A MESSAGE FROM REV. CATHERINE…

This is a word cloud, generated by all my Sunday reflections this past year, the more frequent words are more prominent in a word cloud. I am glad that God, Jesus, love, people, heart and community are some of the most prominent words! Sunday morning is one of the main ways that we connect each week and so this visual representation assures me that God, Jesus, love, people and community are the heart of what you hear from me each week.

It’s been a year! We did some significant work together! Just as I predicted, this past year was a more challenging year, especially at Riverview as we made significant changes to how we make decisions and lived into that new reality which has been a learning curve for everyone. Nine Mile River has lived into their new governance model for over a year now and it is working well. The other significant change was the dissolving of the Pastoral Charge and the creation of a Cooperative Ministry. My star word for 2017 was understanding. Our capacity to be understanding and compassionate with each other was stretched a few times this past year.

I celebrate that the Pastoral Charge asked Halifax Presbytery to extend my time by one year in order to complete and solidify the goals and changes of this period.

My star word for 2018 is prayer, and while originally not excited about, in just a few weeks, it has become a touchstone, just as the previous years’ words did. Please know that I am intentionally praying for you and us each day.

Blessings on our time together… Rev. Catherine

ELMSDALE PASTORAL CHARGE - TRANSITION TEAM – 2017

Leader/Chair: Martha HealySecretary: Martha HealyMembers: Donna Anderson, Elaine Gray, Martha Healy,

Rev. Dr. Susan MacAlpine-Gillis, Rev. Catherine MacDonald, Reeta Sweeney

The Elmsdale Pastoral Charge Transition Team has met monthly in 2017 (except for July and August) to continue their work in supporting the Rev. Catherine in her Interim Ministry in our Pastoral Charge. We also provide leadership where needed during congregational meetings and we try to keep both congregations updated as to the Transition Team’s activities with the help of our newsletter, “The Transition Times”.

We have seen both congregations grow during 2017 by willing to look at situations in new ways and being receptive to doing things differently. As we move forward in 2018, a realization of how we can better live out our Christian ethos in our communities will be one of our foci. We will continue to give our support to Rev. Catherine, to Riverview and to Nine Mile River during this time of Interim Ministry.

Sincerely submitted, Martha Healy, Chair/ Recording Secretary

INTERIM MINISTRY REPORT

The original goals of the Interim Ministry period were as follows; they continue to guide my work and ministry with you. Under each goal, I listed some of the ways in which those were lived out in 2017.

1. To understand our own history and the dynamics of the relationship between Nine Mile River and Riverview in order to determine the best way forward for the good of each point and the pastoral charge.

a. Halifax presbytery approved the dissolution of the pastoral charge and the formation of a cooperative Ministry.

2. To research and implement a form of governance which will work better for the pastoral charge and to ensure that within that form of governance there is clarity around roles and responsibilities.

a. Riverview approved a one year trial for Governance as Spiritual Practice; you can read more about that in the Riverview section of this report.

3. To educate the congregation around appropriate expectations of ministry personnel and appropriate ways of dealing with any conflict connected to those expectations.

a. Implemented a ‘Midweek Message’ which is emailed to everyone who has email, posted on the website and Facebook page as well as posted at the churches in an effort to keep everyone up to date with what is going on.

b. A ‘Can We Talk’ session on good communication was held at Riverview with approximately 35 people in attendance, a full report is included in the Riverview section of this report

4. To engage in honest conversation about the way we live out our faith as members of the Elmsdale pastoral charge and how that impacts the way we live, work and worship in community.

a. Nine Mile River purchased ‘Sing Hallelujah, a video hymnal to enhance worship on the weeks that an organist is not available. A projector was purchased, subsidized in part with a Technology grant from the Conference. A screen was donated by Stairs Memorial United Church as they weren’t using it. The projector and screen are used weekly and has been a great addition to the worship experience. The chancel area of the church was rearranged and opened up to accommodate the use of technology.

b. Riverview experimented with Mindful Mondays in the fall, and despite the initial interest, numbers dwindled and we decided to discontinue it.

c. Website traffic continues to grow; there were slightly more than 2900 views of it in 2017 as compared to 840 in 2016, although the website was only operational for 10 months of 2016. While most of our readers are local, we have readers all across North America, with occasional one from as far away as Thailand.

d. The Facebook page has become a key way of advertising our fundraisers, which is demonstrated by the higher number of tickets sold and attendance at both churches. Members are making more use of the page by posting events, pictures etc.

e. Riverview connected with the John Howard Society to be a site for which community service hours can be earned.

Page 9: elmsdalepastoralchargedotcom.files.wordpress.com…  · Web view– that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs

f. We hosted The Blanket Exercise at Riverview and invited the community to take part.

g. We hosted a Worship Forum at Riverview. h. Created a Welcome Package for newcomers at Riverview. i. The Transition Team plus Christine Rainnie attended the John Pentland

event regarding church vitality and mission. j. The Chairs of the PC and each congregation, along with the Transition

Team and Ministry and Personnel supported my nomination as President Elect of Maritime Conference.

k. A group at Riverview undertook freshening up the entryway to provide a welcoming first impression.

l. The Pastoral Charge hosted presbytery at Riverview.m. Held a Blessing of the Animals at Riverview.

Can We Talk? – November 26, 2017 – Riverview United

Rev Catherine opened the meeting Can We Talk? by explaining we would be talking about communication and how we do it. That it would be a participatory session.

1. Sessions norms were invited and the following things were named by participants:1. be respectful 2. speak for yourself not others3. be truthful4. let others finish speaking before you start speaking5. have concern for others6. use positive statements

2. What does communication mean?1. how do we know what happens at meetings? 2. knowing clearly what will happen at upcoming meetings 3. ask the question rather than stew and spread the confusion

3. What is working?1. email and Facebook2. information in bulletin 3. Midweek message 4. announcements scrolling through before service5. posting Executive Council information 6. two separate people emphasized that people had to take

responsibility for getting the information that is available.

4. What could work better? 1. buddy system for those who don’t have computer, those who do not have

this technology could call and ask their buddy about the Midweek message

2. a participant asked for a show of hands for those who didn’t have email, of those present, only 4 didn’t.

3. we need constant reminders to look at the boards

5. Rev. Catherine, Martha Healy (Transition Team Chair) and Al Wallace (M&P member shared a skit on Triangulation.

TRIANGULATION SKIT

Narrator: Rev. Smith is winding down after a long day of ministry. She puts her feet up, picks up a book and gives a contented sigh,

Rev: Ah, Sunday afternoon, I think the services went well, I feel as if I am getting to know the people after six months… time for a cup of tea and start looking at the readings for next week.

The phone rings… Rev: Hello.

David: Hi Reverend, it’s David, you remember me, the chair of the board.

Rev: Oh yes, David, how are your children doing? Adjusting to your wife going back to work after maternity leave?

David: Oh yes, it’s been a bit challenging, but they are getting used to it.

Rev: Glad to hear that… it’s a big change after her being home for a year, plus you were able to take some leave too weren’t you.

David: Yes, thanks. I really appreciated your sermon this morning about how we all have different ideas of family.

Rev: Thanks.

David: Clears throat, Um, look you know I think you’re great, and a lot of other folks do, too. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the breath of fresh air our church really needs. The thing is, though, I’ve gotten some phone calls from some other members. And, well, some people aren’t happy with some of the things that are taking place…

Narrator: Ever been involved in a conversation like that? It’s called a triangle. Where you are relaying information from another source without names, so there is no possibility that anything is going to change.

What is wrong with the way this scene unfolded?

1. The names are rarely, if ever, attached to the comments. “Some people are concerned...” “There is a perception that...” The presenting issues are often vague, and they’re made to sound like they represent the consensus of the entire congregation. But do they? How should a minister respond to these concerns when she doesn’t even know who they come from or what specific thing has triggered them?

2. David, the chair of the board, is trying to be helpful, but he’s engaging in a communication technique called “triangulation”. Just like triangle has three points, triangulation involves three parties. Person A has something to say to person B, but instead of drawing a line of communication directly between A and B, person A gets person C to pass the word along.

Rev: Hangs up the phone tiredly and sighs.

Elmsdale Pastoral Charge Annual Report 2017 Page 10

Page 11: elmsdalepastoralchargedotcom.files.wordpress.com…  · Web view– that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs

Oh Lord… I am feeling frustrated and discouraged. I know David is a good person and is only trying to help, but I don’t know what to do with what he said.

Who is unhappy with the way I do the pastoral prayer? What exactly is inappropriate about my use of humor in my sermons? How exactly can I be “more spiritual”?

And didn’t the church say they wanted more young people? Why exactly is it a problem that I spend so much time with the youth?

Narrator: The problem with triangulated, unattributed comments is that they offer no opportunity for dialogue. The minister is robbed of the possibility of having a deep pastoral conversation with whomever voiced the concern to the chair.

She doesn’t get to use their concern as an opportunity to get to know them on a deeper level and find out what has motivated them to share their feelings in this way.

She doesn’t get to consider the source. Is it Mr. Jones who always finds something to gripe about, or is it Mrs. Jennings, who never has a bad word to say about anything or anyone, and therefore a concern from her, is something to take seriously?

Are these David’s personal gripes, and he’s portraying them as the voice of the entire congregation?

In short, triangulated comments deny the minister the chance to be the minister. They undermine her ministry and make the church an unhealthier place. When David the chair, shares a concern in this way, he’s genuinely trying to make an uncomfortable situation as easy as possible, but in reality it has made things worse.

The minister will likely scan the congregation next Sunday, wondering who is talking about her behind her back, even as they smile and say, “nice to see you,” on the way out.

Rev: Look, David, I appreciate you sharing these things with me, and I seek feedback so that I can be the best minister I can be, the kind of minister you deserve. But these generalities don’t afford me the opportunity to learn and grow. I need to know more about what exactly drives these comments. I need to know who they came from so I can have some conversations with these folks. Let’s dig deeper together so our relationship as minister and church can be everything God wants it to be.”

Narrator: The minister needs to be able to sit down with Mrs. Jennings in her living room over a cup of tea and get to know more about what concerns her about her pastoral prayers. She needs to be able to talk with Mr. Jones and tell him that, while she respects his opinion, she has to devote time to bringing in new members so that the church has a stable future. Perhaps she can even brainstorm with Mr. Jones some ways for the congregation

Elmsdale Pastoral Charge Annual Report 2017 Page 11

Page 12: elmsdalepastoralchargedotcom.files.wordpress.com…  · Web view– that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs

to work together to care for the shut-ins that she doesn’t have as much time to see as she’d like.

Narrator: If David responds with “I really can’t say”, or “I don’t feel comfortable sharing who said that to me”, then the minister needs to firmly, lovingly say, “well, then I’m sorry, David, but I don’t really know what to do with such general, non-specific information, so we’re not really accomplishing anything here. Please ask those folks if they’re willing to put their name to their comments, otherwise there’s nothing I can do.”These positive pastoral encounters are only possible if the minister pushes back against the triangulation and refuses to let unattributed concerns remain that way. Some momentary discomfort on the part of her and her chair can result in positive growth for her as a minister and for the congregation as a family who truly trusts one another enough to “tell the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). But that will only happen if the minister and key congregational leaders have the courage to remove the veil of anonymity, take the risk of being truly vulnerable with one another, and open themselves up for grace to transform them all, rewarding their risk.

Adapted from When Some People Complain http://www.ministrymatters.com/all/entry/3260/when-some-people-complain

6. How can we improve communication?1. If we don’t understand something then ask someone who can answer your

question. ie. If you don’t understand an announcement, ask Pat or Rev. Catherine

2. Go to the source if you are unhappy with something or someone. ie. If you disagree with a decision of the Executive, speak to Rev. Catherine or Bill Parks (Chair). If you are unhappy with someone, go speak to them!

3. If you are uncomfortable speaking about your concern, ask a third party to go with you.

4. If someone complains about the same thing repeatedly, ask for possible solutions or ask that person not to tell you this anymore

5. Diligently read the announcements and circles and other information sources

6. Here is the link to the video that wouldn’t load. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKvud6DSvt4

7. How do we encourage people to sign up for projects?1. In response to this, we have changed one of the boards in the entryway to

be a sign up board, that’s where all projects etc. will be posted.

8. One of the pieces of the new governance that has not yet been initiated is what Rev. Catherine Smith called ‘Shared Ministry Gatherings’ (which upon reflection is not a good term for us to use since we used to be part of a ‘Shared Ministry’ with the Presbyterians and want to avoid confusion) where all groups/committee etc. get together to share with each other what was going on and their plants. As an Executive, we made a conscious decision to delay implementing that as we were trying to get our own feet on stable ground first. This may have been an error on our part, so we will host our first one in January, date to be determined.

Page 13: elmsdalepastoralchargedotcom.files.wordpress.com…  · Web view– that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs

9. As I was writing this report, I wanted to elaborate on three things that seemed to cause a great deal of anxiety and gossip in the past few months:

1. Painting the entryway – somehow word got around that the entryway was going to be painted turquoise and why did we even need to paint it at all. The group that was empowered by the executive (the decision making body of the congregation) to refresh the entryway, decided on the colour of paint. I spoke one Sunday about using turquoise as an accent colour, which is the colour of our front doors and incidentally the colour of friendship, somehow that got misinterpreted as Catherine was painting the entryway turquoise.

2. Confusion about decorating for Christmas – again, somehow the UCW’s message to Rev. Catherine letting her know that they would not be able to decorate the sanctuary and entryway got interpreted to mean that she wasn’t letting them decorate, Mabel Wellwood, UCW President addressed this in a previous Midweek Message.

3. Concerns about stacking unused chairs at back of church – that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs at the back is not the best solution, if you have an idea of how to address this, please speak with me. What I (Rev. Catherine) didn’t do a good job of communicating is that there is a ratio of seating capacity to average worship attendance that is generally thought to be the most effective: we should only have 20-25% empty chairs, or another way of putting that, 75-80% of the chairs should be filled. More empty seats than feels as if ‘nobody’ is in worship. Less than that, it feels too crowded. Our average Sunday attendance is 75-80, we have around 145 chairs out, so we are only using 55% of available seats, much lower than what is considered ideal. As attendance increases, we will add more.

THIS IS MY CHURCH

It is composed of people like me.We make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am.Its pews will be filled if I help to fill them.

It will do great work if I workIt will make generous gifts to many causes,

If I am a generous giver. It will bring other people

Into its worship and fellowship if I bring them.It will be a church of loyalty and love,

Of fearlessness and faith,And a church with a noble spirit --

If I, who makes it what it is, am filled with these. Therefore, with the help of God,

I shall dedicate myself to the task of beingAll the things that I want my church to be.

COOPERATIVE MINISTRY PROPOSAL – JUNE 2017

The Elmsdale Pastoral Charge consists of two points: Riverview United in Elmsdale and Nine Mile River United in Nine Mile River. I was appointed Interim Minister in January 2016 for a 30 month period after a period of unrest and the resignation of their minister.

Goals were set before I arrived and have continued to guide my work and that of the Transition Team. They are:

1. To understand the own history and the dynamics of the relationship between Nine Mile River and Riverview in order to determine the best way forward for the good of each point and the pastoral charge.

2. To research and implement a form of governance which will work better for the pastoral charge and to ensure that within that form of governance there is clarity around roles and responsibilities.

3. To educate the congregation around appropriate expectations of ministry personnel and appropriate ways of dealing with any conflict connected to those expectations.

4. To engage in honest conversation about the way we live out our faith as members of the Elmsdale pastoral charge and how that impacts the way we live, work and worship in community.

As a way of getting at the heart of all of this, the Transition Team and I decided to host a series of Listening Circles.

We held 9 Listening Circles over the course of several months. The same questions were asked at each one and someone from that Transition Team was on hand to record the information. I then took all that data and created a Listening Circle Report that was shared with the PC in October 2016. The Listening Circles helped me to gain an understanding of both congregations and as an outsider; I was able to see them without many preconceived ideas.

The two congregations are similar in some ways; they are both: 1. Hopeful and apprehensive2. Want to be loving communities that share God's love 3. Willingness to let go of the past4. Want to let go of negativity

In other ways, they are very different: 1. Size2. Demographics, 3. Facilities4. Assets and liabilities

Observations: 1. Neither congregation has sufficient assets at the present time to be effective on

their own.2. The two points share ministry and administration costs, worship together during

the summer and little else. The cost sharing ratio is 75/25.3. There is good support between the two points for each other’s fundraisers. 4. In joint decisions, because of the disparity in size, Riverview dominates and Nine

Mile River’s voice gets lost.

Elmsdale Pastoral Charge Annual Report 2017 Page 14

Page 15: elmsdalepastoralchargedotcom.files.wordpress.com…  · Web view– that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs

5. They each need a governance model that works for them, NMR is experimenting with a ‘Committee of the Whole’ Model, Riverview is doing the same with ‘Governance as Spiritual Practice.’

The more time I spent with the two congregations, the more it became apparent that it different model of relationship might fit their circumstances better. And I so after some conversation with the Rev. Dr. Linda Yates, who is in a Cooperative Ministry, as well as the Transition Team, we brought the idea of Cooperative Ministry to the congregations.

Things that would stay the same: 1. Share a minister and administrative costs2. Share worship over the summer and other special occasions3. Each church would be responsible for costs related to their respective buildings. 4. Representatives from both churches would be involved in Joint Needs

Assessment and Joint Search Committees.

Things that would be different: 1. The Riverview Treasurer would handle payroll and joint costs and invoice Nine

Mile River for their portion. 2. The only ongoing joint committee would be Ministry & Personnel. 3. On matters of polity such as remits, each congregation would vote and send in

responses separately, although they could share the educational sessions about them.

Advantages: 1. Each congregation would be free to live out their respective missions and

identities. 2. Energy would be freed up from meetings to ministry and mission.

Update – This was approved at Halifax Presbytery on November 14, 2017

ELMSDALE PASTORAL CHARGE – WORSHIP COMMITTEE

Chair – Rev. Catherine MacDonaldSecretary – Reeta SweeneyMembers – Martha Healy, Wendy McCorkill, Dave Osborne, Reeta Sweeney, David Fizzard, Murray Wellwood.

The Elmsdale Pastoral Charge Worship held 8 meetings to plan and evaluate worship in Riverview United Church and Nine Mile River United Church.

In March we hosted the Blanket Exercise. This was a positive and learning experience for the 20+ attending. Out of that exercise and our focus on First Nations throughout Lent, we are following the example of Presbytery and Conference by opening worship with an Acknowledgment of the Territory.

Worship is shared in a variety of ways. Our Lenten worship was enhanced by a change in seating at Riverview; the

chairs were placed into an open circle of four quadrants. Members of Riverview choir attended the Maundy Thursday service at Nine Mile River bringing their Ministry of Music. Taize pieces were well received at the Good Friday service.

Sharing worship, music and communion at Magnolia brings us out into the community.

Thanks to the youth of our pastoral charge for adding joy to our services—by using the Prayground, by lighting the Christ candle, through liturgical dance, by being a tech team volunteer and being part of Michael Mouse by being Mary, Joseph, a shepherd and the puppeteer.

Music surprises were welcomed as Martha, Gary and David brought us a different version of The Lord’s Prayer!

Connecting movies and theological themes during the summer was a new way of exploring our faith in the world.

Thanks to David Fizzard for suggesting we have the doors to the sanctuary open when outside groups are using meeting spaces giving a “you are welcome here” feeling.

Gathering Service was touching with Cliff LeJeune’s presentation of Leonard Cohen’s music.

Angels Among US was a wonderful program to journey through the Christmas season. Thanks to Betty Allen, Wendy McCorkill and Christine Rainnie for bringing new ideas, creativity and enthusiasm to the Advent and Christmas season.

The service of Comfort and Hope always reminds me we are being held in God’s hands.

Respectfully Submitted, Reeta Sweeney

MINISTRY AND PERSONNEL COMMITTEE – 2017

The Ministry and Personnel Committee began the new year—2017—with anticipation, hope, and continued learning! Early in the year, we designed and conducted annual reviews for each paid member of our church’s staff—our interim minister (Catherine MacDonald), our office manager (Pat Spicer) and our choir director (Martha Healy). The process went very smoothly. It was a great opportunity to “check in” with each other, and identify and talk about any issues that may have required further discussions.

During the annual general meeting of Riverview United Church (February 27, 2017) our committee proposed creating a budget ‘item’ for accessing off-site cleaning services for our church—in order to alleviate the ongoing cleaning efforts (for the past several years) of our dutiful church volunteers. Our motion produced a fair bit of discussion, among those present; but it was ultimately defeated.

On April 1, 2017 Al Wallace attended a Ministry and Personnel course at St. Paul’s United Church in Spryfield that was planned and executed by the Halifax Presbytery.

In May, our committee met with Donna Anderson, Bill Parks, David Osborne and Catherine MacDonald to discuss her thoughts of offering to run for president of Maritime Conference—to be effective on/around June 2018. Catherine received unanimous support from each of us, and following the Maritime Conference meeting on May 28, 2017, she became its President-Elect!

In late September, we met with two members of the Halifax Presbytery—Elaine Gray and Reverend Susan MacAlpine-Gillis to discuss the extension of time—for our interim minister (Catherine); as well as considering the time-lines required for the continued—and most necessary work—of our Transition Team.

As we come to the end of 2017, our committee acknowledges the end of our Elmsdale Pastoral Charge—effective December 30, 2017. Robert, Al and I will continue to lean-in as required, to navigate the joys and challenges which will undoubtedly lie ahead for each and every one of us, as we make our way forward—into this new year.

Here’s to a wonderful 2018!

OUTREACH MINISTRY – PRAYER PALS

Leaders: Pat Spicer (902-883-2401) Avora Babcock (902-883-9598) Distribution – 42

In 2017 we received prayer request for 13 people in our communities and beyond. The Prayer Pal booklet which is prepared monthly, has quotes, prayers, and the names of the Prayer Pal members who when called up are always very willing to pray for people.

People comment of how the Prayer Pal booklet has been helpful to them. The booklet is distributed to the groups who are from four churches: Riverview United Church, Nine Mile River United Church, St. Mathews Presbyterian Church and Hardwood Land Presbyterian Church.

The leaders contact the members to pray when prayer requests are needed such as illness, in hospital, nursing homes, having operations etc. To have the Prayer Pals pray they must have the consent of the person(s) needing prayer. It could be for different sources, such as in our communities (neighbours having difficult times), or other parts of the world (peace keeping personnel and country leaders). If we don’t get in contact with you for prayers we leave a message, or we will get you the next time prayers are needed. People tell us that our prayers are powerful and that they feel strengthened when people are praying for them. Thank you to all the Prayer Pals for all the praying in 2017. Keep up the good work!

Don’t forget: “where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” – Matthew 18:20

Respectfully submitted The Prayer Pal Leaders

NINE MILE RIVER UNITED CHURCH – CHAIR’S REPORT

Chairperson – Donna AndersonSecretary – Avora Babcock

The Committee of the Whole met four times in 2017, January 29th, March 26th, June 4th, October 29th after lunch in the church basement.

At the March meeting, the Elders agreed to lead the service in Nine Mile River, twice a year.

At the meeting on June 4th a motion was passed to purchase a projector for use in our church.

Fundraisers that were carried out during the year for our church were: St. Patrick’s Day Tea & Sale - March Roast Beef Supper – April and September Christmas Tea & Sale – November Memorial Wreath – December Catering to Christmas Dinner for Hall members – December

A worship ‘prayground’ was set up in our church for any children who might attend. Ron Clark installed hand rails on both sides of the platform leading to the Pulpit.

Looking back over the year I thank God for our church and for the fact that its doors remain open and that so many people are willing to help in so many ways with the work of our church. I especially think of Yvonne White and all the work she puts into our church and for Audrey and Wendy who faithfully read our scriptures on Sundays. For Dave Fizzard who brings music to our church two Sunday a month. And for all the people who come to our church on a regular basis and also for those who drop in occasionally. We love and appreciate all of you.

I think of Vivian and how quickly she recovered from her cancer surgery. I know her tremendous faith was a factor but I like to feel that the many prayers generated on her behalf by the prayer pals and other friends and relatives helped too. I feel tremendous joy that God does hear our prayers and answers them for us.

I also think of Donna & Gary and the ups and downs of this past year, but I can see God in their lives and I continue to pray daily that he will be with them every step of the way I know God answers prayers, the spoken ones and the ones voiced in our hearts. Not always in the way we want but in His way and I praise and thank him daily.

NINE MILE RIVER UNITED CHURCH – BOARD OF STEWARDS AND TRUSTEES

Trustees – Wendy McCorkill, Gary Thompson, Steven White

We have adopted a governance model in which we don`t meet as separate committees but rather meet as a Committee of the Whole every second month.

During the past year some repairs were made to the furnace and front steps. Handrails were installed to both sets of steps leading up to the pulpit area. Purchased a new projector and had the good fortune of receiving the projector screen free of cost. Murray Wellwood kindly volunteered his services as our treasurer.

With the exception of a few minor things, most major work has been completed. Thank you to all who have taken part and supported us in all the work with repairs, upgrades and fundraising events. We greatly appreciated all the support.

Respectfully submitted,Yvonne White

NINE MILE RIVER UNITED CHURCH - MISSION & SERVICE FUND 2017

Coordinator – Avora Babcock

The theme of our Minute for Mission this year was “We Sing Thanksgiving.” The weekly readings describe how Mission & Service gifts are used to support our partners and ministers in Canada and around the world.

Some of the ministries we supported in the wider world were peace & reconciliation in El Salvador, education for children in India, human rights in the Philippines, migrant workers in Korea, children of the Congo and helping people recover from disasters in various parts of the world.

Within Canada we supported university students, deaf people, refugees, and the work of healing & reconciliation for indigenous people to name a few.

We would not have been able to accomplish these goals if it weren’t for the help and support of all you who give to Mission & Service with a willing hearts. Thank you so much. May God bless each of you as richly as you bless those in need in our country and around the world.

RIVERVIEW UNITED CHURCH – ANNUAL CONGREGATION MEETING 2017

The annual meeting of the Riverview United Church was held on Sunday, February 27, 2017 - 35 people were in attendance. At 7:01pm, Chairman Murray Wellwood opened the meeting, and invited Rev. Catherine MacDonald to share devotions.

Those in attendance: Fred Barton, Edna DeMan, Gordon DeMan, Debbie Musgrave, Brett Musgrave, Terry Jones, Kris Jones, Norval Mitchell, Dave Osborne, Cody MacDonnell, Vanessa Churchill, Pat Spicer, Marge Wagner, John Wagner, Robert Surette, Bill Parks, Eunice Parks, Lois MacKeil, Debbie Hall, Al Wallace, Margaret Hines, Gary Smiley, Reeta Sweeney, Jane Parker, Eunice Fizzard, Sally Allen, Dave Fizzard, Ferne Barton, Mabel Wellwood, Alan Gallant, Murray Wellwood, Christine Rainnie, Michael Rainnie, Betty O’Neill-Allen.

Vanessa Churchill moved that voting privileges for adherents be established at the outset - the motion was seconded by Norval Mitchell - motion carried.

Joan Gallant sat in as a temporary secretary and read the minutes from the previous Congregational meeting. Betty Allen moved the minutes be adopted as read; and it was seconded by Mabel Wellwood - motion carried.

Murray read a letter from Harold Wellwood, stating Harold’s intention to resign from being a Riverview Trustee. Brett Musgrave moved to accept Harold’s resignation, and Vanessa Churchill seconded the motion - motion carried.

Fred Barton told the congregation that he would also like to resign, from being a trustee. A motion was made by David Osborne to acknowledge Fred’s resignation, and was seconded by Norval Mitchell - motion carried.

Betty Allen said that she would like to resign as an Elder. Marge Wagner made a motion for this, and Vanessa Churchill seconded the motion - motion carried.

The next item of business was the discussion of Annual Reports. Chairman Murray Wellwood named each report - beginning with the Riverview Session, and following along in succession with each named group, as listed in our annual report, and finishing with the Riverview Stewards. Mabel Wellwood indicated that some words were missing from the UCW’s Statement of Purpose in the Annual Report. (The following is what should be printed in the report: Statement of Purpose - To unite women of the congregation for the total mission of the church and to provide a medium through which they may express their loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and service.) Vanessa Churchill mentioned that some of the wording in the Dorcas’ Place report, regarding the name of an organization was incorrect. The printed name in the Dorcas’ report states, “Integrity for Equine Rescue Have for Equine Rescue, and it should say, Integrities Haven Equine Rescue Centre.

There was discussion around ‘removing’ Winnie Allum as a trustee, as she is unable to continue in that role. Betty Allen O’Neill moved to remove Winnie from the group of trustees, and it was seconded by Mabel Wellwood - motion carried.

Norval Mitchell moved to adopt the annual reports as presented and the motion was seconded by Mabel Wellwood - motion carried.

The Dowell-Donaldson Memorial Fund statement was presented and reviewed. Please see attached copy of the statement.

Marge Wagner began to review the financial statement, as outlined in the annual report. She highlighted that a couple of the women’s groups within our church (Dorcas’ Place and the UCW) have contributed significantly to our finances - in the range of $22,000! There was discussion around the large increase in the Pastoral Assessment amount, rentals of the CE centre, rent for the Miller house - and specifically, the status of the Miller house - with regard to a timetable for the intended tenants - and when they might arrive. A question was raised regarding insurance coverage, and whether an “empty” house might raise some coverage implications. Chairman Murray Wellwood asked Fred Barton to investigate this query with our insurance company.

The Ministry and Personnel Committee had two items to propose, that would affect the budget - so they were presented at this point. The first item, involved a membership fee with the Royal Canadian College of Organists - of which Martha Healy is a member. On behalf of the M&P Committee, Joan Gallant recommended that we pay for Martha’s membership fee. Al Wallace moved that we pay the membership fee and the motion was seconded by Fred Barton - motion carried. The second item proposed by the M&P Committee involved the physical cleaning of the church. For the past several years (~7) there has been no money budgeted for outside janitorial services. Therefore, the members of the church have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the church is cleaned. The M&P Committee understood that some of the current (cleaning) volunteers were frustrated with their tasks, and attempted to alleviate that work, by creating a budget ‘item’. There was a great deal of discussion around the prospect of budgeting for outside cleaning services, and it was quite evident that the thought of such a direction was not popular with several people. Alan Gallant moved that we budget for $5000 for outside cleaning services and the motion was seconded by Reeta Sweeney. The motion was defeated.

Marge Wagner moved to accept the budget as read and it was seconded by Vanessa Churchill - motion carried.

Marge proposed the transfer of funds ($8000) from the Miller house account to the Riverview Building Fund, so that mortgage payments could be covered. Vanessa Churchill was opposed to this suggestion - she would prefer the Miller house funds remain in their own account. Marge made a motion that the funds be moved to the Building Fund, and it was seconded by Steven Allen – motion carried.

Murray Wellwood read the Auditor’s Report, that was signed by himself and Claire Mulroney. There was one item that Murray queried, that concerned a fee for a safety deposit box. Fred Barton said that he had been to the bank to inquire about the safety deposit box; but was denied access. Fred Barton moved to adopt the Auditor’s Report as read, and it was seconded by Lois MacKeil - motion carried. There was further discussion around the signing officers for the safety deposit box - particularly with naming the specific officers. Marge Wagner is one of the officers, Pat Spicer is the second, and the third name/person is currently unknown. Fred Barton moved that our three signing officers go to the bank to access the safety deposit box, and it was seconded by Eunice Fizzard - motion carried.

The next item of business was to discuss the new governance model. Reverend Catherine MacDonald presented her slide show, regarding the new model - and was open to any/all questions that arose. There was quite a bit of discussion around the proposed, new model; and a few people expressed still feeling ‘uninformed’ enough to adequately make a decision. A show of hands indicated that more people were reluctant to vote on the new model that those ready to vote. Since the time was getting closer to 9pm, it was decided that this important discussion happen sometime in the future, when the members of our congregation have had a better chance to inform themselves and ultimately, make a decision. It was further decided that the item of Cooperative Ministry also be ‘bumped’ to the next meeting, when more discussion could occur. Reverend Catherine urged us to have “full discussions” on both of these matters. The date for the next meeting was scheduled for Monday, March 27, 2017 at 7pm.

Murray Wellwood suggested the creation of a Miller House Committee - to oversee the property and management of it. He suggested that three people would be a good number for such a committee. Due to a lack of time to properly discuss this item, it was deferred to the next meeting. Bill Parks inquired if there was anything we could do to help the HEART society, with the process of helping refugees make their way to Canada faster. Murray said he would speak to Leno, to see if we could help in any way.

Murray Wellwood thanked Marge Wagner for her on-going contributions to our church - as its treasurer; and the other volunteers as well, that currently clean our church. Murray asked for a motion to send a card of recognition to both, Elmsdale Landscaping and Lenny Gallant to acknowledge their efforts with maintaining our parking lot, and helping out during funeral services. Lois MacKeil moved that we recognize such efforts and the motion was seconded by Debbie Hall - motion carried.

Murray Wellwood thanked the congregation for his sixteen years of service. However, it is us that must thank him for his dedication over these many years! Reverend Catherine told us that Murray has agreed to volunteer to be Nine Mile River’s treasurer, as these days, they sometimes lack the personnel necessary to fill these roles. We thank him for this further service.

GOVERNANCE AS SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

In April of 2017, Riverview UC began a one year trial period with a new and very different governance structure.

Purpose of Governance

1. The purpose of governance structures in the church is to provide a framework in which decisions can be made in a just, faithful and participatory fashion.

2. No structure can entirely stop those who are determined to force their will or ideas on others. A structure does give the community an opportunity, however, to exercise some control over its life.

3. Ideally, a governance structure is flexible enough to meet the needs of the present day and allow for development of new visions and hopes.

The Two Core Values of this Model

Faith Formation is at the heart of all we do as Christian Community. The practice of faith formation and spiritual deepening needs to be a part of its core leadership group, informing their decisions and their encouragement of the life and ministry of the congregation.

Leadership needs to be encouraged in all areas of the congregation, both from those who have been part of the congregation for many years as well as those who have come more recently.

The way of offering leadership needs to be made easily accessible. One should not need to learn all the details of a committee structure to offer leadership. This model offers simplicity and agility and encourages energy throughout the entire congregation.

This model is based on one that was developed by the Rev. Catherine Smith while at the Sackville PC. Opening statements of purpose written by the Rev. Dr. Ross Bartlett. We are thankful for their leadership and creativity.

It was agreed that our meetings would be September - June and we would meet at 7 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of those months.

Our meeting guidelines, as jointly determined are as follows:

1. Only one person speaks at a time.  No interruptions.2. Conversations, especially spiritual (mostly during grounding meetings) are

confidential and not to be shared outside the meeting. 3. Be respectful4. Speak in the "I".5. Cell phones on silent.6. Be on time.7. Accept others' ideas8. Attendance is crucial. 9. Be positive10. Be open and honest.

Elmsdale Pastoral Charge Annual Report 2017 Page 35

Page 36: elmsdalepastoralchargedotcom.files.wordpress.com…  · Web view– that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs

The Shape of the Model

One of the first things to know is that this way of governance ensures that all the responsibilities of governing bodies contained in The Manual of the United Church of Canada (2016) are fulfilled. These responsibilities with the relevant sections are listed later in the document.

The Executive is the governing body of the congregation, equivalent in function, though not in its way of functioning, to a congregational Board or Council or Session/Stewards Governance Model.  The name was chosen to reflect this body’s close engagement with the whole congregation through Ministry Areas and Circles of Service facilitated by the Elders. It is a closer relationship to the whole congregation, as ministry opportunities come directly to the council, either through the Elders or the Idea Board.

There is no need for a Nominating Committee since necessary positions are filled by the Executive’s work with the congregation. Anyone who volunteers or whose name is put forward as a member of the Executive has the name brought to a congregational meeting for ratification, as are names of Trustees, Ministry and Personnel and Presbytery Representatives.

The Executive consists of a Chair, a Treasurer, a Communicator, a representative from the Trustees, and Elders. There are three or four Elders. The Minister attends all Executive meetings. The Executive meets approximately twice monthly between September and June, once for spiritual grounding in scripture and of the congregation and once to conduct business.

Circles are important as we work with this governance shape. We imagine the congregation as an open circle of ministry in the world, nurturing those who move in and around it. The Executive encourages and supports the ministry of the congregational circle. We envision four areas of ministry, with communication about and between them facilitated by conversation at both the business meetings and spiritual grounding gatherings.

Worship and Faith Formation: Worship, Sunday School, Study Groups, Choir Outreach: Dorcas Place, Prayer Pals, Seniors’ Group, John Howard Society,

Food Bank. Pastoral Care and Inreach: UCW, Website and Communication Finance & Property: Trustees, Treasurer, Stewards

Within these areas will be Circles of Service, some permanent, such as Worship, UCW and Sunday School, Stewards, some only for a particular task or season. The Executive is responsible for ensuring that work is carried out in the areas of ministry identified by the congregation.

Elmsdale Pastoral Charge Annual Report 2017 Page 36

Page 37: elmsdalepastoralchargedotcom.files.wordpress.com…  · Web view– that for whatever reason Rev. Catherine did not want us to grow. First of all, I agree that stacking the chairs

Communication Boards

One of the tools at the disposal of the Executive, and the congregation, for encouraging new life are the Communication Boards.

These are magnetic boards in the entryway. Forms for inviting Circles of Service are held in a folder to one side of the board. Each week an elder or elders check this folder for new invitations from individuals in the congregation. If an idea supports the ministry/mission of the congregation it can be posted immediately on the Board.  If money is required to support the idea, Elders will consider it in consultation with the Executive.  If Elders are unsure whether the idea supports the congregation’s ministry/mission, they may bring it to the Executive for conversation.

Once a new invitation is posted on the Idea Board, the Elder(s) provide encouragement and support to the person who is inviting the Circle of Service. Support may include help with or suggestions for communication about the group, directions regarding booking of space and following up with the person as the group proceeds.

Terms of Reference for the Executive

All those on the Executive of the Congregation (EOC) attend the Grounding Gatherings, described elsewhere, ten times per year. These gatherings are in addition to the meetings that tend the ongoing work and administration of the congregation. The responsibilities include all those contained in The Manual 2016 (UCC) and the relevant sections are listed.

The Chair (7.6.1) Call meetings Prepare the agenda in conjunction with the minister Lead the Executive Governance meetings by facilitating the conversation,

making sure each person has an opportunity to speak. Be aware of and attend to (with the Executive) requirements for congregational

life as per the Manual Act as spokesperson for the congregation

The Communicator (7.6.2) Records minutes Distributes approved minutes Keeps records (minutes) current and in order Receives and brings Correspondence to the meeting alerting Chair and Minister

prior to the meeting

The Treasurer Reports regularly on finances As per Manual and Financial Handbook

The Elders The Manual of the United Church of Canada in its definition of Elders gives us a place from which to begin. “People elected by the congregation or pastoral charge for their wisdom, caring, spiritual discernment and other gifts of the Spirit. They must be members of the congregation . . . unless the Presbytery makes an exception” (Manual 2016: 7.2).

In this governance model, we build on this definition. We make explicit the role of Elders to intentionally nurture and develop the connection between the ministry and mission of the congregation and the gifts of individuals within the congregation. This connection is kept before, and informs, the decision-making process of Executive.

This model include 3 – 4 Elders.

Qualities Good listener An active participant in the life of the congregation Committed to individual and group/congregations’ faith formation Values and encourages shared leadership Approachable in a variety of ways Open to the emerging ministries to which we are being called

Spiritual Grounding

That unless we are ill or have and emergency or a commitment that cannot be moved we will be present.

That because we will gather with a prayer, music or a reflective piece of some kind and perhaps a check in, we will arrive on time to participate in this centering moment.

That we hold ourselves to the practice of meeting, not for planning or problem solving or arriving at answers. We meet as a way of opening us to the narrative of Scripture and of the congregation in ways that will deepen our spiritual practice and our relationships and inform our direction and decisions at administrative/management meetings of the Executive.

While we may talk outside the gathering about what arose in us or for us during the time together, what we learned or a new direction that emerged for us; we will share that without attaching names or identifiers or private information that has been shared.

After this we will spend about 20-25 minutes in some kind of conversation with Scripture. Whoever is facilitating the gathering that day will chose a Scripture they'd like to work with and will bring it to the group in whatever way they are comfortable.  This could be Lectio Divina, Visio Divina, or some other method. You might choose to bring a question that rises out of the text for you and to jump start a discussion with that.  Or you might bring a piece of art relating to the text. Or you might invite us into Scripture some other way. The choice is yours.

For the narrative of the congregation feel free to bring something that has struck you about our congregational life, a particular situation, a hope or a more general wondering.

In November we invited Rev. Catherine Smith to come and lead us in a Grounding Gathering session. Most of us came away feeling better equipped to lead a grounding gathering, we are grateful for her continued support. She is working on an evaluation tool for us to use at the one year anniversary.

We have a number of ministry areas and the reports are grouped together under those areas.

FAITH FORMATION REPORT

There is a long standing group that meets on Tuesdays from 1-2 pm; a highlight this past year was reading and discussing Grounding by Diana Butler Bass. This group undertook Jesus 24/7, a Lenten Study by Janice MacLean and an Advent Study which focused on the work of Brené Brown.

Rev. Catherine led an evening group using the resource, Exploring Faith Questions, which had 11 participants. Much lively discussion and five people made a profession of faith in the spring.

Rehearsal is every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., after the 9:30 a.m. service. There are also extra rehearsals at 8:45 a.m. as needed. The Choir leads the service on Maritime Conference Sunday as well as taking leadership roles in services whenever asked e.g. dramatic readings, thematic music (Advent 2017), Pentecost Sunday music. Also, members of our Choir represented Riverview with their participation in the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ Advent Lessons and Carols at All Saints’ Anglican Cathedral, Halifax. Our choir is always open and receptive to new ideas and continues to grow. It is our hope that our music helps to uplift and enhance the liturgy of the church, and that we are humble ambassadors of Riverview to our community and beyond.

We had a great year in 2017. One of the highlights was our end of the year picnic at Betty Allen’s. I would like to thank Amanda Tate for her years of service in involvement with Sunday School.

In the fall of 2017, we have switched our curriculum program to Spark Rotation. Now we can do different things like showing a cartoon of Abraham and Sarah that delighted the small children. The children enjoying the New and Old Testament from our Spark Bible Story book. The program has several workshops like videos, games, science and crafts based around a theme. I always find hope in my fellow teacher Vanessa returning for another year. It was great that Amanda Wood decided to join us.

One of the events we look forward to is the preparation and performance of our annual Christmas play. It brings me joy and brings hope thinking how Simone Wood stood in for Baby Jesus.

I and my fellow teachers, Amanda and Vanessa look forward to guiding our children though another great year in 2018.

Expenses for the year were Spark Rotation Curriculum $193 and Spark Story Bible $35.

We would like to thank everyone from our congregation and Friends of Riverview who support us with generous donations of clothing, household goods, toys, books, etc. Without your help and support and the generosity of others in the community, we could not exist.

We are proud of our Outreach Program in which we provide assistance to our community and surrounding areas. We give monetary donations to Caring and Sharing, Phoenix House, Adsum House, Bryony House, Brunswick Street Mission, Out of the Cold Program, Truro Homeless Shelter, Metro Turning Point, Soul’s Harbour and also supported Talim Island in Philippines.

We also took 88 bags of clothing, bedding, and footwear to Brunswick Street Mission, clothing, household goods and kitchen items to Phoenix House, bedding, boots, socks, hoodies, jeans, vests, flashlights and bus money to Out of the Cold Shelter, a program at St. Matthew’s United Church in Halifax, boxes of books to Masonic Lodge, books, household goods and toys to Beacon House in Lower Sackville, belts, mittens, gloves and socks to Truro Homeless Shelter. We also support, The Integrity Haven for Equine Rescue and we thank Dave Mailman for picking the bags of clothing up on a regular basis.

There are many other people who assist us in ways that are too numerous to mention and we thank each and every one of you for everything you do. It is very much appreciated.

The committee and volunteers continue to enjoy the intrinsic rewards of bringing relief and comfort to members of the community who need it. Often we recognize the Spirit at work in the words and actions of both clients and volunteers. There is a subtle joy in the knowledge that we can make a difference, however small. In the coming year, we hope to offer the same caring approach always hoping to emulate Dorcas in showing God’s love for the needy.

JOHN HOWARD SOCIETY

John Howard Society Restorative Program is one of nine agencies in the province who administer the restorative justice program in Nova Scotia. The agency contracts with the Nova Scotia Department of Justice to deliver the restorative program in Colchester/East Hants. Their mandate is to deliver the NSRJ program to youths and adults.

At the conclusion of a restorative justice conference session a contract is created that often requires a person who has caused harm to provide a number of community service hours.

During the past year Riverview United Church has agreed to be a “Placement Contract For Community Service Work” and has received approximately forty hours of cleaning and painting services this year.

Al Wallace is a volunteer with John Howard Society and your designated contact person if you as a chair person have needs with which we may assist.

INREACH

Pastoral Care Team – Rev. Catherine gathered a few people together in the spring of 2017 to talk about pastoral care. For a variety of reasons, this never got off the ground. We will explore this once again in 2018.

It can be a bit challenging to define what is inreach and what is outreach. For instance, the refreshing of the entryway is both. An Entryway Circle was struck to take a look at how we could refresh and revitalize the entryway to make it a warm, welcoming environment for both our regular membership and those who might be in the building for a variety of purposes. Community hours through the John Howard Society along with the Stewards made this possible!

The Refreshed Entryway

Communication is another category that crosses over inreach and outreach. The website and Facebook pages in particular are ways that our congregations keep up to date with what is going on and also a place for the community to check us out.

6. Inspection of the steel roof over the sanctuary was carried out and a quotation for modifications was received on November 8th. The quote has not been dealt with as of December 31st, 2017.

New Committee Members

Brett Musgrave agreed to be a trustee in October.Allan Gallant and Kim Horne agreed to be on the Miller House Committee in

October.

A Riverview Core Value – Caring For and Being Open to One Another

The above Core Value has been evident as the Trustees have carried out their mandate. A few significant building issues have arisen this year and there has been an abundant display of cohesiveness among the participating members of the congregation when dealing with these important items. There has also been an uplifting feeling of accomplishment as solutions have been implemented.

Respectfully submitted,

FACILITIES

Riverview United Church and its facilities has been a very busy place this year. It has not only been used by our congregation but also by the wider community. Our doors were/are open to weekly meetings of A New Beginning, Brownies, Pathfinders and Sparks. Dorcas Thrift Shop operates one evening and four mornings a week. Other community meetings and our own church meetings take place on a regular basis. Church fundraisers such as luncheons, suppers, pie making and yard sales use this facility. The UCW uses space for monthly meetings, fundraisers and funeral receptions. The hall was rented this year as a polling location for Elections Nova Scotia in May, a tea and sale in Nov., a children’s' Christmas party in Dec., weekly chair yoga classes in the fall and dance classes (Sunday afternoons and Wed. evenings in the winter, spring and fall plus five sessions in the summer). The sanctuary was also used for a meeting of the 100 Women Who Care, a concert by the Caledonian Orchestra and the UCW Spring Rally. The East Hants Community Chorale also used the sanctuary for their weekly practices.

STEWARDS

Members: Ferne Barton, Edna DeMan, Margaret Hines, Kim Horne, Terry Jones, Brett Musgrave, Dave Osborne, Bill Parks, Eunice Parks, Gary Smiley, John Wagner, Margery Wagner,

The Stewards Committee has had a very busy and productive year. As I reflect back on 2017, I have to say: I’m so proud of the work of these dedicated volunteers who have worked so hard assisting Riverview United meet our financial goals. We continue to raise funds for the Riverview congregation through our suppers, yard sales, paint nights, plant sales, concerts, etc. The stewards are constantly searching for new exciting methods to fund raise. We are always open to suggestions and look forward to exploring any and all new ideas.

I have to thank everyone who has contributed to our fundraising. To all the wonderful bakers who provide desserts for our turkey supper, to the cooks in the kitchen, to the members who work the dining room floor, to the food servers, to the dish washers and kitchen help. “Thank you.” To you, our congregation members and friends who assisted by raising funds, working events, and donating products and your time. “Thank you.” To everyone who purchased whatever we were selling. “Thank You.”

The suppers, yard sales, paint nights do not work without your participation and support and for that we thank you. If you’re interested in becoming a steward or just want to attend a meeting, please contact any of the members or myself.

The stewards meet the second Tuesday of each month except July and August. We are always interested in your input.

Respectfully Submitted, Bill Parks
