A Bombay Toastmasters Club Presentation

From The Boss Dear Friends,

March is a month that means different things to different people.

For some it is Oscar Fever, for others it is Exam Fever, for many it is

Financial Year End Fever, but for us at Toastmasters it was ContestFever.

I am proud to share with you that Rukmini Iyer, ACB, ALBandJuzer Udaipuri CCwent on to win the third place at the DivisionD International speech contest and Table Topics contest respectively.

Suneel Agarwal was a formidable opponent who made sure thecontest was fun filled.

The winners Adit Paul and Ankit Sharma will 'speak out'for thecrowns! On behalf of BTM I wish them all the best.

Zip, Zap, Zoom...I just cannot believe that exactly a year ago, I was contemplating a

choice... a choice to lead the club inspite of me being new to Toastmasters. Today, thanksto the wonderful support from everyone, the choice I made makes me feel elated.

Time for change,a time to select the ExCom - 2010-2011 for BTM.Members are invited to send in their nominations to the nomination committee chaired by

Immediate Past President, Nazir Usman. As we move ahead, we need leaders who willhold aloft the flag of BTM in the Toastmasters world, charting a new course and steering

the club towards success and learning. Leaders who can strengthen the foundation laid by

TM Arun Vishwanath and TM Nazir Bharde please come forward.

Opportunity knocks!Reverberations 2010 will be held in Mumbai during November 2010. This is the time for

each one of us to reach out and enhance our team management, leadership and networking

skills. It is indeed a matter of pride that Division Dwill be hosting this event. Kunal Khanna,ACB, CL is the Conference Chair and would be interacting with us regularly. Please get in

touch with Arvind Nair or me and tell us how you would like to help make the event a

great success.

This quarter has been eventful in the Toastmasters' world; emotions are running high as the

news of the inevitable split of District 82 was announced by our District Governor, DeepakMenon, DTM.

As I conclude, join me in wishing TM Parag Karvewho has been a wonderful contributor

to the movement and is the Outstanding Toastmaster for the third quarter.

In 1980, I spent a princely amount of Rs. 10/- from my pocket to buy my first ever book. It

was Toastmasters Handbook and over the years I added many Toastmaster

books to my collection. These books added to my repertoire of anecdotes,

quotes, stories, and humour which was of particular interest to me. Needlessto say that they came in extremely handy whenever I had to explain

some points, illustrate my speech, or just contribute to a good discussion.

A couple of years ago, I was amused to hear from a friend about Toastmasters International.

Having been inducted into the Toastmaster family very early I considered the domain my very

own and wondered what this organization had to offer beyond the books that had served me

so well in my journey.

Little knowing what to expect, but with a, I know all about Toastmasters attitude Iattended the first meeting. I felt a numbness after the meeting not with what I learnt during

the meeting but due to two counts firstly it was nothing about the books I had read and

secondly the hard hitting realization of the long journey that lay before me to evolve into aToastmaster. I have since then made ample use of Toastmasters and make it a point torecommend to my friends, associates and clients. However my encouraging suggestion is

usually met with a quizzical expression,Why do I need Toastmasters?. And my responseto their expression resembles the same as that of meeting a dumb witted person.

However, now I make it a point to point a few advantages hoping the penny drops.

Communication. From the time of human evolution communication has been paramount ingetting a message across and in todays complex life quality of communication helps a person

to articulate the thoughts and communicate much better.

Effectiveness.In direct communication, better communication means more effectiveness. In

all forms, whether talking to a friend, explaining to a colleague, making a point or a presenta-tion, better communication is always effective and yields better results. With everything else

remaining equal, a better communicator will always be a preferred candidate and will deliver

better results due to effective communication.

Leadership.While communication helps at every level, it makes its most powerfulpresence during Leadership. You will rarely find a leader lacking in communication

skills. Communication is an essential requirement on the leadership journey. And

leaders realize this very early. So articulating themselves better makes them more

effective, yields better results and makes them powerful leaders. Leaders, not just

lead but persuades, convinces and boosts morale of teams and organizations or

just a friend who needs that push when the chips are down.

In a sense the three words, Communication, Effectiveness and Leadership are entwined and

inseparable. As you move towards improving your communication skills you notice your

effectiveness bar going up and gradually you will be looked upon as a leader.

Thats Toastmasters for you.

Proposed District reformation

Recently the TI Board of Directors has approved reformation of District 82 into two districts.

The constitution of the two districts, as recommended by the District 82 Council in its meetingin November 2009, shall be:

District 82 South (82S)- comprising of clubs in Sri Lanka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka(present Divisions A, B, E, G and H)

District 82 North (82N)- comprising of clubs in the rest of India (present Divisions C, D, Fand I).

The year commencing on 1 July 2010 shall be the transition year when the two districts will start

functioning albeit under one umbrella. The district will still be District 82 and shall have oneDistrict Governor BUT with two Lt. Governors of Education & Training (LGET) and two Lt.Governors of Marketing (LGM). However, there will one Treasurer and one Secretary for the

combined formation. The district council, at its option, can nominatetwo Public Relations Officers (PRO), one for each district, instead of one

PRO for the combined formation.

In this transition year, TI will continue to treat the districts as one unit.

There will thus be a combined district committee meeting, council meetingand conference with one district champion representing the combined

districts in the semi-final contest at the International Convention during August 2011.

However, from 1 July 2011 both districts shall start functioning independently with two district

numbers and completely separate administration. And of course, two district champions whomake their way to the semi-finals in the international arena in August 2012!

that is not communication is probably dependent on something to initiate communication orkeep it going. For instance, business is dependent on communications. Your ability to communi-cate and the way in which you do so is very important for your career. This is why one needs tomaster the art of communication, both verbal and written.Influencing AbilitiesThis is more of a leadership trait. It includes persuading and negotiating skills. career prospects.Creative ThinkingIt is said that intelligence is central to both the right and left modes of the brain. But it is sad to see

a majority of people give more importance only to the logical approach in problem solving.What is really required is a blend of logical and lateral thinking processes together to generatenew ideas and solutions, and having an open mind.Social SkillsIt means ones ability to relate to people, help them and facilitate their work flow. Given thecorporate work environment, how many people can work as loners? Interdependence today isof greater value than independence. Being an effective team player is an important asset. Takento another level, this skill also stands for the art of networking.Managing Money

If, in spite of possessing all the above mentioned skills, you fail to achieve success it may bebecause you are poor in the numbers game! You must have your figures, statistics and accounts in

place. You must be shrewd with money matters. In fact, I can go as far as saying that the bottomline is money and remember the old adage, money begets money.

Well, there you have them....the seven mantrasto being successful. So, go ahead and use themhopefully Ill see you right there on the top!
