Computer Safety & The 4B’s!
When thinking about computer safety both on and offline, remember the 4B’s!Be Safe
Be Responsible
Be Respectful
Be Caring Towards Others
Computer Hardware SafetyAvoid Physical Damage to Computers
Put on a firm desk, away from the edge.
Keep cords and cables away from foot traffic.
Never take apart the computer. You risk damage or electric shock.
Keep food, drinks and dust away from computer.
Insure computer for damage and theft.
Computer Hardware SafetyAvoid Computer Theft
Secure computer with a cable lock to a fixture or desk.
Inventory and engrave ID #’s onto computer.
If staying at a hotel, store electronics in a safe or secure it with reception desk.
Never leave unattended in public places.
Back up data on an external hard drive or online.
Avoid Damage from VirusesRemember: Email: Never Open -
DeleteScan virus protection
programs frequently.
Never download documents or programs from strange websites.
Unexpected attached files.
Email from strangers.
Forwarded mass emails.
SPAM in your email.
Guard Computer Information Protect data from accidental deleting, hard drive
crash, viruses or theft.
Securely store confidential data on a network file server, in the cloud, on an external hard drive, flash drive, CD or DVD.
Frequently back up important files.
Keep external back up drives, password data and personal ID documents in a bank safety deposit box.
Guard PasswordsPasswords should:
Never be given to friends or anyone online.
Be memorized.
Be stored in a secure place.
Be easy to remember, but secret from others.
Be different for each purpose.
Be numbered, lettered and case sensitive.
Be changed frequently.
Guard Private DataLimit access by setting screen savers to:
require entry log on and exit log off. auto log out when you are not working.
Don’t allow others use your passwords to work online.
Remember privacy is limited.School authorities can view online activity, emails,
passwords and files.
Follow Acceptable Use Policy, rules and guidelines.Misuse will prompt a review of data or loss of internet
use.
Guard Personal InformationNever give a social security number over the internet.
Caution who you give personal information: last name, birthday, home/email address or phone number.
Use secure websites (https://) when using a credit card online.
Frequently clean web browser of “cookies”.
Run spyware scans to clear hidden malware programs.
Be Private Online Never talk to strangers online:
Never reply to commercial solicitors or advertisements.
Never talk with strangers on emails, cell phone texts, chat rooms, social networks or blogs.
Never accept gifts, images or texts from strangers online.
Never tell strangers online where you live or are located.
Be Private Online Never give too much information online:
Never post images of yourself or others to any website, email or cell phone without parent permission.
Never post inappropriate images or messages about yourself or others online.
Never visit inappropriate websites.

How are messages sent?
Using digital communication to send malicious words or images to harm, intimidate, criticize, embarrass, abuse, discriminate or slander a person.
Via email messages, photo attachments, cell phone texts or images, blogs, facebook, shared Google docs, or YouTube videos.
Block Cyber BulliesDon’t respond online in any way. This engages
bullies.Save malicious messages or images as evidence. Tell a parent, teacher or school administrator.Block the sender(s) on all your electronic
