Welcome to Ellis County, the most remarkable, hospitable, interesting and amazing of all Texas’ 254 counties.

For the record, I freely admit I’m biased. For the past 16 years I’ve had the chance to live and work and

be involved with some of the most wonderful, caring, compas-sionate people I’ve been blessed to cross paths with during my half-century of life.

Of all of the places I’ve been and the adventures I’ve had, I choose to live in Ellis County.

And for good reason.First of all, Ellis County is a great place to live,

work and raise a family. The people are warm and friendly — there is a real sense of community here. It’s a place where folks still take the time to get to know their neighbors, and where helping each other is part of our way of life.

We take great pride in our communities — each of our cities is filled with rich history, yet never willing to rest on past accomplishments.

Always, we are looking to the future and intent on explor-ing ways to improve our quality of life, while at the same time, preserving the historic fabric that makes Ellis County unique, charming and special.

When you move to here, you can expect to be welcomed with open arms. You can also expect to be invited to join one of the many community-oriented organizations that work throughout the year to improve the community.

You see, folks here are always willing to roll up their sleeves to help out a good cause.

Since arriving in Waxahachie 16 years ago, I’ve been fortunate to share so many “good news” stories about our communities, and the many people and organi-zations working hard to make a difference.

I always get a chuckle when I talk to people from the Metroplex who think we’re “a mil-lion miles away.” The fact is, downtown Waxahachie is exactly 26 miles from downtown Dallas on Interstate Highway 35E. It’s actually a little shorter drive from Ennis on Interstate Highway 45, as well as from Midlothian on U.S. Highway 67. And, I’ve driven from Waxahachie to DFW International Airport in 29 minutes. (Granted, it was not during rush hour and I was, as my friends in the car club refer to it as “driving briskly.”) But the point is, we’re not that far away from the second biggest metro-politan area in Texas.

And while we’re growing, Ellis County still maintains a lot of its agricultural heritage. We have lots of farms — although not nearly as many as we did a century ago when we produced more cotton than any other region in the world. While we still produce cotton, our farmers also grow sunflowers and corn and you’ll find several ranches with cattle grazing in the pastures — as well as a few ranches where the buffalo still roam.

But our economy is very diverse. We have state-of-the-art factories and distribution

centers.Triumph is building its new aircraft manufactur-

ing facility in Red Oak. Midlothian is home to the state’s premier cement manufacturing companies (as well as one of the nation’s top steel mills). Ennis and Waxahachie also boast a diverse number of plants — with more on the way.

Tying in with our rich history, tourism plays a huge part of our economy for every city in Ellis County. Every year Ennis hosts the National Polka Festival, which brings in folks from all over the world. It’s also home to the Motorplex drag strip, which is home to the NHRA Fall Nationals, bringing in the top racing teams to compete for the NHRA speed title. I can’t forget the Ennis Bluebonnet Festival, which is another top draw for folks from Texas and beyond. In Waxahachie, we have the annual Crape Myrtle Festival (which coincides with our

Fourth of July festivities) and in the fall, the Texas Country Reporter Festival hosted by Texas Country Reporter Bob Phillips.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Throughout the year, there’s always something going on with lots of things to do and see — without ever leaving the borders of Ellis County.

One thing that’s impor-tant for every parent is education.

We’ve got great schools.Pick a city and I can

share a dozen stories about the good things that are going on. From Avalon to Waxahachie, there’s no shortage of success stories of the amazing things that our students are accomplishing.

I do have to share one example though, and that’s the story of Global High.

I had the opportunity to be part of the planning committee that helped launch this unique, amazing public high school that opened its doors to its first freshman class in 2007. Global High, open to any student regardless of home district, is a public Early College High School operated in partnership between the

centers.

Waxahachie Independent School District, Navarro College and the University of Texas-Tyler. Using project-based learning with curriculum geared toward core STEM (science, technology, en-gineering and math) courses, students earn college credit while also earning their high school diploma. Since its first gradua-tion class in 2011, more than half of Global grads received their associate’s degree before their high school diploma (because the college holds its commencement a week prior to the district’s com-mencement).

And the projects Global students are doing are truly amazing (the engineering lab includes a wind tunnel and a 3D printer). When you walk in the door, you know this isn’t like any high school you’ve ever seen before. I’m so proud of this school — and the opportunities it is providing for our kids.

I’m proud of all of our schools.I’ll admit bias, but Ellis County has the most talented kids in

the world. From academic scholars to Eagle Scouts to Presidential Point

of Light honorees to nationally recognized athletes, our Ellis County communities shine with talented young people.

The opportunity to succeed is here. The doors are open. That’s one of the many things I like about this community. I

truly feel blessed to live in a place where everyone pulls together to help each other succeed.

Sure, we disagree from time to time, and yes, we’ve had our share of polarizing debates, particularly during election season.

But give us a cause, or a challenge, and watch us get to work.As a resident, you have to be excited by the teamwork that

takes place just about every day in our cities and towns between our city governments, our school boards and our many commu-nity organizations.

Together, we are making a difference. And yes, I’m very proud of our cities. It’s my home, and I know you’re going to feel the same way.By the way, once you get unpacked, stop by the paper and

we’ll have a cup of coffee. I’ll tell you how to get to Oma’s Jiffy Burger, or tell you which restaurant has the best catfish and who to call if you need to get your kids signed up for recreational sports.

Don’t be surprised if I ask you to volunteer for something, though. There are a couple of committees that I’m on that could use an extra hand.

Of course, I’ll have to give you the pitch for why you should subscribe to the paper. If you want to know what’s going on in the community, you absolutely need to read the Daily Light —

the best community newspaper in the state of Texas. We’ve got the awards to prove it.

If you like, I’d be happy to give you a tour around town. But we’ll also have to make a stop by the Waxahachie Civic Center and spend a few moments at the Ellis County Veterans Memorial. In-deed, it is one of the most moving and touching tributes to the men and women who have served in our nation’s armed services. And speaking of the civic center, this is another example of the vision and

leadership of our community. I do love showing off this town — from our diverse industrial base, to our agricultural heritage to the fantastic parks, there’s a lot to see and do. Give me a call; I’ll have the car waiting.

Until then, let me be the first to officially welcome you home.

The city of Ennis is considered the Bluebonnet Capitol of North Texas, but that is not the only thing the city has going for it.

As a southeastern suburb of Dallas, with a population of more than 18,000 people, Ennis is now home to TeleTech Holding Inc. The corporation has a major Medicare component in which employees serve corporate and business clients by assisting with enrollment, coverage and limitations with special licensed

agents that market this service to businesses.

City Manager Steve Howerton said he is thrilled to have such a major global business located in the city of Ennis.

“From an economic stand point, this huge,” Howerton said. “This means jobs for our people and revenue for our city. We couldn’t be

happier about having this company here.”Although the company has hired 400 employees, he said

the plan calls for a total of 800 employees. In a recent article, TeleTech Talent Acquisition Manager Tamika Daniels said now that the facility has reached 400 employees, new hires will slow down, but TeleTech has the capacity to launch another hiring campaign and add another 400 positions in the future.

Howerton expressed excitement about the growth of the city as he continued to talk about economic development. He said another corporation by the name of J Tech Automotive, a manufacturer for Nissan and Toyota is looking to add steering systems for Honda and Mazda in 2014. This means bringing 50 new jobs to the city, Howerton said.

“We can’t say enough about the growth of our city,” he said. “If you look at it, between those two companies it will add 850 new jobs.”

He said with each new job, that possibly means bringing more

families to the area or providing jobs for those already living in the area.

“This is very positive and encouraging,” he said. “It means a 12 percent increase in our economy, making our city an even better place to live.”

The grand opening of the Brookshire’s grocery store in May 2013 has also added an extra boost to the city’s economy How-erton said. The new 37,400 square foot store is a supermarket with a modern design that incorporates several energy efficient features.

In addition, several fast food chains are receiving face-lifts and being adding on to in an effort to meet the growing demands

of the population. Howerton said McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Dairy Queen are all in the process of being remodeled.

Howerton added he is looking forward to attracting people once again the city’s downtown area. He said that people can look forward to eating at those local downtown restaurants that were damaged during the May storm.

“We are about 80 percent back to where we were before the storm hit,” he said. “Several restaurants in the downtown area were hit pretty hard and are being rebuilt. So I look for that area to become just as popular and busy as it was before.

He said there were a total of five buildings damaged and all except one will be restored. To help with the repairs, the city of Ennis re-ceived a $750,000 debris grant from the state.

Howerton said whether someone is looking to make Ennis a destination for visiting or living, it’s one of those places centrally located so that people can “get to almost anywhere in Texas.”

Hi

an

m i d l o t h i a nIn Ellis CountyA special welcome from the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce:

Midlothian welcomes new residents and businesses to the community! conveniently located within 25 miles of both Dallas and Fort Worth, Midlothian is a city that has much to offer for both business and fun. Due to its industrial base and increasing number of retailers,

Midlothian has a lot to offer residents – quality churches, housing, health care options, schools and local parks, and shopping – all close to home.

the quality of life remains a top priority with the community as Midlothian grows. Education, health care and recreation facilities continue to be a major focus for community leaders. Within the city of Midlothian, ten parks, a civic center and a conference center offer the perfect setting for parties or

meetings, and serve as the backdrop for many community events throughout the year.

the Midlothian conference center offers small town hospitality in a modern, state-of-the-art 39,000-square-foot facility designed for special events. the facility can host a small, private affair or a large event for up to 1,000 guests.

Situated just south of Joe Pool Lake, one of the most popular lakes in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Midlothian boasts proximity to a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for all ages – including water skiing, fishing, swimming and picnicking.

in addition, travel to Midlothian is easy, thanks to the Mid-Way Regional airport that opened in 1992 to serve this rapidly growing area, as well as the u.S. Highway 287 Bypass that has made travel to historic downtown much easier. Downtown continues to see improvements, as new

businesses emerge and existing businesses revitalize their storefronts.

as the community grows, the nationally recognized Midlothian chamber of commerce serves an important role for business and tourism to the area. Representing more than 450 businesses in the Midlothian area, the membership continues to grow with the community, producing a significant

The secret is out as many are discovering the top class educa-tion, rural hometown feel, welcoming and growing community that Midlothian offers.

What makes Midlothian special is not any of these things alone, it is all these together with the people who work, live and find enjoyment in Dallas-Ft. Worth’s Southern Star.

“The great residents who choose to live here in Midlothian, more than any other aspect is what makes Midlothian a pleas-ant surprise when you discover it,” City Manager Don Hastings said.

The number one element that future residents find out about Midlothian is that its school district and learning facilities provide an education that surpasses state and national averages.

“Midlothian ISD and the community are one. We would be nothing without the parents, community members and volunteers who support our school system here,” MISD Superintendent Dr. Jerome Stewart said, and spoke on the district’s excellence in education. “It’s a source of pride that has nothing to do with me and everything to do with the great and wonderful people in our classrooms, administrators and support personnel. You see kind and loving people in all of the jobs we have.”

MISD’s graduating classes continually top state and national averages, but the district’s vision of “striving to be the leading learning organization in the nation” is not only about scoring well on the test.

“MISD offers a family-centered environment where both fac-ulty and staff care for each other, and just as importantly, love and care for our students,” Stewart said, adding that this type of atmosphere engages and encourages students to accomplish their goals and achieve their best, without teaching to the test.

“As the creators and designers of lessons, our teaching staff ’s personalities and expert practice of their craft show in each unique lesson,” he said. “Our students benefit from these engag-ing lessons and see their teacher’s shine as individuals who care and love for them unconditionally.”

To maintain that nurturing, family environment is a key com-mitment of the district, even as it opens its second high school, Midlothian Heritage High School, in 2014. Stewart noted that the new high school project continues to be under budget and ahead of schedule, illustrating the school board and administra-tion’s efficient use of taxpayer dollars.

As the Midlothian community grows and increases the dis-trict’s enrollment, the city and school district are working closely to ensure a steady, quality growth beneficial to the city as a whole.

“The city council and staff do a wonderful job of managing Midlothian’s growth patterns and we benefit from a strong rela-tionship with the city,” Stewart said. “Don Hastings and I work closely and there is a strong rapport and open communication between the school board and city council.”

Hastings agreed that the city cannot do it alone and has a strong partner in MISD, which is a source of pride for the

district and a magnet that attracts initial interest from future residents.

“Once attracted by the school district’s successes, people visit our community and that’s when they have to decide if this is where they want to call home. In many cases that does happen,” Hastings said. Newcomers and visitors to Midlothian find a growing community of 18,000-plus, conveniently located just 26 miles south of Dallas or 27 miles southeast of Fort Worth.

“To have a quality community you need balanced growth. We have that in Midlothian and are proud of our strong business and retail sector, which helps serve the residential sector and vice versa,” Hast-ings said.

For those who do not live and work in Midlothian, its positioning between along major corridors U.S. Highway 287 and 67 allows residents to easily com-mute into the heart of the Metroplex.

“The simple fact is that you can live in Midlothian and until your future job finds its way here, you can easily commute from the southern side of the Metro-plex where you won’t find the traffic congestion and

tolls roads that rule north of Dallas,” Hastings said. When not working outside or inside the city, Midlothian offers

a host of amenities, parks and cultural facilities within a few minutes drive of many, various neighborhoods that offer afford-able housing with low property taxes.

“The city council through the years has made it their goal to bring those quality of life features to families, with a big part of that being recreation and sports,” Hastings said.

Through the contribution of industries and landowners in the community, Midlothian has set aside passive open space for natural trails, wildlife watching and tranquility while also creat-ing many active recreational areas for football, soccer, baseball and many other sports, with an extensive trail system for walk-ers, joggers and cyclists.

“A parks system is an important feature for quality of life, but we are also proud of our joint library with MISD with its out-reach and digital book services and our senior citizen center that could rival any senior center with its slate of programs it offers,” Hastings said. “Our Mid-Way Regional Airport is accessible to private and business aircraft, and our conference center is per-fect for corporate events and as a cultural center for weddings, family reunions, club meetings and so on.”

Supporting these amenities and residential housing is Midlo-thian’s thriving economy which includes industry and large em-ployers, small businesses and entrepreneurs, retail and services.

Whether its corporate citizens or newcomers, Midlothian is welcoming to any new residents.

If you haven’t heard, the secret’s out. Midlothian is a city worth checking out to see where you fit into this family-oriented community nestled in the southern DFW area.

Things to do, Places to see

Page 24: Ellis County Welcome Guide 2013

Signs of recession ending are taking place as new develop-ment takes place all over the city of Red Oak. Construction crews are active as the buildings they construct or remodel will be the homes for commercial, retail, restaurants and industrial uses.

One of the largest developments that is continuing to expand is the manufacturing facility owned and operated by the Tri-umph Group, Inc. The Triumph Group is an aerospace company, of which Vought Aircraft is a division. Vought was purchased by Triumph in June 2010.

Triumph broke ground in November 2011 on new 250,000-square-foot, $70 million manufacturing facility. The building was completed in about eight to eight and a half months and Triumph received its certificate of occupancy in September. This facility will manufacture wings for the Bombardier Global 7000/8000 business jet and will employee 275 people at full capacity.

Triumph is constructing a second building on the site, which is nearing completion. The $100 million facility is 715,00 square feet in size and will manufacture commercial and private aircraft items for the government. Triumph’s facility is located off of Methodist Street in Red Oak.

“Having Triumph here in Red Oak does several things for us. It creates an economy. It brings in 1,000 new employees to the community who will be making wages and reinvesting those within Red Oak and the surrounding areas,” Red Oak City Manager Todd Fuller said. “It has turned into somewhat of an anchor because they will have other industries or businesses that partner with them that are also interested in the area.”

Fuller said one of the companies that has moved into the city because of Triumph is NFI. According to its website NFI is a logistics, transportation and distribution company. NFI provides logistic service to Triumph and has leased a facility next to Tri-umph’s new site, Fuller said.

Fuller added that a company called the Walton Group, which is a large land development and investment company, has purchased property across the road from Triumph on the north side of Ovilla Road. The city will be working with Walton on a development plan on how they will able create infrastructure and roads for businesses to come in.

In 2013 Red Oak has had 42 permits and certificates of oc-cupancy come into city offices to be processed. Some of the new retail stores and restaurants include businesses such as Burger King, Walgreens, Dickey’s Barbecue, Walmart, Panda Express, Lonestar Burger Bar, Vintage Bank, Muddy House of Coffee and Deli, Home Instead Senior Care, Fearless Dental, Hawks Auto Care and Virunde Salon and Spa.

Fuller said one of the companies that came into the city is Universal Design Center. This company works to create outdoor

spaces in a person’s backyard by using pergolas, water features, outdoor barbecue pits or playground equipment. Universal is located at 3708 North U.S. Highway 77.

Another large retailer in the city that has undergone a com-plete remodel is Brookshire’s Food and Pharmacy located at 105 E. Ovilla Road. The 40,513-square-foot store features a brand new storefront, new checkout stands and modern décor. The deli has a new sushi bar and expanded dining area with free Wi-Fi.

Customers can purchase homemade fudge, freshly made tortillas and Mexican Bolillos in the bakery. Cakes and other baked goods can be viewed as they are being decorated.

Red Oak’s Economic Development Corporation has worked with owners of substandard build-ings within the city. Through their efforts several properties located off of Interstate Highway 35E and Highway 342 have not only been brought up to code but have been made more attractive. Fuller said on one of the metal building that was rehabilitated the

owner added new masonry façade.Red Oak has also seen development pick up from homebuild-

ers. Several subdivisions the city is seeing new lots being added. Some of the subdivisions that are seeing growth happen is in

the Coyote Ridge subdivision where 100 new lots are being added and in the Springfield Lakes subdivision where 54 lots are being added.

One of the long-term goals the city has for economic de-velopment is to create a new retail area on the northwest quadrant of I-35E and Ovilla Road across from Walmart.

There is a great deal of open space that is ready to develop but an anchor retailer would be needed to get it going. By having an anchor retailer it would help to bring in other smaller busi-nesses.

Fuller said economic development is a long-term process and it is tough to put a it on a timeline of when it is gong to happen. Walmart purchased the land for its location at 100 Ryan Dr. in December 2003 and just opened its doors last year.

Fuller said the success of economic development in the city would not have been possible without the formation of some great partnerships. Helping to aid the city in these area include the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce, the Red Oak Independent School District, Ellis County and State Rep. Jim Pitts Office.

Red Oak Economic Development Director Lee McCleary said the city is in the right place and the right time for development. The city is working hard to capitalize and optimize the position that they are in.

w a x a h a c h i eIn Ellis CountyWelcome to Waxahachie - the Picture Perfect Town!

the colors of Waxahachie are as rich and diverse as the people who fill its streets – warm and inviting, vibrant and diverse. it’s a “Picture Perfect” setting that begs for more than a passing glance.

More than 150 years in the making, Waxahachie is a community that takes great pride in its rich heritage, which is evident by the historically preserved buildings and homes throughout the city. though modern, progressive and thriving, the city’s pulse resonates with the history of texas. Strolling through the Historic Downtown District anchored by the state’s “Most Photographed courthouse,” you can still see remnants of the famed Shawnee trail that once served as the major thoroughfare in the state’s early development.

Designated in the early 1900s as Queen of the cotton Belt, Waxahachie has grown to be known as the Gingerbread city for the ornate woodwork found on many of the historic homes, as well as being designated the crape Myrtle capital of texas. Waxahachie also claims the title of Movie capital of texas. With more than 30 motion pictures and three academy award films shot in our community, it is recognized as being “Picture Perfect” by the movie industry.

Whether shopping for treasures in the downtown antique shops and boutique stores, dining in our award-winning restaurants, taking part in the historic tour, enjoying a family outing in one of our many parks and recreational facilities or just visiting with the friendly folks who call Waxahachie home (there are no strangers in Waxahachie – just friends we haven’t met yet), come and discover for yourself what makes Waxahachie “Picture Perfect.”

at the end of the day, don’t be surprised if you find yourself wanting to be part of the picture.

I wanted this story to be special. There is so much to say about Waxahachie, it’s impossible

to scratch the surface of this amazing community in the small space that I’ve been provided for this column.

I thought about writing about Waxahachie’s his-tory. How a century ago it was known as the “Queen City of Cotton” for producing more cotton than any place in the world. Or, it’s unique collection of his-toric collection of Gingerbread homes. Or how 1992 it came a few votes short in Congress from today being the scientific capitol of the world because of the discoveries that would have been made at the Superconducting Super Collider.

I thought about writing about our schools and the amazing things our kids are accomplishing. I could write about on that, because our education system not only of-fers our kids an opportunity to succeed in life, we are constantly developing new initiatives and programs that put an emphasis on academics — especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.

I thought about writing about our economic development ini-tiatives and how we are constantly expanding our economy with new businesses and industries — including the construction of a new Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie campus that will open in 2014 at the intersection of Interstate Highway 35E and U.S. Highway 287 Bypass. And by the way, that’s just the tip of our economic development iceberg. We’re also in the middle of a major downtown development project that once complete in 2015, will rival the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff and the Dallas Design District.

I also thought about writing about our quality of life in Waxahachie and all of the family-friendly events that we have throughout the year. From our parks to our hike and bike trail to our sports complex to our world class senior citizens center, to our many youth and adult recreational leagues, there’s never a shortage of things to do and places to go.

But then I got to thinking about what makes Waxahachie truly special and it occurred to me that no one could ever tell the story of our city without talking about the people who make so truly special.

Our diversity, in many ways, reflects a microcosm of America. Our hospitality and our ability to work together for a common cause or the greater good, sets us apart from any other city in the nation.

Let me share a few, brief stories with you that are typical of daily life in our community.

In the late 1990s, the Leadership Waxahachie class (a pro-gram developed by the Chamber of Commerce to train future community leaders), identified the need for the city to have a civic center and sports complex. Jim Chapman (who now serves as a county court at law judge), lead a team of dedicated indi-viduals who sparked a movement that led to the funding and construction of the Waxahachie Civic Center and Waxahachie

Sports Complex facilities that we enjoy today.Seeing a need and pointing it out is easy. Taking ownership

and overcoming obstacles is not. But then again, that happens a lot. For example, the city just opened two new park facilities (a

disc golf course and the first dog park), both projects initiated (and funded) through a Leadership Waxa-hachie class project.

Another story began about five years ago when Greg Compton walked into the Daily Light with an idea to establish an Ellis County chapter of the nonprofit Honor Flight organization. For those unfamiliar with Honor Flight, it is an amazing pro-gram. Each chapter raises funds to fly World War II veterans from their community to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial — which by the way, wasn’t

constructed until 60 years after the war. While there were a lot of naysayers, there was also an abundance of folks who joined hands with Greg in making it possible. All told, Ellis County Honor Flight raised enough funds to take more than 150 World War II veterans from our community, providing them with a trip each and every one them have said was “one of the best experi-ence of their life.” The stories those men and women told were priceless. In many cases, they shared their experience for the very first time while touring the memorial in Washington. I will never forget the comment made by Daisy Freeman, the wife of World War II veteran Vernon Freeman of Waxahachie. Highly decorated for his service, the Army veteran took part in several battles in Europe before being captured by the Germans and spending the remainder of the war in a POW camp. “Before the trip, we could get Vernon to say more than two words about the war. Now we can’t get him to shut up,” Daisy quipped. Vernon passed away earlier this year, but everyone connected to Honor Flight takes great pride in knowing what that trip meant to him, as well as his family.

During the past 16 years I’ve had the honor of sharing thou-sands of stories just like these — stories of neighbors coming together, getting involved and making a difference.

Yes, Waxahachie has a rich, colorful history that it takes great pride in. But we are always working toward the future and always exploring new ways to create new opportunities for our community.

And there’s always room at the table for anyone willing to roll up their sleeves and make a difference.

While I’m out of room for this column, I still have a treasure chest of stories to share about our community. If you would like to know more, give me a call and I’ll share a few more over a cup of coffee. I’ll even invite a few of my Honor Flight buddies.
