C laudelle Perreault was a rising star in the modelling world when she appeared on ELLE Canada’s first cover in the spring of 2001. Fresh off the runways of Valentino and Christian

Dior, the then 19-year-old had just walked 60 shows in three weeks. At the ELLE shoot, she waited patiently with famed photographer Gilles Bensimon while her Paris and New York agents decided wheth-er she could cut her super-long locks into a short shag. Fast-forward 10 years and she is still blissfully happy with that decision. “No, no re-grets at all!” she says. “I’ve actually just gone back to that length.”

A year after that shoot, Perreault surprised everyone by taking a hiatus from the modelling world. “I wanted to be closer to my horses,” says the native of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. “I also wanted to be with my family and friends.” She stud-ied anthropology and psychology at the Université de Montréal and later trained to be an air-traffic controller. She started directing planes at the Montreal Air Traffic Control Centre and also did some part-time modelling. Her passion, though, was being with horses: Perreault had ridden them since she was nine and bought her first foal when she was 20. “That experience really made me learn a lot about the true nature of horses,” she says. “I realized how important it is to use trust rather than forced submission. And that’s what I want to learn and promote.” For several years, she has been taking ethology courses with a private mentor and horse trainer to “become the next Cesar Millan, but for horses,” she says with a laugh. By 2012, Perreault and her boyfriend, Sylvain Milette, hope to open Espace Equestre, a nat-ural and holistic horse-boarding stable in Boucherville, Que. “Horses are almost an addiction now,” she says. “They teach you to be in the moment because you have to learn to listen, understand and react to the feedback they give you.” AMANDA WENEK
