Elounda Bay Hotel, Crete
Briar Patch Inn, Sedona, Arizona
Elounda Bay may be a resort of gargantuan proportions, but it still maintains a traditional feel. Whitewashed walls, blue doors, bright pink flowers and gingham tablecloths keep it ‘Greek’, while several beaches and pools allow guests to spread out, ensuring peace and quiet, even at 1,000-plus capacity.
The resort’s two five-star hotels bookend the impressive array of facilities, including beaches, pools, marinas, restaurants, a spa, bars, shops, fitness centre, tennis courts, mini golf, art museum, kids’ play area, watersports and an amphitheatre.
I stayed at the Elounda Beach hotel, with 244 rooms ranging from ultra-modern villas (think James Bond-style gadgets) to more traditional cottages. Mine was somewhere in the middle, with a balcony looking out to sea and a bathroom so big the walk-in shower doubled as a sauna and steam room; it took me a while to even notice the running machine in the corner — a quirky touch.
Days merged into a blissful blur of swimming in the sea, long lunches, spa treatments and lovely evening meals, thanks to the resort’s fantastic in-room babysitting service. Jo Gardner
Everything about the Briar Patch Inn is charming and thoughtful, from the hand-drawn maps given out on arrival to the friendly farewell at check-out. Just a few miles out of Sedona, the ‘inn’ is actually a collection of 19 cabins, with quaint names such as Sparrow, Acorn and Treetop. Mine, Heron, was big enough for a family of four, with double and twin bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen and a basic, but clean, bathroom.
The wood and stone walls were accented with knick-knacks, while patterned rugs and cushions added a splash of colour, and a handy folder offered suggestions of local restaurants and activities. None of the cabins has a TV, but that’s no accident. Sedona is all about outdoor adventures and early nights, and after walking the few metres down to the creek, my friend and I spent the evening chatting on the swinging bench outside our cabin while others relaxed in communal hammocks.
Breakfast at the main lodge was delicious and healthy, enjoyed outside to the sound of the creek rushing past. It was a very difficult place to leave. Nicky Trup

Crete Expectations: Who says luxury andbabies don't mix? A short break in Eloundais just the tonic for tired parentsBy EMILY PAYNE
PUBLISHED: 15:16 GMT, 12 July 2014 | UPDATED: 13:10 GMT, 21 July 2014
The butterflies are palpable. The last time I felt this nervy was ten years ago as I was about to leapfrom a very tall bridge on a cord of elastic.
But this time, I'm doing something a lot lower-octane. I'm taking my baby on an aeroplane – and on aforeign holiday for the first time.
Before this, I freely admit to finding yelping children a drag on planes. I know, hypocrisy is an ugly trait. Now, with an eleven month in tow I dread the sighs and sideways glances of other passengers whenmy wriggly tot decides to test his lung capacity with a scream-athon at 37,000 feet.
