JULYBOOSTER-2018
Dear Members,
Your Exalted Ruler, Alan Quinton, is working diligently on Lodge items and he will be sending out his ER letter to membership soon. However, with the 4th of July Independence Day and long weekend upon us, we are sending you the July booster so that you can plan your Lodge activities for the month.
Alan will be in San Antonio, Texas for the Elks National Convention July 1st – July 4th and celebrating 150 years of Elkdom!
Have a wonderful 4th of July celebration of all things we hold dear as American citizens.

Elkdom & Our Community May Madness Follow-Up The San Rafael Elks Lodge’s Past Exalted Ruler Association would like to thank all of the volunteers (too many to name!) and sponsors IT415, WHISKYTREE and Hauser Shade who helped make the May Madness concert a great success. This project could not have succeeded without your participation.
The proceeds from our event is already being put to good work supporting our community’s youth. Because of our collective work we were able to grant scholarships to two very deserving San Rafael high school graduating seniors, helping them in their way through college. We look forward to giving more scholarships in the near future. Thanks again ~ Your San Rafael Lodge PERs.

THE NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD
HISTORICAL SOCIETY A California Non-Profit Corporation
"Preserving the Heritage of the Redwood Empire Route"
ANNOUNCES AN EXCITING JULY PROGRAM
'Precursor to the NWP- The San Francisco & North Pacific Railroad from 1870-1906'
A Unique Membership Program hosted by Charlie Siebenthal
The mainline of the southern division of the NWPRR stretched from San Francisco to Willits via Tiburon. But it began life in 1870 as the San Francisco & North Pacific, a Sonoma County road running from San Francisco to Cloverdale via Donahue Wharf on Petaluma Creek. Incremental extensions west to Guerneville and Sebastopol were driven by produce and timber revenue. Incremental extensions north to Ukiah and eventually to Willits were driven by lumber revenue.
In competition with the North Pacific Coast's passenger ferry service to Sausalito and Point San Quentin, the SF&NP was forced to extend south to San Rafael in a failed attempted to gain access to the San Quentin ferry service. This forced the last extension south to Point Tiburon and the eventual abandonment of ferry service to Donahue.
Initially known as the "Donahue Road" and then the "Broad Gauge" the SF&NP went through four different ownerships before coming under the control of the Southern Pacific. It even became a holding company with the lease of the railroad to the California Northwestern. In 1906 the SF&NP disappeared as it became the major contribution of the Southern Pacific to the newly incorporated Northwestern Pacific Railroad.
NWPRRHS President Charlie Siebenthal will discuss the fascinating history of this line from 1870 to 1906 aided by photos and maps from the society's archives.
The public is welcome. Doors open at 7:30 pm with the program starting at 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. The program is free, although donations are welcome. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad Historical Society will also have an assortment of treasures (DVDs, caps, shirts, mugs and maps) available for sale.
NOTE: Due to a scheduling conflict, the NWPRRHS meeting will be held in the Elk's Lodge CARRIAGE HOUSE. The Carriage House is the building at the lower end of the parking lot, just up the hill from the main building.
The San Rafael Elks Lodge is located at 1312 Mission Avenue, San Rafael. The program runs approx. 2 hours overall with intermission. Plenty of FREE parking available up the hill behind the building.
THURSDAY, JULY 12TH, 2018, 8:00PM

D’s “ELK TRACKS” by D
June: Moab Lodge #2021 I was saddened to learn about on my recent trip to Moab, it was official, April 1st, 2018 BPOE Moab Lodge #2021 closed its doors. Moab’s Lodge was chartered in 1957 and served the Moab community and southeastern Utah families for 61 years. Had to at least drive up onto the mesa the lodge sits on and get one last photo. With no other Lodges to visit on this trip (so unusual) it was now all about the other “why I was there” a “Rock
Crawl”. We all arrived at base camp on Sunday the 21st and Monday morning it was rise and shine at 5, pack a lunch and hit the trail at 7 am. This was the agenda for the next 5 straight days of adventure. I was ready for the extreme, exhilarating” adrenaline rush” trails. Our group consisted of 12 jeeps and a total of 22 friends (three Elks). On day one we did Hell’s Gate. Other noteworthy trails were “Cliffhanger”, Rusty Nail with Golden Crack, exploring Canyonlands, the Petroglyphs and Anasazi Indian Ruins. Not a drive for your Prius! May: In Atascadero, we met up with Cheryl Ann from Santa Maria Elks and our friends Paul & Gail from South San Francisco Lodge #2091. We rented a great “Glamper Trailer” in a grove surrounded by trees & sheep before heading to visit Atascadero Lodge#2733. They were open!!!! Yep every day, except Sunday. Then it was off to Lunch at the “Fish Gaucho”. If you find yourself in Paso Robles, I highly suggest this great spot before moseying over to Paso Roble Lodge #2364. They had “Steak Night” shades of Santa Maria, which is a great BBQ and where we usually find great folks to give us places to go and see.
Saturday we visited some great wineries and met up with SSF Elks back at the Atascadero Lodge for Kentucky Derby. That night was Gail’s ceremony – she was being sworn in as Governor of Soroptimist of CA (So Cool!)
