life’s Buried Here tells the story of folksong collector, composer, and country dancer George Butterworth, and his life and music fromchildhood to his final hours in the violent confusionof the trenches at the Battle of the Somme.

POLISH-SCOTTISH SONG GROUP | 7–9pmExchange culture through the traditional songs of Scotland, Poland, and many other countries. Highly regarded and talented Aberdonian singer Janice Clark expertly leads these virtual singing sessions. All welcome! TUESDAY, 19 OCTOBER 2021 Scottish International Storytelling Festival

STORYTELLING: IMAGINE THE BEST MUSICIAN7–8.30pm | Book via Born in Kamakwie in northern Sierra Leone, Usifu Jalloh is a highly experienced, talented, and award-winning performer and educator whose storytelling style encompasses international languages, music, dance, and themes. Join Usifu as he tells a tale he learned when he was only seven years old, which still inspires him today. In partnership with the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

THURSDAY, 21 OCTOBER 2021 Public Lecture Series

MIS-REMEMBERED? RETROSPECTIVE LENSES ON ABERDEEN’S WOMEN’S MOVEMENT IN THE 70S AND 80S followed by a Q&A6.30–8pm | Book via Chris Aldred (UoA) leads a panel of women coming together to remember women’s struggles and to share individual perspectives on their involvement in the women’s liberation movement in Aberdeen. These experiences will be set in the context of their remembered motivations and experiences.

PERFORMING LOCAL IDENTITIES ON GLOBAL DIGITAL PLATFORMS: AN EXPLORATION OF THE EXPERIENCES OF NORTH-EAST INTERNET CELEBRITIES | 6.30–8pm Internet celebrities often harness everyday local culture in the creation of their online content and identities. This group discussion with Internet celebrities based in North-East Scotland will explore their work, practices, creative processes, and experiences as public figures.

IN TIMES OF RAIN (2019, directed by Itandehui Jansen and written by Armando Bautista García), followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers6.30–8pmSoledad, a traditional healer, lives with her grandson José in an indigenous village in Mexico. Soledad’s daughter, Adela, moved to Mexico City many years ago and now wants José to join her, but Soledad believes the boy is better off in the village.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY | 6.30–8pmJoin us for an evening of presentations by local organisations working in traditional music education in the North-East. We’ll hear from the Dee and Don Ceilidh Collective and from Scottish Culture & Traditions (SC&T). Presenters will give overviews of their projects and share lessons learned and a discussion with the audience will follow.
