People save for a variety of things in retirement. Some dream of vacation homes in tropical destinations, others plan to spend time with grandchildren and family. Of all the activities you are saving for in retirement, did you know that health care may have the biggest price tag?
Thankfully, your retirement health costs are not set in stone. Of course, you won’t have total control over your health in retirement, but there are things you can do to manage your health risks and potential costs. Here are a few tips.
Get informed — Medical expertise and advice are constantly changing. Keep yourself up-to-date on healthcare news, particularly with regard to issues that have affected you or those related to you. Ask your doctor to help you identify areas of particular concern.
Develop (or maintain) a healthy lifestyle — This boils down to simple wisdom: eat healthy, exercise regularly. Limit fats and sugars and increase your intake of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. If you haven’t already, embark on an exercise program you can stick with long term. If it’s been a while since you last exercised, consult with your doctor before you begin.
Relax — Stress can be detrimental to your health. Maintaining friendships, focusing on hobbies, and taking time to relax may help ensure good mental health. In fact, research shows that staying socially active in retirement can alleviate stress and reduce the risk of depression. It may also aid in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.
Learn your numbers — Staying healthy means monitoring a few key numbers. You should know your blood pressure, cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI). Your blood sugar level indicates your risk for diabetes. Your doctor can perform simple tests to help you identify these numbers and recognize any vulnerability you may have.
Get preventative care — Preventing a disease or illness can be much less expensive (and painful) than treating one. As recommended by your doctor, take advantage of free or low-cost diabetes and heart disease screenings, mammograms, and vaccinations. And make sure to get your annual physical.
There is no way to guarantee you won’t have unexpected healthcare costs in retirement. But maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help you reduce possible health-related expenses—not to mention avoids spending precious time in the recovery room.

Yes, Elmwood Business members it is that time of the year again to prepare for the Elmwood Classic Race. As you know, the Elmwood Classic Race is the oldest and one of the largest races in Jefferson Parish and has always been located within the Elmwood Business Park and sponsored by many of the businesses in the Park. The Elmwood Business Association is a proud sponsor and supporter of this event.
The Elwood Classic Race is organized by the Rotary Club of Harahan with all proceeds to benefit the Harahan Memorial Scholarship Foundation, a non-profit corporation established to provide college scholarships to needy and qualified East Jefferson Parish students. Each year the Foundation awards scholarships worth $12,000 to Jefferson Parish students based on financial needs and scholastic ability. Often our recipients have stated that this is their only means and opportunity to attend college.
This is the 28th year of the race and is scheduled for Sunday, January 26, 2014. We hope that everyone can come out and join us on race day. There is a ½ mile walk, a 5K and a 10K walk/run. There is something for everyone. After the race, there will be a great party with a DJ, a live band and many food and beverage items. Some featured items have included: coca-cola products, Miller beer, Kentwood water, fried catfish, fried Oreo cookies, red beans & rice, Jambalaya, chips, and fresh fruits. Registrations can be made at nolarunning.com. Colorful long sleeve t-shirts will be given out to all participants. This race/walk is a good way to promote running and healthy activity and to enjoy a Sunday morning event with your friends, family and co-workers. So mark the date on your calendar and come out and join the fun.
Also, anyone interested in assisting in sponsoring the race can call Randy Martin at 504-737-5126 or by email at [email protected].

Starr Textile Services Begins Operations in Elmwood Business ParkIt has been a very good year for Jefferson Parish in terms of economic activity, and recently, the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) and Jefferson Parish celebrated the completion of a major project in Elmwood. Starr Textile Services, which provides commercial laundry services to the regional hospitality industry, hosted its grand opening ceremony in early November. The woman-owned company purchased the Jefferson Parish facility in April. Operations began in the new facility in October.
JEDCO and Starr Textile Services worked closely for more than two years to secure the right site to host the expanding business. With the new building chosen and big plans for growth, Starr applied for an SBA 504 Loan. JEDCO’s finance team worked tirelessly to secure the loan, which was used for acquisition of land and building, new commercial laundry equipment and funding of building renovations. Of the $10.7 million investment, JEDCO financed over $4.3 million of it, making this the largest SBA 504 loan in JEDCO history.
The completion of the loan allowed the Louisiana plant to undertake additional customers in both the Louisiana and Mississippi markets. The new facility created 40 new jobs immediately. Another 25 people will be hired in the first year of operations. The expansion allowed Starr to increase its capacity to over 7,500 pounds of laundry per hour to service hotels, restaurants and condominium property management partners 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“This is an exciting day for JEDCO,” said JEDCO Executive Director, Jerry Bologna. “This project has been a collaborative effort from the very beginning. I commend the JEDCO team, the Parish President and Parish Department directors for their unwavering commitment to Starr. We are
confident that Starr Textile Services will find unprecedented success in Jefferson Parish. JEDCO remains dedicated to Starr and their team as they expand their operations in Louisiana.”
Starr partnered with Pellerin Laundry Machinery Sales Company and sister company, Pellerin Milnor Corporation. The local laundry equipment manufacturing and sales companies, based out of Kenner, designed and equipped the new facility with products manufactured in Jefferson Parish.
“A partnership between Starr Textile Services, Pellerin Laundry Machinery Sales Company and Pellerin Milnor Corporation is truly indicative of Jefferson Parish’s versatile business-base,” said Parish President John F. Young. “Not only did Starr find a new home in Jefferson Parish, where the company can expand and find success, but it also moved closer to a company that can service its equipment needs. Jefferson Parish businesses don’t have to look beyond the region to find what they need. What they need is right here in their own backyard.” Both Starr and Pellerin Milnor were excited about the opportunity to continue working together, especially in such close proximity to one another.
Sheila Hodges, Starr owner and SHE Inc. Chairman, added, “Pellerin and Starr make great partners because our business principles and high standards for customer service are aligned. The New Orleans area has been very good to us. Therefore, our commitment back to this area, and now to Jefferson Parish as well, is that we will continue to invest in the community. We will continue to train, improve and grow our workforce. We will continue to be the driving force in the advancement of our industry.”
“We are very proud to be partnering with Starr Textile Services on this state-of-the-art laundry facility,” said Scott McClure, Vice President of Sales of Pellerin Laundry
Machinery Sales Company, Inc. “In 2008, we designed and equipped Starr’s laundry facility in Foley, AL and are excited about their new facility to serve the Greater New Orleans market. This new laundry is be minutes away from our Kenner plant and will have some of the latest energy saving technology.”
“Starr Textile Services’ decision to expand business in Jefferson Parish is another sign that our region is the right fit for companies looking to grow,” said Michael Hecht, President & CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. “Not only does Starr’s partnership with Pellerin Milnor highlight the unique opportunities for expansion that exist in our region, it’s also a sign of the strength of our tourism industry, one of the biggest employers in Greater New Orleans.”
Other things happening in Jefferson ParishThe Star Textile Services project was just one of several major economic announcements this year. In August, Dyno Nobel, the global leader in the chemical industry, broke ground on an $850 million ammonia production facility on the West Bank in collaboration with Cornerstone Chemical Company. Smoothie King moved the international headquarters back to Jefferson Parish over the summer and Dick’s Sporting Goods opened in September as part of a revitalization of Oakwood Center Mall.
The Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy, a regional magnet school, opened its doors to students in August at the Churchill Technology and Business Park. Shortly after, Delgado Community College announced a partnership with JEDCO to build a new River City Campus at Churchill.
As we move into the New Year, JEDCO continues to focus its efforts on business retention, business expansion and business attraction in order to create jobs and positively influence the economic viability of Jefferson Parish.
