I hope this issue finds everyone enjoying the beginning of the holiday season! We have had a great fall with lots of activities in the building. Please note that we are open on Sundays from noon-5:00 pm for the remainder of the American Impressionism exhibit. Please make sure you visit to see this wonderful exhibit before it closes January 11. As a member, you have complimentary tickets for admission according to your membership level. Visit soon to take advantage of this marvelous opportunity.

Please be sure to join us for Christmas at Hillside and HollymART. More details can be found on page 5 of this issue. We also have a new round of classes starting right after the first of the year, so be sure to check the listings and get going on your New Year’s resolution of doing something for yourself. Taking an art class at the Ella is a great way to do that and let your creative side grow at the same time!

Our travel committee has reconvened and planned a special trip to Detroit for a performance of the Joffrey Ballet. We are excited to offer this benefit for members once again and hope you are available to join us. If you have ideas for other trips or would like to be a part of the planning committee, please do not hesitate to contact me – we would love to have you!

Each issue, Hillside History features a look back at events and anecdotes from Ella Sharp’s life. This winter brings to light a rumored plot that, had it come to fruition, would have painted a very different picture for present-day Jackson.

In the early part of 1889 many letters were sent to John and Ella Sharp from family and friends questioning their

proposed move away from the city of Jackson. In a letter dated February 11, 1889, John’s sister Hattie inquired, “Do tell me something of your plans for the future. If you don’t stay where you are, when are you going and where will you go? Tell me about it.”

Further information was revealed in a letter written on March 10, by Ella’s aunt, Ellen Parker. Aunt Ellen, who lived in Iowa, wrote, “I was so much astonished at your news about your change of residence with thoughts of coming nearer to us that I’ve not quite recovered [from] it yet. And, is it really true, that you and John propose moving to Nebraska?”

“But in the name of all the fates, what would Mama (Mary Merriman) do with you away from Jackson? As she did not allude to this in her letter, so I, in my reply thought best to make no reference to what you wrote as perhaps you have not yet talked with her on the subject. I don’t believe she will ever give her consent to the change, for I don’t see how she could bear such a separation from you, now, at her time of life…Do write to me soon again and give the matter about telling your Mama of your plans very thoughtful consideration before you decide to do so.”

The rest of the 1889 letters give no further clues about the proposed move. Maybe Aunt Ellen had something to do with the Sharps’ decision not to head for Nebraska or maybe Mama had something to say. We may never know why the Sharps changed their minds, but what a good thing for Jackson that the move was never made. Just think, right now the Ella Sharp Museum could be located somewhere in Nebraska!

ARTrageous II New to the CollectionCedric Henry and Byron Reed are both Michigan residents whose artworks reflect their love for life, for art and for their communities.

Cedric Henry’s pursuit of art and education led him to study in Egypt. While he studied in places such as the Valley of the Kings and the ancient Luxor Temple, he developed a deep appreciation for ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic imagery. This inspired him to draw Egyptian hieroglyphic cartoons. His cartoons portray his sense of humor as well as his satirical political commentary.

Most of Byron Reed’s paintings portray his lively childhood days in the lower east side of Detroit. He grew up in a world of big bands and

zoot suits and his style of painting reflects the vibrant energy of city life.

Reed also takes inspiration from the beauty he sees all around him and strives to instill his work with extraordinary emotion and color. He aims to share his art with his community to foster a better understanding between people of all cultures.

ARTrageous II: Cedric Henry & Byron Reed opens in the Emmet gallery on January 18 and continues through March 15. To meet the artists, join us at the Museum for the opening reception on Friday, January 17 (see page 5 for event details).

The company was founded by J.R. Watkins in Plainview, Minnesota, who began selling liniment in 1868 door-to-door in the southeastern part of the state. The company moved to Winona in 1885 and added a number of products to its lineup.

By the 1940s, Watkins was the largest direct-sales company in the world, but soon began to decline and the company was sold to Irwin L. Jacobs in 1978. Today, the company has a workforce of 25,000 people to distribute its products and offers a limited number of products in national retail outlets.

In the Never Enough Time Gallery until May is a collection of Native American artifacts owned by Jackson resident Andy Walz. Andy has been growing his collection for over 20 years and is happy to share it with the Jackson community. He and his wife Julia hope to spark interest in Native American history and culture, as well as appreciation for the beauty and workmanship of the artifacts.

Andy’s Native American collection consists of antiques as well as modern reproductions. Among the artifacts exhibited are pipe bags and pipes, weaponry and clothing.
